A direct-inverse transonic wing-design method in curvilinear coordinates including viscous-interaction

Progress in the direct-inverse wing design method in curvilinear coordinates has been made. A spanwise oscillation problem and proposed remedies are discussed. Test cases are presented which reveal the approximate limits on the wing's aspect ratio and leading edge wing sweep angle for a successful design, and which show the significance of spanwise grid skewness, grid refinement, viscous interaction, the initial airfoil section and Mach number-pressure distribution compatibility on the final design. Furthermore, preliminary results are shown which indicate that it is feasible to successfully design a region of the wing which begins aft of the leading edge and terminates prior to the trailing edge.

Mean inversion strength of the convective boundary layer over the ocean

The present consideration of an equilibrium energy budget for the oceanic convective boundary layer indicates that the mean inversion strength in balance with a radiatively driven subsidence is of the order of 9 K, in keeping with the widely-observed value most recently reported by Kuo and Schubert (1988). Calculations are presented for the convective boundary layer's potential temperature budget.

Superconducting gravity gradiometer and a test of inverse square law

The equivalence principle prohibits the distinction of gravity from acceleration by a local measurement. However, by making a differential measurement of acceleration over a baseline, platform accelerations can be cancelled and gravity gradients detected. In an in-line superconducting gravity gradiometer, this differencing is accomplished with two spring-mass accelerometers in which the proof masses are confined to motion in a single degree of freedom and are coupled together by superconducting circuits. Platform motions appear as common mode accelerations and are cancelled by adjusting the ratio of two persistent currents in the sensing circuit. The sensing circuit is connected to a commercial SQUID amplifier to sense changes in the persistent currents generated by differential accelerations, i.e., gravity gradients. A three-axis gravity gradiometer is formed by mounting six accelerometers on the faces of a precision cube, with the accelerometers on opposite faces of the cube forming one of three in-line gradiometers. A dedicated satellite mission for mapping the earth's gravity field is an important one. Additional scientific goals are a test of the inverse square law to a part in 10(exp 10) at 100 km, and a test of the Lense-Thirring effect by detecting the relativistic gravity magnetic terms in the gravity gradient tensor for the earth.

Computational neural learning formalisms for manipulator inverse kinematics

An efficient, adaptive neural learning paradigm for addressing the inverse kinematics of redundant manipulators is presented. The proposed methodology exploits the infinite local stability of terminal attractors - a new class of mathematical constructs which provide unique information processing capabilities to artificial neural systems. For robotic applications, synaptic elements of such networks can rapidly acquire the kinematic invariances embedded within the presented samples. Subsequently, joint-space configurations, required to follow arbitrary end-effector trajectories, can readily be computed. In a significant departure from prior neuromorphic learning algorithms, this methodology provides mechanisms for incorporating an in-training skew to handle kinematics and environmental constraints.

Simultaneous stochastic inversion for geomagnetic main field and secular variation. II - 1820-1980

With the aim of producing readable time-dependent maps of the geomagnetic field at the core-mantle boundary, the method of simultaneous stochastic inversion for the geomagnetic main field and secular variation, described by Bloxham (1987), was applied to survey data from the period 1820-1980 to yield two time-dependent geomagnetic-field models, one for the period 1900-1980 and the other for 1820-1900. Particular consideration was given to the effect of crustal fields on observations. It was found that the existing methods of accounting for these fields as sources of random noise are inadequate in two circumstances: (1) when sequences of measurements are made at one particular site, and (2) for measurements made at satellite altitude. The present model shows many of the features in the earth's magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary described by Bloxham and Gubbins (1985) and supports many of their earlier conclusions.

A Strassen-Newton algorithm for high-speed parallelizable matrix inversion

Techniques are described for computing matrix inverses by algorithms that are highly suited to massively parallel computation. The techniques are based on an algorithm suggested by Strassen (1969). Variations of this scheme use matrix Newton iterations and other methods to improve the numerical stability while at the same time preserving a very high level of parallelism. One-processor Cray-2 implementations of these schemes range from one that is up to 55 percent faster than a conventional library routine to one that is slower than a library routine but achieves excellent numerical stability. The problem of computing the solution to a single set of linear equations is discussed, and it is shown that this problem can also be solved efficiently using these techniques.

Flare heating and ionization of the low solar chromosphere. I - Inversion methods for Mg I 4571 and 5173

Various methods of inverting solar Mg I 4571 and 5173 spectral line observations are examined to find the best method of using these lines to calculate the vertical temperature and electron density structure around the temperature minimum region. Following a perturbation analysis by Mein (1971), a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is obtained which can be inverted to yield these temperature and density structures as a function of time. Several inversion methods are tested and compared. The methods are used to test data as well as to a subset of observations of these absorption lines taken on February 3, 1986 before and during a solar flare. A small but significant increase is found in the temperature and a relatively large increase in the electron density during this flare. The observations are inconsistent with heating and ionization by an intense beam of electrons and with ionization by UV photoionization of Si I.

Inverse dynamics of adaptive space cranes with tip point adjustment

The 'space crane', which resembles a conventional solid-link robot but employs truss sections in place of links and length-adjustable bars in place of torque-generating motors, is presently characterized by means of two different inverse-dynamics schemes. While in the first of these the nominal angles are maintained between the links constituting the crane, the second scheme adjusts the nominal angles as a function of time in order to always maintain the tip of the crane along the desired (nomical) trajectory. Attention is given to the second scheme, and to a tip-adjustment method which keeps the high frequency flexibility vibration within limits and ensures numerical stability.

Fourier analysis and signal processing by use of the Moebius inversion formula

A novel Fourier technique for digital signal processing is developed. This approach to Fourier analysis is based on the number-theoretic method of the Moebius inversion of series. The Fourier transform method developed is shown also to yield the convolution of two signals. A computer simulation shows that this method for finding Fourier coefficients is quite suitable for digital signal processing. It competes with the classical FFT (fast Fourier transform) approach in terms of accuracy, complexity, and speed.

Observation of a strong inverse temperature dependence for the opacity of atmospheric water vapor in the mm continuum near 280 GHz

Results are presented of the field measurements of atmospheric opacity at 278 GHz (9.3/cm) conducted at the McMurdo Station (Antarctica) during the austral springs of 1986 and 1987, in conjunction with balloon measurements of water vapor profile and total column density, showing a strong inverse temperature dependence when normalized to precipitable water vapor. The value of measured opacity per mm of precipitable water vapor (PWV) is roughly two times greater at -35 C than at -10 C and three times greater than measurements at +25 C reported by Zammit and Ade (1981). Various theories proposed to explain excess absorption in continuum regions are reviewed.

Solution of inverse problem of fuzzy relational equation by using perceptron model

A Max-Min fuzzy system can be regarded as a network of max and min operational elements. Thus, the inverse problem of a fuzzy relational equation is interpreted as an input estimation problem from output values in the corresponding network. An approximate network model of a fuzzy relational system is proposed. An algorithm for obtaining an approximate solution of the system is presented for using a neural network technique.

An inverse dynamic tracking control for bracing a flexible manipulator

The goal of this research is to produce a braced manipulator that is flexible. In order to brace the manipulator against a surface, a tip position tracking control becomes essential to avoid large impacts on contact, and to control the force after contact. If we consider the characteristics of the flexible manipulator, the control task may be characterized as a tracking control of a nonlinear, noncolocated, nonminimum-phase system with uncertainties. First, the author introduces the staged positioning concept and provides a conceptual background for the bracing strategy. Second, a single link flexible manipulator is modeled by the assumed-modes method, and the validity of the model is verified with experimental results. Third, a time domain inverse dynamic method is proposed to cancel out the nonminimum-phase positive zeros which cannot be cancelled by feedback controls. Fourth, a tracking controller is designed to control the end point of a flexible manipulator without any overshoot or residual vibrations. Its perfect tracking or asymptotic tracking performance is analyzed and discussed for zero and non-zero initial condition cases. Finally, impact phenomena are investigated, and contact force control of a flexible bracing manipulator is presented to set up a control scenerio for such a manipulator. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a single link flexible manipulator, and analyzed and evaluated with simulations and experiments.
