An Improved Transmission Switching Algorithm for Managing Post-(N-1) Contingencies in Electricity Networks

In this presentation, we detail the shortcomings of existing transmission switching (TS) methodologies for preventing post-contingency loss of load in wide area electric power networks. Following that, we present a bi-level algorithm as an improvement to the state of the art. We show proof-of-concept level results that indicate computational viability, fast solutions, and the ability to pick the same best candidate as non computationally viable methods. Further, our method also minimizes load shedding after the contingency, thus enhancing the reliability and security of electricity supply. We also include a futuristic scenario of increased renewables and decreased natural gas sourced generators to show promising results. We grant permission for our presentation to be recorded and uploaded by the conference organizers.

Database Management Module Framework for Dynamic Contingency Analysis and Visualization

The Dynamic Contingency Analysis Tool (DCAT) is being developed to mimic the response of generation dynamics, protection, and load components to extreme contingencies in power systems. Currently, DCAT generates a huge data set, with the analysis results stored in multiple subfolders using a great many files in different formats (power flow cases, time series, figures, spreadsheets). To help power system engineers thoroughly understand and analyze system behavior under many scenarios and contingencies, we developed a database management module (DBM) that enables future integration of DCAT with industry-grade Big Data analytical and interactive visualization platforms. In this paper, we demonstrate the DBM framework with interactive analytics and visualization for DCAT on the synthetic South Carolina 500-bus power system model using hurricane contingencies that capture possibilities for an extreme contingency. DCAT’s advanced data management and interactive visualization can help planning engineers to visually explore and analyze system behavior, all in one view.

A Computationally Improved Heuristic Algorithm for Transmission Switching Using Line Flow Thresholds for Load Shed Reduction

We present a computationally improved heuristic algorithm for transmission switching (TS) to recover load shed. Research from the past showed that changing power system topology may control power flows and remove line congestion. Hence, TS may reduce the required load shed. One of the main challenges is to find a potential TS candidate in a suitable time. Here, we propose a novel heuristic method that is capable of finding the potential TS candidate faster than existing algorithms in literature. The proposed method is compatible with both the AC and DC optimal power flows (OPF). Three metrics are used to compare the proposed algorithm with the state-of-the-art from literature to show the speedup and accuracy achieved. The proposed method is implemented on the IEEE 30-bus system, PEGASE 89-bus system, IEEE 118-bus system, and Polish 2383- bus system. The results on the large-scale Polish 2383-bus system shows that the proposed algorithm is scalable to large real-world systems. Parallel computing is implemented to further improve the computational performance of the proposed algorithm.

Chemical looping conversion of CH4/CO2 to syngas on 5wt.%Ni@Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst: Impact of dynamic accumulation of surface carbon and oxygen vacancies

Syngas, a combination of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), is a precursor to many chemicals and fuels, contributing to the billion-dollar global hydrocarbon industry. Chemical looping reforming (CLR) of the greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) allows for energy-efficient production of syngas. 5wt.% nickel (Ni) on ceria-zirconia (5wt%Ni@Ce0.6Zr0.4O2) mixed metal oxide catalyst was investigated here to explore pathways for enhanced syngas production on sustainable earth-abundant transition metal supported catalysts. The role of reduction-oxidation (redox) state of the catalyst, and carbon formation on the catalyst surface during chemical looping is explored to drive superior reaction kinetics, conversions, selectivity, and syngas ratios (H2/CO). The bulk and surface structure of the catalyst, along with carbon deposition features were characterized by electron microscopy, X-Ray diffraction, and ex situ Raman spectroscopy. The dynamic evolution of catalysts under CLR reaction conditions and the intrinsic reaction mechanisms were probed with in situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ Fourier transform spectroscopy, dynamic oxygen storage capacity (DOSC), and the Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor studies. Intrinsic kinetics of syngas production via CLR was correlated to the redox state of catalyst and the participation of nickel-catalyzed multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) growth, allowing enhanced CLR reaction performance.

Nuclear-Renewable-Storage Systems: Enhancing Planning and Operations of Integrated Energy Systems

Nuclear-renewable-storage integrated energy systems (IES) are multi-carrier energy systems that include not only electricity but also other forms of demands. Because individual IES components must observe their thermo-physical limits, including ramp rates, start-up, and shut-down time, we formulate operations of the IES as an optimization model by minimizing the total operations costs subject to physical limits of all constituent components. In addition, we develop a data-driven approach to improve the computational performance of the economic dispatch model by using reinforcement learning, where an agent is rewarded by meeting demands and penalized otherwise when shifting to the next state.

Optimal operations of a nuclear-based integrated energy system: A mixed integer program approach

A nuclear-based integrated energy system (IES), consisting of multiple carbon-free energy generation and conversion technologies to meet heterogeneous end-use demands, offers a promising approach to decarbonizing the U.S. economy. Operating such an IES is challenging due to its complexity and the diverse end-use demands, such as heating and electricity. This paper aims to address the optimal operation of an IES composed of a small modular reactor (SMR), a steam manifold, a balance of plant (BOP), a high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) system, a district heating (DH) network, and electrical grids. We formulate the system’s operation as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem to maximize net revenues from sales of electricity and hydrogen. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed model, we conduct a 24-hour simulation considering day-ahead (DA) electricity prices from CAISO and a varying DH demand profile with hourly resolution. The simulation results show that our model effectively optimizes the operation by selling electricity during on-peak periods and purchasing electricity for hydrogen production during off-peak periods, while satisfying operating constraints within the IES.

Atomistic Modeling of Irradiation-Induced Defects and Clusters in Additively-Manufactured Austenitic Stainless Steel

Understanding the progression of irradiation-induced defects in real materials and alloys requires insight into the interaction between point defects, defect clusters, and the existing microstructure. This is particularly true when it comes to additively manufactured (AM) materials with complicated microstructures and residual stresses. In this work, we employ molecular dynamics (MD) to simulate the creation of point defects via primary radiation damage modeling and point defect interactions with extended defects such as voids and dislocations using simplified but representative alloy compositions. We analyze the effect of alloying elements on the formation energies of the defect clusters and measure interactions such as sink strengths and binding energies. This study provides insight into the unique behaviors of irradiation damage in AM materials and information necessary to bridge the gap in length and time scales to connect the atomistic behavior of defects to longer length scale simulations such as cluster dynamics.
