Precise Pore Engineering of fcu–Type Y–MOFs for One–Step C 2 H 4 Purification from Ternary C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 Mixtures

The purification of C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 mixtures is of great significance in the chemical industry for C 2 H 4 production but remains a daunting task. Guided by powerful reticular chemistry principles, herein a systematic study is carried out to engineer pore dimensions and pore functionality of fcu-type Y-based metal–organic frameworks (Y-MOFs) through the construction of a series of eight new structures using linear dicarboxylate linkers with different length and functional groups. This study illustrates how delicate changes in pore size and pore surface chemistry can effectively influence the adsorption preference of C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 by the MOFs. Importantly, clear relations between pore size/pore surface polarity and C 2 adsorption selectivities of this series of MOFs are established. In particular, HIAM-326 built on a linker decorated with trifluoromethoxy group shows notably preferential adsorption of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 over C 2 H 4 , with balanced C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivities. Furthermore, this endows the compound with the capability of one-step purification of C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 ternary mixtures, which is validated by breakthrough measurements where high purity C 2 H 4 (99.9%+) can be obtained directly from the separation column. Its adsorption thermodynamics and underlying selective adsorption mechanisms are further revealed by ab initio calculations.

Nanocomposite Materials for Accelerating Decarbonization

Here, decarbonization is demonstrated by catalytic conversion of CO 2 to fuel by means of exposure of cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots-titania (TiO 2 ) nanophotocatalysts to sunlight illumination. The primary products resulted from this chemical reactions are methanol, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen after several hours of exposure to sun light. The overall CO 2 conversion efficiency of such quantum dot-titania nanostructures was compared with that of pure TiO 2 nanorod array photocatalyst. Data shows an improved conversion efficiency when composite quantum dot-titania nanostructures were used in comparison with titania nanophotocatalysts. It is postulated that this is due to the additional absorbance of visible light by the quantum dots and generation of additional charge separation at the CdSe-TiO 2 interfaces. The conversion efficiency of such an artificial photosynthesis process remains to be optimized for practical applications.

Internal calibration of transient kinetic data via machine learning

The temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor provides a vast amount of transient kinetic information that may be used to describe a variety of chemical features including residence time distributions, kinetic coefficients, number of active sites, reaction mechanism, etc. However, as with any measurement device, the TAP reactor signal is convoluted with noise and drift is common. In order to reduce the uncertainty of the kinetic measurement and any derived parameters or mechanisms, proper preprocessing must be performed prior to any advanced type of analysis. This preprocessing includes baseline correction, i.e., a shift in the voltage response, and calibration, i.e., a scaling of the flux response based on prior experiments. The traditional methodology of preprocessing requires significant user discretion and reliance on separate calibration experiments that may drift over time. Herein we use machine learning techniques combined with physical constraints to understand the noise and drift that is being generated within and between experiments for enhancement of the chemical kinetic signal. As such, the proposed methodology demonstrates clear benefits over the traditional preprocessing approach by eliminating the need for separate calibration experiments or heuristic input from the user.

Multi-arrival infrasound from meteoroids: Fragmentation signatures versus propagation effects in a fine-scale layered atmosphere

Infrasonic signatures of meteoroid fragmentation are frequently ambiguous: do multiple arrivals signify a complex breakup or merely the distorting effects of a layered atmosphere? Resolving this ambiguity is critical for accurate energy estimates and source reconstruction. In this study, we address this challenge by analyzing a unique regional dataset of well-constrained meteoroid events observed by the Southern Ontario Meteor Network and the co-located Elginfield Infrasound Array. We employ pseudo-differential parabolic equation (PPE) simulations to quantify how fine-scale gravity-wave structures in the stratosphere and lower thermosphere modify acoustic waveforms at ranges <300 km. Our modeling reveals that while fine-scale layering can stretch signals and generate diffuse oscillatory tails, it does not produce discrete, high-amplitude pulse splitting at ranges below ∼140 km. By applying these results to the rare multi-arrival event 20060305, we demonstrate that its distinct double arrival at 100 km range is inconsistent with atmospheric multipathing and provides definitive evidence of separate fragmentation episodes. These findings establish new diagnostic criteria for separating source physics from propagation artifacts, improving the reliability of infrasound as a monitoring tool for natural bolides, space debris re-entries, and catastrophic launch failures.

Highly tunable structure-by-design polymer brush membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration

Synthetic polymeric nanofiltration membrane processes offer an alternate low-energy option to energy-intensive distillation to fractionate similar size organic solvents for chemical, petroleum, food and biotechnology industries. Here, in this study, we synthesize and test a new class of structure-by-design hydrophilic polymeric brush membranes, that address the limitations of commercial polymer membranes, are tunable and exhibit commercially relevant filtration performance. Because these brush membranes are grafted by Single Electron Transfer-Living Radical Polymerization (SET-LRP) and replace statistically random phase inversion or interfacial polymerization used for synthesizing commercial polymer membranes, their porous structure can be remodeled by varying their morphology and chemistry. We graft hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) brush structures with short and long crosslinkers, demonstrate two competing phenomena - pore stiffening and opening - and obtain high selectivity at reasonable permeability for commercially relevant methanol/toluene separation. This new class of stable, tunable, and scalable membranes offers exciting opportunities to reduce energy for separation of organic solvents.

Energy Transfer in Aqueous Light Harvesting Antennae Based on Brush-like Inter-Conjugated Polyelectrolyte Complexes

Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) have the potential to serve as building blocks of artificial light-harvesting systems. This is primarily due to their delocalized electronic states and potential for hierarchical self-assembly. We showed previously that inter-CPE complexes composed of oppositely charged exciton-donor and exciton-acceptor CPEs displayed efficient electronic energy transfer. However, near ionic charge equivalence, complexed CPE chains become net-neutral and thus experience a precipitous drop in aqueous solubility. To increase the stability and to rationally manipulate the phase behavior of inter-CPE complexes, we synthesized a series of highly water-soluble exciton-donor CPEs composed of alternating ionic and polar nonionic fluorene monomers. The nonionic monomer contained oligo(ethyleneglycol) sidechains of variable length. We then formed exciton donor-acceptor complexes and investigated their relative energy transfer efficiencies in the presence of a fixed exciton-acceptor CPE. We find that, even when the polar nonionic sidechains become quite long (nine ethyleneglycol units), the energy transfer efficiency is hardly affected so long as the inter-CPE network retains a net polyelectrolyte charge. However, near the onset of spontaneous phase separation, we observe a clear influence of the length of the oligo(ethyleneglycol) sidechains on the photophysics of the complex. Our results have implications for the use of polyelectrolyte phase separation to produce aqueous light-harvesting soft materials.

Metastable Clusters and Competitive Solvation Tune Ion Pairing at Liquid Interfaces

The balance of hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions underlies emergent phenomena in complex multicomponent chemical systems. Here, we show that a supposedly ‘non–interacting’ nonpolar phase can be used to competitively solvate amphiphilic molecules at an oil/aqueous interface. This solvation, as probed by surface specific nonlinear spectroscopy and simulations, results in a molecularly thin corrugated phase boundary featuring metastable assemblies that alter the hydrogen bonding networks of water and the apparent ‘hard/soft’ descriptors used to describe ionic interactions. We show that competitive solvation enhances amphiphile mobility, opening up otherwise energetically inaccessible complexes that transiently interact with aqueous phase ions. These transient species impact ensemble binding affinities and may represent the molecular agents responsible for aspects of ionic transport and function. In conclusion, the result of this work highlights how seemingly unrelated nonpolar interactions feedback onto aqueous phase chemical phenomena, providing a pathway to tune phase separation and self-assembly to access new reaction pathways using interfaces for a range of chemical and biological systems.

Cryogenic spatial–temporal imaging of surface photocarrier dynamics in MAPbI 3 films at the single grain level

We use cryogenic spatial–temporal photoluminescence (PL) imaging measurements down to 10 K and with short-wavelength, 405 nm laser excitation to study surface charge generation, trapping, and recombination at single bright and dark grains as well as their boundaries in model methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) polycrystalline thin films. These salient conditions are shown to be critical for identifying both the detrimental and cooperative roles of grain microstructures where the dark grains serve as the PL quenching center, while the grain boundaries are largely benign and may promote electron–hole separation.

Ab initio free energies of liquid metal alloys: Application to the phase diagrams of Li-Na and K-Na

Comparison of free energies between different phases and different compositions underlies the prediction of alloy phase diagrams. To allow direct comparison, consistent reference points for the energies or enthalpies are required, and the entropy must be placed on an absolute scale, yielding absolute free energies. Here we derive absolute free energies of liquids from ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) by combining the directly simulated enthalpies with an entropy derived from simulated densities and pair correlation functions. Additionally, as an example of the power of this method we calculate the phase diagrams of two binary alkali metal alloys, Li-Na and K-Na, revealing a critical point and liquid-liquid phase separation in the former case, and a deep eutectic in the latter. Good agreement with experimental data demonstrates the power of this simple method.

Watson-Crick Base-Pairing Requirements for ssDNA Recognition and Processing in Replication-Initiating HUH Endonucleases

Replication-initiating HUH endonucleases (Reps) are sequence-specific nucleases that cleave and rejoin single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) during rolling-circle replication. These functions are mediated by covalent linkage of the Rep to its substrate post cleavage. Here, we describe the structures of the endonuclease domain from the Muscovy duck circovirus Rep in complex with its cognate ssDNA 10-mer with and without manganese in the active site. Structural and functional analyses demonstrate that divalent cations play both catalytic and structural roles in Reps by polarizing and positioning their substrate. Further structural comparisons highlight the importance of an intramolecular substrate Watson-Crick (WC) base pairing between the -4 and +1 positions. Subsequent kinetic and functional analyses demonstrate a functional dependency on WC base pairing between these positions regardless of the pair’s identity (i.e., A·T, T·A, G·C, or C·G), highlighting a structural specificity for substrate interaction. Finally, considering how well WC swaps were tolerated in vitro, we sought to determine to what extent the canonical -4T·+1A pairing is conserved in circular Rep-encoding single-stranded DNA viruses and found evidence of noncanonical pairings in a minority of these genomes. Altogether, our data suggest that substrate intramolecular WC base pairing is a universal requirement for separation and reunion of ssDNA in Reps.

Ka-Band ARM Zenith Radar Corrections (KAZRCOR, KAZRCFRCOR) Value-Added Products

The KAZRCOR Value -added Product (VAP) performs several corrections to the ingested KAZR moments and also creates a significant detection mask for each radar mode. The VAP computes gaseous attenuation as a function of time and radial distance from the radar antenna, based on ambient meteorological observations, and corrects observed reflectivities for that effect. KAZRCOR also dealiases mean Doppler velocities to correct velocities whose magnitudes exceed the radar’s Nyquist velocity. Input KAZR data fields are passed through into the KAZRCOR output files, in their native time and range coordinates. Complementary corrected reflectivity and velocity fields are provided, along with a mask of significant detections and a number of data quality flags. This report covers the KAZRCOR VAP as applied to the original KAZR radars and the upgraded KAZR2 radars. Currently there are two separate code bases for the different radar versions, but once KAZR and KAZR2 data formats are harmonized, only a single code base will be required.

Understanding Mechanisms of Selective Crystal Nucleation and Growth Using In Situ Electron Microscopy

Separation processes are essential for purifying and isolating critical materials, but are challenging due to the natural tendency of systems to mix. This project explores far-from-equilibrium separation methods using external electric and magnetic fields to drive selective nucleation and crystal growth. Using in situ electrochemical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we observed ion transport and crystallization behavior under applied electric fields. We found that ions migrate toward the working electrode, where nucleation preferentially occurs. These findings advance our understanding of non-equilibrium separation mechanisms and support the development of efficient, sustainable methods for extracting critical materials from unconventional domestic sources.

Methods and materials for determination of distribution coefficients for separation materials

Methods and materials for determining the affinity of separation materials for targeted species are described. A composite separation medium is described that combines a separation material such as an ion exchange material or a sorbent with an SERS substrate. Methods and materials can be utilized to determine the distribution coefficient of a species for a separation material after running a single separation protocol followed by examination of the separation material of the protocol according to SERS. Disclosed methods can be utilized to determine the affinity of existing separation materials for targeted species as well as to determine the affinity of newly engineered separation materials to characterize species.
