Fast, Nonspattering Inert-Gas Welding

Proposed welding technique combines best features of metal (other than tungsten)/inert-gas welding, plasma arc welding, and tungsten/inert-gas welding. Advantages include: wire fed to weld joint preheated, therefore fed at high speed without spattering; high-frequency energy does not have to be supplied to workpiece to initiate welding; size of arc gap not critical, power-supply control circuit adjusts voltage across gap to compensate for changes; only low gas-flow rate needed; welding electrode replaced easily as prefabricated assembly; external wire-feeding manipulator not needed; and welding process relatively forgiving of operator error.

Fast Magnetoresistive Random-Access Memory

Magnetoresistive binary digital memories of proposed new type expected to feature high speed, nonvolatility, ability to withstand ionizing radiation, high density, and low power. In memory cell, magnetoresistive effect exploited more efficiently by use of ferromagnetic material to store datum and adjacent magnetoresistive material to sense datum for readout. Because relative change in sensed resistance between "zero" and "one" states greater, shorter sampling and readout access times achievable.

A fast, reliable algorithm for computing frequency responses of state space models

Computation of frequency responses for large order systems described by time invariant state space systems often provides a bottleneck in control system analysis. It is shown that banding the A-matrix in the state space model can effectively reduce the computation time for such systems while maintaining reliability in the results produced.

Fast magnetization of a high-to-low-beta plasma beam

The magnetization of a high-beta (plasma energy density/magnetic-field energy density) hydrogen-plasma beam injected into a vacuum transverse magnetic field is studied experimentally. Nominal parameters were Ti = 1 eV, Te = 5 eV, n = 3 x 10 to the 13th/cu cm or less, v(i) = 7 x 10 to the 6th cm/sec or less, t(pulse) less than 70 microsec, and Bz = 300 G or less. Plasma characteristics were measured for a wide beam and a downstream distance, x = 300 rho(i) or less, where x is the downstream distance and rho(i) is the ion gyroradius. A brief initial state of diamagnetic propagation is observed, followed by magnetized propagation accompanied by beam compression transverse to B with as much as a factor of 4 increase in density and a slight drift of the beam in the ion Lorentz force direction.

A fast upwind solver for the Euler equations on three-dimensional unstructured meshes

An upwind scheme is presented for solving the three-dimensional Euler equations on unstructured tetrahedral meshes. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite-volume formulation using flux-difference splitting. Higher-order differences are formed by a novel cell reconstruction process which results in computational times per cell comparable to those of structured codes. The approach yields highly resolved solutions in regions of smooth flow while avoiding oscillations across shocks without explicit limiting. Solutions are advanced in time by a 3-stage Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme with convergence accelerated to steady state by local time stepping and implicit residual smoothing. Solutions are presented for a range of configurations in the transonic speed regime to demonstrate code accuracy, speed, and robustness. The results include an assessment of grid sensitivity and convergence acceleration by mesh sequencing.

Magnetic field configurations associated with fast solar wind

The implications are considered of the observed inverse correlation between solar wind speed at earth and the expansion rate of the sun-earth flux tube as it passes through the corona. It is found that the coronal expansion rate depends critically on the large-scale photospheric field distribution around the footpoint of the flux tube. The smallest expansions occur in tubes that are rooted near a local minimum in the field. This suggests that the fastest wind streams originate from regions where large coronal holes are about to break apart and from the facing edges of adjacent like-polarity holes, whose field lines converge as they transit the corona. Predictions are made which follow from the above ideas.

Fast orbit propagator for graphical display

A simple analytic orbit propagator is presented which incorporates a mean-to-osculating transformation to generate a graphical display of the trajectories of earth-orbiting satellites. The first-order effects of the oblateness of the earth on the orbit are consistently included. The propagator encompasses a mean-to-osculating transformation on the semimajor axis, since large intrack errors can be generated by failing to observe the distinction between the mean and osculating values of this parameter.

Astro - Science in the fast lane

The Space Shuttle mission devoted to astronomy (Astro) is described and data obtained during the nine-day flight are briefly reviewed. The Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment reveals a trough at 2200 A in the spectrum of Alpha Camelopardalis. It is suggested that the 2200-A feature is caused by absorption by graphite-rich interstellar dust. The Broad Band X-ray Telescope made it possible to study the NGC 1399 X-ray spectrum, the spectrum of the BL Lacertae object PKS 2155-304, and a cooling flow in a cluster of galaxies. The Astro mission's search for the missing mass in the form of neutrinos is discussed. Attention is also given to the effect of delays on the Astro activity, and to equipment problems and how they were solved.

Why fast solar wind originates from slowly expanding coronal flux tubes

Empirical studies indicate that the solar wind speed at earth is inversely correlated with the divergence rate of the coronal magnetic field. It is shown that this result is consistent with simple wind acceleration models involving Alfven waves, provided that the wave energy flux at the coronal base is taken to be roughly constant within open field regions.

Ordered fast Fourier transforms on a massively parallel hypercube multiprocessor

The present evaluation of alternative, massively parallel hypercube processor-applicable designs for ordered radix-2 decimation-in-frequency FFT algorithms gives attention to the reduction of computation time-dominating communication. A combination of the order and computational phases of the FFT is accordingly employed, in conjunction with sequence-to-processor maps which reduce communication. Two orderings, 'standard' and 'cyclic', in which the order of the transform is the same as that of the input sequence, can be implemented with ease on the Connection Machine (where orderings are determined by geometries and priorities. A parallel method for trigonometric coefficient computation is presented which does not employ trigonometric functions or interprocessor communication.

Fast likelihood classification

A multistage classification that reduces the processing time substantially is proposed. This classification algorithm consists of several stages, and in each stage likelihood values of classes are calculated and compared. If a class has a likelihood value less than a threshold, the class if truncated at that stage as an unlikely class, thus reducing the number of classes for which likelihood values are to be calculated at the next stage. Thus a host of classes can be truncated using a small portion of the total features at early stages, resulting in substantial reduction of computing time. Several truncation criteria are developed, and the relationship between thresholds and the error caused by the truncation is investigated. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm reduces the processing time by the factor of 3-7, depending on the number of classes and features, while maintaining essentially the same accuracies.

Discovery of a fast radiative shock wave in the Cygnus Loop using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope

Observations of the far-ultraviolet spectrum of a bright radiative filament on the eastern edge of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant are described which were made through the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope aboard the Astro-1 Space Shuttle mission in December 1990. Observations include strong emission lines of C III 977, N III 991, and O VI 032, 1038 and many fainter lines. A comparison of this spectrum with shock model calculations indicates that the emission at this position in the Cygnus Loop is dominated by 170 km/s shock wave.

Design of a fast computer-based partial discharge diagnostic system

Partial discharges cause progressive deterioration of insulating materials working in high voltage conditions and may lead ultimately to insulator failure. Experimental findings indicate that deterioration increases with the number of discharges and is consequently proportional to the magnitude and frequency of the applied voltage. In order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms of deterioration produced by partial discharges, instrumentation capable of individual pulse resolution is required. A new computer-based partial discharge detection system was designed and constructed to conduct long duration tests on sample capacitors. This system is capable of recording large number of pulses without dead time and producing valuable information related to amplitude, polarity, and charge content of the discharges. The operation of the system is automatic and no human supervision is required during the testing stage. Ceramic capacitors were tested at high voltage in long duration tests. The obtained results indicated that the charge content of partial discharges shift towards high levels of charge as the level of deterioration in the capacitor increases.
