AMPX and ENDF/B-VIII.1 Thermal Scattering Library [Slides]

This presentation provides an enlightening discussion of AMPX and ENDF/B-VIII.1. The talk begins with general ENDF issues encountered. Then narrows down into Issues particular to thermal scattering library. Such as the need for clear communication of the intended use for the file and the question of “Which graphite should I use in model?”. The presentation then looks at TSL files with many Bragg peaks are driving a change in SCALE CE library format and transport codes. This lecture concludes with a look at usage of thermal kernels with sharp peaks with the issues encountered using ENDF/B-VIII.0 data and resolved.

Fission Product Yields: SCALE/ORNL Perspective [Slides]

This presentation covers a few key points. First and foremost, that ORIGEN is a consumer of FPY data. Secondly, TRITON and POLARIS are assets which can be used to validate new FPY data, e.g., from existing radiochemical benchmarks and new irradiation experiments. Lastly, this presentation finds that new capabilities with covariance data should be developed, and V and V methods and analysis are also needed for the covariance data.

Format Proposal for Isotopic Distribution in TSL Files for ENDF/B-VIII.1 [Slides]

This presentation proposes a format of an ‘footer’ file for ENDF6-format TSL files. This would contain several pieces of pertinent information for the scattering atom. such as the Number of scattering atoms in molecule, Isotopic distribution within scattering atom, and free atom and atomic weight ratios for each isotope. This setup will not require significant changes to processing codes or to other sections of the MF7 file.

Nuclear Data Evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region and Proposed Updates to Rmatrix Modeling in the SAMMY Code [Slides]

This detailed presentation starts off with an evaluation workflow scheme along with observables definition. Provided next are typical cases of explicit experimental effects and the basic quantities for reproducibility. Lastly the presentation mentions the Inverse channel, Complex radius, and the level dependent boundary condition. A visual workflow scheme is provided.

Recent MCNP® Code Developments and Improvements for Nuclear Energy Applications [Slides]

The MCNP® code is a general-purpose radiation transport code developed at LANL over the past 46+ years. This code is capable of modeling the fundamental physics of particles as they move through and interact with materials. It is used in many LANL and worldwide radiation transport applications (see next slide) for example in the Fundamental nuclear physics and data experiments at LANSCE.

Bramblett and Czirr Self-Shielded Fission Rates for 235 U Physical and Analytic Benchmark

These experiments were performed by Bramblett and Czirr at UCRL (i.e., LLNL) in the late 1960s through the 1970s and evaluated by Mark Lee (LFO, retired) for the ICSBEP Handbook. Dimensions, geometry, and benchmark RSFR values are taken from the Handbook. All sample calculational results used COG 11.3 with ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross-sections. A sample input listing is provided in Appendix A.

Resonance Parameter Evaluation of n + 88 Sr reactions for ENDF/B-VIII.1 Library

An evaluation of n+ 88 Sr reactions up to 950 keV was compiled from a publicly available set of resonance parameters. Starting from the repository of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library, an evaluated nuclear data file was assembled and submitted for inclusion to the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF)/B-VIII.1 release. This evaluation features an external function representation defined by pole strengths and R ∞ parameters over the entire resolved resonance range. This work improves the modeling of the R-matrix parameterization from multi-Level Breit-Wigner resonance parameters to Reich-Moore formalism, and it also extends thrice the upper energy range of the current ENDF/B-VIII.0 resolved resonance evaluation.

Verification and Validation of the New MCNP6.3 Criticality Features [Slides]

This presentation touches on a separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. Here, we look at new optional features of the MCNP6.3 code with Fission-matrix-based options, Convergence and population testing, and Automated acceleration of the fission source additionally Doppler Broadening Resonance Correction. Also touched on are validation benchmarks: criticality, crit_expanded, and Rossi-α. All the new MCNP6.3 options give statistically equivalent results and either provide a reduction or no change in computational cost. We consider giving these new features a try and using them for all criticality calculations.

Verification and Performance Impact of the New Parallel MCNP6.3 Particle Track Output Capability for Subcritical Multiplication Simulations [Slides]

A separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. This report does not include the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite. After some additional clean-up and finalizing the post-processing and documentation steps, the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite will be released in the next version of our vnvstats repository. We tested the new HDF5 PTRAC feature in MCNP6.3 and found encouraging outcomes. Identical results coming out of the simulation with respect to the legacy PTRAC results. The overall runtime for all simulations is reduced by ~20% with the new HDF5 PTRAC capability. We consider giving the new HDF5 PTRAC features a try and using it for all subcritical multiplication and any other relevant (PTRAC) calculations.
