Measuring cryogenic-refrigerator cooling capacity

Temperature-sensing bridge determines liquid reserve level in low-temperature heat exchanger. Device should be of interest to manufacturers of cryogenic refrigerators as well as to those who use them in conjunction with operation of electronic equipment like masers or Josephson junctions.

Field mapping for heat capacity mapping determinations: Ground support for airborne thermal surveys

Thermal models independently derived by Watson, Outcalt, and Rosema were compared using similar input data and found to yield very different results. Each model has a varying degree of sensitivity to any specified parameter. Data collected at Pisgah Crater-Lavic Lake was re-examined to indicate serious discrepancy in results for thermal inertia from Jet Lab Propulsion Laboratory calculations, when made using the same orginal data sets.

Effects of growth, diving history, and high altitude on blood oxygen capacity in harbor seals

Blood volume and body composition for diving and nondiving harbor seals were measured at six-week intervals during a 10-month period of captitivity. Whole body hematocrit, red cell volume per kg of lean body mass, and total circulating hemoglobin per kg lean body mass were significantly higher in the diving group, but relatively large blood volumes expressed in terms of body weight (11-12%) were found in both groups. A pair of harbor seals exposed to high altitude for about three months registered significant increases in red cell volume, blood hemoglobin levels, and blood volume expressed in terms of body weight; results of alveolar gas analyses indicate that hyperventilation also occurred. These typical mammalian responses to hypoxia suggest that the harbor seal's large blood volume and high hemoglobin content are an expression of phylogenetic control, and that in spite of its adaptability to apnea during its diving life, the animal cannot be considered preacclimatized to high altitude.

Silicon solar cells with a total power capacity of 30 kilowatts

The bulk of the contract effort was carried out in the following two phases: Phase 1 -- module design, Pre-production module fabrication, inspection and test. Phase 2 -- Production, test and delivery. Effort during the first two months of the contract concentrated on design of a solar module to meet specification. Basic module design resulting from this effort is as follows: (1) frame design; (2) cell pan design; (3) cell interconnection; (4) encapsulation; (5) electrical performance.

HCMM Heat Capacity Mapping Mission

The author has identified the following significant results. Thermal imagery shows a large temperature variation over the 640 acre experimental site. The variation is due to the slope and aspect of the terrain as well as the aircraft flight direction (east-west versus north-south). In spite of these individual temperature differences, mean temperature values from 40 to 640 acre blocks are essentially identical regardless of aircraft flight direction.

Low cost solar array project silicon materials task. Development of a process for high capacity arc heater production of silicon for solar arrays

Silicon tetrachloride and a reductant (sodium) will be injected into an arc heated mixture of hydrogen and argon, yielding silicon and gaseous sodium chloride. Detailed characterization of the Sonicore sodium injection nozzle, using water as the test fluid was completed. Results indicated that flow rates of 45 gph sodium and 50 scfm argon should produce sufficiently small droplet sizes. The design effort was also completed for the test system preparation which was divided into two categories: (1) system components and (2) test system-laboratory integration.

Initial evaluation tests of Eagle-Picher Industries 9.0 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells for the heat capacity mapping mission satellite and the stratospheric aerosol and gas experiment satellite

The results of tests to insure that all cells put into the life cycle program are of high quality are reported. The tests consisted of the following: phenolptalein leak tests, internal short test, charge efficiency test, and overcharge tests. The results of tests for 10 cells are tabulated.

Development of a Process for a High Capacity Arc Heater Production of Silicon for Solar Arrays

A program was established to develop a high temperature silicon production process using existing electric arc heater technology. Silicon tetrachloride and a reductant (sodium) are injected into an arc heated mixture of hydrogen and argon. Under these high temperature conditions, a very rapid reaction is expected to occur and proceed essentially to completion, yielding silicon and gaseous sodium chloride. Techniques for high temperature separation and collection were developed. Included in this report are: test system preparation; testing; injection techniques; kinetics; reaction demonstration; conclusions; and the project status.
