Voltage-controlled reversible modulation of colloidal quantum dot thin film photoluminescence

Active modulation of quantum dot thin film photoluminescence (PL) has been far-reaching potential applications in biomedical and optoelectronic systems, but challenges remain in achieving large PL modulation depth and fast temporal response. Here, we report an efficient voltage-controlled optical down-converter by optically exciting a colloidal quantum dot thin film within a quantum dot light-emitting diode under reverse bias. Utilizing field-induced luminescence quenching, we show that a large electric field can strongly modify carrier dynamics in this nanostructured device, resulting in stable and reversible photoluminescence quenching. The device exhibits photoluminescence reduction of up to 99.5%, corresponding to a contrast ratio of 200:1 under the applied electric field of 3 MV cm -1 with a 300 ns response time. Using excitation wavelength dependent and transient PL spectroscopy, we further show that the high degree of quenching is achieved by a synergistic interplay of quantum-confined Stark effect and field-induced exciton dissociation.

Voltage waveform tailoring for high aspect ratio plasma etching of SiO 2 using Ar/CF 4 /O 2 mixtures: Consequences of low fundamental frequency biases

The use of non-sinusoidal waveforms in low pressure capacitively coupled plasmas intended for microelectronics fabrication has the goal of customizing ion and electron energy and angular distributions to the wafer. One such non-sinusoidal waveform uses the sum of consecutive harmonics of a fundamental sinusoidal frequency, f 0 , having a variable phase offset between the fundamental and even harmonics. In this paper, we discuss results from a computational investigation of the relation between ion energy and DC self-bias when varying the fundamental frequency f 0 for capacitively coupled plasmas sustained in Ar/CF 4 /O 2 and how those trends translate to a high aspect ratio etching of trenches in SiO 2 . The fundamental frequency, f 0 , was varied from 1 to 10 MHz and the relative phase from 0° to 180°. Two distinct regimes were identified. Average ion energy onto the wafer is strongly correlated with the DC self-bias at high f 0 , with there being a maximum at φ = 0° and minimum at φ = 180°. In the low frequency regime, this correlation is weak. Average ion energy onto the wafer is instead dominated by dynamic transients in the applied voltage waveforms, with a maximum at φ = 180° and minimum at φ = 0°. The trends in ion energy translate to etch properties. In both, the high and low frequency regimes, higher ion energies translate to higher etch rates and generally preferable final features, though behaving differently with phase angle.

Time-resolved electron energy distribution functions at the substrate during a HiPIMS discharge with cathode voltage reversal

Abstract The time-dependent plasma properties of a high-power impulse magnetron sputtering plasma are investigated which include a positive ‘kick’ pulse on the sputtering target 2 μ s after the main negative pulse, this reversing the voltage on the cathode. At a substrate 15 cm distant from the magnetron, the time-dependent electron energy distribution function (EEDF), plasma potential, potential commute time and plasma diffusion properties are measured using a single Langmuir probe. Results show that the positive pulse on the target expels plasma and raises the plasma potential across the chamber on the order of 1 to 2 μ s, which is the time scale of the electron diffusion. The EEDF at the substrate fits a Druyvesteyn distribution during the main negative pulse rising slightly in average energy over time. The distribution is still Druyvesteyn and at the very start of the positive pulse, but then loses the higher energy electrons and drops in average electron energy as the positive pulse progresses. A Boltzmann equation solver, BOLSIG+, was used to predict the EEDF at the substrate during the positive pulse and it agrees best with the measurements assuming a value of 0.2 Td for the E / N (electric field/gas number density).

A study of electroactive polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuators through the use of the electric modulus formalism and cyclic linear voltage sweeps

The conductivity and dielectric properties are integral to the function of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuators. The frequency-dependent properties of PVC gel actuators are investigated here in terms of their impedance, permittivity, and for the first time, electric modulus. The data shows that PVC gels’ conductive properties are just as, if not more, important as their dielectric properties in electromechanical transduction applications. The electrode polarization (EP) and its impact on the impedance and dielectric spectra of PVC gels, as well as the developed asymmetric space charge at the anode, are discussed. The electric modulus and tan δ spectra are used for the fitting of Cole-Cole (CC) and Debye relaxation models for gels of varying plasticizer content. The electrostatic adhesive force for PVC gels of varying plasticizer is also measured, indicating large electrostatic adhesion (>2 N cm -2 ). A cyclic linear voltage sweep is used to clarify the dynamics of space charge within the gels. The peak current (associated with space charge development) is seen to be concurrent with the onset of mechanical deformation, showing the asymmetric charge as the origin of electromechanical transduction. Additionally, the maximum charge transferred (as measured by the integration of current over time) before space charge development is found to correlate with the electrostatic adhesive force measured for the gels, pointing to a new method of characterizing PVC gels for actuation.

Time-resolved ion energy distribution functions during a HiPIMS discharge with cathode voltage reversal

Abstract The effect on the ion energy distribution function (IEDF) of plasma produced during a high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) discharge as the pulse conditions are varied is reported. Pressure was varied from 0.67–2.00 Pa (5–15 mTorr), positive kick pulses up to 200 V tested with a constant 4 μ s delay between negative and positive cycles. The results demonstrate that the resulting plasma during the positive cathode voltage reversal is the result of expansion through the largely neutral gas species between the end of the magnetic trap of the target and the workpiece. The plasma potential rises on similar time scale with the evolution of a narrow peak in the IEDF close to the applied bias. The peak of the distribution function remains narrow close to the applied bias irrespective of pulse length, and with only slight pressure dependence. One exception discovered is that the IEDF contains a broad high energy tail early in the kick pulse due to acceleration of ions present beyond the trap from the main pulse separate from the ionization front that follows.

Antiferromagnetic Parametric Resonance Driven by Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy

Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is a low-energy alternative to manipulate the ferromagnetic state, which has been recently also considered in antiferromagnets (AFMs). Here, we theoretically demonstrate that VCMA can be used to excite linear and parametric resonant modes in easy-axis AFMs with perpendicular anisotropy, thus opening the way for an efficient electrical control of the Néel vector and for the detection of high-frequency dynamics. Our work leads to two key results: (i) VCMA parametric pumping experiences the so-called “exchange enhancement” of the coupling efficiency and, thus, is 1–2 orders of magnitude more efficient than microwave magnetic fields or spin-orbit torques, and (ii) it also allows for zero-field parametric resonance, which cannot be achieved by other parametric pumping mechanisms in AFMs with an out-of-plane easy axis. Therefore, we demonstrate that VCMA parametric pumping is the most promising method for coherent excitation and manipulation of AFM order in perpendicular easy-axis AFMs.

Universal relation between doping content and normal-state resistance in gate voltage tuned ultrathin Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + x flakes

We report gate voltage tunable ultra-thin high-T c cuprates supply a unique platform to investigate the electronic phase diagram and superconductor-insulator transition. One of the challenges in this field is the precise determination of the doping content in the underdoped non-superconducting region. Here we report the discovery of a universal relation between the doping content p and the normal-state resistance at a fixed temperature R(T f ), p = α + β ln[1/R(T f )], in the ultra-thin Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x flakes. The in-depth analysis shows that the evolution of carrier scattering probability with doping content and the change of effective mass caused by superconductor-insulator transition are two key factors leading to this logarithmic relation. Based on our finding, the more precise electronic phase diagram can be established. In addition, the superconductor-insulator transition is verified to be a quantum phase transition using a finite size scaling analysis. The scaling exponent z v is found to have a close correlation with the disorder levels. The present result provides an important foundation to investigate the fascinating electronic states in the ultra-thin cuprates.

A Computational Efficient Space-Vector Modulation Scheme for A Hybrid Seven-Level Converter for Medium Voltage Grid-Tied Applications

In this paper, a fast space-vector modulation (SVM) scheme is proposed for a hybrid 7-level (7-L) converter, i.e., cascaded T-type converter and H-bridge converters, for grid-tied applications. Using oblique coordinate reference, the proposed SVM can quickly locate the switching triangle enclosing the reference vector in the 7-L space vector diagram. Then all available switching sequences and vector duty cycles are acquired by straightforward calculation without using any look-up tables, which significantly reduces the computational cost. The floating capacitor voltages are also stabilized by using the proposed SVM. Experimental studies on a scale-down prototype are presented in this work to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Thermal Design Consideration of Medium Voltage High Frequency Transformers

This paper describes a thermal design using epoxy potting for high frequency transformer (HFT) for medium voltage high power electronic applications, namely emerging solid-state transformers. To address HFT’s thermal stress problem, thermal performance of the HFT with air and epoxy potting cooling method are both simulated by magnetothermal-fluid coupling method (MTFCM). The effectiveness of the simulation analysis is verified in a 100 kW DC-DC resonant converter. Influencing factors including distance between the high frequency transformer and the metal enclosure, epoxy thermal conductivity and heat sink placements are simulated and analyzed. Finally, an optimal cooling structure is proposed for future high power HFTs.

The Impact of the Lightning Surge on SiC-based Medium-voltage Three-phase Four-wire Grid-connected Converters

The surge voltage induced by lightning will generate an inrush current in a grid-connected converter. It may not be large in Si-based converters because of the large grid side inductive filter. However, for SiC-based multi-level converters, the inrush current could be very large due to the small filter inductance, which is selected based on the current harmonic consideration. Most previous work focuses on system-level lightning protection while the converter-level impact, especially the internal components of the converter, is rarely discussed. This paper presents the analysis of the impact of the lightning surge on a 10 kV SiC MOSFET-based 13.8 kV three-phase four-wire grid-connected converter. The IEEE arrester model and the combined wave generator model in IEC 61000-4-5 standard are used to evaluate the inrush current, DC-link overvoltage, and component-to-ground potential of the converter. Analysis and simulation results have been provided to demonstrate the impact of lightning on the grid-connected converter. It is found that large inrush current occurs due to the small filter inductance, and the neutral-to-ground impedance impacts both the inrush current and the neutral point-to-ground potential.

Design of Auxiliary Circuit Elements for Achieving Zero Voltage Switching in a Wireless Power Transfer System

The auxiliary resonant commutated pole (ARCP) is being used to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) of power switches for improved efficiency and/or to reduce dv/dt at the switch node for better electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance and overall system reliability. This paper shows how an ARCP circuit can be used in a wireless power transfer system to achieve ZVS. Detailed analysis of ARCP circuit operation is presented to determine the requirements for achieving ZVS in the main switches of a wireless electric vehicle charging system. Based on this analysis, a design algorithm is developed to optimize the design of the ZVS assisting circuit components. The designed ARCP achieves soft switching of the MOSFETs in the primary inverter of an 85 kHz, 10 kW series-series compensated, stationary wireless power transfer system.

A Half-Bridge On-State Voltage Sensor for In-Situ Measurements

Current prognostics for life expectancy of power semiconductors utilize off-line measurements of the on-state resistance. Presented is a half-bridge (HB) on-state voltage (VON) sensor capable of being utilized for in-situ measurements enabling continuous and real-time monitoring of the on-state resistance. The design provides a single VON measurement output that contains independent VON information of both high and low side devices in a HB leg. The measurement output is referenced from the middle point of the HB and combines the two complementary VON sensing outputs. This system reduces the number of components, required number of analog signal processing circuits, and ADC channels for in-situ health monitoring of a power electronics system. These reductions will facilitate integration of the VON sensor with the gate driver board and achieve low system profile. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed VON measurements while switching with inductive and resistive loads.

A Third Harmonic Voltage Injection Technique to Improve The Power Transmission Capacity

To facilitate the growing deployment of renewable energy sources and increasing load demand, it is imperative to increase the power transmission capacity of the existing transmission corridors. The available power uprating techniques are either costly, or require significant alteration to the existing system. Moreover, most of these techniques are suitable for long transmission lines. In light of these limitations, a third harmonic voltage injection based power uprating technique is proposed in this article. The proposed technique is economic, immune to line impedance unbalance, and is applicable for any length of transmission line. Most importantly, the technique needs very minimal modification in the existing system at the substation level. The efficacy of the proposed technique is validated through simulation and experiments.

SCR-based Medium Voltage DC Solid-State Circuit Breaker

This paper describes a medium voltage solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) based on SCR technology, featuring short fault-interruption time and a minimal turn-off auxiliary circuit. The SSCB design incorporates a specialized SCR and a commutation circuit designed with an objective to reduce the required SCR hold-off/turn-off time, tq, which primarily determines the fault interruption duration. To validate the design, simulation analysis is presented, and a 1.5 kV 300 A SSCB prototype has been built and tested. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed design philosophy demonstrating the SSCB's ability to interrupt a 200 A load current in less than 50 μs. The proposed SCR-based SSCB has been developed for DC applications but is equally applicable to AC applications.

Wireless Pulse-Width Modulation Control of Power Converters Using Ultra-Wideband Technology for Distributed High-Voltage Systems

In this study, we present a new approach for wireless pulse-width modulation (PWM) control of a power converter, applicable to numerous power converters within a complex electrical distribution system. This method eliminates the need for multiple physical connections of gating/PWM signals among distributed converter modules. By using ultra-wideband-based communication, the PWM control signals can be wirelessly transmitted from a central controller to multiple converters simultaneously and seamlessly. System stability is thoroughly analyzed, and experimental results validate the efficacy of the wireless control scheme for a buck converter operating at a 50-kHz switching frequency. The minimum latency obtained from this setup is 5.38 ..mu..s. This control concept offers easier implementation of distributed control in high-voltage power systems, especially in multilevel architectures, even under harsh conditions with ambient noise.
