In Situ Formation of Li 3 P Layer Enables Fast Li + Conduction across Li/Solid Polymer Electrolyte Interface

Abstract Solid‐state polymer electrolytes provide better flexibility and electrode contact than their ceramic counterparts, making them a worthwhile pursuit for all‐solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries. However, their large Li/solid state electrolyte interfacial resistance, small critical current density, and rapid lithium dendrite growth during cycling still limit their viability. Owing to these restrictions, all‐solid‐state cells with solid polymer electrolytes must be cycled above room‐temperature and with a small current density. These problems can be mitigated with an in situ formed artificial solid electrolyte interphase that rapidly conducts Li + ions. Herein, a Li 3 P layer formed in situ at the Li‐metal/solid polymer electrolyte interphase is reported that significantly reduces the electrode/electrolyte interfacial resistance. Additionally, this layer increases the wettability of the solid polymer by the metallic lithium anode, allowing for the critical current density of lithium symmetric cells to be doubled by homogenizing the current density at the interface. All‐solid‐state Li/Li symmetric cells and Li/LiFePO 4 cells with the Li 3 P layer show improved cycling performance with a high current density.

Ultra-Stretchable, Ionic Conducting, Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive with Dual Role for Stable Li-Metal Batteries

The practical application of lithium (Li) metal battery is impeded by the Li dendrite growth and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Herein, an ultra-stretchable and ionic conducting chemically crosslinked pressure-sensitive adhesive (cPSA) synthesized via the copolymerization of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid with poly(ethyleneglycol)dimethacrylate as crosslinker (short for 70cPSA), is developed as both artificial SEI layer and solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) for stable Li-metal electrode, enabling all-solid-state Li metal batteries with excellent cycling performance. As an artificial SEI layer, the 70cPSA-modified electrodes exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in Li|70cPSA@Cu half cells and 70cPSA@Li|70cPSA@Li symmetric cells. In full cells with LiFePO 4 (LFP) as cathode, the 70cPSA@Li|LFP cell exhibits stable cycling performance over 250 cycles. Utilized as SPE, the all-solid-state Li|SPE|LFP cell delivers excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 86% over 500 cycles. With high-voltage LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) as cathode, the Li|SPE|NMC811 cell exhibits a discharge capacity of 124.3 mAh g -1 with a capacity retention of 71% after 200 cycles. Furthermore, the rational design of PSAs and investigation of their dual role for stable and safe Li-metal batteries may shed a light on adhesive polymers for battery applications.

Formation and Shape Changing of Conductive Helical Ribbons via Deposition of Highly Stressed Films on Mechanically Responsive Substrates

Abstract This work demonstrates that the electrodeposition of highly stressed films on compliant ribbons is a robust process to obtain helical structures with excellent mechanical stability and potentially high thermal and electrical conductance. Electrodeposition on end‐tethered ribbons alters their axial and bending stiffness while imparting mechanical stress to drive the formation of a helix with a microscale diameter and pitch in a controlled and scalable manner. The process generates helices with diameters and pitches between 80 and 200 µm and lengths as large as several millimeters. The approach is amenable to parallel processing a large number of 3D structures on any substrate, including large‐area semiconductor wafers. This phenomenon is explained in terms of the change of stress gradients as material is added. Applications of the fabricated helices include antennas, metamaterials, and slow‐wave structures in frequency ranges not previously attainable.

Phase Transformation Contributions to Heat Capacity and Impact on Thermal Diffusivity, Thermal Conductivity, and Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract The accurate characterization of thermal conductivity κ, particularly at high temperature, is of paramount importance to many materials, thermoelectrics in particular. The ease and access of thermal diffusivity D measurements allows for the calculation of κ when the volumetric heat capacity, ρc p , of the material is known. However, in the relation κ = ρc p D , there is some confusion as to what value of c p should be used in materials undergoing phase transformations. Herein, it is demonstrated that the Dulong–Petit estimate of c p at high temperature is not appropriate for materials having phase transformations with kinetic timescales relevant to thermal transport. In these materials, there is an additional capacity to store heat in the material through the enthalpy of transformation Δ H . This can be described using a generalized model for the total heat capacity for a material where φ is an order parameter that describes how much latent heat responds “instantly” to temperature changes. Here, C pφ is the intrinsic heat capacity (e.g., approximately the Dulong–Petit heat capacity at high temperature). It is shown experimentally in Zn 4 Sb 3 that the decrease in D through the phase transition at 250 K is fully accounted for by the increase in c p , while κ changes smoothly through the phase transition. Consequently, reports of κ dropping near phase transitions in widely studied materials such as PbTe and SnSe have likely overlooked the effects of excess heat capacity and overestimated the thermoelectric efficiency, zT .

Engineering Functionalized 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks Nanosheets with Fast Li + Conduction for Advanced Solid Li Batteries

Solid-state batteries can ensure high energy density and safety in lithium metal batteries, while polymer electrolytes are plagued by slow ion kinetics and low selective transport of Li + . Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are proposed as emerging fillers for solid-state poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) electrolytes, however, developing functionalized MOFs and understanding their roles on ion transfer has proven challenging. Herein, combining computational and experimental results, the functional group regulation in MOFs can effectively change surficial charge distribution and limit anion movement is revealed, providing a potential solution to these issues. Specifically, functionalized 2D MOF sheets are designed through molecular engineering to construct high-performance composite electrolytes, where the electron-donating effect of substituents in 2D-MOFs effectively limits the movement of ClO 4 - and promotes mechanical properties and ion migration numbers (0.36 up to 0.64) of PEO. As a result, Li/Li cells with composite electrolyte exhibit superior cyclability for 1000 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm -2 . Meanwhile, the solid LiFePO 4 /Li battery delivers highly reversible capacities of 148.8 mAh g -1 after 200 cycles. In conclusion, these findings highlight a new approach for anion confinement through the use of functional group electronic effects, leading to enhanced ionic conductivity, and a feasible direction for high-performance solid-state batteries.

High‐Order Nonlinear Frequency Conversion in Transparent Conducting Oxide Thin Films

The study of conductive oxides has gained momentum within the photonics community due to their unique linear and nonlinear optical properties. Despite recent experiments reporting on high harmonic generation from thin films, the optical/electronic behavior of these compounds at the nanoscale is still not fully understood due to the lack of a suitable theoretical model. In the present work, aluminum zinc oxide is excited near its epsilon-near-zero crossing point using incident femtosecond pulses having peak power densities in the 1 TW cm −2 range. A relatively efficient frequency up-conversion including even and odd harmonics up to the seventh order is observed. A hydrodynamic-Maxwell theoretical approach is adopted, capable of simultaneously taking into account linear and nonlinear dispersions, nonlocal effects, surface, magnetic, and bulk nonlinearities in a spectral region that spans over two and a half octaves from the UV to the NIR region. The study enables a deeper understanding of the fundamental material parameters regulating optical nonlinearities, providing important insights to engineer this class of materials for applications in sensing, ultra-fast physics, and spectroscopy.

Ion Conducting Polymer Interfaces for Lithium Metal Anodes: Impact on the Electrodeposition Kinetics

Electrochemical cells that utilize metals (e.g., lithium, sodium, zinc) as anodes are under intense investigation as they are projected to replace the current lithium-ion batteries to serve as a more energy-dense option for commercial applications. In addition, metal electrodes provide opportunities for fundamental research of different phenomena, such as ion transport and electrochemical kinetics, in the complex environment of reactive metal-electrodeposition. In this work, computationally and experimentally the competing effects related to transport and kinetics during the metal electrodeposition process are examined. Using Brownian dynamics simulations, it is shown that slower deposition kinetics results in a more compact and uniform Li morphology. This finding is experimentally implemented by designing ion-containing polymeric coatings on the electrodes that simultaneously provide pathways for lithium-ion transport, while impeding the charge transfer (Li + + e - → Li) at heterogeneous surfaces. It is further shown that these ionic polymer interfaces can significantly extend the cell-lifetime of a lithium metal battery in both ether-based and carbonate-based electrolytes. Through theoretical and experimental investigations, it is found that a low kinetic to transport rate ratio is a major factor in influencing the Li plating morphology. The plating morphology can be further fine-tuned by increasing ionic conductivity.

Structural Tuning of Self‐Conductive Polymer as Gas Diffusion Layer for Electrocatalytic Reactions at High Current

Electrocatalytic conversions offer a promising route for sustainable chemical production using renewable energy. Gas diffusion layers (GDLs) enable selective product formation at high current densities but suffer from electrolyte flooding, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-based GDLs typically require metal conductive layers, which constrain catalyst development. A recently developed GDL configuration, electropolymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-coated PTFE, demonstrates notable flooding resistance, but suffers from gas diffusion limitations at elevated currents due to limited gas diffusion through the PEDOT layer. Here, different dopants in PEDOT are exploited to modify the physical properties and enhance gas transport. ClO 4 − -doped PEDOT exhibits superior performance due to optimized physical structure, leading to increased gas permeance and faradaic efficiency (FE) for CO production during electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Further optimization of coverage and thickness achieved by adjusting charge density led to an optimal configuration at 33 mC cm −2 . This GDL supports various metal electrocatalysts and demonstrates FE CO of > 90% for over 150 h at −200 mA cm −2 using a commercial silver electrocatalyst. This work highlights the importance of GDL engineering in enhancing performance and durability for long-term electrocatalytic processes.

Activating Nitrogen–doped Graphene Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts in Acidic Electrolytes using Hydrophobic Cavities and Proton–conductive Particles

Although pyridinic-nitrogen (pyri-N) doped graphene is highly active for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of fuel cells in alkaline media, the activity critically decreases under acidic conditions. Herein we report on how to prevent the deactivation based on the mechanistic understanding that O 2 + pyri–NH ⁺ + e – → O 2,a + pyri–NH governs the ORR kinetics. First, we considered that the deactivation is due to the hydration of pyri-NH + , leading to a lower shift of the redox potential. Introducing the hydrophobic cavity prevented the hydration of pyri-NH + but inhibited the proton transport. We then increased proton conductivity in the hydrophobic cavity by introducing SiO 2 particles coated with ionic liquid polymer/Nafion® which kept the high onset potentials with an increased current density even in acidic media.

Nitrogen–Rich Conjugated Macrocycles: Synthesis, Conductivity, and Application in Electrochemical CO 2 Capture

Here we report a series of nitrogen-rich conjugated macrocycles that mimic the structure and function of semiconducting 2D metal–organic and covalent organic frameworks while providing greater solution processability and surface tunability. Using a new tetraaminotriphenylene building block that is compatible with both coordination chemistry and dynamic covalent chemistry reactions, we have synthesized two distinct macrocyclic cores containing Ni–N and phenazine-based linkages, respectively. The fully conjugated macrocycle cores support strong interlayer stacking and accessible nanochannels. For the metal–organic macrocycles, good out-of-plane charge transport is preserved, with pressed pellet conductivities of 10 –3 S/cm for the nickel variants. Lastly, using electrochemically mediated CO2 capture as an example, we illustrate how colloidal phenazine-based organic macrocycles improve electrical contact and active site electrochemical accessibility relative to bulk covalent organic framework powders. Together, these results highlight how simple macrocycles can enable new synthetic directions as well as new applications by combining the properties of crystalline porous frameworks, the processability of nanomaterials, and the precision of molecular synthesis.

Preparation of silver nanoparticle functionalized polyamide fibers with antimicrobial activity and electrical conductivity

ABSTRACT In this work, silver nanoparticle functionalized polyamide 6 (PA6) fibers were prepared using the electroless plating method. The surface of PA6 fibers was modified by exploiting dopamine/CuSO 4 /H 2 O 2 system prior to electroless plating to enhance the bonding force between the fiber and the silver nanoparticles. It was found that both the formation rate and the chemical stability of polydopamine (PDA) coatings on the PA6 fiber surface were improved by the introduction of CuSO 4 /H 2 O 2 . The results confirmed the successful deposition of silver nanoparticles on PA6 fiber surface and the average particle diameter of 223 nm. Compared with uncoated fibers, the silver plated PA6 fibers exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity to both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (with an antimicrobial efficiency of 99.9% and 100%, respectively). The electrical resistance of the silver coated PA6 fibers reached 0.98 Ω over a length of 1 cm, indicating a good electrical conductivity. In particular, coating durability of the formed silver layer was investigated by subjecting the fibers to various mechanical deformations, and the results showed that the formed silver layer was maintained well after 50 times of cyclic stretching at a constant displacement of 10 mm. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly Stable and Conductive 1,3‐Dioxolane/Hydrocarbon Based Electrolyte Solvent for Advanced Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Abstract Developing effective electrolytes is crucial for boosting the performance of Lithium‐Sulfur (LiS) rechargeable battery. Recent improvements in electrolyte formulations have enhanced cyclability by increasing electrochemical stability at the electrode interfaces. However, achieving both high ionic conductivity (σ) and stability at these interfaces simultaneously remains a significant challenge. In this study, we utilized a strategy to suppress polysulfide dissolution by employing a mixture of 1,3‐dioxolane (DOL) and hydrocarbon solvents with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) electrolyte salt. Compared to the conventional electrolyte solution, which is 1 M LiTFSI salt in a 50/50 vol % mixture of DOL and dimethoxy ethane (DME), the LiTFSI electrolyte with DOL/hydrocarbon solvents demonstrate better cycling stability, compatibility with the Li‐metal anode, and a high specific discharge capacity (Csp). Among the various DOL/hydrocarbon and LiTFSI electrolyte salts, the combination of DOL and n‐hexane, a linear hydrocarbon, with LiTFSI electrolyte salt, (DnH40LiTFSI) exhibits remarkable σ (6.5×10 −3 S/cm at 30 °C), compatibility with the Li‐metal anode, an initial Csp of ca. 1264 mAh/g, cycling stability (Csp and Coulombic efficiency are 811 mAh/g and 98.09 % after 120 cycles) at 0.1 C by forming a good protective layer on the Li‐metal surface and preventing polysulfide dissolution.

Conducting Polymers Meet Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted increased interest because of the high theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Conducting polymers (CPs), as one of the most promising materials used in Li–S batteries, can not only facilitate electron transfer and buffer the large volumetric change of sulfur benefiting from their porous structure and excellent flexibility, but also enable stronger physical/chemical adsorption capacity toward polysulfides (LiPSs) when doped with abundant heteroatoms to promote the sulfur redox kinetics and achieve the high sulfur loading. This review firstly introduces the properties of various CPs including structural CPs (polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANi), polyethylene dioxothiophene [PEDOT]) and compound CPs (polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) [PAA]), and their application potential in Li–S batteries. Furthermore, the research progress of various CPs in different components (cathode, separator, and interlayer) of Li–S batteries is systematically summarized. Finally, the application perspective of the CPs in Li–S batteries as a potential guidance is comprehensively discussed.

Surface Modification of Nickel-Rich Cathode Materials by Ionically Conductive Materials at Room Temperature

Nickel-rich cathode materials (LiNi x Mn y Co 1-x-y O 2 , NMC) are promising to push the limits of lithium-ion batteries to higher energy density. This approach is favored in practical applications including electric vehicles and aviation transportation. However, the instability of the NMC at charged state results in safety concerns and poor cycling stability. Surface coating is a practical and effective strategy to address this. Cubic Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is an ideal coating material regarding the low electron transfer rate and high Li+ conductivity. Thus, a LLZO coating layer can suppress the parasitic reactions in the electrode/electrolyte interface without deteriorating the lithium migration. However, high-temperature calcination seems to inevitably create the chemical couplings between NMC and LLZO, leading to the interdiffusion and degradation of NMC and LLZO crystal structures. This work presents a simple mechanochemical method to effectively coat LLZO on the NMC particle surface. Furthermore, the coated cathode demonstrates superior electrochemical performance compared with the pristine NMC cathode.

Enhancing Crystallization in Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells Using Thermally Conductive 2D Boron Nitride Nanosheet Additive

Controlling crystallization and grain growth is crucial for realizing highly efficient hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, enhanced PSC photovoltaic performance and stability by accelerating perovskite crystallization and grain growth via 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheet additives incorporated into the active perovskite layer are demonstrated. Specifically, in situ X-ray scattering and infrared thermal imaging during the perovskite annealing process revealed the highly thermally conductive hBN nanosheets promoted the phase conversion and grain growth in the perovskite layer by facilitating a more rapid and spatially uniform temperature rise within the perovskite film. Complementary structural, physicochemical, and electrical characterizations further showed that the hBN nanosheets formed a physical barrier at the perovskite grain boundaries and the interfaces with charge transport layers, passivating defects, and retarding ion migration. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the PSC is improved from 17.4% to 19.8%, along with enhanced device stability, retaining ≈90% of the initial efficiency even after 500 h ambient air storage. Here, the results not only highlight 2D hBN as an effective additive for PSCs but also suggest enhanced thermal transport as one of the pathways for improved PSC performance by 2D material additives in general.
