Far-infrared properties of cluster galaxies

Far-infrared properties are derived for a sample of over 200 galaxies in seven clusters: A262, Cancer, A1367, A1656 (Coma), A2147, A2151 (Hercules), and Pegasus. The IR-selected sample consists almost entirely of IR normal galaxies, with Log of L(FIR) = 9.79 solar luminosities, Log of L(FIR)/L(B) = 0.79, and Log of S(100 microns)/S(60 microns) = 0.42. None of the sample galaxies has Log of L(FIR) greater than 11.0 solar luminosities, and only one has a FIR-to-blue luminosity ratio greater than 10. No significant differences are found in the FIR properties of HI-deficient and HI-normal cluster galaxies.

On the collapse and violent relaxation of protoglobular clusters

During the formation of stellar systems such as globular clusters, low-mass subcondensations which eventually form stars must retain a geometric size throughout the collapse process that is small compared to the characteristic distance separating them. If the local velocity dispersion of the subcondensations is small, the overall dimension of the system can decrease substantially before reaching a dynamical equilibrium state. The maximum collapse factor is deduced by examining the growth of the velocity dispersion and the spread in arrival times at the origin caused by local and global fluctuations. It is shown, analytically as well as in a series of N-body simulations, that the maximum reduction in the characteristic dimension of a system of N fragments with an initial homogeneous distribution subject to N exp 1/2 fluctuations is proportional to N exp 1/3. Direct physical collisions between low-mass subcondensations are therefore unlikely to occur in protoglobular clusters. The results are discussed in the context of fragmentation and violent relaxation.

Determination of the masses of elliptical galaxies and clusters of galaxies with AXAF

The procedures to be used in the determination of the mass and mass distribution of elliptical galaxies and clusters of galaxies, using spatially resolved X-ray spectra of galaxies and clusters of galaxies to be obtained by the imaging spectrometers on AXAF, are described. The procedures utilize the unique AXAF features of large band width, large field of view, high angular resolution, long exposure times, and the availability of sophisticated AXAF instrumentation. The techniques described involve the measurement of the surface brightness and temperature profiles of the hot gas trapped in the potential wells of these systems. Then, by using the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium, which relates the total mass inside a given radius to the size, absolute temperature, density gradient, and temperature profile, it will be possible to infer the mass distribution in these objects to large physical scales.

Alignments of brightest cluster galaxies with large-scale structures

Using an independent sample of brightest galaxies in rich clusters in the southern galactic hemisphere, the Argyres et al. (1986) result that galaxy counts on scales to at least 15/h Mpc are systematically higher in the direction of the major axes of brightest cluster galaxies is confirmed.

The Einstein Observatory survey of stars in the Hyades cluster region

The paper reports the results of an extensive X-ray study of the Hyades region and improves on previous studies by using refined X-ray source detection algorithms and the complete set of Einstein Observatory IPC exposures covering the Hyades cluster region (a total of 63 1 x 1 deg images). Maximum likelihood integral X-ray luminosity functions were computed for the Hyades stars for given color index (B-V) ranges. The present results agree substantially with a previous survey about the ubiquity of the stellar activity in the Hyades cluster, especially among solar-type stars. The result of Stern et al. (1981) that stellar X-ray emission is dependent on stellar age is confrimed.

Globular cluster luminosity functions

The use of luminosity functions in determining the helium content, age, and initial mass function of globular clusters, and in testing the stellar structure theory is reviewed. The main sequence turnoff and subgiant phases are examined. The Thomas (1967) peak in the luminosity function and the gap near the base of the giant branch of globular clusters found in the CM are discussed as probes of stellar structure. Research in the area of faint star photometry, dealing with the lower main sequence luminosity function and the interplanetary magnetic field is presented.

The evolution of the system of globular clusters

The physical processes affecting the evolution of the system of globular clusters are reviewed. Aspects of internal structure evolution discussed include evaporation, core collapse, expansion, tidal shocks, and interaction with other massive components of the Galaxy such as black holes, molecular clouds, and other clusters. The evolution of orbital parameters is examined, including dynamical friction, scattering by massive subcomponents, and interactions with nearby systems. In addition, an overview of the system evolution is presented.

Ultra-compact and X-ray binaries in globular clusters

A summary of ongoing work on the properties, origin, and evolution of low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters and in the Galactic Bulge is presented. This discussion centers on the insights into these problems that can be derived from study of the ultracompact binary systems, such as the recently discovered 11-minute binary in the globular cluster NGC 6624.

Performance analysis of the Alliant FX/8 multiprocessor using statistical clustering

Results for two distinct, real, scientific workloads executed on an Alliant FX/8 are discussed. A combination of user concurrency and system overhead measurements was taken for both workloads. Preliminary analysis shows that the first sampled workload is comprised of consistently high user concurrency, low system overhead, and little paging. The second sample has much less user concurrency, but significant paging and system overhead. Statistical cluster analysis is used to extract a state transition model to jointly characterize user concurrency and system overhead. A skewness factor is introduced and used to bring out the effects of unbalanced clustering when determining states with important transitions. The results from the models show that during the collection of the first sample, the system was operating in states of high user concurrency approximately 75 percent of the time. The second workload sample shows the system in high user concurrency states only 26 percent of the time. In addition, it is ascertained that high system overhead is usually accompanied by low user concurrency. The analysis also shows a high predictability of system behavior for both workloads.

Cluster: A fleet of four spacecraft to study plasma structures in three dimensions

The four Cluster spacecraft are spin stabilized spacecraft which are designed and built under stringent requirements as far as electromagnetic cleanliness is concerned. Conductive surfaces and low electromagnetic background noise are mandatory for accurate electric field and cold plasma measurements. The mission is implemented in collaboration between ESA and NASA. A Russian mission will be closely coordinated with Cluster.

HEAO 1 hard X-ray observation of clusters of galaxies and intracluster magnetic fields

The results of HEAO 1 hard X-ray measurements of three clusters of galaxies, Abell 401, Abell 2255, and Abell 2256 are reported. Nonthermal components were not detected above the level of 10 to the -5th photons/sq cm/s/keV. Comparison of the flux upper limits with theoretical predictions yields lower limits of about 10 to the -7th gauss on the mean value of the intracluster magnetic fields in the central regions of these clusters.

Lithium in lower-main-sequence stars of the Alpha Persei cluster

Lithium abundances are presented for main-sequence stars of spectral types F, G, and K in the young open cluster Alpha Per. For 46 cluster members, a correlation between Li abundance and projected rotational velocity v sin i is found: all of the Li-poor stars are slow rotators. Two explanations are proposed to account for the correlation: (1) that the Li depletion is introduced following a rapid spin-down phase experienced by young low-mass stars, and that this episode of Li depletion may be the dominant one determining the spread of Li abundances among young low-mass main-sequence stars, and (2) that star formation has occurred over a finite period such that the older stars have undergone a spin-down and depletion of Li by a means that may or may not depend on rotation. The Li abundance in the warm and rapidly rotating stars appears to be undepleted, as is predicted by recent models of pre-main-sequence stars. The depletion observed in the cool stars exceeds the level predicted by these models.

Hot gas in evolving galaxy clusters and groups - Implications for the microwave and X-ray backgrounds

A phenomenological model for the luminosity function of galaxy groups and clusters allows its evolution to be described in terms of the two-point galaxy correlation function. The observable properties of hot gas in virialized groups and clusters at high redshift have been computed. These include the spectral distortion by Comptonization of the cosmic blackbody spectrum, fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background arising by this same process, and the diffuse X-ray background and fluctuations therein arising from thermal emission by the intracluster gas.

A red envelope around a dominant elliptical galaxy in an X-ray selected poor cluster

A photometric and spectroscopic study of the optical counterpart of the X-ray source 1E 1111.9-3754 has revealed a poor cluster of galaxies dominated by a very luminous giant elliptical. Three-color surface photometry of this galaxy shows that the elliptical body is surrounded by a large envelope with colors redder than the galaxy. The formation of this system in a high velocity dispersion poor cluster is briefly discussed.

Synthetic horizontal branch models for globular clusters - The luminosity of the horizontal branch and the Oosterhoff effect

The variation of horizontal-branch (HB) luminosities with metal abundances is analyzed on the basis of HB models synthesized from theoretical HB evolutionary tracks. The focus is on the Oosterhoff effect, as related to period shifts in globular-cluster RR Lyr variables. The construction of the models and the Oosterhoff period groups is explained in detail, and the implications for globular-cluster ages are considered. The ratio of Delta M(bol) (RR) to Delta Fe/H for the HB is calculated as 0.24, slightly steeper than that found by Sandage (1981 and 1982).

Soho and Cluster - The scientific instruments

The mission goals and instrumentation of the Soho and cluster spacecraft to be launched in 1995 as part of the international Solar-Terrestrial Science Program are discussed. Instruments such as normal-incidence, grazing-incidence, and EUV coronal spectrometers aboard the Soho spacecraft will study the origin of the solar wind and the physical properties of the solar atmosphere. The four Cluster spacecraft will measure electric and magnetic fields, plasmas, and energetic particles using instruments including a wide-band receiver system, a relaxation sounder, and a search coil magnetometer.

A test for spatial clustering in the presence of auxiliary information

A technique is proposed to test for the presence of clusters when both spatial and auxiliary information is available. The test is based on randomizing the auxiliary information over the spatial locations. It requires no model assumptions (such as a Poisson process) for the spatial distribution. The procedure may be used to screen data for possible clustering.

Einstein Observatory solid state detector observations of cooling flows in clusters of galaxies

Einstein Observatory (EO) solid state spectrometer results for the cooling flows in nine clusters of galaxies are discussed. An analysis of the data using three separate models provides strong evidence for the existence of cool components in the centers of these clusters. The obtained distribution of emission versus temperature for M87 is found to agree well with that determined from data obtained by the EO focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer.
