Ultrasonic scanning system for imaging flaw growth in composites

A system for measuring and visually representing damage in composite specimens while they are being loaded was demonstrated. It uses a hobbiest grade microcomputer system to control data taking and image processing. The system scans operator selected regions of the specimen while it is under load in a tensile test machine and measures internal damage by the attenuation of a 2.5 MHz ultrasonic beam passed through the specimen. The microcomputer dynamically controls the position of ultrasonic transducers mounted on a two axis motor driven carriage. As many as 65,536 samples can be taken and filed on a floppy disk system in less than four minutes.

Earth Resources Laboratory Applications Software (ELAS)

Implementation of the Earth Resources Laboratory applications software (ELAS) system is described. A Data General Eclipse model S/230 minicomputer is employed for image processing of LANDSAT data. A 16 bit word is used, and the smaller addressability necessitates reducing some of the array sizes. All INTEGER*4 variables were changed to REAL. Interfacing the ELAS software to Data General's FORTRAN callable runtime routines required rewriting the input/output routines and the subroutines that bring in the various overlays. Overlay relinking is required when a change is made in resident routines. The ELAS system and its user documentation is evaluated.

Radiometric performance of the Voyager cameras

The Voyager Imaging Experiment provided high-quality data of Jupiter and the Galilean satellites with the two flyby trajectories in March and July of 1979. Moderately accurate radiometric measurements have been made using these data. This paper evaluates the radiometric results and describes the inflight and ground geometric and radiometric correction factors. The radiometric quantities of intensity I and geometric albedo I/F are derived, and scaling factors for each of the filters are tabulated for correcting the 'calibrated' data from the Image Processing Laboratory at JPL. In addition, the key characteristics of both Voyager I and Voyager 2 cameras are tabulated.

An operational software system for geosynchronous satellite navigation

A software system has been designed to provide navigation parameters during the VAS experiment of the GOES-4 mission along with annotation data for near real time image registration. The four functional subsystems of the software system, Data Base Management, Image Processing, Navigation, and Output, and the principal hardware components are characterized. The ability of the system to fulfil its two principal objectives is verified by results obtained from processing actual SMS-2 satellite imagery.

NASA's oceanic remote sensing plans for the 1980's

An overview of NASA's oceanic remote sensing plans is given, focusing on an attempt to obtain time-varying three-dimensional structure data of the ocean. The first mission is the National Oceanic Satellite System, which is designed to perform an operational demonstration of global sea surface monitoring for NOAA and DOD. TOPEX is the second mission, and it is designed to observe the surface topography of the ocean in order to determine the absolute geostrophic velocity field of the ocean. The third mission, Ocean SAR, has not been defined, but the areas of physical interpretation of oceanic imagery, selection of optimal frequency and depression angle for specific observational needs, and real-time image processing must be considered. It is hoped that oceanic satellite missions will be optimally exploited by the end of the decade.

Gates to Gregg High Voltage Transmission Line Study

The usefulness of LANDSAT data in the planning of transmission line routes was assessed. LANDSAT digital data and image processing techniques, specifically a multi-date supervised classification aproach, were used to develop a land cover map for an agricultural area near Fresno, California. Twenty-six land cover classes were identified, of which twenty classes were agricultural crops. High classification accuracies (greater than 80%) were attained for several classes, including cotton, grain, and vineyards. The primary products generated were 1:24,000, 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale maps of the classification and acreage summaries for all land cover classes within four alternate transmission line routes.

Model deformation system

The development of a system to measure model deflections encountered in the National Transonic Facility is discussed. The goal is to be able to measure peak deflections of up to 3 in. with accuracies to within 0.0025 in. over an area 1 m square as the model pitches through an included angle of 30 deg. Stereophotogrammetric techniques are being implemented, with the initial system being an extension of standard techniques. A second system, which will be all electronic, is under development. Both techniques require targets to be strategically placed on the model. Active targets are being developed for location in the model in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio and to approximate a point source. Image processing techniques and stereophotogrammetric data reduction programs are being implemented to perform the data reduction tasks.

Application of LANDSAT data to monitor land reclamation progress in Belmont County, Ohio

Strip and contour mining techniques are reviewed as well as some studies conducted to determine the applicability of LANDSAT and associated digital image processing techniques to the surficial problems associated with mining operations. A nontraditional unsupervised classification approach to multispectral data is considered which renders increased classification separability in land cover analysis of surface mined areas. The approach also reduces the dimensionality of the data and requires only minimal analytical skills in digital data processing.

Experimental land observing data system feasibility study

An end-to-end data system to support a Shuttle-based Multispectral Linear Array (MLA) mission in the mid-1980's was defined. The experimental Land Observing System (ELOS) is discussed. A ground system that exploits extensive assets from the LANDSAT-D Program to effectively meet the objectives of the ELOS Mission was defined. The goal of 10 meter pixel precision, the variety of data acquisition capabilities, and the use of Shuttle are key to the mission requirements, Ground mission management functions are met through the use of GSFC's Multi-Satellite Operations Control Center (MSOCC). The MLA Image Generation Facility (MIGF) combines major hardware elements from the Applications Development Data System (ADDS) facility and LANDSAT Assessment System (LAS) with a special purpose MLA interface unit. LANDSAT-D image processing techniques, adapted to MLA characteristics, form the basis for the use of existing software and the definition of new software required.
