Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), Illinois Basin - Decatur Project (IBDP) Seismic Data, July 7, 2021. Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC) Phase III Data Sets. DOE Cooperative Agreement No. DE-FC26-05NT42588.

Seismic data from the IBDP, included primarily under folders: Active_Seismic_Data and Passive_Seismic_Events_Monitoring. The data included under IBDP_Located_Microseismic_Event_Data are a subset of microseismic (Passive Seismic Events Monitoring) data acquired throughout the project from pre-injection to shut-in. These data represent the “located” microseismic events and the two datasets, located in folders Downhole_Geophone_Data and Surface_Seismometer_Data, are correlated.

Delivering Contextual Knowledge and Critical Skills of Disruptive Technologies through Problem-Based Learning in Research Experiences for Undergraduates Setting

The recent development in transportation, such as energy-efficient and autonomous vehicles, defines a condition for the students in transportation engineering. Students in the field of transportation engineering should be ready upon their graduation with new knowledge and skills that are compatible with the need of the industry and sustainable engineering practices.During summers of 2018 and 2019, we developed and implemented an eight-week program to increase the knowledge and skills of students coming from multidisciplinary fields related to autonomous vehicles. Problem of “How much will platooning reduce fuel consumption and emissions per vehicle mile traveled?” was instrumentalized in subsequent activities to introduce the comprehensive knowledge structure of autonomous vehicles. The engineering concept of reducing the cost and sustainability was embedded in the leading research question that helped us to develop and implement activities on an overall knowledge structure in autonomous vehicles. The goal of using problem-based learning activities was not to encourage the students to focus on reaching the solution merely. We aimed to introduce the multidisciplinary knowledge and critical skills aspects of learning about disruptive technologies. In this paper, we will discuss how a multidisciplinary research approach was incorporated into a problem-based learning activity. The students were introduced the subjects related to math, physics, computer science, and biology as the integration of the knowledge structure of autonomous vehicles. We will also present the results on students’ use of critical skills such as machine learning and computer programming.

Improvised Electrsopinning Set Up for Thicker Ceramic Nanofiber Mat for High Power Targets

In high energy particle physics there is a demand for multi-MW high performance particle production targets. Nanofiber microstructure will have better performance than current solid targets in mitigating increased thermal tress waves, radiation damage. The objective is to fabricate thicker ceramic/metallic nano-fiber with high strength, thermal shock resistance using low cost electrospinning process.

Accelerating Learning with Set-Based Concurrent Engineering

The traditional design approach for product development is to develop a design based on customer requirements and technical knowledge, build the product according to the detail requirements provided, and then test the product to validate that it works as intended. The team typically starts by identifying a single design approach and spends their time validating a single design during testing. Design teams often encounter issues in the course of development with performance, manufacturability, interfaces and more. To compensate for test failures, teams often build in time into the schedule for additional design loopbacks. Further, when the loopbacks lead to change, the late changes are costly and risky, causing the team to focuses on "fixing the bare minimum" to meet cost and schedule expectations.

Ready, Set, Getting to Go: America's Nuclear Test Readiness Posture

In a geopolitical environment once again dominated by Great Power competition, the stakes of maintaining a credible nuclear deterrent also returned to the forefront of national security. Yet, as nearly thirty years have passed without the United States conducting a nuclear test, there exists considerable uncertainty on how quickly, or even if, the United States could resume nuclear testing—a key component of a credible deterrent. However, there remains a legal requirement, with origins in hard-earned Cold War lessons, for the nation to return to underground nuclear testing if called upon to do so. This paper provides an overview of nuclear testing, the nation’s current state of preparedness, and offers recommendations on how to improve its test readiness posture.

Full-Set Transformer Protection Barrier Manufacturing and Technology

This Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) project provided the design, fabrication, and testing a full-scale prototype “Corner Unit” protective barrier to provide seamless 360° perimetrical protection for highly expensive power generation or transmission infrastructure. The Corner Unit will seamlessly match up to the existing A-Frame design to form the 360° protection desired from industry. This TCF project also demonstrated how commercial industry could fabricate and deliver the full-scale barriers to remote locations.
