Heat-transfer and surface-pressure measurements for the SSME fuel-side turbopump turbine

Detailed heat flux and surface pressure distribution on the first-stage vane and blade of the Space Shuttle Main Engine fuel side turbopump turbine are examined. The specific turbine being utilized for the study is a combination of actual engine hardware and reproduced hardware consistent with that being used at NASA-Marshall for the initial measurements in their newly constructed blow-down turbine test facility. The facility is of the short duration shock tunnel variety, which permits use of thin film thermometers which are used to measure the surface temperature histories at prescribed locations on the turbine component parts. Heat flux values are then inferred from the temperature histories using standard data reduction procedures. The measurement program is described in detail.

Subcooled freon-11 flow boiling in top-heated finned coolant channels with and without a twisted tape

An experimental study was conducted in top-heated finned horizontal tubes to study the effect of enhancement devices on flow boiling heat transfer in coolant channels. The objectives are to examine the variations in both the mean and local (axial and circumferential) heat transfer coefficients for circular coolant channels with spiral finned walls and/or spiral fins with a twisted tape, and improve the data reduction technique of a previous investigator. The working fluid is freon-11 with an inlet temperature of 22.2 C (approximately 21 C subcooling). The coolant channel's exit pressure and mass velocity are 0.19 M Pa (absolute) and 0.21 Mg/sq. ms, respectively. Two tube configurations were examined; i.e., tubes had either 6.52 (small pitch) or 4.0 (large pitch) fins/cm of the circumferential length (26 and 16 fins, respectively). The large pitch fins were also examined with a twisted tape insert. The inside nominal diameter of the copper channels at the root of the fins was 1.0 cm. The results show that by adding enhancement devices, boiling occurs almost simultaneously at all axial locations. The case of spiral fins with large pitch resulted in larger mean (circumferentially averaged) heat transfer coefficients, h sub m, at all axial locations. Finally, when twisted tape is added to the tube with large-pitched fins, the power required for the onset of boiling is reduced at all axial and circumferential locations.

Preliminary flight-determined subsonic lift and drag characteristics of the X-29A forward-swept-wing airplane

The X-29A subsonic lift and drag characteristics determined, met, or exceeded predictions, particularly with respect to the drag polar shapes. Induced drag levels were as great as 20 percent less than wind tunnel estimates, particularly at coefficients of lift above 0.8. Drag polar shape comparisons with other modern fighter aircraft showed the X-29A to have a better overall aircraft aerodynamic Oswald efficiency factor for the same aspect ratio. Two significant problems arose in the data reduction and analysis process. These included uncertainties in angle of attack upwash calibration and effects of maneuver dynamics on drag levels. The latter problem resulted from significantly improper control surface automatic camber control scheduling. Supersonic drag polar results were not obtained during this phase because of a lack of engine instrumentation to measure afterburner fuel flow.

Observations of surface-brightness fluctuations in Virgo

VRI photometric observations of surface-brightness fluctuation in 13 Virgo Cluster galaxies, M32, and NGC 3379, obtained using an 800 x 800 CCD array on the 4-m telescope at KPNO during March 1989, are reported. The data-reduction techniques are described in detail, and the results are presented in tables and graphs. Particular attention is given to distance estimates derived from the I-band fluctuations: it is shown that NGC 4365 is behind the cluster, while NGC 4468 and NGC 4489 are in the foreground. The average distance to the cluster is found to be 17 + or - 1 Mpc, with H0 = 78 + or - 6 km/sec Mpc; the corresponding values from a direct isochrone calibration are 21 Mpc and 64 + or - 5 km/sec Mpc.

Wide-angle astrometry with the Mark III stellar interferometer

Astrometric measurements made with the Mark III stellar interferometer on five nights in August-September 1988 yielded average formal 1-sigma errors for 12 FK5 stars of 6 mas in declination and 10 mas in right ascension. This improvement in precision over previously reported measurements with this instrument made in 1986 is attributable to several factors: a second 12 m baseline; oriented E-S, was added to the instrument to improve the determination of right ascension; two-color analysis was included in the data-reduction process, along with a new central-fringe identification algorithm using three spectral channels, in order to reduce atmospheric errors; thermal control was greatly improved; and changes were made to observational procedures and hardware to monitor variations in the delay offset due to residual thermal drifts. Approximately half of the new positions are within 50 mas of their FK5 positions. However, an extended series of measurements are needed to ascertain the accuracy that can be achieved by interferometry.

Measurement of surface microtopography using helicopter-mounted stereo film cameras and two stereo matching techniques

A common problem in acquiring ground-truth data for use in microwave interaction modeling is the capture of surface roughness data that are both sampled at distances comparable to a fraction of the wavelength and extensive enough to represent the surface statistics in at least one resolution cell of the microwave remote sensor used. A technique has been developed for acquiring the necessary photogrammetric data using twin 70-mm film cameras mounted on a helicopter boom. The apparatus is described, and the accuracy with which ground surface roughness can be characterized using this device is estimated. Both standard and cross-correlation methods were used for data reduction. Stereogrammetry is compared with a completely automated image-matching technique. Dense disparity images were generated from the helicopter stereo pairs. Using interior orientation parameters supplied by the camera manufacturers, and assuming that exterior orientation parameters remain constant between control target and test field photography, an extremely dense DEM (digital elevation model) for a test field has been derived. Results are compared, and accuracy estimates are presented.

Scattered light in the echelle modes of the Goddard high-resolution spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. I - Analysis of prelaunch calibration data

A study of scattered light in the echelle mode of the Goddard high-resolution spectrograph (GHRS), one of the first-generation science instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, is reported. The data analyzed are from the GHRS ground-based test program and include observations with the 500 channel Digicon detectors through the small science aperture of UV emission-line sources, continuum sources, and continuum sources viewed through molecular absorption cells. The two largest contributors to scattered light are the echelle and cross-disperser, the effects of which have been quantified. A computer simulation using the derived scattering functions demonstrates that the combined effects of these sources of scattered light adequately explain the observed level of interorder light when viewing UV continuum sources. Observing strategies and data reduction algorithms for measuring and removing the effects of the scattered light are discussed.

Instrumentation systems for the Langley Research Center 8-foot high temperature tunnel

A description is presented of the 8-foot high-temperature tunnel, a Mach 7 blowdown-type facility in which methane is burned in air under pressure, with the resulting combustion products utilized as the test medium. The instrumentation environment and requirements are identified, and instrumentation design, including wiring, sensors, and data acquisition system are described. The design and installation of a fast oxygen monitoring system to maintain the partial pressure of oxygen at 21 percent in the tunnel test section is included. Also, the new data acquisition system hardware details and data-reduction capabilities are defined.

Signal-to-noise considerations for sky-subtracted CCD data

The standard equation for calculating the uncertainty of photometry obtained from CCDs does not correctly consider the random errors, or 'noise', introduced into observations by procedures used in reducing the data. This paper presents a thorough derivation of the theoretical error equation that considers the contributions from all internal noise sources in the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of a sky-subtracted image. A simplified version used for estimating the internal errors from empirical data is also derived. The propagation of noise through the data-reduction process is illustrated through a series of equations for the change in S/N that results from a variety of different operations performed on a CCD frame. Comparing these effects with the results expected for an observation made with an ideal detector suggests a number of ways to improve the precision of photometry through the practices employed in obtaining and reducing the observations.

An ultraviolet spectral atlas of a sunspot and an active region 1190-1730 A

An ultraviolet spectral atlas of a sunspot with high spectral and spatial resolution in the wavelength region 1190-1730 A is presented. The atlas contains spectra of three different areas in the sunspot and also of an active region and a quiet region. The selected areas are averaged over several arcsec, ranging from 3.5 arcsec in the sunspot to 18 arcsec in the quiet region. Brief descriptions of the data reduction and calibration procedures are given. The absolute intensities are determined with an accuracy of + or - 30 percent and the wavelength scale is accurate to better than 0.01 A. The transition region lines show the most extreme example known of downflowing gas above a sunspot, a phenomenon which seems to be commonly connected to sunspots.

The Solar Oscillations Investigation-Michelson Doppler Imager for SOHO

The Solar Oscillations Investigation-Michelson Doppler Imager (SOI-MDI) for the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) mission is intended to investigate the solar interior using helioseismology techniques. The SOI program consists of a coordinated set of observations intended to address a set of science objectives, an MDI instrument, and a facility that will provide data reduction and analysis capability. The MDI instrument will take filtergrams to measure LOS velocity, line and continuum intensity, and LOS magnetic fields with both 4 and 1.2 arcsec resolution, The SOI study is designed to take advantage of the anticipated SOHO telemetry by organizining the observations into four programs: structure (at all times), dynamics (two months per year), campaign (eight hours per day, 10 months per year), and magnetic field (a few minutes per day).

Astrometry using the Hubble Space Telescope fine guidance sensors

Plans for the use of the three fine guidance sensors (FGSs) of the NASA Hubble Space Telescope for direct astrometric observations are reviewed. Topics addressed include the optical elements and detectors of the FGSs, the basic and astrometric operating modes of the FGSs, spacecraft pointing control during astrometric observations, and the astrometric data-reduction software provided to HST users. Particular attention is given to the calibration procedures for optical-field angle distortion, the plate scale, filter-wedge errors, lateral color effects, secular changes, velocity aberration, and transfer function. Also discussed are the steps being taken to verify the HST orbit. It is pointed out that the performance of the interferometric FGSs should not be affected by the focusing problems of the main HST instrument.

Measurement of surface microtopography

Acquisition of ground truth data for use in microwave interaction modeling requires measurement of surface roughness sampled at intervals comparable to a fraction of the microwave wavelength and extensive enough to adequately represent the statistics of a surface unit. Sub-centimetric measurement accuracy is thus required over large areas, and existing techniques are usually inadequate. A technique is discussed for acquiring the necessary photogrammetric data using twin film cameras mounted on a helicopter. In an attempt to eliminate tedious data reduction, an automated technique was applied to the helicopter photographs, and results were compared to those produced by conventional stereogrammetry. Derived root-mean-square (RMS) roughness for the same stereo-pair was 7.5 cm for the automated technique versus 6.5 cm for the manual method. The principal source of error is probably due to vegetation in the scene, which affects the automated technique but is ignored by a human operator.

Fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced glass ceramic and ceramic matrix composites

A fracture mechanics investigation of 2D woven Nicalon SiC/SiC and Nicalon SiC/LAS has been undertaken. An energy approach has been adopted to characterize and quantify the fracture properties of these materials. Chevron-notched bend specimens were tested in an edgewise configuration in which the crack propagated perpendicular to the ply direction. R-curves were obtained from repeated loading and unloading of specimens using several methods of data reduction. Values correconding to the plateau regions of the R-curves were taken as steady-state crack-growth resistance. These ranged from 37 to 63 kJ/sq m for 2D-SiC/LAS and 2.6 to 2.8 kJ/sq m for 2D-SiC/SiC composites.
