A Modern Ethernet Data Acquisition Architecture for Fermilab Beam Instrumentation

The Fermilab Accelerator Division, Instrumentation Department is adopting an open-source framework to replace our embedded VME-based data acquisition systems. Utilizing an iterative methodology, we first moved to embedded Linux, removing the need for VxWorks. Next, we adopted Ethernet on each data acquisition module eliminating the need for the VME backplane in addition to communicating with a rack mount server. Development of DDCP (Distributed Data Communications Protocol), allowed for an abstraction between the firmware and software layers. Each data acquisition module was adapted to read out using 1 GbE and aggregated at a switch which up linked to a 10 GbE network. Current development includes scaling the system to aggregate more modules, to increase bandwidth to support multiple systems and to adopt MicroTCA as a crate technology. The architecture was utilized on various beamlines around the Fermilab complex including PIP2IT, FAST/IOTA and the Muon Delivery Ring. In summary, we were able to develop a data acquisition framework which incrementally replaces VxWorks & VME hardware as well as increases our total bandwidth to 10 Gbit/s using off the shelf Ethernet technology.

A Commercial Building Plug Load Management System that Uses Internet of Things Technology to Automatically Identify Plugged-In Devices and Their Locations

Plug and process loads (PPLs) account for a large portion of U.S. commercial building energy use. There is a huge potential to reduce whole building consumption by targeting PPLs for energy savings measures or implementing some form of plug load management (PLM). Despite this potential, there has yet to be a widely adopted commercial PLM technology. This paper describes the Automatic Type and Location Identification System (ATLIS), a PLM system framework with automatic and dynamic load detection (ADLD). ADLD gives PLM systems the ability to automatically identify devices as they are plugged into the outlets of a building. The ATLIS framework takes advantage of smart, connected devices to identify device locations in a building, meter and control their power, and communicate this information to a central database. ATLIS includes five primary capabilities: location identification, communication, control, energy metering, and data storage. A laboratory proof of concept (PoC) demonstrated all but the energy metering capability, and these capabilities were validated using a series of system tests. The PoC was able to identify when a device was plugged into an outlet and the location of the device in the building. When a device was moved, the PoC's dashboard and database were automatically updated with the new location. The PoC implemented controls to devices from the system dashboard so that devices maintained correct schedules regardless of where they were plugged in within the building. ATLIS's primary technology application is improved PLM, but other applications include asset management, energy audits, and interoperability for grid-interactive efficient buildings. An ATLIS-based system could also be used to direct power to critical devices, such as ventilators, during a brownout or blackout. Such a framework is an opportunity to make PLM more widespread and reduce the amount of energy consumed by PPLs in current and future commercial buildings.

Detection of shared memory faults in a computing job

Technology for determining whether an inter-process type message has been successfully sent from a first process to a second process running on a single computer with a single processor(s) set. A variable (for example, a bit value) is used to indicate whether the inter-process message has been communicated between the processes. A timer and a predetermined timeout threshold are used to determine if the inter-process message has been pending for too long without being successfully communicated.

Memory access response merging in a memory hierarchy

A system and method for efficiently processing memory requests are described. A computing system includes multiple compute units, multiple caches of a memory hierarchy and a communication fabric. A compute unit generates a memory access request that misses in a higher level cache, which sends a miss request to a lower level shared cache. During servicing of the miss request, the lower level cache merges identification information of multiple memory access requests targeting a same cache line from multiple compute units into a merged memory access response. The lower level shared cache continues to insert information into the merged memory access response until the lower level shared cache is ready to issue the merged memory access response. An intermediate router in the communication fabric broadcasts the merged memory access response into multiple memory access responses to send to corresponding compute units.

A Hardware Platform for Studying Naval Power Electronic Power Distribution Systems

Abstract – Future intelligent ship system designs will likely include electric propulsion, numerous highpower sensors, and directed energy weapons. Supply and control of these large nonlinear loads will require a networked, multi-converter power electronic power distribution system. This work presents a hardware platform to emulate a microgrid power system with multiple power converters and a power data communication network. The platform is reconfigurable and can include both AC and DC power distribution zones, representative of shipboard power systems. It also allows for the study of both power control actuation and power data communication delays. Since the platform is based on electric power hardware, spatial and temporal uncertainties are inherently embedded in the system. Specifically, this work examines the control actuation of multiple pulsed power loads in a single microgrid. Several pulse load levels and operating scenarios have been implemented and measured. A framework for control parameter quantification is presented, and various metrics are explored to capture pulse signal characteristics. The sensitivity of pulse load metric parameters is analyzed. Dynamic shipboard, mission-specific load profiles coupled with pulse loads can also be emulated in the hardware platform.

Virtual Engineering Software Framework for Integrated Biomass Conversion Modeling

This presentation covers the design and implementation of a software tool to systematically connect computational models of unit operations to simulate an integrated process of low-temperature conversion of biomass to fuel. This virtual engineering (VE) software was designed with the overarching goal of connecting unit models written in various programming languages and requiring different computational resources within a single, flexible framework. The models and features currently considered for the VE library include mechanistic models for pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and aerobic bioreaction; high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for enzymatic hydrolysis and aerobic bioreaction; and the capability to perform techno-economic analyses (TEA) using Aspen Plus, a commercial software package. The CFD models require access to high-performance computing (HPC) resources, so in addition to handling multiple programming languages and interfaces, the VE software must also be capable of interacting with an HPC scheduler to submit, run, and post-process jobs. Using the Python programming language, a new VE software package has been developed that contains functionality to manage the input-output communication between various unit models, schedule simulations to run on NREL's HPC and analyze those results, and interface with existing TEA software workflows. A Jupyter-notebook GUI was also created to solicit user input and provide documentation. In cases where multiple models for a particular unit-operation exist, selection between models is accomplished through a simple checkbox, with the appropriate inputs and outputs being parsed and converted seamlessly in the background. Each operation makes use of a different programming language, but the flow of information from pretreatment to enzymatic hydrolysis to bioreaction is managed with an intuitive, centralized file-communication strategy. In this talk, the programming approach and implementation details of the notebook are presented for multiple possibilities of the conversion process, including a demonstration of the ability to manage HPC resources. Additionally, an example of a sensitivity study of treatment parameters governing the overall conversion outcome is shown which highlights the ease of defining new problems using the VE Notebook workflow and leads into a discussion of ongoing work to enable outer-loop optimization studies.

Inadvertent actuation block valve for a small modular nuclear reactor

An inadvertent actuation block valve includes inlet and outlet orifices being in selective fluid communication via a chamber. A disc is disposed within the chamber and a bellows is configured to contract at a predetermined pressure differential between reactor fluid entering a reference pressure orifice and control fluid entering the inlet orifice. When the bellows contracts, the disc engages the outlet orifice and isolates fluid communication between the inlet and outlet orifices. The inadvertent actuation block valve prevents inadvertent opening of an emergency core cooling valve when a reactor is at operating pressure that is above the predetermined set pressure range. The inadvertent actuation block valve permits the emergency cooling valves to open and to remain open when reactor pressure is below the predetermined set pressure range. The inadvertent actuation block valve does not impede long term emergency cooling that occurs when the reactor is at low pressure.
