Analysis of the elliptic integrable non-linear system in IOTA using tracking of a single electron

Integrable nonlinear lattices that can be realized in practical accelerators are of great interest, as they offer the potential to support high-intensity beams via Landau damping of collective instabilities. One such system, based on an elliptic potential, has been extensively studied at the IOTA storage ring at Fermilab. The analysis of strongly nonlinear dynamics with multi-particle bunches is challenging due to the rapid decoherence of kicked beams. IOTA has the capability to track single electrons using linear multi-anode photomultiplier tubes for simultaneously measuring transverse coordinates and arrival times of synchrotron-radiation pulses. This technology enables the full reconstruction of turn-by-turn positions and momenta in all three planes for a single particle. Using this apparatus, we measured the dependence of small-amplitude tunes on the strength of the nonlinear magnet, as well as tunes dependence on oscillations amplitudes.

Software Engineering Improvement Plan

In performance of this task order, bd Systems personnel provided support to the Flight Software Branch and the Software Working Group through multiple tasks related to software engineering improvement and to activities of the independent Technical Authority (iTA) Discipline Technical Warrant Holder (DTWH) for software engineering. To ensure that the products, comments, and recommendations complied with customer requirements and the statement of work, bd Systems personnel maintained close coordination with the customer. These personnel performed work in areas such as update of agency requirements and directives database, software effort estimation, software problem reports, a web-based process asset library, miscellaneous documentation review, software system requirements, issue tracking software survey, systems engineering NPR, and project-related reviews. This report contains a summary of the work performed and the accomplishments in each of these areas.

Diffraction analysis and evaluation of several focus- and track-error detection schemes for magneto-optical disk systems

A commonly used tracking method on pre-grooved magneto-optical (MO) media is the push-pull technique, and the astigmatic method is a popular focus-error detection approach. These two methods are analyzed using DIFFRACT, a general-purpose scalar diffraction modeling program, to observe the effects on the error signals due to focusing lens misalignment, Seidel aberrations, and optical crosstalk (feedthrough) between the focusing and tracking servos. Using the results of the astigmatic/push-pull system as a basis for comparison, a novel focus/track-error detection technique that utilizes a ring toric lens is evaluated as well as the obscuration method (focus error detection only).

A pseudo-noise transponder design for low data rate users of the tracking and data relay satellite system

A compromise optimum design for the low data rate users of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) is presented. Design goals for the TDRSS are employed in this report to arrive at the transponder design. Multipath, R.F.I., antenna pattern anomolies, other user signals, and other definable degrading factors are included as trade-off parameters in the design. Synchronization, emergency voice, user stabilization, polarization diversity and error control coding are also considered and their impact on the transponder design is evaluated.

Model Predictive Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control for PDF Control Systems With Packet Losses

In this article, a fault-tolerant tracking control strategy is investigated for nonlinear probability density function (PDF) control systems with the actuator fault, uncertainties, unknown disturbance, and random packet losses. The control input signal dropout and measurement signal dropouts are described as the independent Bernoulli distribution. An adaptive fault diagnosis (FD) observer based on the Lyapunov function is given to simultaneously estimate the fault, disturbance, and state with packet losses. Furthermore, different from the traditional robust fault-tolerant control (FTC), a new active fault-tolerant tracking controller is designed based on the model predictive control framework, which has better adaptive fault-tolerant performance. Finally, the validity of the proposed FTC method has been proved by a simulation study of a papermaking process.

Noncoherent Tracking of a Source of a Data-Modulated Signal

A proposed tracking receiver system containing three suitably positioned antenna elements and special signal-processing equipment would determine the direction of incidence of a microwave signal containing spread-spectrum digital data modulation. If the system were to contain two sets of antenna elements separated by a known baseline, it could determine the location of the transmitter as the intersection of the lines of incidence on the two antennas. Such systems could be used for diverse purposes in outer space and on Earth, including tracking astronauts and small robotic spacecraft working outside a spacecraft or space station, and locating cellular telephones from which distress calls have been made. The principle of operation does not require the transmission of a special identifying or distress signal by the cellular telephone or other transmitter to be tracked; instead, the system could utilize the data signal routinely sent by the transmitter, provided that the signal had the characteristics needed for processing.

Assessment of the availability of the tracking and data relay satellite system for LANDSAT missions

The telecommunications availability that can realistically be provided by the tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS) for LANDSAT D type missions. Although the assessment focusses on the telecommunications requirements of the near Earth orbit missions of the 1985 - 1989 time frame, it emphasizes LANDSAT D and its competing demand for wideband, real-time RF link services from TDRSS. Limitations in availability of communications services are identified, including systematic TDRSS restrictions, conflicting telecommunication requirements and loading problems of all users (missions) which are to be supported by TDRSS. Several telecommunications alternatives for LANDSAT D utilization independent of TDRSS services are discussed.

Acurex Parabolic Dish Concentrator (PDC-2)

The design approach, rationale for the selected configuration, and the development status of a cost effective point-focus solar concentrator are discussed. The low-cost concentrator reflective surface design is based on the use of a thin, backsilvered mirror glass reflector bonded to a molded structural plastic substrate. The foundation, support, and drive subassembles are described. A hybrid, two-axis, Sun tracking control system based on microprocessor technology was selected. Coarse synthetic tracking is achieved through a microcomputer-based control system to calculate Sun position for transient periods of cloud cover as well as sundown and sunrise positioning. Accurate active tracking is achieved by two-axis optical sensors. Results of the reflective panel demonstration tests investigating slope error, hail impact survivability, temperature/humidity cycling, longitudinal strength/bending stiffness, and torsional stiffness are discussed.

Operation of Direct Drive Systems: Experiments in Peak Power Tracking and Multi-Thruster Control

Direct-drive power and propulsion systems have the potential to significantly reduce the mass of high-power solar electric propulsion spacecraft, among other advantages. Recent experimental direct-drive work has significantly mitigated or retired the technical risks associated with single-thruster operation, so attention is now moving toward systems-level areas of interest. One of those areas is the use of a Hall thruster system as a peak power tracker to fully use the available power from a solar array. A simple and elegant control based on the incremental conductance method, enhanced by combining it with the unique properties of Hall thruster systems, is derived here and it is shown to track peak solar array power very well. Another area of interest is multi-thruster operation and control. Dualthruster operation was investigated in a parallel electrical configuration, with both thrusters operating from discharge power provided by a single solar array. Startup and shutdown sequences are discussed, and it is shown that multi-thruster operation and control is as simple as for a single thruster. Some system architectures require operation of multiple cathodes while they are electrically connected together. Four different methods to control the discharge current emitted by individual cathodes in this configuration are investigated, with cathode flow rate control appearing to be advantageous. Dual-parallel thruster operation with equal cathode current sharing at total powers up to 10 kW is presented.
