Photon Harvesting and Rocky Planet Biosignatures with 3D Climate Models

On the Earth solar photons are collected, sifted, and harvested by life at a scale that has transformed and defined the planet and continues to do so. That transformation is considered to be a key biosignature to look for in the rocky exoplanet population of our galaxy. However, the availability of photons on planetary surfaces depends on orbital and spin configuration as well as shadowing and scattering by clouds and other atmospheric phenomena. We are using a state-of-the-art 3D climate model (ROCKE-3D, Way et al. 2017) to study rocky planet surface irradiances and the implications for biosignatures and future missions such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory.

A Photonic Clockwork for Deployed Timing and Radar

We present an environmentally robust photonic RF/microwave clockwork with low size, weight, and power (SWaP) for next-generation, field-deployable timing and radar applications. Compared to microwave references, optical local oscillators offer superior fractional frequency stability and phase-noise performance. When transferred with high fidelity into the RF/microwave domain, this “optical advantage” promises unparalleled performance across both private-industry and government (e.g., defense and space-agency) applications including very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), alternative positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), multi-static synthetic aperture radar (MSAR), and geodetic sensing. However, this potential has yet to be fully realized outside the metrology lab primarily due to the high-SWaP and excessive environmental susceptibility of both the optical reference itself as well as the optical frequency comb (OFC) required to transfer the optical stability into the RF/microwave domain. Here, we present two demonstrations of a low-SWaP, environmentally robust photonic clockwork used to make a high-fidelity optical-microwave link with the stability and phase-noise performance relevant to the applications described above. Additionally, operational-testing results of the OFC subsystem under application-relevant environmental conditions will be presented to show pathway to field deployment of this critical subsystem.

Wavelength control and monitor for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) silicon photonic receiver

Techniques and circuitry for wavelength monitor and control are disclosed herein. The disclosed wavelength monitor and control circuitry and techniques are designed to realize a multi-channel DWDM optical link by using a photonic receiver that dynamically adjusts resonant wavelengths of the microring drop filter (MDF), as needed. The wavelength monitor and control circuitry can monitor and control the resonant wavelengths of multiple MDFs for a DWDM silicon photonics receiver with minimum power and area overhead. In an embodiment, circuitry for an optical receiver comprises an MDF having resonant wavelength for multiple DWDM channels, and circuitry to control and monitor the resonant wavelength of the MDF in real-time and in manner that compensates for deviation between actual resonant wavelength of the MDF and the incident optical wavelength of the MDF.

Results on photon-mediated dark matter-nucleus interactions from the PICO-60 C$_{3}$F$_{8}$ bubble chamber

Many compelling models predict dark matter coupling to the electromagnetic current through higher multipole interactions, while remaining electrically neutral. Different multipole couplings have been studied, among them anapole moment, electric and magnetic dipole moments, and millicharge. This study sets limits on the couplings for these photon-mediated interactions using non-relativistic contact operators in an effective field theory framework. Using data from the PICO-60 bubble chamber leading limits for dark matter masses between 2.7 GeV/c$^2$ and 24 GeV/c$^2$ are reported for the coupling of these photon-mediated dark matter-nucleus interactions. The detector was filled with 52 kg of C$_3$F$_8$ operating at thermodynamic thresholds of 2.45 keV and 3.29 keV, reaching exposures of 1404 kg-day and 1167 kg-day, respectively.

Engineering of Form Factor in Rotationally Symmetric Photonic Cavities for Faster Axion Searches

Form factor can be engineered in photonic cavities such that it dramatically increases the scan speed of axion haloscope detectors. Using higher-order modes of a photonic cavity, we can probe axions at larger mass ranges beyond the reach of current detectors that rely on conventional copper cavities. The main idea is to produce a higher-order mode with longitudinal field distribution that has relatively high amplitude away from both the cavity axis and the cavity walls such that it results in a relatively large form factor and maintains a high-quality factor. The detector scan speed significantly increases as it is proportional to the square of the form factor multiplied by the quality factor.

Photonic integrated circuits for generating high-brightness squeezed light

A high-brightness squeezed light source includes a plurality of light squeezing elements and a photonic summing device. The light squeezing elements each output respective squeezed light responsive to receipt of unsqueezed light. The photonic summing device receives the squeezed light output by each of the light squeezing elements and coherently adds the squeezed light to generate a high-brightness squeezed light output. The high-brightness squeezed light output has a greater brightness than the outputs of the light squeezing elements, and a same degree of squeezing as one or more of the outputs of the light squeezing elements.

Piezoelectric deformable photonic devices

A CMOS-compatible actuator platform for implementing phase, amplitude, and frequency modulation in silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits via piezo-optomechanical coupling using tightly mechanically coupled aluminum nitride actuators is disclosed. The platform, which may be fabricated in a CMOS foundry, enables scalable active photonic integrated circuits for visible wavelengths, and the piezoelectric actuation functions without performance degradation down to cryogenic operating temperatures. A number of devices are possible, including ring modulator devices, phase shifter devices, Mach-Zehnder interferometer devices, directional coupler devices (including tunable directional coupler devices), and acousto-optic modulator and frequency shifter devices, each of which can employ the same AlN actuator platform. As all of these devices can be built on the same AlN actuator platform, numerous optical functions can be implemented on a single die.

Multimodal photon and neutron imaging devices with fast event-by-event multisampling readout and optimized particle type discrimination

A particle imaging method for distinguishing between types of incident particles, such as neutrons, photons, and alphas, and improving the position resolution of particle imaging devices with matrix readout. The method includes high frequency multisampling readout electronics that provides the sequences of multiple measurements for each detected event, resulting in recorded detailed waveform information describing the signals. Such detailed information is used to approximate each signal waveform with a parameterized function in which the extracted parameter sets determine the type of the incident particle in an optimized fashion. The detailed event-by-event multisampling information for each signal readout channel in the matrix readout of the radiation imaging devices improves and optimizes the position resolution for variable shapes of the signals. Such devices can be used in mixed radiation fields, creating a new class of multimodal photon and neutron imagers.

Search For Low-Mass Quark-Antiquark Resonances Produced With an Initial State Photon at 13 TeV Using the CMS Detector

We present a search for low-mass narrow qq̅ resonances. This search uses data from LHC pp collisions at a center of mass of 13 TeV in Run 2, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb^{-1}, currently using 10\% of data. Utilizing full Run 2 data allows the use of a lower photon pT threshold trigger than a previous analysis performed with only 2016 data, allowing this analysis to be more sensitive to resonances in the low mass region. We require an initial state photon recoiling against the narrow resonance, leading to the resonance having a high transverse momentum. The high pT decay products of the resonance collimate and are reconstructed as a single large jet with an internal two-pronged substructure. A two-pronged dijet score based on the ParticleNet tagger is used to select jets with two-pronged substructure. The background is estimated via a data-driven method using a transfer factor between the distributions which fail and pass the two-pronged substructure requirement. The new physics signal is searched for as a narrow peak excess above the Standard Model backgrounds in the jet mass spectrum.

Multi-coat polymer photonic crystal films

Polymer composite photonic crystal materials are disclosed as coatings and topcoats which have high reflection (>30%) in a specific range of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as ultraviolet (<400 nm), visible (Vis, 400 nm-700 nm), or near-infrared radiation range (NIR, 700-2000 nm), and relatively low reflection (<20% reflection) in a second, different range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Surprisingly, it was found that through a formulation and additives approach, the optical properties of polymer composite photonic crystal films can be selectively modified from a variety of different coating methods, including spray deposition.

Guided cold atom inertial sensors with membrane integrated photonics on atom trap integrated platforms

A guided cold-atom inertial sensor system comprises an atom trap integrated platform, a laser system, a magnetic field system, a control system, and a computing system. The laser system and magnetic field system are adapted to form a magneto-optical trap (MOT) about a suspended waveguide of the atom trap integrated platform made of membrane integrated photonics. After loading cold atoms from a MOT, the photonic atom trap integrated platform generates one-dimensional guided atoms with an evanescent field optical dipole trap (EF-ODT) along the optical waveguide to create guided atomic accelerometers/gyroscopes. Motion of atomic wavepackets in a superposition state is created along the guided atom geometry by way of state-dependent momentum kicks. The light-pulse sequence of guided atom interferometry splits, redirects, and recombines atomic wavepackets, which allows measurement of atom interference fringes sensitive to inertial forces via a probe laser.

A Blessing in Disguise -- Characterisations of ProtoDUNE photon showers for neutrino measurements in DUNE

This thesis presents three studies performed on ProtoDUNE, a prototype liquid argon time projection chamber for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The first study concerns the readout of detector data by the FELIX data acquisition system, as well as compression studies performed on the same data. The second study concerns the identification of photons created in neutral pion decay, which form a major background to neutrino-produced electrons. The distinction between electrons and photons is based on the differing energy deposition in the initial part of the particle showers they produce. The third study concerns the energy reconstruction of these particle showers in the detector. They have a known energy profile and can thus be used to calibrate the energy reconstruction of particle showers in general, a vital requirement for DUNE’s physics goals.

Probing the Cosmic Axion Background via Axion-Photon Conversion in Filaments

The cosmic axion background (CaB) is a hypothetical population of relativistic axions produced in the early universe. If the CaB is produced from dark matter decays, the axions in this population can convert to photons in the magnetic fields of cosmological filaments, resulting in an isotropic gamma ray background flux. We present new indirect detection constraints on the axion mass and axion-photon coupling, for GeV-TeV dark matter with a decay lifetime below $10^{30}$ sec, by comparing this flux against experimental data. We exclude significant parameter space for axion masses below $10^{-5}$~eV for a broad range of dark matter masses and lifetimes, assuming conservative filament magnetic field strengths ($\sim 1$ nG). For large filament fields ($\sim 100$ nG), our strategy also constrains a portion of the QCD-axion parameter space for TeV-scale dark matter masses.
