SAR Speckle Noise Reduction Using Wiener Filter

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are degraded by speckle. A multiplicative speckle noise model for SAR images is presented. Using this model, a Wiener filter is derived by minimizing the mean-squared error using the known speckle statistics. Implementation of the Wiener filter is discussed and experimental results are presented. Finally, possible improvements to this method are explored.

A parallel VLSI architecture for a digital filter using a number theoretic transform

The advantages of a very large scalee integration (VLSI) architecture for implementing a digital filter using fermat number transforms (FNT) are the following: It requires no multiplication. Only additions and bit rotations are needed. It alleviates the usual dynamic range limitation for long sequence FNT's. It utilizes the FNT and inverse FNT circuits 100% of the time. The lengths of the input data and filter sequences can be arbitraty and different. It is regular, simple, and expandable, and as a consequence suitable for VLSI implementation.

A robust pseudo-inverse spectral filter applied to the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) scanning channels

Computer simulations of a least squares estimator operating on the ERBE scanning channels are discussed. The estimator is designed to minimize the errors produced by nonideal spectral response to spectrally varying and uncertain radiant input. The three ERBE scanning channels cover a shortwave band a longwave band and a ""total'' band from which the pseudo inverse spectral filter estimates the radiance components in the shortwave band and a longwave band. The radiance estimator draws on instantaneous field of view (IFOV) scene type information supplied by another algorithm of the ERBE software, and on a priori probabilistic models of the responses of the scanning channels to the IFOV scene types for given Sun scene spacecraft geometry. It is found that the pseudoinverse spectral filter is stable, tolerant of errors in scene identification and in channel response modeling, and, in the absence of such errors, yields minimum variance and essentially unbiased radiance estimates.

Pipelined digital SAR azimuth correlator using hybrid FFT-transversal filter

A synthetic aperture radar system (SAR) having a range correlator is provided with a hybrid azimuth correlator which utilizes a block-pipe-lined fast Fourier transform (FFT). The correlator has a predetermined FFT transform size with delay elements for delaying SAR range correlated data so as to embed in the Fourier transform operation a corner-turning function as the range correlated SAR data is converted from the time domain to a frequency domain. The azimuth correlator is comprised of a transversal filter to receive the SAR data in the frequency domain, a generator for range migration compensation and azimuth reference functions, and an azimuth reference multiplier for correlation of the SAR data. Following the transversal filter is a block-pipelined inverse FFT used to restore azimuth correlated data in the frequency domain to the time domain for imaging.

State estimation Kalman filter using optical processings Noise statistics known

Reference is made to a study by Casasent et al. (1983), which gave a description of a frequency-multiplexed acoustooptic processor and showed how it was capable of performing all the individual operations required in Kalman filtering. The data flow and organization of all required operations however, were not detailed in that study. Consideration is given here to a simpler Kalman filter state estimation problem. Equally spaced time-sampled intervals (k times T sub s, with k the iterative time index) are assumed. It is further assumed that the system noise vector w and the measurement noise vector v are uncorrelated and Gaussian distributed and that the noise statistics (Q and R) and the system model (Phi, Gamma, H) are known. The error covariance matrix P and the extrapolated error covariance matrix M can thus be precomputed and the Kalman gain matrix K sub k can be precomputed and stored for each input time sample.

Identification of the dynamics of a two-dimensional grid structure using least square lattice filters

The basic theory of least square lattice filters and their use in identification of structural dynamics systems is summarized. Thereafter, this theory is applied to a two-dimensional grid structure made of overlapping bars. Previously, this theory has been applied to an integral beam. System identification results are presented for both simulated and experimental tests and they are compared with those predicted using finite element modelling. The lattice filtering approach works well for simulated data based on finite element modelling. However, considerable discrepancy exists between estimates obtained from experimental data and the finite element analysis. It is believed that this discrepancy is the result of inadequacies in the finite element modelling to represent the damped motion of the laboratory apparatus.

Polarizing Filter for Integrated Optics

Polarizing filter for titanium-doped lithium niobate light waveguide suppresses transverse magnetic (TM) mode of light propagation while allowing transverse electric (TE) mode to continue on its way. Filter - lithium niobate crystal - is expected to find many applications in integrated optical circuits.

The Magneto-optical Filter, Working Principles and Recent Progress

The Magneto-Optical Filter is described which allows simultaneous magnetic and velocity measurements (in both imaging and non-imaging modes) without the need for a spectrograph. In this way the stability and alignment problems of the spectrograph are completely overcome. Its major advantages are: wavelength absolute reference and stability, high signal to noise ratio and independence of the transmission profile from the incidence angle of the solar beam. It is an imaging instrument allowing high wave number analysis in the solar oscillation spectrum and a continuous monitoring of the image position through the chromospheric facular structures. The apparatus in use at Mt. Wilson is assembled in a modular form. The most important part of it is a glass cell containing the sodium vapor. The filter is easy to use but the cell is not easy to construct in an optimal way. The technology is in progress both to use Na and K together and to prevent the windows from becoming coated during a long-term operation.

High-Latitude Filtering in a Global Grid-Point Model Using Model Normal Modes

The aim of high-latitude filtering in the vicinity of the poles is to avoid the excessively short time steps imposed on an explicit time-differencing scheme by linear stability due to fast moving inertia-gravity waves near the poles. The model normal mode expansion toward the problem of high-latitude filtering in a global shallow water model using the same philosophy as that used by Daley for the problem for large timesteps in P.E. models with explicit time integration schemes was applied.

Sigma Filter

The GLA Fourth-Order model is needed to smooth the topography. This is to remove the Gibbs phenomenon. The Gibbs phenomenon occurs whenever we truncate a Fourier Series. The Sigma factors were introduced to reduce the Gibbs phenomenon. It is found that the smooth Fourier series is nothing but the original Fourier series with its coefficients multiplied by corresponding sigma factors. This operator can be applied many times to obtain high order sigma filtered field and is easily applicable using FFT. It is found that this filter is beneficial in deriving the topography.

Adaptive identification and control of structural dynamics systems using recursive lattice filters

A new approach for adaptive identification and control of structural dynamic systems by using least squares lattice filters thar are widely used in the signal processing area is presented. Testing procedures for interfacing the lattice filter identification methods and modal control method for stable closed loop adaptive control are presented. The methods are illustrated for a free-free beam and for a complex flexible grid, with the basic control objective being vibration suppression. The approach is validated by using both simulations and experimental facilities available at the Langley Research Center.

A preliminary evaluation of a failure detection filter for detecting and identifying control element failures in a transport aircraft

The application of the failure detection filter to the detection and identification of aircraft control element failures was evaluated in a linear digital simulation of the longitudinal dynamics of a B-737 Aircraft. Simulation results show that with a simple correlator and threshold detector used to process the filter residuals, the failure detection performance is seriously degraded by the effects of turbulence.

Temperature profile retrieval by two-dimensional filtering

A two-dimensional spatial filter, optimum in the minimum-mean-square error sense, has been used to retrieve atmospheric temperature profiles from TIROS-N and NOAA-6 Microwave Sounding Unit measurements. This approach considers correlations both in the vertical and horizontal (along the orbital track) directions. It is found that lower retrieval errors result from the 2-D technique, compared with the 1-D technique, especially in the troposphere. The additional horizontal information used in the 2-D formulation substantially improves temperature retrievals over a severe cold front where vertical correlations are lessened. The improved results of the 2-D filter in the upper troposphere point to the presence of profile components in the null space of the weighting functions that are horizontally correlated with the observed data.

Integrated-Circuit Active Digital Filter

Pipeline architecture with parallel multipliers and adders speeds calculation of weighted sums. Picture-element values and partial sums flow through delay-adder modules. After each cycle or time unit of calculation, each value in filter moves one position right. Digital integrated-circuit chips with pipeline architecture rapidly move 35 X 35 two-dimensional convolutions. Need for such circuits in image enhancement, data filtering, correlation, pattern extraction, and synthetic-aperture-radar image processing: all require repeated calculations of weighted sums of values from images or two-dimensional arrays of data.

Adaptive control of large space structures using recursive lattice filters

The use of recursive lattice filters for identification and adaptive control of large space structures was studied. Lattice filters are used widely in the areas of speech and signal processing. Herein, they are used to identify the structural dynamics model of the flexible structures. This identified model is then used for adaptive control. Before the identified model and control laws are integrated, the identified model is passed through a series of validation procedures and only when the model passes these validation procedures control is engaged. This type of validation scheme prevents instability when the overall loop is closed. The results obtained from simulation were compared to those obtained from experiments. In this regard, the flexible beam and grid apparatus at the Aerospace Control Research Lab (ACRL) of NASA Langley Research Center were used as the principal candidates for carrying out the above tasks. Another important area of research, namely that of robust controller synthesis, was investigated using frequency domain multivariable controller synthesis methods.

Digital filtering and acceleration pulse interpretation

It was concluded that the post processing digital filter is quite effective for removing unwanted high frequency and noise without distorting the signal. In addition, digital filtering is effective for smoothing low-level low resolution digital data where the digital stairstep phenomena are pronounced. Integrating the acceleration data to obtain velocity traces is quite useful. The velocity change provides a check on the validity of the acceleration trace. (Zero offsets in acceleration must be removed before integrating.) Average accelerations can be obtained from the velocity trace by dividing the change in velocity for an acceleration pulse by the pulse duration. One can obtain the peak of an equivalent triangular pulse by doubling the average acceleration.
