Laser-driven production with advanced targets of Copper-64 for medical applications

Radionuclides are of paramount importance in nuclear medicine both for clinical uses and radiopharmaceutical production. Among the others, nuclides suitable for theranostics like Copper-64 are particularly attractive since they can play both a diagnostic and therapeutic role. In the last years, the growing demand for these nuclides stimulated the research of new solutions, along with cyclotrons already in use, for their production. In this respect, a promising alternative is laser-driven proton accelerators based on the interaction of superintense laser pulses with target materials. Because of their potential compactness and flexibility, they are under investigation for several applications ranging from materials science to nuclear medicine. Moreover, the use of advanced Double-Layer targets (DLTs) was identified as a viable route to increase the number and energy of the accelerated protons to satisfy the requirements of demanding applications. In this contribution, we numerically investigate the use of DLT-based laser-driven sources for Copper-64 production. We show that activities relevant to pre-clinical studies can be achieved with an existing 150 TW laser and DLTs. Moreover, we extend the discussion by considering a broad range of laser systems by exploiting a theoretical model. Our results can guide the choice of laser and target parameters for future experimental investigations.

Investigation of land use of northern megalopolis using ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. It was concluded that ERTS land use mapping, in spite of portraying megalopolis more accurately and dramatically than the best past efforts, is in danger of falling into the category of being too revolutionary for many planners and too conventional for many electronics engineers. Two alternative solutions are implied: one is to improve the ERTS product to the level where it will be completely accepted by planners, and the other is to increase support for the present somewhat primitive product through education, cost-sharing, and legislation.

Active Learning for Directed Exploration of Complex Systems

Physics-based simulation codes are widely used in science and engineering to model complex systems that would be infeasible to study otherwise. Such codes provide the highest-fidelity representation of system behavior, but are often so slow to run that insight into the system is limited. For example, conducting an exhaustive sweep over a d-dimensional input parameter space with k-steps along each dimension requires k(sup d) simulation trials (translating into k(sup d) CPU-days for one of our current simulations). An alternative is directed exploration in which the next simulation trials are cleverly chosen at each step. Given the results of previous trials, supervised learning techniques (SVM, KDE, GP) are applied to build up simplified predictive models of system behavior. These models are then used within an active learning framework to identify the most valuable trials to run next. Several active learning strategies are examined including a recently-proposed information-theoretic approach. Performance is evaluated on a set of thirteen synthetic oracles, which serve as surrogates for the more expensive simulations and enable the experiments to be replicated by other researchers.

Memo on Speech Alarms: Replication and Validation of Results

Caution and warning (C&W) alarms help people to quickly and efficiently identify situations that are of immediate danger or would escalate to a safety critical level. Tones are highly salient and have been traditionally used for caution and warning alarms. However, research shows that tone alarms can have an unwanted startle effect that hinders operator decision making. Speech alarms are good alternatives to tone alarms because they require less training and are less startling. They have been in use for decades for caution and warning systems in commercial airplanes and in buildings. Speech alarms have been considered for space flight use by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Astronaut Office and by its Orion Program. To investigate whether performance with various types of speech alarms was similar to performance with the currently used tone alarms, a study was conducted in 2010. The results showed faster identification times of speech alarms as well as higher acceptance rates from participants. However, the presentation of the alarms had a variable onset time due to software. The current research project was funded to address this issue by collecting new data with alarms having nonvariable onset time and to validate the alarms in the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA). This report describes the two studies: a laboratory experiment comparing tone and speech alarms, and an evaluation in the HERA facility.

Identifying recharge sources and their impacts on a North Central New Mexico shallow aquifer using unsupervised machine learning

In this article, shallow aquifers are important but highly variable resources in arid to semi-arid regions. Limited shallow aquifer volume results in high sensitivity to recharge fluctuations, which can impact the local fauna and flora, and transport of contaminants in the aquifer or vadose zone. Aquifer response to external forcing (e.g., precipitation) is usually solved by estimating aquifer parameters and running physics-based models to match known fluctuations of hydraulic head. However, this technique is time and computationally expensive. Furthermore, high aquifer complexity decreases precision in physics-based models. Alternatively supervised machine learning is used to predict aquifer dynamics. However, these techniques rely on input data and struggle to interpret aquifer response for missing sources (i.e., snowpack data). To counter these problems, we propose an unsupervised machine learning technique (NMFk) to estimate the impact of different sources on aquifer recharge. NMFk is used to understand the influence of external forcing on shallow aquifer recharge in the Pajarito Plateau (Los Alamos, NM, USA). The results show how NMFk can be used to reduce the data dimension in a complex field dataset to three recharge signals that cause fluctuations within the field data. Here, the source signals are interpreted as rainfall, snowmelt, and a delayed aquifer response to the previous two signals. These results evidence how heterogeneous aquifers delimited by canyons incised into the Pajarito Plateau respond in similar ways to the source signals identified by NMFk. Furthermore, results show the importance of the local geology where faults act as sinks, and anthropogenic disturbances can facilitate infiltration amplifying the interpreted signal.

A new perspective on density and strength loss profiles at the surface of thermally oxidized nuclear graphite

Oxidation of graphite components could influence their designed life in a high-temperature nuclear reactor. The oxidized regions could potentially lower the allowed stress capacity. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers rules for the design and construction of graphite-moderated reactors recommend that subsurface regions that might become excessively damaged by oxidation during reactor operation be identified and excluded from geometry and stress calculations. Identification of oxidation-affected regions is possible, in principle, through complex modeling exercises of reactor behavior during hypothetical accident scenarios coupled with graphite oxidation models, but this procedure may not have the precision needed for informed decisions. Here, this paper proposes an alternate method, based on interpretation of a series of well-designed oxidation experiments, which could augment the designer's tools. The procedure is illustrated by data on oxidation by air of several graphite grades (NBG-18, PCEA, IG-110, R4-650) that are corroborated with independent literature information, when available. The Wichner model for graphite oxidation used for this analysis provides conservative results that could be quickly implemented in the design process.

Risk assessment and ventilation modeling for hydrogen releases in vehicle repair garages

The availability of repair garage infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is becoming increasingly important for future industry growth. Ventilation requirements for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can affect both retrofitted and purpose-built repair garages and the costs associated with these requirements can be significant. A hazard and operability (HAZOP) study was performed to identify risk-significant scenarios related to light-duty hydrogen vehicles in a repair garage. Detailed simulations and modeling were performed using appropriate computational tools to estimate the location, behavior, and severity of hydrogen release based on key HAZOP scenarios. Here, this work compares current fire code requirements to an alternate ventilation strategy to further reduce potential hazardous conditions. Modeling shows that position, direction, and velocity of ventilation have a significant impact on the amount of instantaneous flammable mass in the domain.

Fluorescent aggregate structure revealed in bisphenol F epoxy thermoset

Bisphenol F (BPF) epoxy resin is a prepolymer component of thermosets used in construction of reinforced carbon fiber composites (RCFC). The fluorescence of this resin can provide information about chemical and structural alterations of the thermoset from thermal or mechanical damage. While some work has investigated the fluorescence spectra of bisphenol A epoxy resin, a structural analog of BPF, none have studied BPF. The purpose of this study is to investigate the baseline fluorescence spectra of the BPF epoxy resin for features that could be utilized for monitoring damage and structural alterations. Bisphenol F epoxy resin was found to have two emission peaks with a broad peak centered at 410 nm and a sharp peak centered at 550 nm. The broad emission peak was identified as the fluorescence from BPF epoxy monomer while the sharp emission peak was found to be from an aggregate structure present in the epoxy resin. It is hypothesized that this structure is an H-aggregate based on the emission features and structural stability of the aggregate compared to the alternative J-aggregate which was determined via density functional theory calculations. The H-aggregate was found to persist into one of the cured thermoset formulations evaluated but was lost when exposed to elevated temperatures below thermal degradation of the thermoset. This loss of aggregate structure was due to polymer network rearrangement. This new fluorescence signature can be used as an indicator of polymer network rearrangement from thermal exposure which may alter the expected material performance and precede thermal degradation.

Pressure-dependent kinetics of cyclopentene consumption

Recent experiments have uncovered deficiencies in the ability of current kinetic models for cyclopentane combustion to predict species profiles as a function of O2 concentration. One likely source of these discrepancies flows from the limited availability of relevant kinetic data for key functionalized intermediates, requiring the use of distant analogies to estimate their rates. This work fills this gap for cyclopentene, the most prominent C5 intermediate in low-temperature cyclopentane combustion. Ab initio transition-state-theory based master equation methods are used to calculate pressure-dependent rate constants across four potential energy surfaces (C5H8 + OH, C5H8 + HO2, C5H7, and C5H7 + O2). Potential energy surfaces are characterized at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVDZ-F12//revDSD-PBEP86-D3BJ/def2-TZVPP level of theory. Pressure-dependent rate constants and branching fractions are determined via 1D master equation calculations. The results are used to analyze the competition for radicals between cyclopentene and cyclopentane in the intermediate temperature region, and to identify the dominant pathways flowing from these initiation channels. On the OH initiation surface, we find good agreement with recently published experimental rate constants at high temperature, and we elucidate the complex temperature dependence below 800 K, where 𝜋𝜋 addition becomes prominent. On the HO2 initiation surface, we find an interesting alternative route to bicyclic ether formation via well-skipping over the HO2 adduct well. On the cyclopentenyl radical surface, the major product is cyclopentadiene plus H. On the cyclopentenyl + O2 surface, we find that resonance stabilization largely prevents the allylic radical from undergoing oxidation, whereas the alkylic radical has a somewhat elevated propensity for oxidation pathways relative to cyclopentyl.

Smart quantum statistical imaging beyond the Abbe-Rayleigh criterion

The wave nature of light imposes limits on the resolution of optical imaging systems. For over a century, the Abbe-Rayleigh criterion has been utilized to assess the spatial resolution limits of imaging instruments. Recently, there has been interest in using spatial projective measurements to enhance the resolution of imaging systems. Unfortunately, these schemes require a priori information regarding the coherence properties of “unknown” light beams and impose stringent alignment conditions. Here, we introduce a smart quantum camera for superresolving imaging that exploits the self-learning features of artificial intelligence to identify the statistical fluctuations of unknown mixtures of light sources at each pixel. This is achieved through a universal quantum model that enables the design of artificial neural networks for the identification of photon fluctuations. Our protocol overcomes limitations of existing superresolution schemes based on spatial mode projections, and consequently provides alternative methods for microscopy, remote sensing, and astronomy.

Codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Cl 9

A codimension-two spiral spin liquid is a correlated paramagnetic state with one-dimensional ground state degeneracy hosted within a three-dimensional lattice. Here, in this work, via neutron scattering experiments and numerical simulations, we establish the existence of a codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2⁢ Cl 9 , which demonstrates an alternate path to spiral spin liquids by overcoming the long-standing impediment of weak further-neighbor interactions. In the long-range ordered regime, competing spiral and spin density wave orders emerge as a function of applied magnetic field, among which a possible order-by-disorder transition is identified.

Multiarea Distribution System State Estimation via Distributed Tensor Completion

Here, this paper proposes a model-free distribution system state estimation method based on tensor completion using canonical polyadic decomposition. In particular, we consider a setting where the network is divided into multiple areas. The measured physical quantities at buses located in the same area are processed by an area controller. A three-way tensor is constructed to collect these measured quantities. The measurements are analyzed locally to recover the full state information of the network. A distributed closed-form iterative algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is developed to obtain the low-rank factors of the whole network state tensor where information exchange happens only between neighboring areas. The convergence properties of the distributed algorithm and the sufficient conditions on the number of samples for each smaller network that guarantee the identifiability of the factors of the state tensor are presented. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm and to check the identifiability conditions, numerical simulations are carried out using the IEEE 123-bus system and a large-scale real utility feeder.
