Seismic investigations - The Viking Mars Lander.

A lightweight three-component short period seismometer has been developed for preliminary seismic investigations of Mars. Because of weight and data-rate constraints the Viking seismic experiment is far from optimal but it should, at a minimum, provide information about the microseismic level and an upper bound on the seismicity of the planet. If Mars is tectonically active a start can be made on the problem of the internal structure, dynamics, and composition of the planet. A good distribution of modest sized Marsquakes will make it possible to determine if Mars has a core. The size of the core is related to the conditions of planetary formation.

Nonstationary ascent wind analysis.

A statistical approach for computing launch vehicle response to inflight winds is presented. In the response analysis the zonal component of the ascent wind velocity is modeled as a nonstationary random process. Model parameters are computed by processing available measured wind data. Pertinent pitch plane response statistics are computed and their value in constructing fatigue load spectra for a reusable launch vehicle is demonstrated. A method for using the response statistics to estimate structural reliability is also discussed. The accuracy and the cost saving potential of the probabilistic structural dynamics approach are assessed by performing comparisons with digital simulation results.

Analytical displacements and vibrations of cantilevered unsymmetric fiber composite laminates

A fiber composite flat cantilever plate that has symmetric and nonsymmetric laminate configurations is theoretically investigated to determine its static and dynamic structural response. The finite element analysis method used includes a unique triangular finite element developed at Lewis for the analysis of fiber composite airfoils. The various responses investigated include tip displacements, natural frequencies, and fundamental mode shapes. The results show that the displacements and the natural frequencies can be in considerable error for nonsymmetric laminate configurations if the membrane-bending coupling is not taken into account. Structural response results obtained from ten laminate configurations are presented in tabular forms and may be used as an aid in selecting laminate configurations for composite airfoils.

The results show that laminate configurations may be selected for a cantilever such that when the tip at the leading edge is loaded normal to the plane of the plate, the tip at the trailing edge can (1) deflect in the opposite direction, (2) deflect about the same, or (3) deflect more than the tip at the leading edge. This variation in response can be utilized to provide built-in structural damping to resist flutter.

Computer analysis of railcar vibrations

Computer models and techniques for calculating railcar vibrations are discussed along with criteria for vehicle ride optimization. The effect on vibration of car body structural dynamics, suspension system parameters, vehicle geometry, and wheel and rail excitation are presented. Ride quality vibration data collected on the state-of-the-art car and standard light rail vehicle is compared to computer predictions. The results show that computer analysis of the vehicle can be performed for relatively low cost in short periods of time. The analysis permits optimization of the design as it progresses and minimizes the possibility of excessive vibration on production vehicles.

ALARM: A highly efficient eigenvalue extraction routine for very large matrixes

A highly efficient computer program, called ALARM, for the determination of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large symmetric matrices (over 10,000 degrees of freedom), was described. As such, it is highly useful for analyzing complex finite element and finite difference idealizations encountered in structural dynamics and acoustic probelms. The program is based upon a scheme which reduces a large matrix to an equivalent tridiagonal one of much smaller size. The main strength of the algorithm lies in its ability to retain all the information required to obtain the eigenvalues at either end of the original matrix spectrum.

Interiors of the giant planets

Various investigations concerning Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn are discussed. Revisions in the Galilean satellite ephemerides led to a new interpretation of earth-based measurements of Jovian oblateness which agrees with Pioneer measurements. In the area of scintillation theory, a semi-qualitative result was obtained for spike profiles produced by finite stellar disks viewed through Kolmogorov turbulence. It was also possible to set limits on the systematic distortion of stellar occulation profiles by turbulence which minimize the systematic distortion problem. The position of Miranda was studied for the purpose of obtaining an accurate prediction of a possible stellar occultation by Miranda in 1977, following an occultation of the same star by Uranus. In addition, using thermodynamic calculations, a model was developed for the adiabiatic cooling of Jovian-type planets and an observational test of the model was proposed. The dynamic structure of Saturn's rings was also studied.

Full-scale crash test of a CH-47C helicopter

A full-scale crash test of a large troop/cargo carrying CH-47C helicopter was conducted at the Langley impact dynamics research facility. The crash test of this large helicopter was performed as part of a joint U.S. Army-NASA helicopter test program to provide dynamic structural and seat response data. The test, the procedures employed, the instrumentation, a general assessment of the resulting damage, and typical levels of accelerations experienced during the crash are reported. Various energy-absorbing seating systems for crew and troops were installed and instrumented to provide data for use in the development of design criteria for future aircraft. The crash conditions were selected to simulate known crash conditions and are representative of the 95th percentile accident environment for an autorotating helicopter. Visual examination of the crashed test specimen indicated irreparable damage to many of the structural components. The highest accelerations were recorded by the accelerometers located on the cabin floor in the aft section of the helicopter, directly above the primary impact location and on the floor of the cockpit above the secondary impact location(s).

A three-D circulation model study of the radiative-dynamic coupling within the stratosphere

The role of radiative transfer processes in the general circulation of the stratosphere was studied by comparing the thermal and dynamical structure of the stratosphere as simulated by two controlled numerical experiments performed with the aid of a spectral 3-dimensional quasi-geostrophic circulation model. In the first experiment, a detailed radiative transfer model is employed to treat the longwave radiative transfer in the stratosphere. In the second experiment, longwave radiative transfer is accounted for by employing the Newtonian cooling approximation. It is found that the exchange of longwave radiation between the troposphere and lower stratosphere has a net heating effect on the lower stratosphere. It is shown that this heating effect contributes partly to the maintenance of the warm high-latitude belt in the lower stratosphere during winter and spring seasons. The strong temperature dependence of the Newtonian cooling coefficient plays an important role in determining the zonal temperatures and has a significant influence on the transmissivity of stratosphere to propagating planetary scale waves.

Efficient numerical treatment of periodic systems with application to stability problems

Two efficient numerical methods for dealing with the stability of linear periodic systems are presented. Both methods combine the use of multivariable Floquet-Liapunov theory with an efficient numerical scheme for computing the transition matrix at the end of one period. The numerical properties of these methods are illustrated by applying them to the simple parametric excitation problem of a fixed end column. The practical value of these methods is shown by applying them to some helicopter rotor blade aeroelastic and structural dynamics problems. It is concluded that these methods are numerically efficient, general and practical for dealing with the stability of large periodic systems.
