Port Impedance Measurement and Current Injection Response Analysis for PLCs

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are used to control devices throughout the power system since they have fast control capabilities and can utilize multiple types of communication interfaces. Therefore, studying and mitigating their vulnerabilities to electromagnetic pulse is important for the reliability of PLC operations. Here, in this paper, an effective impedance measurement scheme is proposed and demonstrated for three PLCs to estimate their susceptibility to an electromagnetic pulse. The equivalent non-uniform transmission line model is established to eliminate the impact of the fixture in the de-embedding process. Then different parameters of the impedance measurement setup are explored. Based on the measured impedance, the equivalent circuit is established to calculate the response of the device when subjected to the electromagnetic pulse. The voltage and current responses of different interfaces are compared utilizing the developed pulsed Current Injection (CI) method. Finally, the impedance measurement scheme is verified through testing using three measuring instruments. And the CI simulation experiments reveal the characteristics and susceptibilities of different PLCs interfaces, indicating that some protection measures are required for the reliable operation of the PLC.

Immunity Study: Port Impedance Measurement of PMU and PCI testing under EMP

With the increased requirements of real-time grid monitoring, disturbance location, and situation awareness, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) have become more critical for the Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS). However, the vulnerability of PMUs has not been well studied, especially under electromagnetic pulse (EMP) scenarios. The stable operation of the power system will be affected directly once EMP damages them. Therefore, studying their immunity to EMP events is urgent and necessary. In this paper, the effective impedance measurement scheme and pulsed current injection (PCI) testing are proposed for the port impedance measurement and immunity levels of PMUs. The equivalent non-uniform transmission line model is established to eliminate the impact of the fixture in the de-embedding process. Then, the circuit of the pulsed current generator is set to generate a damping sinusoid, and the double exponential wave is applied to the port. Finally, using measured impedance as a generator load, the voltage and current responses of different ports are calculated in the PCI testing simulation. In conclusion, results reveal the characteristics of port impedance, waveforms of voltage and current, and distribution of accumulative energy. The relation between port impedance and the waveforms is discussed.

Development of Real-Time High-Density Pulsar Data Transmission and Processing for Grid Synchronization

Taking advantage of the extreme stability of the pulsar period, it can serve as the timing source for grid synchronization to compensate for the timing drift instigated by the loss of GPS signal. Nevertheless, the real-time transmission and processing of the pulsar data suffer from its high-frequency data rate, varying from megahertz to gigahertz, resulting in reduced computing speed and increased time delay. To mitigate this issue, the hardware and software frameworks are implemented for the high-density pulsar data transmission and processing for grid synchronization in this research. Initially, the high-density pulsar data is transferred using open-source software. The complementary duty cycle timing module is designed to coordinate the operation of the dual-channel high-speed interface and software. Subsequently, the multiple-threading is applied to the receiving, parsing, and splicing pulsar data. Next, the pulsar signal extraction method is implemented based on the polyphase filterbank and time of arrival estimation. Ultimately, real-time performance verification experiments are carried out for different components under two hardware platforms. Finally, the results demonstrate that only 0.482 s is required for processing 4 Gigabyte data through multiple-threading, which is 3.8 times faster than the single thread. The pulsar signal extraction can also be executed within 707 ms for 4.8 seconds of data, thereby indicating that real-time requirements can be met.

Rapid Monitoring and Defense Approach for Resilience Improvement of Grid Cyber Security

Cyber-physical systems and electric utilities significantly depend on the reliability and efficiency of information and operational technology. However, false data injection attacks based on synchrophasor measurement data pose a serious threat to the safe and reliable operation of modern power systems. Here, to mitigate this problem, a rapid monitoring and defense approach is proposed to defend against cyber attacks. Initially, the Time and Frequency based Convolutional neural Network (TFCN) is proposed to detect different types of attacks. Within the TFCN, the advances are that both time and frequency domain information can be fused without extra spectrum analysis methods, and can save detection time to speed the calculation efficiency using the developed time-frequency block. Next, a comprehensive defense strategy is developed for multiple cyber attacks to ensure the stability and resilience of the power system according to the feedback detection results. The advances of this strategy are that different control strategies can be automatically selected to recover the stability to the greatest extent according to the detected attacks. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the high-speed frequency measurements collected from the wide-area monitoring system are used. The results demonstrate that the cyber attack detection performance can reach 95.57% accuracy, outperforming both traditional and some advanced neural networks. Importantly, the defense strategy is conducted and verified in a modified IEEE 39 bus system as well, which illustrates profound performance in faster stability restoration.

Lossy Compression: An Online Multi-Stage Technology for High-Fidelity Synchro- Waveform Measurements

Effective real-time monitoring and analysis of distributed grids necessitate the use of synchro-waveform measurements, which capture almost all high-frequency disturbances and transient phenomena. However, due to limitations in high-speed measurements and network bandwidth, it is challenging to transfer all high-fidelity synchro-waveforms losslessly and successfully. To cope with these challenges, a hybrid-based online multi-stage compression algorithm is proposed to significantly improve the compression efficiency for synchro-waveform measurements. Initially, the multiple discrete Wavelet transformation is deployed to deconstruct the waveform components. The delta encoding is further developed to decrease the magnitude. In conjunction with the Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain, the hybrid compression algorithm is implemented to achieve real-time compression for the synchro-waveform measurements. Moreover, an innovative error index that synergizes the time and frequency domain error and correlation is formulated to evaluate the waveform distortion. By integrating compression ratio, suitable parameters can be optimally selected. Finally, the simulation, laboratory experiments, as well as field tests across a spectrum of sampling frequencies and time intervals are conducted to substantiate the efficacy of the proposed method. Here, the outcomes demonstrated that a compression ratio of approximately 15.5 and 17.83 can be reached for 0.5 s and 1 s data under both offline and online scenarios, which equates to a substantial 93.5% to 94.39% reduction in data storage requirements.

Small-Signal Stability of Grid-Forming Converters Under Fault Conditions

Threshold virtual impedance (TVI)-based current limiting for grid-forming converters (GFMs) has gained great interest due to its ability to maintain voltage source behaviour during faults. However, sequence component extraction (SCE) and negative-sequence control (NSC) are often overlooked in small-signal stability assessments during faults. This paper develops small-signal sequence impedance models for GFMs under four well-known SCE methods based on TVI current limiting control during symmetrical fault conditions. Using the developed impedance models, the impacts of SCE and NSC, and the voltage and current control loop bandwidths, on system stability during faults are investigated. Additionally, since negative-sequence TVI (TVI-) is typically added along with its positive-sequence counterpart, which is often inductive, inductive and resistive TVI- are examined. The findings suggest that a higher voltage or current control loop bandwidth has a negative impact on system stability, while SCE and NSC largely reduce the stable range for voltage and current control loop bandwidth during faults, and that the severity of such impacts is determined by the particular SCE method. Furthermore, it is observed that inductive TVI- significantly degrades system stability, while resistive TVI- can enhance stability when suitable SCE methods are appropriately selected and designed. Matlab/Simulink electromagnetic transient simulations validate these analytical results.

Real-Time Lossless Compression for Ultra-High-Density Synchrophasor and Point on Wave Data

Modern advanced Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are developed with ultra-high reporting rates to meet the demand for monitoring the power systems dynamics in detail. Due to the large volume of data, the communication and storage systems are seriously challenged with the presence of Ultra-High-Density (UHD) synchrophasor and Point on Wave (POW) data. Therefore, it is an urgent task to compress the UHD data for more efficient communication and data storage. This paper proposes several methods to compress the synchrophasor and POW data in a lossless manner. First, an Improved-Time-Series-Special Compression (ITSSC) method is proposed to compress the UHD frequency data. Second, a Delta-difference Huffman method is combined with the TSSC algorithm to compress the UHD phase angle data. Finally, a cyclical high-order delta modulation method is proposed to compress the UHD POW data. The proposed models are extensively tested and compared with different existing lossless compression algorithms using the field-collected synchrophasor and POW data at different reporting rates. The results indicate that the proposed algorithms are efficient in performing lossless compression for the UHD synchrophasor and POW data in real time.

Field Measurement and Analysis of Frequency and RoCoF for Low-Inertia Power Systems

The frequency measurement and rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) calculations are important for active power, frequency control, and frequency-related protection in power system operations. With the rapid decrease in inertia under modern power systems, however, multiple power variations introduced by variable renewable energy bring large RoCoF and introduce oscillations in frequency measurements. To shed light on this issue, this article proposes a frequency measurement and RoCoF analysis technology, as well as the sensitivity analysis for the real low-inertia power grid. First, a real-world event in an island power grid is analyzed as an example, and an event numerical model is estimated considering four uncertainties, including event RoCoF, oscillation magnitude, oscillation frequency, and underfrequency load-shedding threshold. Then, a sensitivity analysis is performed using the Sobol indices method and quasi-Monte Carlo simulations to identify the dominant uncertainties based on the event model. Here, the dominant uncertainties are compared to provide a guideline for the frequency estimation algorithm selection under different event cases. This algorithm is compared with an enhanced zero-crossing algorithm and gives a 3.41% better RoCoF error rate. Finally, an experiment is conducted using universal grid analyzers to validate the simulation results and the theoretical analysis.

Intensity Modulated Fiber Optic Sensor: A Novel Grid Measurement Unit

This paper presents a novel approach to physical displacement-based power grid measuring via an Intensity Modulated Fiber Optic Sensor (IMFOS). An IMFOS utilizes one fiber to transmit the intensity modulation light from its Electro-Optic controller to a fiber optic probe. The power grid voltage and current can induce physical displacements in transducers via the piezoelectric effect and the Lorentz law, respectively, which then result in a distance change between the optical probe and the reflective surface of the transducers. In parallel, multiple fibers are used to collect the reflective light for electro-optic conversion. Furthermore, a National Instruments-based characterization platform is set up for performance evaluation. Here, the testing result demonstrates that the IMFOS is immune to the inherent DC and low-frequency saturation issues prevalent in conventional potential and current transformers. Finally, the IMFOS is implemented in a Universal Grid Analyzer to illustrate its applicability for phasor estimation in actual power grids.

Human-Machine Shared Control for Path Following Considering Driver Fatigue Characteristics

Fatigue driving has been regarded as one of the most important factors that cause traffic accidents. This paper proposes a robust human-machine shared control strategy to improve the vehicle performance for different driver fatigue states. Firstly, the time-varying driver steering model is proposed to address the model mismatch caused by fatigue driving. And the driver fatigue evaluation system is established based on facial features to quantify driver fatigue levels. Based on the quantified fatigue levels, a novel strategy for allocating authorities of the driver and controller is developed for building the driver-vehicle interaction system. Then, to weaken the influence of parameter perturbations caused by the time-varying driver states, we design a fatigue-based shared controller through state feedback. The actuator saturation and system constraints are considered in the controller design through the robust set-invariance property to improve vehicle safety and driving comfort. The driver-in-the-loop platform is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed shared steering controller. In conclusion, the experimental results show that the proposed strategy can adaptively optimize the human-machine authorities according to fatigue states and comprehensively improve vehicle performance.

A Human-Machine Shared Control Framework Considering Time-Varying Driver Characteristics

The uncertainties of driver's behavior seriously affect road safety and bring significant challenges to the human-machine cooperative control. Here, this paper proposes a human-machine shared control framework considering driver's time-varying characteristics to improve the co-driving cooperation performance. Firstly, the driving intention is introduced to describe the driver's involvement level through using Gauss-Bernoulli restricted Boltzmann machine method. And the index of driving ability is proposed to evaluate driver skills based on path-tracking errors. Then, a novel human-machine authority allocation strategy is designed by combining the two driving behavior characteristics and used to construct the driver-vehicle interaction system. Subsequently, a T-S fuzzy robust state-feedback shared control system is developed considering time-varying driver behaviors and vehicle states. Finally, the proposed shared steering system is validated by the driver-in-the-loop test bench. The results show that the proposed control method can reduce human-machine conflicts and has obvious superiority in improving performance of driving comfort, path tracking, and vehicle stability for the co-driving vehicles.

A Vision–based Robust $\mathcal{H}$ ∞ Gain Scheduling Longitudinal and Lateral Following Controller for Autonomous Vehicles on Urban Curved Roads

Implementing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in congested and intricate urban traffic scenarios poses significant challenges. To address the frequent stop–and–go motions exhibited by autonomous vehicles (AVs) navigating urban roads with changes in curvature, we propose a vision–based robust $\mathcal{H}$ ∞ adaptive cruise control system (ACC) for longitudinal control, plus a lane keeping assist system (LKAS) for lateral control. For the vision-based ACC, a weighted probability objective function for the vehicle following behavior is formulated. We incorporate $\mathcal{H}$ ∞ performance and gain scheduling techniques to mitigate the impact of uncertainty in visual sensor measurements. Furthermore, the optimal time headway is scheduled based on the velocity to ensure traffic flow efficiency and safety during the vehicle following process. For the LKAS, we introduce a road curvature estimation method that integrates lane and vehicle dynamics information to obtain the lateral and heading offsets. Next, the design criterion of the observer–based robust gain scheduling lateral motion controller is established by linear matrix inequality (LMI). Here, a series of experiments conducted within a camera–in–loop platform validate the proposed method.

Reducing Urban Traffic Congestion Using Deep Learning and Model Predictive Control

This article proposes a deep learning (DL)-based control algorithm—DL velocity-based model predictive control (VMPC)—for reducing traffic congestion with slowly time-varying traffic signal controls. This control algorithm consists of system identification using DL and traffic signal control using VMPC. For the training process of DL, we established a modeling error entropy loss as the criteria inspired by the theory of stochastic distribution control (SDC) originated by the fourth author. Herein, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce traffic congestion with a slowly varying traffic signal control input. Results of an ablation study demonstrate that this algorithm compares favorably to other model-based controllers in terms of prediction error, signal varying speed, and control effectiveness.

Modeling and ZVS Operation of the Isolated Modular Multilevel DC–DC Converter With a Unified Trapezoidal Wave Modulation

Here, this article introduces a unified trapezoidal wave (UTW) modulation scheme for the isolated modular multilevel dc–dc (IM2dc) converter, which consolidates multiple existing modulation strategies for the IM2dc converter, including the quasi-square wave (QSW) modulation, trapezoidal wave modulation, and sinusoidal wave modulation, into a unified framework. Furthermore, this article introduces the harmonic state-space (HSS) equations to model the IM2dc converter based on the UTW modulation method. The HSS model operates in the frequency domain, enabling it to circumvent the complexities associated with time-domain analysis and seamlessly integrate with the UTW modulation. This article proceeds to analyze the real and reactive power transfer characteristics of the IM2dc converter, as well as the power factor, considering the influence of multiple modulation parameters. Subsequently, it delves into the examination of zero voltage switching (ZVS) conditions for the IM2dc converter based on the UTW modulation and the HSS model. The complete ZVS boundaries of the IM2dc converter, taking various voltage ratios into account, are derived. This article also illustrates the effects of including harmonic orders in the modeling process, modulation parameters, and internal harmonic ripples on the ZVS boundaries. Finally, experimental validation of the analyses is conducted on a down-scaled prototype.

Alignment Method for Synchronized Phase Angle Measurement With Presence of Practical Time Shift

Synchronized Phase Angle Measurements (SPAMs) are widely used in power systems in the applications of situational awareness. However, the practical time shifts can lead to unexpected angle differences among Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) manufactured from various vendors. Moreover, since most of PMUs calculate phase angle via Discrete Fourier Transform based approaches, this issue becomes even worse under the off-nominal frequency condition. To mitigate the impact of practical timing shift, this letter presents a fast method to rectify the SPAM for appropriate alignment. To verify the performance of the proposed method, laboratory and field tests have been conducted by implementing the method in PMUs and phasor data concentrators, respectively. The results demonstrate that the standard deviations of the phase angle differences have significantly decreased to 0.1$^{\circ }$ order with the adoption of the proposed method.
