The positions and proper motions of HZ Her, the optical counterpart of the X-ray source Her X-1, and 12 field stars are determined in the system of the FK4. The proper motion of HZ Her is consistent with that expected for an object with a relatively low peculiar velocity located at the approximate 3-kpc distance estimated for Her X-1.
Data are presented from the Ariel-V All-Sky Monitor which indicate a 17-day periodicity of the X-ray spectra from Cyg X-3 (3U2030+40). The data are consistent with data from the Ariel V Sky Survey Experiment. Assuming that the high intensity state of Cyg X-3 is well fitted by a structureless black body (Serlemitsos et al., 1975), and that the 17-day maxima correspond to increased electron scattering in the source, it is suggested that the 17-day effect is analogous to the 35-day variation in Her X-1. The possible explanation of this phenomenon as a result of the 17-day orbital period of the binary system containing Cyg X-3 is severely constrained by the stability of the well-known 4.8-hour variation.

A ray trace analysis of the vignetting characteristics of the S-056 X ray telescope is presented. The relative energy is calculated in the spot formed in the focal plane of the S-056 X ray telescope by an off axis point source at infinity for off axis angles of 0, 1, 2, ..., 35 arc minutes. At each off axis angle, the relative energies are evaluated using theoretical X ray reflectivity curves for wavelengths of 8.34 A, 17.57 A, and 27.39 A, and also using an experimental X ray reflectivity curve for 8.34 A. The effects of vignetting due purely to the geometry of the S-056 optical system are evaluated separately, as well as jointly with the effects of mirror reflectivity.
It is noted that the 35-day X-ray high-low cycle of Her X-1 could be explained in terms of periodic obscuration of the source by a tilted and precessing 'slaved' accretion disk, which would require precession of the mass-shedding star and, consequently, a precessing binary orbit. Four months of Uhuru data obtained in 1972 are analyzed to determine whether the orbital precession can be detected as a Doppler modulation in the arrival times of the 1.24-sec X-ray pulsations. The precession geometry is examined, the test for precession is outlined, and a marginally significant indication of orbital precession in the Hz Her/Her X-1 system is obtained. Possible biases in the analysis are evaluated, and the spin-axis misalignment of HZ Her is estimated from the measured tilt of the orbit.
A model of a binary X-ray source immersed in a stellar wind from its companion star is considered. The geometry of the constant ionization and temperature contours in the model is discussed, and X-ray radiative transfer through the wind is described. The results are applied to make predictions about the presence and variability of iron K-shell fluorescence lines, to explain the light curve of Cen X-3 during a 'low' to 'high' state transition in July 1972, and to predict variability with orbital phase of resonance ultraviolet lines such as N V at 1238 and 1242 A from the binary system.
It is suggested that an out-of-the-ecliptic solar electric propulsion (SEP) mission be performed. Data would be gathered pertaining to the three-dimensional structure of solar features at radio and X-ray wavelengths, the properties of the solar wind as a function of latitude and time, the configuration of the interplanetary field and its relation to solar fields, and the modulations of cosmic rays to determine the spectrum of interstellar cosmic rays. The mission would also, it is thought, demonstrate the capability of SEP for use in Shuttle missions. The SEP spacecraft and the ongoing development of related systems are examined. The weight of a SEP stage is contrasted with the weight of a chemical rocket stage.
Twelve hundred days of 3-6 keV X-ray data from Her X-1, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3 accumulated with the Ariel-5 all-sky monitor are interrogated. The binary periodicities of all three can be clearly observed, as can the approximately 35-d variation of Her X-1, for which we can refine the period to 34.875 plus or minus .030-d. No such longer-term periodicity less than 200-d is observed from Vela X-1. The 26.6-d low-state recurrence period for Cen X-3 previously suggested is not observed, but a 43.0-d candidate periodicity is found which may be consistent with the precession of an accretion disk in that system. The present results are illustrative of the long-term studies which can be performed on approximately 50 sources over a temporal base which will ultimately extend to at least 1800 days.
Representative sets of recent experimental results and theoretical studies are summarized to show the current knowledge of energetic particle phenomena based mainly on observations near 1 AU. Measurements close to the sun of quantities such as particle spectra, charge and isotopic composition, and the flow of particles as a function of time, together with measurements of the plasma, magnetic field, X-rays, and gamma rays will not only reveal the properties of the source region and acceleration mechanisms but will also provide a better knowledge of the physics of the corona. These measurements may also reveal the existence of large scale inhomogeneities in the solar corona. The general requirements for making these measurements on the solar probe are listed. An energetic particle detector system which has the capability of resolving the charge and isotopic composition up to 50 MeV/nucleon may successfully measure the above quantities provided that it can perform under both very low and average intensity levels.
The energy loss-spectrum of secondary charged particles produced by the interaction of gamma-rays and energetic neutrons in silicon solid state detectors has been measured with a satellite-borne cosmic ray telescope. In the satellite measurements presented here two distinct neutral background effects are identified: secondary protons and alpha particles with energies of about 2 to 100 MeV produced by neutron interactions, and secondary electrons with energies of about 0.2 to 10 MeV produced by X-ray interactions. The implications of this neutral background for satellite measurements of low energy cosmic rays are discussed, and suggestions are given for applying these results to other detector systems in order to estimate background contamination and optimize detector system design.
Design features and capabilities of a soft X-ray instrument aboard OSO 8 are discussed, and results are presented for observations of AM Her, Her X-1, and Eta Car. The observations of AM Her indicate that: (1) the spectrum is composite, with a very steep or very-low-temperature component plus a rather flat or very-high-temperature component; (2) the relative phase of soft X-ray minimum and optical V-band primary minimum has remained stable over the interval between 1975 'high-state' observations and 1976 'low-state' observations; and (3) the times of soft X-ray minima and hard X-ray maxima coincide, to within the accuracy of the observations. For Her X-1, soft X-ray turn-on is found to lag behind hard X-ray turn-on by no more than 3 hr. It is suggested that little or no absorption of the soft X-ray component occurs during the on state by cool gas within the Her X-1 system. A strong source with a spectrum peaked between 0.4 and 1.5 keV has been detected which is consistent with a point source at the position of Eta Car.
A hard X-ray imaging instrument is described which is capable of high-resolution imaging of solar and cosmic hard X-ray sources between 2 and 80 keV during Shuttle sortie flights. The properties of solar burst sources and the resulting instrument requirements are discussed. The instrument envelope of 1.2 x 1.2 x 3.0 meters includes a tungsten multigrid collimator which has 4-arcsec resolution, a 40-arcmin response envelope and a point-source effective area of 26 sq cm. A combination of periodic fan beams and nonperiodic pencil beams enables a unique deconvolution to be achieved within a 128 x 128 arcsec field without mechanical scanning. The detector system is a set of direct-readout 40 atm-cm xenon-filled proportional counters designed to minimize background. The instrument is capable of refurbishment to optimize the collimator configuration for specific solar or cosmic scientific objectives, to upgrade the angular resolution, or to extend the high-energy response.
X-rays from Cygnus X-3 were observed during early 1978 with the detectors of the SAS-3 satellite. These observations in conjunction with earlier UHURU and ANS data indicate that the 4.8 hr period of Cygnus X-3 is increasing at the rate of P/P = (5/1 plus or minus 1.3) x 10 to the minus 6 power/1 yr. The sign and magnitude for this change are incompatible with a rotation model for the period and are in reasonable agreement with model predictions for orbital changes associated with mass loss and transfer in a binary system.

These observations, in conjunction with earlier Uhuru and ANS data, indicate that the 4.8 hr period of Cygnus X-3 is increasing at a rate of (5.1 + or - 1.3) times to the -6th per year. The sign and magnitude for this change are incompatible with a rotation model for the period and are in reasonable agreement with model predictions for orbital changes associated with mass loss and transfer in a binary system.
The most intense hard X-ray source in the confused region in Scorpius is identified as 4U1700-37. The 3.4-day modulation is seen above 20 keV with the intensity during eclipse being consistent with zero flux. The photon-number spectrum from 20 to 150 keV is well represented by a single power law with a photo-number spectral index of -2.77 + or - 0.35 or by a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT = 27 96.8-min X-ray modulation previously reported at lower energies. Despite the difficulties in reconciling both the lack of periodic modulation in the emitted X-radiation and the orbital dynamics of the system with theories of the evolution and physical properties of neutron stars, the observed properties of 4U1700-37 are all consistent with the source being a spherically accreting neutron star rather than a black hole.
X-ray observations of the first major outburst (since its initial discovery in 1969) of the "classical" transient X-ray source Cen X-4 were obtained with the Ariel 5 All-Sky Monitor. The flare light curve exhibits a double-peaked maximum at a level of approximately 4 times the Crab nebula, and its duration and characteristic decay time scale are the shortest yet observed from the class of "soft" X-ray transients. A total X-ray output of approximately 3 x 10 to the 43rd power ergs, a factor of approximately 20 less than that of the 1969 outburst is estimated. In addition, evidence is found for a regular modulation of the flux during the decline phase at a period of 8.2 plus or minus 0.2 hours. The existing data are consistent with a source model involving episodic mass exchange from a late-type dwarf onto a neutron star comparison in a relatively close binary system.

Observations extending over three binary periods in 1978 September were carried out with the high-energy X-ray spectrometer on OSO 8. The 3.4 day modulation is seen above 20 keV with the intensity during eclipse being consistent with zero flux. The photonumber spectrum from 20 to 150 keV is well represented by a single power law with a photonumber spectral index of -2.77 + or - 0.35 or by a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT = 27 (+15, -7)keV. The counting rate above 20 keV outside of eclipse shows no evidence for the 96.8 minute X-ray modulation previously reported at lower energies. Despite the difficulties that exist in reconciling both the lack of periodic modulation in the emitted X-radiation and the orbital dynamics of the system with our currently accepted theories of the evolution and physical properties of neutron stars, the observed properties of 4U 1700-37 are all consistent with the source being a spherically accreting neutron star rather than a black hole.
