Computer program for calculation of thermodynamic and transport properties of complex chemical systems

Program performs calculations such as chemical equilibrium for assigned thermodynamic states, theoretical rocket performance for both equilibrium and frozen compositions during expansion, incident and reflected shock properties, and Chapman-Jouget detonation properties. Features include simplicity of input and storage of all thermodynamic and transport property data on master tape.

FORTRAN 4 computer program for calculation of thermodynamic and transport properties of complex chemical systems

A FORTRAN IV computer program for the calculation of the thermodynamic and transport properties of complex mixtures is described. The program has the capability of performing calculations such as:(1) chemical equilibrium for assigned thermodynamic states, (2) theoretical rocket performance for both equilibrium and frozen compositions during expansion, (3) incident and reflected shock properties, and (4) Chapman-Jouguet detonation properties. Condensed species, as well as gaseous species, are considered in the thermodynamic calculation; but only the gaseous species are considered in the transport calculations.

Explosives for Lunar Seismic Profiling Experiment (LSPE)

Explosive charges of various sizes were investigated for use in lunar seismic studies. Program logistics, and the specifications for procurement of bulk explosives are described. The differential analysis, thermal properties, and detonation velocity measurements on HNS/Teflon 7C 90/10 are reported along with the field tests of the hardware. It is concluded that nearly all large explosive charges crack after fabrication, from aging or thermal shock. The cracks do not affect the safety, or reliability of the explosives.

The attenuation of X-rays emitted by supernovae

The attenuation of X-rays in Arnett's C-12 detonation supernova model is computed. The attenuation of X-rays in the filaments of the Crab Nebula is computed using a model for the filaments by Woltjer and a model by Davidson and Tucker. An empirical expression by Gorenstein, Kellogg, and Gursky for the optical thickness of the interstellar medium for three supernova remnants is analyzed.

The safety and reliability of the S and A mechanism designed for the NASA/LSPE program

Under contract to the Manned Spacecraft Center, NASA/Houston, NOL developed a number of explosive charges for use in studying the surface of the moon during Apollo 17 activities. The charges were part of the Lunar Seismic Profiling Experiment (LSPE). When the Safety and Arming Device used in the previous ALSEP experiments was found unsuitable for use with the new explosive packages, NOL also designed the Safety and Arming Mechanism, and the safety and reliability tests conducted are described. The results of the test program indicate that the detonation transfer probability between the armed explosive components exceeds 0.9999, and is less than 0.0001 when the explosive components are in the safe position.

Development of propulsion for high atmospheric pressure or dense environments

The development of a propulsion system that employs a detonating propellant is described, and the need for such a system and its use in certain planetary atmospheres are demonstrated. A theoretical formulation of the relevant gas-dynamic processes was developed, and a related series of experimental tests were pursued.

An intumescent coating for improved fuel fire protection of heat sensitive articles.

Intumescent coating compositions have been prepared using the ammonium salt of 4-nitroaniline-2-sulfonic acid and a copolymer of polysulfide-epoxy resin as the binder, into which have been dispersed various fillers. The fillers used in the study were low density microballoons for density control and fibers for controlled intumescence on contoured substrates. The filler effect on the thermal-physical efficiency of coatings has been measured. The coating utilizing short length silica fibers has been shown to have superior mechanical, environmental, and thermal properties. The coating applied to the exterior of loaded weapons has increased the time-to-detonation from three minutes for the unprotected weapon to 10-13 minutes.

Appraisal of UTIAS implosion-driven hypervelocity launchers and shock tubes.

A critical appraisal is made of the design, research, development, and operation of the novel UTIAS implosion-driven hypervelocity launchers and shock tubes. Explosively driven (PbN6-lead azide, PETN-pentaerythritetetranitrate) implosions in detonating stoichiometric hydrogen-oxygen mixtures have been successfully developed as drivers for hypervelocity launchers and shock tubes in a safe and reusable facility. Intense loadings at very high calculated pressures, densities, and temperatures, at the implosion center, cause severe problems with projectile integrity. Misalignment of the focal point can occur and add to the difficulty in using small caliber projectiles. In addition, the extreme driving conditions cause barrel expansion, erosion, and possible gas leakage from the base to the head of the projectile which cut the predicted muzzle velocities to half or a third of the lossless calculated values. However, in the case of a shock-tube operation these difficulties are minimized or eliminated and the possibilities of approaching Jovian reentry velocities are encouraging.

Experiments in gasdynamics of explosions.

Various topics concerning recent accomplishments in experimental studies of gasdynamics of explosions are reviewed. Detonations, shocks, and blast waves form these topics. The most important feature of current studies is the particular attention paid to transient processes and the concomitant progress made in the development of novel experimental means for the study of such processes. The most exciting prospects for the future are associated with possibilities of exploiting knowledge of explosion phenomena for the development of such interesting devices as the gasdynamic laser and the apparatus based on the use of lasers to achieve controlled thermonuclear reaction.

Apparatus simultaneously measures explosive pressure stimulus energy, explosive cutting, or rupturing, ability, and detonation propagation rate.

Binary helium dwarf supernovae

The possibility of helium dwarf evolution to sufficiently high densities for violent helium ignition in low-massed binary systems is investigated. During accretional evolution the occurrence of thermonuclear runaway is found to be probable when the dwarf's mass approaches 1 solar mass, and steady-state discontinuous wave propagation considerations indicate that the dwarf is totally incinerated (i.e., its total mass burns to nuclear equilibrium) by a detonation wave. A numerical stellar dynamic investigation, including the full effects of nuclear statistical equilibrium and electron capture indicates total disruption for all reasonable dwarf central densities. For consistency with the cosmic element abundances, the conclusion of total disruption requires a low frequency for helium supernova events, implying that helium ignition in mass-exchanging binaries must occur at the lower densities of the relatively mild helium flash.

L = 1.24 conjugate magnetic field line tracing experiments with barium shaped charges

Description of three experiments involving the injection of barium ions into magnetic flux tubes with the aid of high-explosive shaped charges with hollow conical liners of barium metal. In these experiments (called Alco, Bubia, and Loro, respectively) the explosive charges were detonated at altitudes above 500 km, producing jets of barium plasma with initial velocities ranging from 8 to 20 km/sec. The most interesting result of the experiments, which were carried out near L = 1.24 and were successful in tracing an entire field line some 7000 km to the conjugate ionosphere, was the observation that for Loro and probably Alco the direction and rate of drift of the two ends of the field line were identical, whereas those for Bubia differed significantly. In the case of the Bubia event significant differences in magnitude and direction at the conjugate points are noted, which lead to the conclusion that the field line could not have been equipotential during the interval of observation.

Electron capture in carbon dwarf supernovae

The rates of electron capture on heavier elements under the extreme conditions predicted for dwarf star supernovae have been computed, incorporating modifications that seem to be indicated by present experimental results. An estimate of the maximum possible value of such rates is also given. The distribution of nuclei in nuclear statistical equilibrium has been calculated for the range of expected supernovae conditions, including the effects of the temperature dependence of nuclear partition functions. These nuclide abundance distributions are then used to compute nuclear equilibrium thermodynamic properties. The effects of the electron capture on such equilibrium matter are discussed. In the context of the 'carbon detonation' supernova model, the dwarf central density required to ensure core collapse to a neutron star configuration is found to be slightly higher than that obtained by Bruenn (1972) with the electron capture rates of Hansen (1966).-

A technique for generating shear waves in cylindrical shells under radial impact

Experimental techniques are developed to study and measure the shear-wave velocity in an aluminum cylindrical shell subjected to a radial impact. The radial impact is obtained by exploding an electrical detonator inserted in plastic plugs mounted on the end of the shell. Strain gages, mounted on the outside surface of the shell at various axial locations, are used to obtain oscilloscope traces from which the shear-wave velocity can be calculated.

Simulation of hypersonic scramjet exhaust

A plan and some preliminary analysis for the accurate simulation of pressure distributions on the afterbody/nozzle portions of a hypersonic scramjet vehicle are described. The objectives fulfilled were to establish the standards of similitude for a hydrogen/air scramjet exhaust interacting with a vehicle afterbody, determine an experimental technique for validation of the procedures that will be used in conventional wind tunnel facilities, suggest a program of experiments for proof of the concept, and explore any unresolved problems in the proposed simulation procedures. It is shown that true enthalpy, Reynolds number, and nearly exact chemistry can be provided in the exhaust flow for the flight regime from Mach 4 to 10 by a detonation tube simulation. A detailed discussion of the required similarity parameters leads to the conclusion that substitute gases can be used as the simulated exhaust gas in a wind tunnel to achieve the correct interaction forces and moments.

The L = 6.6 Oosik barium plasma injection experiment and magnetic storm of March 7, 1972

A high-explosive shaped charge vaporizing a hollow conical liner of Ba metal and producing a fast field-aligned jet of plasma was detonated at high altitude, during a quiescent phase of a magnetic storm initiated by an ssc 10 hrs prior to the experiment, in an attempt to trace out and observe the dynamics of an auroral field line in the magnetosphere. Observations offer evidence for an upward Birkeland current sheet at the poleward edge of the auroral spiral of 8 x 10 to the minus second power A/m. Unusual features of the substorm leave open the possibility that the plasma injection may have triggered it.

Neutron stars - General review

A review is presented of those properties of neutron stars upon which there is general agreement and of those areas which currently remain in doubt. Developments in theoretical physics of neutron star interiors are summarized with particular attention devoted to hyperon interactions and the structure of interior layers. Determination of energy states and the composition of matter is described for successive layers, beginning with the surface and proceeding through the central region into the core. Problems encountered in determining the behavior of matter in the ultra-high density regime are discussed, and the effects of the magnetic field of a neutron star are evaluated along with the behavior of atomic structures in the field. The evolution of a neutron star is outlined with discussion centering on carbon detonation, cooling, vibrational damping, rotation, and pulsar glitches. The role of neutron stars in cosmic-ray propagation is considered.
