Resonant Metasurfaces with Van Der Waals Hyperbolic Nanoantennas and Extreme Light Confinement

This work reports on a metasurface based on optical nanoantennas made of van der Waals material hexagonal boron nitride. The optical nanoantenna made of hyperbolic material was shown to support strong localized resonant modes stemming from the propagating high-k waves in the hyperbolic material. An analytical approach was used to determine the mode profile and type of cuboid nanoantenna resonances. An electric quadrupolar mode was demonstrated to be associated with a resonant magnetic response of the nanoantenna, which resembles the induction of resonant magnetic modes in high-refractive-index nanoantennas. The analytical model accurately predicts the modes of cuboid nanoantennas due to the strong boundary reflections of the high-k waves, a capability that does not extend to plasmonic or high-refractive-index nanoantennas, where the imperfect reflection and leakage of the mode from the cavity complicate the analysis. In the reported metasurface, excitations of the multipolar resonant modes are accompanied by directional scattering and a decrease in the metasurface reflectance to zero, which is manifested as the resonant Kerker effect. Van der Waals nanoantennas are envisioned to support localized resonances and can become an important functional element of metasurfaces and transdimensional photonic components. By designing efficient subwavelength scatterers with high-quality-factor resonances, this work demonstrates that this type of nanoantenna made of naturally occurring hyperbolic material is a viable substitute for plasmonic and all-dielectric nanoantennas in developing ultra-compact photonic components.

Light Confinement in Twisted Single-Layer 2D+ Moiré Photonic Crystals and Bilayer Moiré Photonic Crystals

Twisted photonic crystals are photonic analogs of twisted monolayer materials such as graphene and their optical property studies are still in their infancy. This paper reports optical properties of twisted single-layer 2D+ moiré photonic crystals where there is a weak modulation in z direction, and bilayer moiré-overlapping-moiré photonic crystals. In weak-coupling bilayer moiré-overlapping-moiré photonic crystals, the light source is less localized with an increasing twist angle, similar to the results reported by the Harvard research group in References 37 and 38 on twisted bilayer photonic crystals, although there is a gradient pattern in the former case. In a strong-coupling case, however, the light source is tightly localized in AA-stacked region in bilayer PhCs with a large twist angle. For single-layer 2D+ moiré photonic crystals, the light source in Ex polarization can be localized and forms resonance modes when the single-layer 2D+ moiré photonic crystal is integrated on a glass substrate. This study leads to a potential application of 2D+ moiré photonic crystal in future on-chip optoelectronic integration.

Dimensionless Parameter Scaling of Intrinsic Torque in C-Mod Enhanced Confinement Plasmas

A dimensionless parameter dependence study of intrinsic torque has been performed on a database of H- and I-mode plasmas from the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. The torque was determined by comparing intrinsic angular momentum density profiles just before and just after L-H and L-I transitions. The intrinsic torque has been found to scale as beta_N^1.5 rho_*^-1.0 nu_$^0.1, with the parameter ranges 0.3 < beta_N <1.5, 0.004 < rho_* < 0.011 and 0.04 < nu_* < 0.9. Comparison with results from other tokamaks suggests that the intrinsic torque should be normalized by some measure of the device size.

Direct Measurements of DT Fuel Preheat from Hot Electrons in Direct-Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion

Hot electrons generated by laser-plasma instabilities degrade the performance of laser-fusion implosions by preheating the DT fuel and reducing core compression. The hot-electron energy deposition in the DT fuel has been directly measured for the first time by comparing the hard x-ray signals between DT-layered and mass-equivalent ablator-only implosions. The electron energy deposition profile in the fuel is inferred through dedicated experiments using Cu-doped payloads of varying thickness. The measured preheat energy accurately explains the areal-density degradation observed in many OMEGA implosions. This technique can be used to assess the viability of the direct-drive approach to laser fusion with respect to the scaling of hot-electron preheat with laser energy.

On the very high energy confinement observed in super H-mode DIII-D experiments

Analysis of recent super H-mode experiments on DIII-D shows that high rotation, not high pedestal, plays the essential role in achieving very high confinement H98y2 > 1.5. Very high confinement is reached early on in the H-mode phase of these discharges, when the pedestal is still very low, but after the toroidal rotation has already built-up to very high levels in the core. As the discharge evolves, the rotation drops, and so does the energy confinement, despite a sustained very high pressure pedestal. During this evolution, the confinement quality is linearly correlated with the core toroidal rotation, which varies according to different levels of injected neutral beam torque per particle. Core transport modeling shows that the contribution from rotation in the E×B shear is responsible for confinement quality significantly in excess of standard H-mode (H98y2 ∼ 1).
