Remote sensing analysis of water quality and the entrapment zone in the San Francisco Bay and delta

The author has identified the following significant results. Data from an ocean color scanner flown on a U-2 aircraft at 65,000 ft and from LANDSAT MSS were enhanced to identify biologically active areas of San Francisco Bay, and to determine the salinity, turbidity, chlorophylls, and suspended solids. The best fit regression models for mapping water quality parameters were based on bands 3, 5, 7, and 10. Comparision of the results indicate that chlorophyll concentrations can best be estimated by the OCS or MSS data. Salinity can best be estimated by OCS data; turbidity can best be estimated by LANDSAT data. Neither OCS nor MSS data provide reliable basis for estimating suspended solids. Aerial photography of the highest quality taken with either conventional color or infrared-sensitive color films was unable to locate the biologically active areas.

An experimental investigation of a large delta P settling chamber for a supersonic pilot quiet tunnel

The mean streamwise flow distributions and turbulence levels across the chamber were measured with a hot wire anemometer downstream of a series of porous Rigimesh plates which were shown to be an effective means of reducing the chamber acoustic disturbance levels due to upstream pipe and valve systems. Tests made with various types of flow conditioners downstream of the porous plates showed that a series of screens was the most effective means of achieving the objective of a uniform mean flow distribution with reduced vorticity levels downstream of the porous components. Frequency spectra obtained across the series of screens show that they reduce vorticity over a wide frequency range for several different initial upstream vorticity conditions. Improvements in the mechanical installation of the porous plates and damping screens and the use of porous plates with more uniform porosity should reduce the freestream velocity fluctuations to the minimum acoustic levels of about 0.5 percent.

Effect of leading-edge vortex flaps on aerodynamic performance of delta wings

The effect of leading-edge vortex flaps on the aerodynamic characteristics of highly swept-back wings is analytically investigated, using the free vortex sheet method. The method, based on a three-dimensional inviscid flow model, is an advanced panel type employing quadratic doublet distributions to represent the wing surface, rolled-up vortex sheet and wake and is capable of computing forces, moments and surface pressures.

Determining spacecraft angular position with Delta VLBI - The Voyager demonstration

A demonstration of a new VLBI-based radio metric data type for interplanetary navigation has been conducted using the Voyager spacecraft on their approach to Saturn. Pseudo-range measurements from stations on intercontinental baselines were employed, in conjunction with interferometric observations of quasars, to obtain a precise measure of the spacecraft angular position. In addition to its high accuracy this technique requires significantly less station time than conventional range and Doppler and can be used in a downlink only mode. The paper describes the data type, acquisition system, and processing procedures. Anticipated measurement accuracy is established by analysis of various system error sources. Results obtained from Voyager observations are given to show that the system performance is in accordance with expectations.

A Cerenkov - Delta E/Delta X experiment for measuring cosmic-ray isotopes from neon through iron

Cosmic-ray isotope masses are measured in a balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment. Two Cerenkov counters and an NaI scintillator stack are used to determine changes in energy and in the Lorentz factor for a traversing or stopping particle. The mass is defined at the ratio of the change in energy to the change in the Lorentz factor. For incident elements from neon through iron, mass resolution better than 0.3 a.m.u. is expected, with incident Lorentz gammas ranging from 2.4 to 3.1, depending on the element. The mass resolution is approximately 0.2 a.m.u., measured for Mn-55 ions having an incident Lorentz factor of 2.75.
