The application of signal detection theory to optics

The restoration of images focused on a photosensitive surface is treated from the standpoint of maximum likelihood estimation, taking into account the Poisson distributions of the observed data, which are the numbers of photoelectrons from various elements of the surface. A detector of an image focused on such a surface utilizes a certain linear combination of those numbers as the optimum detection statistic. Methods for calculating the false alarm and detection probabilities are proposed. It is shown that measuring noncommuting observables in an ideal quantum receiver cannot yield a lower Bayes cost than that attainable by a system measuring only commuting observables.

A continuing program for technology transfer to the apparel industry

A six month program has been carried out to investigate various mechanisms for transferring technology to industry. This program has focused on transfer to the apparel industry through the Apparel Research Foundation. The procedure was to analyze the problem, obtain potentially relevant aerospace technology, and then transfer this technology to the industry organization. This was done in a specific case. Technology was identified relevant to stitchless joining, and this technology was transferred to the Apparel Research Foundation. The feasibility and ground rules for carrying out such activities on a broader scale were established. A specific objective was to transfer new technology from the industry organization to the industry itself. This required the establishment of an application engineering program. Another transfer mechanism tested was publication of solutions to industry problems in a format familiar to the industry. This is to be distinguished from circulating descriptions of new technology. Focus is on the industry problem and the manager is given a formula for solving it that he can follow. It was concluded that this mechanism can complement the problem statement approach to technology transfer. It is useful in achieving transfer when a large amount of application engineering is not necessary. A wide audience is immediately exposed to the technology. On the other hand, the major manufacturing problems which require a sophisticated technical solution integrating many innovations are less likely to be helped.

Integral image tube-optical systems for the far UV.

Description of proposed image tube optical systems for narrow-band direct photography and broad bandpass photography from spacecraft outside the atmosphere. For narrow-band photography an f/1.5 Schmidt camera with a photocathode located on the focal surface is recommended. The photoelectrons are accelerated and magnetically focused onto a phosphor/fiber optics surface, the curvature of which partially corrects for distortions of the electric field introduced by the curved photocathode. The second stage can be any other tube, electrostatically or magnetically focused, having a fiber optics faceplate butted to the first stage. For broad bandpass a spectrograph with an f/3 all-reflecting Schmidt image tube camera is recommended.

Vlf/elf radiation patterns of arbitrarily oriented electric and magnetic dipoles in a cold lossless multicomponent magnetoplasma.

With the use of a power integral formulation, a study is made of the vlf/elf radiation patterns of arbitrarily oriented electric and magnetic dipoles in a cold lossless multicomponent magnetoplasma. Expressions for the ray patterns are initially developed that apply for arbitrary values of driving frequency, static magnetic-field strength, plasma density, and composition. These expressions are subsequently specialized to vlf/elf radiation in a plasma modeled on the magnetosphere. A series of representative pattern plots are presented for frequencies between the proton and electron gyrofrequencies. These patterns illustrate the fact that focusing effects that arise from the geometrical properties of the refractive index surface tend to dominate the radiation distribution over the entire range from the electron gyrofrequency to 4.6 times the proton gyrofrequency. It is concluded that focusing effects should be of significant importance in the design of a vlf/elf satellite transmitting system in the magnetosphere.

Circadian rhythms of visual accommodation responses and physiological correlations.

Use of a recently developed servocontrolled infrared optometer to continuously record the state of monocular focus while subjects viewed a visual target for which the stimulus to focus was systematically varied. Calculated parameters form recorded data - e.g., speeds of accommodation to approaching and receding targets, magnitude of accommodation to step changes in target distance, and amplitude and phase lag of response to sinusoidally varying stimuli were submitted to periodicity analyses. Ear canal temperature (ECT) and heart rate (HR) rhythms were also recorded for physiological correlation with accommodation rhythms. HR demonstrated a 24-hr rhythm, but ECT data did not.

On-film optical recording of camera lens settings

An apparatus is described for recording a representation of the camera lens aperture and focus setting on the film of a camera, while the photographic image is being recorded. A data lens is provided between the camera lens and film, by means of which the aperture and focus setting may be determined. The determination is made by measuring both the location and the size of a data image provided by the data lens. The data lens apparatus requires no electrical power, is low in weight, and does not result in an increase in the external dimensions of the camera.

Engineering analysis of ERTS data for southeast Asian agriculture

The present program focuses on rice because of its importance world-wide as a food. Specifically, the focus is on rice fields in the Philippines. Two primary program objectives are: (1) to establish the feasibility of extracting from ERTS imagery the areas where rice is grown, and (2) to determine those measurements on the imagery which enable the assessment of crop condition. Achieving these objectives with procedures which can be cost-effective can lead the way toward yield prediction, irrigation system management, and similar functions which are known to be important needs in Southeast Asia.

Optical data processing using paraboloidal mirror segments

An optical data processing system using paraboloidal reflecting surfaces is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment the paraboloidal reflecting surfaces are segments of a paraboloidal mirror. A source of coherent light is in the focal plane of the first paraboloidal mirror segment which collimates the beam and reflects it toward a second paraboloidal mirror surface. The information to be analyzed, on a transparency for example, is placed in the collimated beam. The beam is reflected from the second paraboloidal mirror segment and focused on a Fourier transform plane. A photon detector could be placed in the Fourier transform plane or suitable spatial filters, with the filtered beam then being reflected from a third paraboloidal mirror segment to be focused on a reconstruction plane.

Removal of a glowing spot from an image tube using laser radiation.

A troublesome problem with the Kron electronograph has been the presence of a white glowing spot on the glass wall of the tube adjacent to the focus electrode. The procedure followed to eliminate the spot was to operate in the dark and apply voltage only to the focused electrode. Ruby laser radiation was unfocused, and its position was shifted on the electrode between laser shots until an effect was observed. This technique for removing the glowing spot should be applicable to other electronic image tubes.

Electronographic cameras for space astronomy.

Magnetically-focused electronographic cameras have been under development at the Naval Research Laboratory for use in far-ultraviolet imagery and spectrography, primarily in astronomical and optical-geophysical observations from sounding rockets and space vehicles. Most of this work has been with cameras incorporating internal optics of the Schmidt or wide-field all-reflecting types. More recently, we have begun development of electronographic spectrographs incorporating an internal concave grating, operating at normal or grazing incidence. We also are developing electronographic image tubes of the conventional end-window-photo-cathode type, for far-ultraviolet imagery at the focus of a large space telescope, with image formats up to 120 mm in diameter.

Image enhancement by holography.

The speed of the holographic image deblurring method has recently been further enhanced by a new speed in the realization of the powerful holographic image-deblurring filter. The filter makes it possible to carry out the deblurring, in the optical computer used, in times of the order of one second. The experimental achievements using the holographic image-enhancement method are illustrated with examples ranging from out-of-focus or motion-blurred photographs, including 'amateur' photos recorded on Polaroid film, to the sharpening of the best available electron micrographs of viruses. Images recorded with X-rays, notably from rocket-borne photos of the sun, and out-of-focus photographs from cameras in NASA satellites have been similarly deblurred.
