Tube-in-tube ionic liquid heat exchanger employing a selectively permeable tube

A tube-in-tube heat exchanger utilizes a selectively permeable tube having a selective permeable layer to allow the refrigerant to transfer into an ionic liquid to generate heating or cooling. The ionic liquid then provides heating or cooling to a heat transfer fluid through a non-permeable layer or tube. The system may be configured as a shell and tube design, with the third fluid free to flow on the outside of the shell, or as a shell and tube-in-tube, with a central tube containing a first liquid, a second tube containing a second liquid, and an outer shell containing the third liquid. The selectively permeable tube may include an anion or cation selectively permeable layer and this layer may be supported by a support layer or tube.

Modeling and Experiments on a Dedicated Outdoor Air System Using Liquid Desiccant Heat and Mass Exchangers

Liquid desiccants can provide efficient dehumidification but have yet to see widespread adoption. Most systems studied previously use natural gas-combustion to heat and regenerate the desiccant, and a central chiller plant or cooling tower for removing the heat of absorption. Here we present modeling and experimental results on a novel packaged air conditioner integrating liquid-desiccant heat and mass exchangers with a vapor compression cycle. The packaged system does not need cold or hot water from a central plant or cooling tower and is suitable for rooftop unit air conditioners. The system uses the evaporator to cool the liquid desiccant that is absorbing moisture from the air, and the condenser to heat the liquid desiccant to regenerate it. Efficiency is improved by reducing the load on the evaporator for a given supply-air dewpoint. This paper presents the measured dehumidification efficiency for a 10- ton packaged air conditioner, focusing on dehumidifying ventilation air. The paper also presents a numerical model to predict the outlet conditions and dehumidification efficiency, which we compare with the measured data.

Modeling a Water-Cooled Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger Condensing CO2 for use in SCO2 Cycle System Optimization Studies

This work describes a one-dimensional model of a water-cooled printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) condensing supercritical CO2. The model is developed for use in cycle optimization studies (e.g., minimizing levelized cost of electricity) as either the main heat rejection cooler and/or a compressor intercooler for recompression closed Brayton supercritical CO2 power cycles. Sensitivity and case studies are used to illustrate the impact of important model parameters, and this includes allowing for independent variation of zig-zag channel wave angles on the CO2 and water side. Results show that for a given CO2 design pressure (and thus saturation temperature), the PCHE design inlet water temperature has a significant impact on the PCHE size. Results also demonstrate that if wave angles are the same on the CO2 and water side, the water side pressure drop will have more influence on determining the optimum PCHE mass than the CO2 side pressure drop. Reducing the water side wave angle to near straight channel flow offers a more compact design for a similar water side pressure drop (and pump power requirement). Cases are also shown for further increasing the compactness and how the PCHE mass is affected along with water pump power.

Proton exchange membrane material and methods of making the same

Hydrocarbon proton exchange membranes are disclosed that are composed of a material including a hydrophobic main chain, and acidic side chains. The main chain includes a polyaryl structure that is substantially free of ether linkages and also includes a fluoromethyl substituted carbon. The acidic side chains include a hydrocarbon tether terminated by a strongly acidic group, such as a fluoroalkyl sulfonate group. Chemical stability of the material is increased by removing the ether linkages from the main chain. The hydrophobic main chain and substantially hydrophilic side chains create a phase-separated morphology that affords enhanced transport of protons and water across the membrane even at low relative humidity levels. These materials are advantageous as membranes for use in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, water hydrolysis systems, sensors, electrochemical hydrogen compressors, actuators, water purifiers, gas separators, etc.

Experience with Inner Reflector Plug exchange in SNS

The Inner Reflector Plug (IRP) is a central component of the Spallation Neutron Source target monolith, which houses the mercury target and four liter-sized neutron moderator units. It is exposed to high-level radiation fields during routine operation and builds up significant activity. The IRP needs to be replaced due to moderator neutron poison and decoupler burn-out, which is used for shaping neutron pulses. The first IRP exchange took place in March 2018. The old IRP was extracted from the target monolith, providing space for the new one. It was split into three segments, each of which was handled separately. The lowest section of the IRP is the largest segment in size and in activity and is temporarily stored on-site for cool down before conduction post irradiation examination. In support of planning the replacement activities, a wide range of activation and transport analyses were performed. This included calculating isotope inventories and the radiation fields for each segment as it is extracted in storage casks, and the radiation field from the empty IRP pit in the target monolith. While the replacement was taking place, measurements were performed and later on compared to the calculations. During these studies, it was discovered that a significant contributor to the radiation field from the lower IRP segment is from photo-neutrons. Photo-nuclear physics was added to the analyses and calculated results compared well with measured dose rates.

Measurement of the pion charge exchange differential cross section on Argon with the ProtoDUNE-SP detector

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) utilizes Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) technology in its pursuit of uncovering the origins of matter. As a crucial prototype for the DUNE far detector (FD) module, ProtoDUNE-SP at CERN Neutrino Platform Facility employs a hadron test beam with a momentum range of 0.3 to 7 GeV/c to study the detector response to particles that could be produced in the neutrino interactions at the DUNE FD. Furthermore, ProtoDUNE-SP is dedicated to testing event reconstruction and performing detector calibration under controlled conditions. Neutral pion reconstruction performance is an important benchmark of the calorimetric and tracking capability of LArTPC, and understanding neutral pion in LArTPC is crucial to characterize backgrounds to oscillation measurements and rare searches. To improve neutral pion reconstruction in LArTPC, a kinematic fitting algorithm is developed, achieving a 12% resolution in neutral pion energy in ProtoDUNE-SP. This enhancement enables the first measurements of the pion-argon charge exchange differential cross-section. By comparing these results with the current model, valuable constraints can be made to improve generator simulations in the future DUNE experiment.

Development & Experimental Validation of a Generalized Resistance-Capacitance Model for Numerical Simulation of Phase-Change Material Embedded Heat Exchangers

Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) using phase change material (PCM) has attracted increased attention as a viable solution for overcoming the mismatch between energy supply and demand for renewable energy-based systems. PCM-embedded heat exchangers (PCM-HX) have the potential to significantly improve thermal performance due to high storage capacity and low temperature variation during the phase change process. Most models for simulating LHTES heat transfer use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, which have high computational costs resulting from considering the complex and time-dependent physics relevant to PCM-HXs. In this paper, a Generalized Resistance Capacitance-based Model (GRCM) was developed to predict the thermal performance of arbitrary PCM-HXs in a computationally efficient manner without compromising modeling accuracy. The GRCM is exercised for three case studies: (i) verification for a single-slabbed finned PCM-HX, (ii) verification and validation for a copper foam/paraffin composite PCM-HX, and (iii) validation for a straight tube annular finned PCM-HX. The copper foam PCM-HX uses an electric heater at the top of HX, while the other two configurations utilize water as heat transfer fluid. For the single-slabbed finned PCM-HX melting case, the mean deviation in average PCM temperature predicted by the GRCM compared to the CFD model was between 0.56 – 0.73 K, with maximum temperature deviation of 2.68 K. For the HTF outlet temperature, the validation results showed that GRCM prediction matches very well with experimental data, with mean temperature deviation of 0.24 K during melting case, while for solidification case was 0.34 K. These results showcase the GRCM’s capability for accurately reproducing the thermal characteristics of PCM-HXs with considerably lower computational effort.
