Search for invisible Higgs-boson decays in events with vector-boson fusion signatures using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton data recorded by the ATLAS experiment

A direct search for Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson fusion and subsequently decaying into invisible particles is reported. The analysis uses 139 fb -1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed numbers of events are found to be in agreement with the background expectation from Standard Model processes. For a scalar Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV and a Standard Model production cross section, an observed upper limit of 0.145 is placed on the branching fraction of its decay into invisible particles at 95% confidence level, with an expected limit of 0.103. These results are interpreted in the context of models where the Higgs boson acts as a portal to dark matter, and limits are set on the scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons. Invisible decays of additional scalar bosons with masses from 50 GeV to 2 TeV are also studied, and the derived upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction decrease with increasing mass from 1.0 pb for a scalar boson mass of 50 GeV to 0.1 pb at a mass of 2 TeV.

Scalar Co-SIMP dark matter: models and sensitivities

In this work, we present UV completions of the recently proposed number-changing Co-SIMP freeze-out mechanism. In contrast to the standard cannibalistic-type dark matter picture that occurs entirely in the dark sector, the 3 → 2 process setting the relic abundance in this case requires one Standard Model particle in the initial and final states. This prevents the dark sector from overheating and leads to rich experimental signatures. We generate the Co-SIMP interaction with a dark sector consisting of two scalars, with the mediator coupling to either nucleons or electrons. In either case, the dark matter candidate is naturally light : nucleophilic interactions favor the sub-GeV mass range and leptophilic interactions favor the sub-MeV mass range. Viable thermal models in these lighter mass regimes are particularly intriguing to study at this time, as new developments in low-threshold detector technologies will begin probing this region of parameter space. While particles in the sub-MeV regime can potentially impact light element formation and CMB decoupling, we show that a late-time phase transition opens up large fractions of parameter space. These thermal light dark matter models can instead be tested with dedicated experiments. We discuss the viable parameter space in each scenario in light of the current sensitivity of various experimental probes and projected future reach.

Measurement of light-by-light scattering and the Breit-Wheeler process, and search for axion-like particles in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of light-by-light scattering (LbL, γγ → γγ) and the Breit-Wheeler process (BW, γγ → e + e − ) are reported in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb −1 , was collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2018. Events with an exclusively produced γγ or e + e − pair with invariant masses m γγ,ee > 5 GeV, along with other fiducial criteria, are selected. The measured BW fiducial production cross section, σ fid (γγ → e + e − ) = 263.5 ± 1.8(stat) ± 17.8(syst) μb, as well as the differential distributions for various kinematic observables, are in agreement with leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions complemented with final-state photon radiation. The measured differential BW cross sections allow discrimination between different theoretical descriptions of the photon flux of the lead ion. In the LbL final state, 26 exclusive diphoton candidate events are observed compared with 12.0 ± 2.9 expected for the background. Combined with previous results, the observed significance of the LbL signal with respect to the background-only hypothesis is above five standard deviations. The measured fiducial LbL scattering cross section, σ fid (γγ → γγ) = 107 ± 24(stat) ± 13(syst) nb, is in agreement with next- to-leading-order predictions. Limits on the production of axion-like particles coupled to photons are set over the mass range 5–100 GeV, including the most stringent limits to date in the range of 5–10 GeV.

Measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.36$ TeV

The inclusive cross section for top quark pair ($\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$) production in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions is reported for the first time at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.36 TeV. The analysis uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.58 nb −1 collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2023. The $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ production cross section, ${\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}}={3.42}_{-0.51}^{+0.54}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.43}^{+0.50}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)$ μb, is measured in dilepton final states using a fit to a multivariate discriminator that combines the decay electron and muon kinematic properties with the multiplicity of bottom quark jets. The result is consistent with perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy employing several nuclear parton distribution functions. In addition, the Drell–Yan production cross section (σ DY ) for dilepton masses above 10 GeV and the ratio of $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ to DY cross sections $\left({R}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}/\mathrm{DY}}\right)$ are found to be compatible with the NNLO predictions. The observables ${\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}}$, σ DY , and ${R}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}/\mathrm{DY}}$ are measured separately for central and semicentral PbPb collisions to investigate for the first time the dependence of top quark production on the collision impact parameter.

J/ψ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 8.16 TeV

Inclusive J /ψ yields and average transverse momenta in p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 8 . 16 TeV are measured as a function of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density with ALICE. The J /ψ mesons are reconstructed at forward (2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53) and backward ( - 4 . 46 < y cms < - 2 . 96) center-of-mass rapidity in their dimuon decay channel while the charged-particle pseudorapidity density is measured around midrapidity. The J /ψ yields at forward and backward rapidity normalized to their respective average values increase with the normalized charged-particle pseudorapidity density, the former showing a weaker increase than the latter. The normalized average transverse momenta at forward and backward rapidity manifest a steady increase from low to high charged-particle pseudorapidity density with a saturation beyond the average value.

Transverse momentum distributions of heavy hadrons and polarized heavy quarks

We initiate the study of transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions for heavy quarks, demonstrate their factorization in terms of novel nonperturbative matrix elements in heavy-quark effective theory (HQET), and prove new TMD sum rules that arise from heavy-quark spin symmetry. We discuss the phenomenology of heavy-quark TMD FFs at B factories and find that the Collins effect, in contrast to claims in the literature, is not parametrically suppressed by the heavy-quark mass. We further calculate all TMD parton distribution functions for the production of heavy quarks from polarized gluons within the nucleon and use our results to demonstrate the potential of the future EIC to resolve TMD heavy-quark fragmentation in semi-inclusive DIS, complementing the planned EIC program to use heavy quarks as probes of gluon distributions.

Axion detection via superfluid 3 He ferromagnetic phase and quantum measurement techniques

We propose to use the nuclear spin excitation in the ferromagnetic A 1 phase of the superfluid 3 He for the axion dark matter detection. This approach is striking in that it is sensitive to the axion-nucleon coupling, one of the most important features of the QCD axion introduced to solve the strong CP problem. We review a quantum mechanical description of the nuclear spin excitation and apply it to the estimation of the axion-induced spin excitation rate. We also describe a possible detection method of the spin excitation in detail and show that the combination of the squeezing of the final state with the Josephson parametric amplifier and the homodyne measurement can enhance the sensitivity. It turns out that this approach gives good sensitivity to the axion dark matter with the mass of $\mathcal{O}$(1) μeV depending on the size of the external magnetic field. We estimate the parameters of experimental setups, e.g., the detector volume and the amplitude of squeezing, required to reach the QCD axion parameter space.

Leptogenesis in automatic Nelson-Barr models

In this study, we numerically show that automatic Nelson-Barr models with new chiral fermions can simultaneously solve the strong CP problem and generate the observed baryon asymmetry via high-scale leptogenesis. In these models, all CP violation arises from a single spontaneous symmetry-breaking scale, linking the origin of quark and lepton CP phases. Using conservative assumptions and minimal dynamics, we identify a viable parameter window where successful leptogenesis occurs without spoiling the quality of the strong CP solution. Models with vector-like fermions face tension within this leptogenesis scenario. A key prediction is a correlation between the baryon asymmetry and the induced QCD vacuum angle shift. Remarkably, we find that the majority of the available parameter space is within reach of current and future nucleon EDM experiments.

Master integrals for two-loop QCD corrections to quark quasi PDFs

We compute the master integrals for the two-loop QCD corrections to quark quasi parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the large momentum effective theory (LaMET). With a proper canonical basis, we derive the analytical results for the three families of master integrals using the method of differential equations. The final expressions for the master integrals are given in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. These results allow us to extract the two-loop short-distant matching coefficients between quark quasi and lightcone PDFs in LaMET, and are valuable to improve the determination of the nucleon PDFs from first principles in future.

Phenomenology of magnetic black holes with electroweak-symmetric coronas

Magnetically charged black holes (MBHs) are interesting solutions of the Standard Model and general relativity. They may possess a “hairy” electroweak-symmetric corona outside the event horizon, which speeds up their Hawking radiation and leads them to become nearly extremal on short timescales. Their masses could range from the Planck scale up to the Earth mass. We study various methods to search for primordially produced MBHs and estimate the upper limits on their abundance. We revisit the Parker bound on magnetic monopoles and show that it can be extended by several orders of magnitude using the large-scale coherent magnetic fields in Andromeda. This sets a mass-independent constraint that MBHs have an abundance less than 4 × 10 -4 times that of dark matter. MBHs can also be captured in astrophysical systems like the Sun, the Earth, or neutron stars. There, they can become non-extremal either from merging with an oppositely charged MBH or absorbing nucleons. The resulting Hawking radiation can be detected as neutrinos, photons, or heat. High-energy neutrino searches in particular can set a stronger bound than the Parker bound for some MBH masses, down to an abundance 10 -7 of dark matter.

Jupiter missions as probes of dark matter

Jupiter, the fascinating largest planet in the solar system, has been visited by nine spacecraft, which have collected a significant amount of data about Jovian properties. In this paper, we show that one type of the in situ measurements on the relativistic electron fluxes could be used to probe dark matter (DM) and dark mediator between the dark sector and our visible world. Jupiter, with its immense weight and cool core, could be an ideal capturer for DM with masses around the GeV scale. The captured DM particles could annihilate into long-lived dark mediators such as dark photons, which subsequently decay into electrons and positrons outside Jupiter. The charged particles, trapped by the Jovian magnetic field, have been measured in Jupiter missions such as the Galileo probe and the Juno orbiter. We use the data available to set upper bounds on the cross section of DM scattering off nucleons, σ χn , for dark mediators with lifetime of order $O$ (0.1–1) s. The results show that data from Jupiter missions already probe regions in the parameter space un- or under-explored by existing DM searches, e.g., constrain σχn of order (10 –41 –10 –39 ) cm 2 for 1 GeV DM dominantly annihilating into e + e – through dark mediators. This study serves as an example and an initial step to explore the full physics potential of the large planetary datasets from Jupiter missions. We also outline several other potential directions related to secondary products of electrons, positron signals and solar axions.

Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt charmonia in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $= 5.02 TeV

The second-order (v 2 ) and third-order (v 3 ) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/ψ, as well as prompt ψ(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt {^{S}NN}$ = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb –1 recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. The v 2 and v 3 coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measured v 2 values for prompt J/ψ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ψ mesons. The prompt J/ψ v 2 values at high p T are found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ meson v 3 and prompt ψ(2S) v 2 and v 3 values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Forward production of prompt neutrinos from charm in the atmosphere and at high energy colliders

The high-energy atmospheric neutrino flux is dominated by neutrinos from the decays of charmed hadrons produced in the forward direction by cosmic ray interactions with air nuclei. We evaluate the charm contributions to the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux as a function of the center-of-mass energy √s of the hadronic collision and of the center-of-mass rapidity y of the produced charm hadron. Uncertainties associated with parton distribution functions are also evaluated as a function of y. We find that the y coverage of LHCb for forward heavy-flavour production, complemented by the angular coverage of present and future forward neutrino experiments at the LHC, bracket the most interesting y regions for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux. At √s = 14 TeV foreseen for the HL-LHC phase, nucleon collisions in air contribute to the prompt neutrino flux prominently below E ν ~ 10 7 GeV. Measurements of forward charm and/or forward neutrinos produced in hadron collisions up to √s = 100 TeV, which might become possible at the FCC, are relevant for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux up to E ν = 10 8 GeV and beyond.

The continuum and leading twist limits of parton distribution functions in lattice QCD

In this study, we present continuum limit results for the unpolarized parton distribution function of the nucleon computed in lattice QCD. This study is the first continuum limit using the pseudo-PDF approach with Short Distance Factorization for factorizing lattice QCD calculable matrix elements. Our findings are also compared with the pertinent phenomenological determinations. Inter alia, we are employing the summation Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (sGEVP) technique in order to optimize our control over the excited state contamination which can be one of the most serious systematic errors in this type of calculations. A crucial novel ingredient of our analysis is the parameterization of systematic errors using Jacobi polynomials to characterize and remove both lattice spacing and higher twist contaminations, as well as the leading twist distribution. This method can be expanded in further studies to remove all other systematic errors.

A low-energy perspective on the minimal left-right symmetric model

We perform a global analysis of the low-energy phenomenology of the minimal left-right symmetric model (mLRSM) with parity symmetry. We match the mLRSM to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory Lagrangian at the left-right-symmetry breaking scale and perform a comprehensive fit to low-energy data including mesonic, neutron, and nuclear β -decay processes, Δ F = 1 and Δ F = 2 CP-even and -odd processes in the bottom and strange sectors, and electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons, nuclei, and atoms. We fit the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa and mLRSM parameters simultaneously and determine a lower bound on the mass of the right-handed W R boson. In models where a Peccei-Quinn mechanism provides a solution to the strong CP problem, we obtain $ {M}_{W_R} $ ≳ 5 . 5 TeV at 95% C.L. which can be significantly improved with next-generation EDM experiments. In the P -symmetric mLRSM without a Peccei-Quinn mechanism we obtain a more stringent constraint $ {M}_{W_R} $ ≳ 17 TeV at 95% C.L., which is difficult to improve with low-energy measurements alone. In all cases, the additional scalar fields of the mLRSM are required to be a few times heavier than the right-handed gauge bosons. We consider a recent discrepancy in tests of first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. We find that, while TeV-scale W R bosons can alleviate some of the tension found in the V ud,us determinations, a solution to the discrepancy is disfavored when taking into account other low-energy observables within the mLRSM.

Towards high-precision parton distributions from lattice QCD via distillation

We apply the Distillation spatial smearing program to the extraction of the unpolarized isovector valence PDF of the nucleon. The improved volume sampling and control of excited-states afforded by distillation leads to a dramatically improved determination of the requisite Ioffe-time Pseudo-distribution (pITD). The impact of higher-twist effects is subsequently explored by extending the Wilson line length present in our non-local operators to one half the spatial extent of the lattice ensemble considered. The valence PDF is extracted by analyzing both the matched Ioffe-time Distribution (ITD), as well as a direct matching of the pITD to the PDF. Through development of a novel prescription to obtain the PDF from the pITD, we establish a concerning deviation of the pITD from the expected DGLAP evolution of the pseudo-PDF. The presence of DGLAP evolution is observed once more following introduction of a discretization term into the PDF extractions. Observance and correction of this discrepancy further highlights the utility of distillation in such structure studies.

A new approach to semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering with QED and QCD factorization

We present the details of a new factorized approach to semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering which treats QED and QCD radiation on equal footing, and provides a systematically improvable approximation to the extraction of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. We demonstrate how the QED contributions can be well approximated by collinear factorization, and illustrate the application of the factorized approach to QED radiation in inclusive scattering. For semi-inclusive processes, we show how radiation effects prevent a well-defined “photon-nucleon” frame, forcing one to use a two-step process to account for the radiation. We illustrate the utility of the new method by explicit application to the spin-dependent Sivers and Collins asymmetries.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV

The production cross-sections of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb -1 , collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y, and separately for J/ψ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0 < p T < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5 are σ prompt J/Ψ = 8.154 ± 0.010 ± 0.283 μb, σnonprompt J/Ψ = 0.820 ± 0.003 ± 0.034 μb, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and 13 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.
