Application of redundancy in the Saturn 5 guidance and control system

The Saturn launch vehicle's guidance and control system is so complex that the reliability of a simplex system is not adequate to fulfill mission requirements. Thus, to achieve the desired reliability, redundancy encompassing a wide range of types and levels was employed. At one extreme, the lowest level, basic components (resistors, capacitors, relays, etc.) are employed in series, parallel, or quadruplex arrangements to insure continued system operation in the presence of possible failure conditions. At the other extreme, the highest level, complete subsystem duplication is provided so that a backup subsystem can be employed in case the primary system malfunctions. In between these two extremes, many other redundancy schemes and techniques are employed at various levels. Basic redundancy concepts are covered to gain insight into the advantages obtained with various techniques. Points and methods of application of these techniques are included. The theoretical gain in reliability resulting from redundancy is assessed and compared to a simplex system. Problems and limitations encountered in the practical application of redundancy are discussed as well as techniques verifying proper operation of the redundant channels. As background for the redundancy application discussion, a basic description of the guidance and control system is included.

Reduced hydrogen permeability at high temperatures

CO and CO2 reduce hydrogen loss through iron, nickel, and cobalt based alloy tubes. Method is based on concept that oxide film on metal surface reduces hydrogen permeability through metal; adding CO or CO2 forms oxide films continuously during operation, and hydrogen containment is improved. Innovation enhances prospects for Stirling engine system utilization.

Determination of physical and chemical states of lubricants in concentrated contacts, part 2

Infrared emission spectroscopy through a window in an operating bearing continued to provide most of the information gathered on the state of lubricants subjected to elastohydrodynamic (EHD) conditions. Other measurements were traction, scanning electron microscopy and elemental surface analysis X-rays. A very significant finding was the decomposition of a naphthenic oil lubricant in the presence of small concentrations of an organic chloride. Olefins and aromatics were formed in ever increasing amounts prior to total lubricant failure. An aromatic fluid also failed in the presence of chloride. A correlation was found between changes of the alignment of lubricant molecules evidence by infrared polarization and changes of traction under varying EHD stresses.

The P-POD Project

The programmable pilot oriented display (P-POD), a multiprocessor based flight information processing and display unit, is discussed. Communication protocols between the three Z-80 processors inside P-POD are reviewed. The interface between the video processor, P2, and the main processor, P1, was tested. Hardware and software were revised. Data flow between P1 and P2 is illustrated. While running diagnostic routines to exercise the P1/P2 interface at maximum speed an intermittent failure was observed. A check of possible noise sources or race conditions in the hardware did not reveal the source of this failure. Possible software timing problems were also fully investigated. To eliminate the effects of this type of failure a performance monitor routine was used to detect these occasional failures and correct them. The data transmission cycle between P1/P2 is either allowed to continue normal operation or is re-initialized and restarted when an error is detected.

Development and integration of the infrared telescope for Spacelab

A description is given of the design features of the Small Helium-Cooled Infrared Telescope (IRT) being developed for the 1983 Spacelab 2 mission and the problems encountered during the development of its (1) superfluid helium system requirements, (2) interfaces with Spacelab, and (3) Kennedy Space Center prelaunch operations requirements and restrictions. The IRT comprises cryogenic, IR optical, mechanical, and electronics subsystems. Attention is given the preflight management of superfluid helium by a vacuum maintenance assembly (VMA), which will operate almost continuously until launch and then be deactivated to fly as unavoidable ballast. The objective of IRT design and development is the meeting of IR science and engineering objectives with a relatively low-cost system.

Plume/flowfield jet interaction effects on the Space Shuttle Orbiter during entry

A comparison of wind tunnel test results with actual flight test data from the performance of the Orbiter Reaction Control System during the STS-1 and -2 flights is presented. Jet interaction phenomena were modeled analytically and a decision was made to develop a jet interaction scaling parameter from empirical measurements wherever possible. A number of different scaling parameters resulted, and errors bounds were determined for tunnel-to-tunnel differences, model to tunnel differences, balance accuracy, real gas effects, varying nozzle configurations, and angle of sideslip. Flight test data has concentrated on the lateral/directional jet interaction of the aft yaw jets, which operate almost continuously from entry down to Mach 1 conditions. A discussion of rolling moments, side forces, and results of usage of the aft pitch and roll jets indicates an underprediction of the side force and yawing moment and overprediction of pitch and roll jet effects.

Magnetoplasmadynamic thruster development

Current research on self-field MPD thrusters presents the possibility of developing high power/low cost electric propulsion. The interest generated in this propulsion concept within both NASA and the U.S. Air Force has led to a coordinated interagency effort, and the recent completion of several test sites are expected to speed thruster concept development. Efficiencies approaching 40% at 2200 sec have been experimentally demonstrated. Among the characteristics recommending development of MPD thrusters are high thrust density and power handling capability, simplicity, and a wide dynamic range of thrust and specific impulse. MPD thrusters can, moreover, operate either continuously, at high available power levels, or in a pulsed mode, to match lower power levels.

Meteorological and dynamical requirements for MST radar networks: Waves

Studies of wave motions using the MST radar have concentrated on single station time series analyses of gravity waves and tides. Since these radars collect high time resolution data they have the potential to become a significant tool for mesoscale research. In addition, radars are operated almost continuously unattended and, consequently, data sets are available for analyzing longer period wave motions such as tides and planetary scale waves. Although there is much to learn from single station data, the possibilities of new knowledge from a network of radars is exciting. The scales of wave motions in the atmosphere cover a broad range. Consequently the choice of a radar network depends to a large extent on the types of wave motions that are studied. There are many outstanding research problems that would benefit from observations from a MST radar network. In particular, there is a strong need for measurements of gravity wave parameters and equatorial wave motions. Some of the current problems in wave dynamics are discussed.

Long range coherence in free electron lasers

The simple free electron laser (FEL) design uses a static, periodic, transverse magnetic field to undulate relativistic electrons traveling along its axis. This allows coupling to a co-propagating optical wave and results in bunching to produce coherent radiation. The advantages of the FEL are continuous tunability, operation at wavelengths ranging from centimeters to angstroms, and high efficiency resulting from the fact that the interaction region only contains light, relativistic electrons, and a magnetic field. Theoretical concepts and operational principles are discussed.

Failure Modes Experienced on Spacecraft Nicd Batteries

A review was made of failures and irregularities experienced on nickel cadmium batteries for 31 spacecraft. Only rarely did batteries fail completely. In many cases, poorly performing batteries were compensated for by a reduction in loads or by continuing to operate in spite of out-of-voltage conditions. Low discharge voltage was the most common problem observed in flight spacecraft (42%). Spacecraft batteries are often designed to protect against cell shorts, but cell shorts accounted for only 16% of the failures. Other causes of problems were high charge voltage (16%), battery problems caused by other elements of the spacecraft (10%), and open circuit failures (6%). Problems of miscellaneous or unknown causes occurred in 10% of the cases.

Cloud observations with Nimbus-7 satellite data

A Nimbus-7 Cloud Data Processing Team was established in 1982 in order to implement cloud-related studies for as long as the spacecraft's Temperature Humidity IR radiometer and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer continue to operate. It will soon be possible to correlate the Nimbus-7 cloud cover information with International Satellite Cloud Climatology results. The production of validated Nimbus-7 cloud products was scheduled to begin in November, 1983; each year of Nimbus-7 cloud data should take about four months to produce.

Development of seeding techniques for small supersonic wind tunnel

The NASA Lewis 1x1 foot supersonic wind tunnel is used to experimentally verify computational methods. This tunnel, which is continuous running, operates from laboratory-wide high pressure air and vacuum systems. As such, the air does not recirculate but makes a single pass through the tunnel. The Mach number is varied with interchangeable nozzle blocks and has a range from Mach 1.6 to 4.0. Dry and filtered air is available up to pressures of 3 atmospheres. The air enters the tunnel system through a plenum having flow straighteners and 6 fine mesh screens. The exit of the plenum provides smooth contraction with an area ratio of approximately 20 that, along with the screens, provides a uniform flow for the nozzle.

Mesospheric winds observed by the Kyoto meteor radar

The Kyoto meteor radar has been operated almost continuously from May 1983. By using a large amount of radar data, seasonal variations of mean winds, planetary waves and atmospheric tides can be delinated. Seasonal and latitudinal variation of tidally corrected mean winds including Kyoto observations have been examined in comparison with the CIRA 1972 model. A power spectral density of the zonal wind field for 60 days of data is formed from an autocorrelation function with a maximum time lag of 30 days. A quasi-2-day oscillation was evident in the period from June to September, and seems to be repeated in 1983 and 1983. It had large amplitudes in June and July and became weak in August; then it was again amplified in September. In summer months, the period of the wave was indicated as 2.2 days, and it became shorter in September. At Kyoto (35 deg N), the diurnal tide is the main component of atmospheric tides. The monthly mean amplitude of the eastward component of diurnal tide is plotted for the period from May 1983 to September 1984. It was clearly amplified in summer months at around 92 to 96 km altitudes. This feature was repeated in two successive years except for the maximum amplitude which exceeded 40 m/sec and 30 m/sec in 1983 and 1984, respectively.
