Observation of Enhanced Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Lead Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 8.16 TeV

A study of prompt charm-hadron pair production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}$ = 8.16 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 30 nb -1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. Production cross sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

From One- to Two-Magnon Excitations in the S = 3 / 2 Magnet β - CaCr 2 O 4

Here, we apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the magnetic dynamics in the S = 3 / 2 magnet β-CaCr 2 O 4 ( T N = 21 K ). The low-energy fluctuations, in the ordered state, resemble large- S linear spin waves from the incommensurate ground state. However, at higher energy transfers, these semiclassical and harmonic dynamics are replaced by an energy and momentum broadened continuum of excitations. Applying kinematic constraints required for energy and momentum conservation, sum rules of neutron scattering, and comparison against exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the dynamics at high-energy transfers resemble low- S one-dimensional quantum fluctuations. β-CaCr 2 O 4 represents an example of a magnet at the border between classical Néel and quantum phases, displaying dual characteristics.

Scattering of Magnons at Graphene Quantum-Hall-Magnet Junctions

Motivated by recent nonlocal transport studies of quantum-Hall-magnet (QHM) states formed in monolayer graphene’s N = 0 Landau level, here we study the scattering of QHM magnons by gate-controlled junctions between states with different integer filling factors ν . For the ν = 1 | – 1 | 1 geometry we find that magnons are weakly scattered by electric potential variation in the junction region, and that the scattering is chiral when the junction lacks a mirror symmetry. For the ν = 1 | 0 | 1 geometry, we find that kinematic constraints completely block magnon transmission if the incident angle exceeds a critical value. Our results explain the suppressed nonlocal–voltage signals observed in the ν = 1 | 0 | 1 case. We use our theory to propose that valley waves generated at ν = – 1 | 1 junctions and magnons can be used in combination to probe the spin or valley flavor structure of QHM states at integer and fractional filling factors.

Measurement of the Sixth-Order Cumulant of Net-Proton Multiplicity Distributions in Au + Au Collisions at s NN = 27 , 54.4, and 200 GeV at RHIC

According to first principle Lattice QCD calculations, the transition from quark-gluon plasma to hadronic matter is a smooth crossover in the region µB ≤ Tc. As a result, higher-order cumulants and their ratios are predicted to be negative, C 6 /C 2 < 0, for example. In this paper, we report the first measurement of the midrapidity net-proton C 6 /C 2 from 27, 54.4 and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The dependence on collision centrality and kinematic acceptance in (p T, y ) are analyzed. While for 27 and 54.4 GeV collisions the C 6 /C 2 values are close to zero within uncertainties, it is observed that for 200 GeV collisions, the C 6 /C 2 ratio becomes progressively negative from peripheral to central collisions. Transport model calculations without critical dynamics predict values around zero. These observations seem to favor a smooth crossover in the high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC.

Measurements of Proton High-Order Cumulants in s N N = 3 GeV Au + Au Collisions and Implications for the QCD Critical Point

We report cumulants of the proton multiplicity distribution from dedicated fixed-target Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3.0 GeV , measured by the STAR experiment in the kinematic acceptance of rapidity ( y ) and transverse momentum ( p T ) within - 0.5 < y < 0 and 0.4 < pT < 2.0 GeV / c . In the most central 0%–5% collisions, a proton cumulant ratio is measured to be C 4 / C 2 = - 0.85 ± 0.09 ( stat ) ± 0.82 ( syst ) , which is 2 σ below the Poisson baseline with respect to both the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The hadronic transport UrQMD model reproduces our C 4 / C 2 in the measured acceptance. Compared to higher energy results and the transport model calculations, the suppression in C 4 / C 2 is consistent with fluctuations driven by baryon number conservation and indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions. These data imply that the QCD critical region, if created in heavy-ion collisions, could only exist at energies higher than 3 GeV.

Observation of a Near-Threshold Proton Resonance in 11 B

A near-threshold proton resonance in 11 B at 𝐸 ex = 11.44 ± 0.04 MeV is observed via the reaction 10 Be⁢(𝑑,𝑛)⁢ 11 B → 10 Be + 𝑝 in inverse kinematics, measured with a beam of the radioactive isotope 10 Be. The resonance energy at 𝐸 res = 211⁢(40) keV is consistent with a proton signal observed by Ayyad et al. in the 𝛽-delayed proton decay of 11 Be. By comparison to a distorted wave Born approximation calculation, a 0.27(6) spectroscopic factor is extracted and a tentative (ℓ = 0) character is assigned for this resonance. The significant cross section in the proton-transfer (𝑑,𝑛) reaction, as well as the observation of its proton-decay signal, point to the threshold-resonance character of this state. The position of this state, its structure, and strong coupling to the 𝑠-wave continuum represent an ideal case to study quantum near-threshold many-body dynamics of unstable states. In conclusion, the presence of this state is an important step toward understanding the excessively large beta-delayed proton-decay branch of 11 Be.

Doppler Boosted Dust Emission and Cosmic Infrared Background–Galaxy Cross-Correlations: A New Probe of Cosmology and Astrophysics

We identify a new cosmological signal, the Doppler-boosted Cosmic Infrared Background (DB-CIB), arising from the peculiar motion of the galaxies whose thermal dust emission source the cosmic infrared background (CIB). This new observable is an independent probe of the cosmic velocity field, highly analogous to the well-known kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (KSZ) effect. Interestingly, DB-CIB does not suffer from the "KSZ optical depth degeneracy", making it immune from the complex astrophysics of galaxy formation. We forecast that the DB CIB effect is detectable in the cross-correlation of CCAT-Prime and DESI-like experiments. Here,we show that it also acts as a new CMB foreground which can bias future KSZ cross-correlations, if not properly accounted for.

Generation of Near-Equipartition Magnetic Fields in Turbulent Collisionless Plasmas

The mechanisms that generate “seed” magnetic fields in our Universe and that amplify them throughout cosmic time remain poorly understood. By means of fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of turbulent, initially unmagnetized plasmas, here we study the genesis of magnetic fields via the Weibel instability and follow their dynamo growth up to near-equipartition levels. In the kinematic stage of the dynamo, we find that the rms magnetic field strength grows exponentially with rate γ B ≃0.4⁢u rms /L, where L/2⁢π is the driving scale and u rms is the rms turbulent velocity. In the saturated stage, the magnetic field energy reaches about half of the turbulent kinetic energy. Here, magnetic field growth is balanced by dissipation via reconnection, as revealed by the appearance of plasmoid chains. At saturation, the integral-scale wave number of the magnetic spectrum approaches k int ≃12⁢π/L. Our results show that turbulence—induced by, e.g., the gravitational buildup of galaxies and galaxy clusters—can magnetize collisionless plasmas with large-scale near-equipartition fields.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV Pb + Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72 nb –1 and 257 pb –1 of Pb + Pb and pp data, respectively. The large-radius jets are reconstructed with the anti-k t algorithm using a radius parameter of R = 1.0, by reclustering anti-k t R = 0.2 jets, and are measured over the transverse momentum (p T ) kinematic range of 158 < p T <1000 GeV and absolute pseudorapidity |y| < 2.0. The large-radius jet constituents are further reclustered using the k t algorithm in order to obtain the splitting parameters, $\sqrt{d_{12}}$ and Δ⁢R 12 , which characterize the transverse momentum scale and angular separation for the hardest splitting in the jet, respectively. The nuclear modification factor, R AA , obtained by comparing the Pb + Pb jet yields to those in pp collisions, is measured as a function of jet transverse momentum (p T ) and $\sqrt{d_{12}}$ or Δ⁢R 12 . A significant difference in the quenching of large-radius jets having single subjet and those with more complex substructure is observed. Systematic comparison of jet suppression in terms of R AA for different jet definitions is also provided. Presented results support the hypothesis that jets with hard internal splittings lose more energy through quenching and provide a new perspective for understanding the role of jet structure in jet suppression.

Search for a Nonrelativistic Boson in Two-Body Antimuon Decay

We demonstrate the feasibility of probing the charged lepton-flavor-violating decay μ + → e + X 0 for the presence of a slow-moving neutral boson X 0 capable of undergoing gravitational binding to large structures and, as such, able to participate in some cosmological scenarios. A short exposure to surface antimuons from beam line M20 at TRIUMF generates a branching ratio limit of ≲ 10 –5 . This is comparable to or better than previous searches for this channel, although in a thus-far-unexplored region of X 0 phase space very close to the kinematic limit of the decay, where m X 0 approaches m μ+ . The future improved sensitivity of the method using a customized p -type point-contact germanium detector is described.

Back-to-Back Inclusive Dijets in Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x : Complete NLO Results and Predictions

We compute the back-to-back dijet cross section in deep inelastic scattering at small x to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the color glass condensate effective field theory. Our result can be factorized into a convolution of the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function (WW gluon TMD) with a universal soft factor and an NLO coefficient function. The soft factor includes both double and single logarithms in the ratio of the relative transverse momentum P ⊥ of the dijet pair to the dijet momentum imbalance q ⊥ ; its renormalization group (RG) evolution is resummed into the Sudakov factor. Likewise, the WW TMD obeys a nonlinear RG equation in x that is kinematically constrained to satisfy both the lifetime and rapidity ordering of the projectile. Exact analytical expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient function of transversely and longitudinally polarized photons. Our results allow for the first quantitative separation of the dynamics of Sudakov suppression from that of gluon saturation. They can be extended to other final states and provide a framework for precision tests of novel QCD many-body dynamics at the Electron-Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p + Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165 nb − 1 of p + Pb data collected at s NN = 8.16 TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p + Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R CP , is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R CP shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x p , while no such trend is observed as a function of x Pb . This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p + Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x p ∼ 10 − 3 and x Pb ∼ 4 × 10 − 4 . © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2024 CERN

First Search for Dark-Trident Processes Using the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a first search for dark-trident scattering in a neutrino beam using a dataset corresponding to 7.2 × 10 20 protons on target taken with the MicroBooNE detector at Fermilab. Proton interactions in the neutrino target at the main injector produce π 0 and η mesons, which could decay into dark-matter (DM) particles mediated via a dark photon A ′ . A convolutional neural network is trained to identify interactions of the DM particles in the liquid-argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) exploiting its imagelike reconstruction capability. In the absence of a DM signal, we provide limits at the 90% confidence level on the squared kinematic mixing parameter ϵ 2 as a function of the dark-photon mass in the range 10 ≤ M A ′ ≤ 400 MeV . The limits cover previously unconstrained parameter space for the production of fermion or scalar DM particles χ for two benchmark models with mass ratios M χ / M A ′ = 0.6 and 2 and for dark fine-structure constants 0.1 ≤ α D ≤ 1 . Scalar and Tensor Charmonium Resonances in Coupled-Channel Scattering from Lattice QCD

We determine J P C = 0 + + and 2 + + hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in the charmonium energy region up to 4100 MeV using lattice QCD, a first-principles approach to QCD. Working at m π ≈ 391 MeV , more than 200 finite-volume energy levels are computed and these are used in extensions of the Lüscher formalism to determine infinite-volume coupled-channel scattering amplitudes. We find that this energy region contains a single χ c 0 and a single χ c 2 resonance. Both are found as pole singularities on the closest unphysical Riemann sheet, just below 4000 MeV with widths around 70 MeV. The largest couplings are to kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channels in S -wave, and couplings to several decay channels consisting of pairs of open-charm mesons are found to be large and significant in both cases. Above the ground state χ c 0 , no other scalar bound states or near- D D ¯ threshold resonances are found, in contrast to several theoretical and experimental studies. Gravitational Form Factors of the Proton from Lattice QCD

The gravitational form factors (GFFs) of a hadron encode fundamental aspects of its structure, including its shape and size as defined from, e.g., its energy density. This Letter presents a determination of the flavor decomposition of the GFFs of the proton from lattice QCD, in the kinematic region 0 ≤−𝑡 ≤2 GeV 2 . The decomposition into up-, down-, strange-quark, and gluon contributions provides first-principles constraints on the role of each constituent in generating key proton structure observables, such as its mechanical radius, mass radius, and 𝐷 term.

First Simultaneous Measurement of Differential Muon-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon for Final States with and without Protons Using MicroBooNE Data

We report the first double-differential neutrino-argon cross section measurement made simultaneously for final states with and without protons for the inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interaction channel. The proton kinematics of this channel are further explored with a differential cross section measurement as a function of the leading proton’s kinetic energy that extends across the detection threshold. These measurements use data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4 × 10 20 protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of ∼ 0.8 GeV . Extensive data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed. This motivates enlarging the uncertainties with an empirical reweighting approach to minimize the possibility of extracting biased cross section results. The extracted nominal flux-averaged cross sections are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing severe mismodeling of final states without protons for muon neutrino charged-current interactions, possibly from insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These measurements provide a wealth of new information useful for improving event generators which will enhance the sensitivity of precision measurements in neutrino experiments. Probing the Quark Orbital Angular Momentum at Electron-Ion Colliders Using Exclusive π 0 Production

We propose to detect signals from quark orbital angular momentum (OAM) through exclusive π 0 production in electron- (longitudinally polarized) proton collisions. Our analysis demonstrates that the sin 2 ϕ azimuthal angular correlation between the transverse momentum of the scattered electron and the recoil proton serves as a sensitive probe of quark OAM. Additionally, we present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry associated with this correlation for the kinematics accessible at the Electron-Ion Colliders in the U.S. and China. This study aims to pave the way for the first experimental study of quark OAM in relation to the Jaffe-Manohar spin sum rule. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

N = 8 Supergravity from Positivity

The duality between color and kinematics brings many simplifications to the construction of scattering amplitudes. Here, we show that satisfaction of the tree-level Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations can dramatically simplify loop computations even when the loop-level relations are not explicitly satisfied. We introduce an agglomerative algorithm, color-dual cut tiling, that builds the entire integrand from the simplest on-shell conditions applied to a seed of off-shell integrand information. Specifically, we demonstrate that for two-to-two scattering at three loops in the maximally supersymmetric gauge theory there is sufficient information contained in planar cuts—completely determined by positivity constraints—to generate all of the nonplanar sector. We further make use of the generalized double copy to generate a representation of maximally supersymmetric gravity as a functional of the planar SYM input. We close with comments on generalizations and possible applications of the approach. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
