Carbon Materials Embedded with Metal Nanoparticles as Anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Carbon materials containing metal nanoparticles that can form an alloy with lithium were tested for their capacity and cycle life to store and release lithium electrochemically. Metal nanoparticles may provide the additional lithium storage capacity as well as additional channels to conduct lithium in carbon. The cycle life of this carbon-metal composite can be long because the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) on the carbon surface may protect both lithium and the metal particles in the carbon interior. In addition, the voids in the carbon interior may accommodate the nanoparticle's volume change, and such volume change may not cause much internal stress due to small sizes of the nanoparticles. This concept of improving carbon's performance to store and release lithium was demonstrated using experimental cells of C(Pd)/0.5M Lil-50/50 (vol.%) EC and DMC/Li, where C(Pd) was graphitized carbon fibers containing palladium nanoparticles, EC was ethylene carbonate, and DMC was dimethyl carbonate. However, such improvement was not observed if the Pd nanoparticles are replaced by aluminum, possibly because the aluminum nanoparticles were oxidized in air during storage, resulting in an inert oxide of aluminum. Further studies are needed to use this concept for practical applications.

Effects of Carbon Structure and Surface Oxygen on the Carbon's Performance as the Anode in Lithium-Ion Battery Determined

Four carbon materials (C1, C2, C3, and C4) were tested electrochemically at the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field to determine their performance in lithium-ion batteries. They were formed as shown in the figure. This process caused very little carbon loss. Products C1 and C3 contained very little oxygen because of the final overnight heating at 540 C. Products C2 and C4, on the other hand, contained small amounts of basic oxide. The electrochemical test involved cycles of lithium intercalation and deintercalation using C/saturated LiI-50/50 (vol %) ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC)/Li half cell. The cycling test, which is summarized in the table, resulted in three major conclusions. The capacity of the carbon with a basic oxide surface converges to a constant 1. value quickly (within 4 cycles), possibly because the oxide prevents solvent from entering the carbon structure and, therefore, prolongs the carbon s cycle life. Under certain conditions, the disordered carbon can store more lithium than its 2. precursor. These samples and their precursor can intercalate at 200 mA/g and deintercalate at 3. a rate of 2000 mA/g without significant capacity loss.

Design of a Wideband 6-Anode Frequency Tripler at 300 GHz with Optimum Balance

We report on the design methodology of a fix-tuned split-block waveguide balanced frequency tripler working nominally at 300 GHz. It features six GaAs Schottky planar diodes in a balanced configuration. The circuit will be fabricated with JPL membrane technology in order to minimize dielectric loading and insure an accurate and uniform thickness of the substrate. The multiplier power handling is limited by the breakdown voltage of the diodes that depends on the doping level of the active layer. With six diodes, the current choice for the doping level leads to medium power handling capabilities of about 50 mW. Increasing the number of diodes to eight would be an option but would lead to increased difficulties in design and fabrication.

A High Efficiency Multiple-Anode 260-340 GHz Frequency Tripler

We report on the fabrication at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of a fixed-tuned split-block waveguide balanced frequency tripler working in the 260-340 GHz band. This tripler will be the first stage of a x3x3x3 multiplier chain to 2.7 THz (the last stages of which are being fabricated at JPL) and is therefore optimized for high power operation. The multiplier features six GaAs Schottky planar diodes in a balanced configuration integrated on a GaAs membrane. Special attention was put on splitting the input power as evenly as possible among the diodes in order to ensure that no diode is overdriven. Preliminary RF tests indicate that the multiplier covers the expected bandwidth and that the efficiency is in the range 1.5-7.5 % with 100 mW of input power.

Liquid Bismuth Propellant Management System for the Very High Specific Impulse Thruster with Anode Layer

Two prototype bismuth propellant feed systems were constructed and operated in conjunction with a propellant vaporizer. One system provided bismuth to a vaporizer using gas pressurization but did not include a means to measure the flow rate. The second system incorporated an electromagnetic pump to provide fine control of the hydrostatic pressure and a new type of in-line flow sensor that was developed for accurate, real-time measurement of the mass flow rate. High-temperature material compatibility was a driving design requirement for the pump and flow sensor, leading to the selection of Macor for the main body of both components. Posttest inspections of both components revealed no degradation of the material. The gas pressurization system demonstrated continuous pressure control over a range from zero to 200 torr. In separate proof-of-concept experiments, the electromagnetic pump produced a linear pressure rise as a function of current that compared favorably with theoretical pump pressure predictions, producing a pressure rise of 10 kPa at 30 A. Preliminary flow sensor operation indicated a bismuth flow rate of 6 mg/s with an uncertainty of plus or minus 6%. An electronics suite containing a real-time controller was successfully used to control the entire system, simultaneously monitoring all power supplies and performing data acquisition duties.

Three axis pulsed plasma thruster with angled cathode and anode strip lines

A spacecraft attitude and altitude control system utilizes sets of three pulsed plasma thrusters connected to a single controller. The single controller controls the operation of each thruster in the set. The control of a set of three thrusters in the set makes it possible to provide a component of thrust along any one of three desired axes. This configuration reduces the total weight of a spacecraft since only one controller and its associated electronics is required for each set of thrusters rather than a controller for each thruster. The thrusters are positioned about the spacecraft such that the effect of the thrusters is balanced.

Galvanic Protected Anode Materials for Molten Regolith Electrolysis

This effort aimed to explore the use of refractory alloys as long-lifetime electrode materials for use in a molten regolith electrolysis (MRE) reactor, a technology that can produce oxygen (O2) from regolith. To find a material capable of withstanding the high temperatures and corrosive nature of molten regolith, first-principles thermodynamic calculations were performed on platinum group metals in the presence of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si) to determine favorable compositions for resisting unwanted secondary phases that could form on the surface of the material. As a result of these first-principles calculations, the kinetic properties of elements such as aluminum (Al), Fe, and Si can be more easily derived, which would provide insight into the longevity of such a material when used in an MRE reactor. The effort funded by this CIF project mapped the entire phase diagram of platinum group metals, which is beneficial not only to MRE where high temperatures and molten material are present, but also aerospace applications like turbine materials, terrestrial metal processing techniques, and energy storage applications. This project narrowed a broad spectrum of refractory metals down to a small list of alloys that would be able to survive not only the high temperatures of an MRE reactor, but also the thermodynamic forces that would cause inferior alloys to form secondary phases, which would ultimately consume the electrodes of the reactor. This research needs to be followed up with experimental demonstrations of these alloys in an MRE environment.
