Report on the ALPO LTP observing program

Observations of lunar transient phenomena for the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) are reported. The procedures for making visual observations for estimating albedo are described, and the reported albedo analyzed for lunar topographic features. It is shown that a catalog or scale of albedos can be established for each feature.

Study terrestrial applications of solar cell powered systems

Terrestrial applications of solar cells and design systems are considered for those applications that show the most promise for becoming practical and accepted by users within the next five years. The study includes the definition, categorization, evaluation and screening of the most attractive potential terrestrial applications for solar cells. Potential markets are initially grouped and categorized in a general sense and are weighted in priority by their business volume, present and future. From a categorized list including marine, transportation, security, communication, meteorological and others, 66 potential solar cell applications have been cataloged. A methodology was formulated to include the criteria for evaluation and screening. The evaluation process covers all parts and components of the complete system required for each application and gives consideration to all factors, such as engineering, economic, production, marketing and other factors that may have an influence on the acceptance of the system.

Supply support of NASA tracking networks

The extent which supply support for Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Deep Space Network and Goddard Space Flight Center's Space Flight Tracking and Data Network should be consolidated is considered along with the Identification of opportunities for improvements in each of the supply systems without regard to consolidation. There is a considerable amount of commonality between the items in the stock catalogs at the two network depots, 58% for federal stock number items and 30% overall. The workload at the DSIF Supply Depot (DSD) is small (less than 20%) compared to the Network Logistics Depot (NLD). A number of important benefits in supply support would result from a consolidation of DSD into NLD. LMI found that a consolidation as is, without any changes in inventory management techniques, would reduce annual operating costs by from $208,000 to $358,000. However, if the consolidation were coupled with a change to use of economic order quantities, the annual operating cost reduction would range from $930,000 to $1,078,000.

Accuracy analysis of the ephemerides of the Galilean satellites

Known discrepancies between Sampson's Theory and observations of the Galilean satellites produce in plane errors of about 1200 km. Since the mean longitude is responsible for most of the discrepancy a simple time correction may be used to significantly reduce these errors. An analysis of the time corrections derived for Sampson's Theory, concludes that the dominant error in the mean longitudes results from Sampson's definition of time, which was determined by the observations which he used in constructing the theory. Imposition of the libration constraint results in changes to the time corrections which are less than the standard deviation of those quantities. The individual eclipse observational errors are shown to be proportional to the square root of the period. With improved star catalogs, the attainable accuracy of the ephemerides of the Galilean satellites is about 100 km from photographic plates versus about 200 km for eclipse observations.-

Discrepant redshifts of QSOs in clusters of galaxies and a close QSO pair

The question is investigated whether QSO redshifts are cosmological in origin, taking into account the possibility that QSOs may be more local objects. A search is made for situations in which more than one blue stellar object (BSO) lay close to a radio position selected from the 4C catalog. It is found that in all four examples studied the radio emission arises in the QSO and not the galaxies or cluster of galaxies.

The abundance and age distributions of 500 F stars in the solar neighbourhood

The uvby catalog of Perry has been used, in conjunction with theoretical uvby colors and stellar evolutionary tracks, to obtain the metal abundance distribution and age distribution of F and G type dwarf stars within 100 pc of the sun. Eighty-three per cent of stars with spectral type F5-G2 have metal content within a factor of 2.5 of the solar abundance, and only 2% have less than one-quarter the solar abundance. The metal abundance distribution, which contains more metal-rich stars than found in previous investigations of F and G dwarfs, has also been compared with the observed metal abundance distribution of G and K giants and the model galaxy calculations of Truran and Cameron (1971). A comparison of the age distribution with evolutionary calculations implies that the rate of star formation in the galaxy may not have decreased by a large factor in the last 10 billion years.

Influence of precision inertial systems on astronomical observations

The incorporation of precision inertial control on LST could exert a strong influence on the philosophy of and techniques for carrying out astronomical observations. In conjunction with a fine guidance star sensor, the inertial reference unit (IRU) described herein could easily expand LST capability to include observations such as (1) tracking of solar system objects, including specific points of interest on the planets; (2) rapid repositioning of scanning sensors on distributed objects such as nebulae and galaxies; (3) carrying out unified star catalog measurements to eliminate the overlap problem which exists in all ground procedures; and (4) carrying out various astrometric measurements with 'real time' data reduction capability.

On the determination of certain astronomical, selenodesic, and gravitational parameters of the moon

A method was examined for joint construction of a selenocentric fundamental system which can be realized by a coordinate catalog of reference contour points uniformly positioned over the entire lunar surface, and determination of the parameters characterizing the gravitational field, rotation, and orbital motion of the moon. Characteristic of the problem formulation is the introduction of a new complex of inconometric measurements which can be made using pictures obtained from an artificial lunar satellite. The proposed method can be used to solve similar problems on any other planet for which surface images can be obtained from a spacecraft. Characteristic of the proposed technique for solving the problem is the joint statistical analysis of all forms of measurements: orbital iconometric, earth-based trajectory, and also a priori information on the parameters in question which is known from earth-based astronomical studies.

Skylab Medical Data Center and Archives

The founding of the Skylab medical data center and archives as a central area to house medical data from space flights is described. Skylab program strip charts, various daily reports and summaries, experiment reports and logs, status report on Skylab data quality, raw data digital tapes, processed data microfilm, and other Skylab documents are housed in the data center. In addition, this memorandum describes how the data center acted as a central point for the coordination of preflight and postflight baseline data and how it served as coordinator for all data processing through computation and analysis. Also described is a catalog identifying Skylab medical experiments and all related data currently archived in the data center.

Spectrophotometry of prominences in the phase preceding decay

The results are presented of spectrophotometric processing of prominence spectra in both the quiet and the decay phases. A catalog was compiled of equivalent widths, central intensities, Doppler half-widths, and half-widths of emission lines. The reduced Doppler half-widths of D3 and of the H, K Ca(+) lines obtained in a prominence active phase are much larger than those obtained during a quiet phase. Comparison of the equivalent widths and central intensities of H sub alpha, H sub beta hydrogen and D3 helium lines shows that the values increase in the active phase for the D3 lines and decrease for the H sub alpha, H sub beta lines.

Propulsion technology needs for advanced space transportation systems

Plans are formulated for chemical propulsion technology programs to meet the needs of advanced space transportation systems from 1980 to the year 2000. The many possible vehicle applications are reviewed and cataloged to isolate the common threads of primary propulsion technology that satisfies near term requirements in the first decade and at the same time establish the technology groundwork for various potential far term applications in the second decade. Thrust classes of primary propulsion engines that are apparent include: (1) 5,000 to 30,000 pounds thrust for upper stages and space maneuvering; and (2) large booster engines of over 250,000 pounds thrust. Major classes of propulsion systems and the important subdivisions of each class are identified. The relative importance of each class is discussed in terms of the number of potential applications, the likelihood of that application materializing, and the criticality of the technology needed. Specific technology programs are described and scheduled to fulfill the anticipated primary propulsion technology requirements.
