Dalitz analysis of $D^0 → K^–π^+η$ decays at Belle

We present the results of the first Dalitz plot analysis of the decay D 0 → K – π + η . The analysis is performed on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 953 fb – 1 collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e + e – KEKB collider. The Dalitz plot is well described by a combination of the six resonant decay channels K ¯ * ( 892 ) 0 η , K – a 0 ( 980 ) + , K – a 2 ( 1320 ) + , K ¯ * ( 1410 ) 0 η , K * ( 1680 ) – π + and K 2 * ( 1980 ) – π + , together with K π and K η S-wave components. The decays K * ( 1680 ) – → K – η and K 2 * ( 1980 ) – → K – η are observed for the first time. We measure ratio of the branching fractions, B ( D 0 → K – π + η ) B ( D 0 → K – π + ) = 0.500 ± 0.002 ( stat ) ± 0.020 ( syst ) ± 0.003 ( B PDG ) . Using the Dalitz fit result, the ratio B ( K * ( 1680 ) → K η ) B ( K * ( 1680 ) → K π ) is measured to be 0.11 ± 0.02 ( stat ) – 0.04 + 0.06 ( syst ) ± 0.04 ( B PDG ) ; this is much lower than the theoretical expectations ( ≈ 1 ) made under the assumption that K * ( 1680 ) is a pure 1 3 D 1 state. The product branching fraction B ( D 0 → [ K 2 * ( 1980 ) – → K – η ] π + ) = ( 2. 2 – 1.9 + 1.7 ) × 10 – 4 is determined. In addition, the π η ' contribution to the a 0 ( 980 ) ± resonance shape is confirmed with 10.1 σ statistical significance using the three-channel Flatté model. We also measure B ( D 0 → K ¯ * ( 892 ) 0 η ) = ( 1.4 1 – 0.12 + 0.13 ) % . This is consistent with, and more precise than, the current world average ( 1.02 ± 0.30 ) % , deviates with a significance of more than 3 σ from the theoretical predictions of (0.51–0.92)%.

Searching for axionlike particles from core-collapse supernovae with Fermi LAT’s low-energy technique

Light axionlike particles (ALPs) are expected to be abundantly produced in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), resulting in a ~ 10 -second long burst of ALPs. These particles subsequently undergo conversion into gamma rays in external magnetic fields to produce a long gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a characteristic spectrum peaking in the 30–100-MeV energy range. At the same time, CCSNe are invoked as progenitors of ordinary long GRBs, rendering it relevant to conduct a comprehensive search for ALP spectral signatures using the observations of long GRBs with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). We perform a data-driven sensitivity analysis to determine CCSN distances for which a detection of an ALP signal is possible with the LAT’s low-energy technique which, in contrast to the standard LAT analysis, allows for a a larger effective area for energies down to 30 MeV. Assuming an ALP mass m a ≲ 10 - 10 eV and ALP-photon coupling g a γ = 5.3 × 10 - 12 GeV - 1 , values considered and deduced in ALP searches from SN1987A, we find that the distance limit ranges from ~ 0.5 to ~ 10 Mpc , depending on the sky location and the CCSN progenitor mass. Furthermore, we select a candidate sample of 24 GRBs and carry out a model comparison analysis in which we consider different GRB spectral models with and without an ALP signal component. We find that the inclusion of an ALP contribution does not result in any statistically significant improvement of the fits to the data. Finally, we discuss the statistical method used in our analysis and the underlying physical assumptions, the feasibility of setting upper limits on the ALP-photon coupling, and give an outlook on future telescopes in the context of ALP searches.

Adversarial methods to reduce simulation bias in neutrino interaction event filtering at liquid argon time projection chambers

For current and future neutrino oscillation experiments using large liquid argon time projection chambers (LAr-TPCs), a key challenge is identifying neutrino interactions from the pervading cosmic-ray background. Rejection of such background is often possible using traditional cut-based selections, but this typically requires the prior use of computationally expensive reconstruction algorithms. This work demonstrates an alternative approach of using a 3D submanifold sparse convolutional network trained on low-level information from the scintillation light signal of interactions inside LAr-TPCs. This technique is applied to example simulations from ICARUS, the far detector of the short baseline neutrino program at Fermilab. The results of the network, show that cosmic background is reduced by up to 76.3% whilst neutrino interaction selection efficiency remains over 98.9%. We further present a way to mitigate potential biases from imperfect input simulations by applying domain adversarial neural networks (DANNs), for which modified simulated samples are introduced to imitate real data and a small portion of them are used for adversarial training. A series of mock-data studies are performed and demonstrate the effectiveness of using DANNs to mitigate biases, showing neutrino interaction selection efficiency performances significantly better than that achieved without the adversarial training.

Measurement of the electroweak production of W$\gamma$ in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement is presented for the electroweak production of a W boson, a photon ($\gamma$), and two jets (j) in proton-proton collisions. The leptonic decay of the W boson is selected by requiring one identified electron or muon and large missing transverse momentum. The two jets are required to have large invariant dijet mass and large separation in pseudorapidity. The measurement is performed with the data collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 . The cross section for the electroweak W$\gamma$jj production is 23.5$^{+4.9}_{–4.7}$ fb , whereas the total cross section for W$\gamma$jj production is 113 ± 13 fb . Differential cross sections are also measured with the distributions unfolded to the particle level. All results are in agreement with the standard model expectations. Constraints are placed on anomalous quartic gauge couplings (aQGCs) in terms of dimension-8 effective field theory operators. These are the most stringent limits to date on the aQGCs parameters $f$ M,2–5 /Λ 4 and $f$ T,6–7 /Λ 4 .

Search for resonance-enhanced C P and angular asymmetries in the Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay at LHCb

The first measurement of the C P asymmetry of the decay rate ( A C P ) and the C P average ( Σ A FB ) and C P asymmetry ( Δ A FB ) of the forward-backward asymmetry in the muon system of Λ c + → p μ + μ − decays is reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 . The asymmetries are measured in two regions of dimuon mass near the ϕ -meson mass peak. The dimuon-mass integrated results are A C P = ( − 1.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.5 ) % , Σ A FB = ( 3.9 ± 4.0 ± 0.6 ) % , Δ A FB = ( 3.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with the conservation of C P symmetry and the Standard Model expectations. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Measurement of Λ b 0 , Λ c + , and Λ Decay Parameters Using Λ b 0 → Λ c + h − Decays

A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays Λ b 0 → Λ c + h − ( h = π , K ) , followed by Λ c + → Λ h + with Λ → p π − or Λ c + → p K S 0 decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ( C P ) asymmetries are measured, with no significant C P violation observed. For the first time, the Λ b 0 → Λ c + h − decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters α , β , and γ are obtained for Λ c + decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon Λ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for a Neutral Gauge Boson with Nonuniversal Fermion Couplings in Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The first search for a heavy neutral spin-1 gauge boson (𝑍′) with nonuniversal fermion couplings produced via vector boson fusion processes and decaying to tau leptons or 𝑊 bosons is presented. The analysis is performed using LHC data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV, collected from 2016 to 2018 with the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The data are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits are set on the product of the cross section for production of the 𝑍′ boson and its branching fraction to 𝜏⁢𝜏 or 𝑊⁢𝑊. The presence of a 𝑍′ boson decaying to 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − (𝑊 + ⁢𝑊 − ) is excluded for masses up to 2.45(1.60) TeV, depending on the 𝑍′ boson coupling to standard model weak bosons, and assuming a 𝑍′→𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − (𝑊 + ⁢𝑊 − ) branching fraction of 50%.

Towards the extraction of the crystal cell parameters from pair distribution function profiles

The approach based on atomic pair distribution function (PDF) has revolutionized structural investigations by X-ray/electron diffraction of nano or quasi-amorphous materials, opening up the possibility of exploring short-range order. However, the ab initio crystal structural solution by the PDF is far from being achieved due to the difficulty in determining the crystallographic properties of the unit cell. A method for estimating the crystal cell parameters directly from a PDF profile is presented, which is composed of two steps: first, the type of crystal cell is inferred using machine-learning approaches applied to the PDF profile; second, the crystal cell parameters are extracted by means of multivariate analysis combined with vector superposition techniques. The procedure has been validated on a large number of PDF profiles calculated from known crystal structures and on a small number of measured PDF profiles. The lattice determination step has been benchmarked by a comprehensive exploration of different classifiers and different input data. The highest performance is obtained using the k -nearest neighbours classifier applied to whole PDF profiles. Descriptors calculated from the PDF profiles by recurrence quantitative analysis produce results that can be interpreted in terms of PDF properties, and the significance of each descriptor in determining the prediction is evaluated. The cell parameter extraction step depends on the cell metric rather than its type. Monometric, dimetric and trimetric cells have top-1 estimates that are correct 40, 20 and 5% of the time, respectively. Promising results were obtained when analysing real nanocrystals, where unit cells close to the true ones are found within the top-1 ranked solution in the case of monometric cells and within the top-6 ranked solutions in the case of dimetric cells, even in the presence of a crystalline impurity with a weight fraction up to 40%.

RADEMACHER COMPLEXITY REGULARIZATION FOR CORRELATION-BASED MULTIVIEW REPRESENTATION LEARNING

Deep correlation-based multiview representation learning techniques have become increasingly popular methods for extracting highly correlated representations from multiview data. However, their ability to find highly complex mappings between the views can also lead to overfitting and overly correlated representations. In this work, we propose a regularizer for this specific problem, based on the Rademacher complexity of the DNNs, tailored for multiview correlation maximization. We demonstrate that the proposed regularization leads to less noisy representations in synthetic data and improved performance of downstream tasks in real-world multiview datasets.

Measurement-Based Approach for Inertia-Trend Analysis of the US Western Interconnection

Rising deployment of inverter-based resources (IBRs), characterized by a lack of rotating mass, is decreasing the total inertia of the system. This can lead to an increased Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) during the disturbance and false activation of protective devices. There is a need to assess the inertia over the past decade amidst the evolving landscape of renewable energy sources to develop strategies for integrating energy storage, enhancing resilience measures, and ensuring the stable and reliable operation of the grid. Therefore, a realistic assessment of the inertia trend using a measurement-based approach that addresses the limitations of existing models is proposed. An inertia study of the Western Interconnection in the United States is performed utilizing the data from 2013 to 2022, obtained from FNET/ GridEye network. The three-second RoCoF time window is chosen for the study as it showed an optimum balance between a strong correlation with the power imbalance (ΔP) and minimum inclusion of primary response from governor. The obtained inertia trend result shows a small percentage declination of inertia over the decade. By examining the result alongside a generation mix graph, insights are gained into the dynamic interplay between shifting energy landscape and system inertia.

Optimization and Augmentation for Data Parallel Contour Trees

Contour trees are used for topological data analysis in scientific visualization. While originally computed with serial algorithms, recent work has introduced a vector-parallel algorithm. Furthermore, this algorithm is relatively slow for fully augmented contour trees which are needed for many practical data analysis tasks. We therefore introduce a representation called the hyperstructure that enables efficient searches through the contour tree and use it to construct a fully augmented contour tree in data parallel, with performance on average 6 times faster than the state-of-the-art parallel algorithm in the TTK topological toolkit.

Search for a heavy Higgs boson decaying into a Z boson and another heavy Higgs boson in the $\ell \ell bb$ and $\ell \ell WW$ final states in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\text {TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for a heavy neutral Higgs boson, A decaying into a Z boson and another heavy Higgs boson, H, is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1 from proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search considers the Z boson decaying into electrons or muons and the H boson into a pair of b-quarks or W bosons. The mass range considered is 230–800 $\text {GeV}$ for the A boson and 130–700 $\text {GeV}$ for the H boson. The data are in good agreement with the background predicted by the Standard Model, and therefore 95% confidence-level upper limits for $\sigma \times B(A\rightarrow ZH)\times B(H\rightarrow bb \; \text {or} \; H \rightarrow WW)$ are set. The upper limits are in the range 0.0062–0.380 pb for the $H\rightarrow bb$ channel and in the range 0.023–8.9 pb for the $H\rightarrow WW$ channel. An interpretation of the results in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models is also given.

Characterization of Cycle-Aged Commercial NMC and NCA Lithium-ion Cells: I. Temperature-Dependent Degradation

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in applications from consumer electronic devices to stationary energy storage. Appropriate management of batteries is challenging due to limited data on their performance and materials degradation. Previous studies have focused on characterization of single cells under specific operating conditions. In the present work, commercial 18650 lithium-ion cells with LiNi x Mn y Co 1-x-y O 2 (NMC) and LiNi x Co y Al 1-x-y O 2 (NCA) positive electrodes were characterized by a wide range of electrochemical and materials techniques after cycling at 15, 25, or 35 °C to ∼80% capacity. The NCA cells exhibit weak temperature dependence in their cycle aging and materials degradation. The NMC cells exhibited increased capacity fade and materials degradation as ambient temperature decreased. All cells exhibited loss of lithium inventory as their primary degradation mode. However, the NCA cells only showed evidence of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth whereas the NMC cells showed signs of Li plating at 15 °C, transitioning to SEI growth at 35 °C. The NMC cells displayed signs of loss of active material at the positive electrode at lower temperatures, suggesting that Li plating is correlated to additional processes that increase the rate of degradation. These results highlight the importance of avoiding broad generalizations about Li-ion battery temperature dependence.

Detection of a Cobalt-Containing Interphase at the Li 6 PS 5 Cl-NMC111 Interface by In Situ μ XANES and EIS

Sulfide electrolyte all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASLBs) with uncoated Li-Ni x Mn y Co 1–x–y O 2 (NMC) cathodes suffer from a large capacity loss during initial cycling and an increase in cell impedance. Decomposition reactions are known to occur at the Li 6 PS 5 Cl-NMC111 interface due to incompatibility between the two materials. If a stabilizing coating is applied to the NMC, it delivers full capacity during initial charge. However, the loss in capacity during discharge still occurs. The interface was studied by μ XANES and through EIS analysis. A chemically-formed interphase was detected by μ XANES, evident from reduction of Co at an uncoated NMC particle surface. This interphase was produced by decomposition at rest. To study the effect of the interphase on electrochemically active surface area, piecewise in situ EIS was performed and the data was modeled using a transmission line model (TLM). The charge transfer resistance R CT was used to estimate the volume specific active surface area (a act ). The median value for a act was 296 cm –1 , a factor of 7.5 lower than the theoretical value of 2216 cm –1 . This provided evidence of a lower electrochemically active surface area in the ASLB.

An Open-source Llm Enhanced-tool Specialized In Helping Moose Related Problems And Tasks

MOOSEenger is an open-source, terminal-first chat application for the MOOSE ecosystem that couples specialized parsing of MOOSE documentation and “.i” input files with retrieval-augmented generation to deliver grounded answers about multiphysics modeling and workflows. It includes dedicated readers for MOOSE-style HTML and a pyhit-based parser that uses the MOOSE syntax tree to preserve block structure and attach retrieval metadata. A data-ingestion pipeline performs semantic chunking into atomic facts and stores them hierarchically in a local Chroma vector database that maintains parent–child relationships across documents; the system can ingest directories, individual files, and single-page web content, and it provides CRUD operations (insert, update, delete) to manage the corpus. At query time, relevant chunks are embedded, retrieved, and fused into the model context, with interactive features such as token streaming, persistent chat history, and dynamic RAG (retrieval triggered by user input or intermediate model output). Deployment is flexible: MOOSEenger runs with local Ollama models or remote Hugging Face/OpenAI backends—typically coordinating generation, lightweight tagging/summarization, and embeddings across three models—and it also supports a server mode and integration with the VS Code Continue interface.

Lagrangian and Eulerian Supersaturation Statistics in Turbulent Cloudy Rayleigh–Bénard Convection: Applications for LES Subgrid Modeling

Abstract Turbulent fluctuations of scalar and velocity fields are critical for cloud microphysical processes, e.g., droplet activation and size distribution evolution, and can therefore influence cloud radiative forcing and precipitation formation. Lagrangian and Eulerian water vapor, temperature, and supersaturation statistics are investigated in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection in the Pi Convection Cloud Chamber to provide a foundation for parameterizing subgrid-scale fluctuations in atmospheric models. A subgrid model for water vapor and temperature variances and covariance and supersaturation variance is proposed, valid for both clear and cloudy conditions. Evaluation of phase change contributions through an a priori test using DNS data shows good performance of the model. Supersaturation is a nonlinear function of temperature and water vapor, and relative external fluxes of water vapor and heat (e.g., during entrainment-mixing and phase change) influence turbulent supersaturation fluctuations. Although supersaturation has autocorrelation and structure functions similar to the independent scalars (temperature and water vapor), the autocorrelation time scale of supersaturation differs. Relative scalar fluxes in DNS without cloud make supersaturation PDFs less skewed than the adiabatic case, where they are highly negatively skewed. However, droplet condensation changes the PDF shape response: it becomes positively skewed for the adiabatic case and negatively skewed when the sidewall relative fluxes are large. Condensation also increases correlations between water vapor and temperature in the presence of relative scalar fluxes but decreases correlations for the adiabatic case. These changes in correlation suppress supersaturation variability for the nonadiabatic cases and increase it for the adiabatic case. Implications of this work for subgrid microphysics modeling using a Lagrangian stochastic scheme are also discussed.
