A mathematical model for the doubly fed wound rotor generator

A mathematical analysis of a doubly-fed wound rotor machine used as a constant frequency generator is presented. The purpose of this analysis is to derive a consistent set of circuit equations which produce constant stator frequency and constant stator voltage. Starting with instantaneous circuit equations, the necessary rotor voltages and currents are derived. The model, thus obtained, is assumed to be valid, since the resulting relationships between mechanical power and active volt-amperes agrees with the results of others. In addition, the model allows for a new interpretation of the power flow in the doubly-fed generator.

Control of large wind turbine generators connected to utility networks

This is an investigation of the control requirements for variable pitch wind turbine generators connected to electric power systems. The requirements include operation in very small as well as very large power systems. Control systems are developed for wind turbines with synchronous, induction, and doubly fed generators. Simulation results are presented. It is shown how wind turbines and power system controls can be integrated. A clear distinction is made between fast control of turbine torque, which is a peculiarity of wind turbines, and slow control of electric power, which is a traditional power system requirement.

Generation of orthogonal grids by boundary grid relaxation

Two elliptic grid generation schemes that yield orthogonal grids are presented (FGBR and UBGR). With the UBGR scheme, the grid points on the flow boundaries are automatically determined by the algorithm, while the FBGR scheme at most one half of the boundary grid points may be prespecified and the remainder of boundary grid points are determined automatically. Numerical examples show their capability of easy stretching, clustering and shock fitting while maintaining orthogonality of grid. The present method can be implemented into existing elliptic grid generation programs with relatively minor modifications.

Mesh generation by conformal and quasiconformal mappings

It is pointed out that many recent advances in the finite-difference solution of elliptic equations have been limited to regions whose boundary contours coincide with coordinate lines of the Cartesian coordinate system. The reason for this is related to the fact that in the case of an arbitrary curvilinear coordinate system the original equation becomes much more complex. However, there is no added complexity if an orthogonal coordinate system is generated from a conformal mapping. In the present investigation, a finite difference method developed for the construction of conformal mappings has been generalized to construct quasi-conformal mappings. It is expected that the use of more sophisticated numerical algorithms could lead to improvements in both speed and accuracy. Quasi-conformal mappings have applications not only in the solution of elliptic equations but also in other areas such as orthogonal mesh generation on surfaces and the solution of certain fluid flow problems.

Measurements on a shock wave generated by a solar flare

Shock waves generated by intense solar flares may be driven by a large amount of ejected mass, about 5 x 10 to the 16th g, and the total energy involved may be of the order of 10 to the 32nd erg. The shocks may have initial velocities of the order of 2,000 km/s and, in their exodus through the corona, may be accompanied by fast-moving optical transients, the emission of highly characteristic radio signatures and the acceleration of particles to quasi-relativistic velocities. Here, a review is presented of data on a high-velocity shock generated by a flare on 18 August 1979, 1400 UT, and comments are provided on some previously deduced velocities for the shock. Attention is given to a model, based on current computer programs to account for the overall characteristics of the shock as it propagated through the corona and the interplanetary plasma.

SYMBOD - A computer program for the automatic generation of symbolic equations of motion for systems of hinge-connected rigid bodies

A computer program is described that can automatically generate symbolic equations of motion for systems of hinge-connected rigid bodies with tree topologies. The dynamical formulation underlying the program is outlined, and examples are given to show how a symbolic language is used to code the formulation. The program is applied to generate the equations of motion for a four-body model of the Galileo spacecraft. The resulting equations are shown to be a factor of three faster in execution time than conventional numerical subroutines.

Transient flow analysis of the AEDC/HPDE MHD generator

A hybrid Lax-Wendroff/Method of Characteristics computer code has been developed for numerical simulation of flow transients associated with the operation of MHD generator facilities. The code employs the shock-fitting method, with an Eulerian formulation of the basic conservation equations and explicit tracking of shock waves. Pressure, temperature, and velocity are used as primary integration variables to simplify interfacing of the code with real-gas thermodynamic and transport property tables. Application of the code to the simulation of selected transients for the AEDC/HPDE MHD generator produced results that are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Nearfield observations of tones generated from supersonic jet flows

The physics of discrete tone generation (screech) from improperly expanded supersonic jets have been investigated experimentally. Both nearfield acoustic survey and phase-averaged schlieren flow visualization were conducted. The dominant mode of flow oscillation that occurred during intense screech and its coupling with the internal shock structure and external sound field were established. Deductions made from the observed coupling mechanism revealed the importance of Helmholtz number and shock cell spacing in the maintenance of screech. Measured amplitude variation of screech are compared with computed amplitude variation of the dominant instability. The results suggest that jet instability plays a direct role in the generation of screech.

Computer modeling of thermoelectric generator performance

Features of the DEGRA 2 computer code for simulating the operations of a spacecraft thermoelectric generator are described. The code models the physical processes occurring during operation. Input variables include the thermoelectric couple geometry and composition, the thermoelectric materials' properties, interfaces and insulation in the thermopile, the heat source characteristics, mission trajectory, and generator electrical requirements. Time steps can be specified and sublimation of the leg and hot shoe is accounted for, as are shorts between legs. Calculations are performed for conduction, Peltier, Thomson, and Joule heating, the cold junction can be adjusted for solar radition, and the legs of the thermoelectric couple are segmented to enhance the approximation accuracy. A trial run covering 18 couple modules yielded data with 0.3% accuracy with regard to test data. The model has been successful with selenide materials, SiGe, and SiN4, with output of all critical operational variables.

Coordinate generation with precise controls over mesh properties

Powerful local controls have been developed for mesh generation with the class of multisurface coordinate transformations. The controls come from local piecewise linear interpolants, and the resulting coordinates have continuous first derivatives. At the boundaries, the mesh controls provide the capability of joining distinct coordinate systems together with continuous derivatives. Away from boundaries, a local region can be given a particular mesh form to model internal objects or to simplify a problem. Applications of the controls are illustrated with a sequence of two-dimensional examples. For simplicity, each is generated about a NACA0012 airfoil which is of unit length and with leading edge pointed in a negative x-direction.

Aluminum/ammonia heat pipe gas generation and long term system impact for the Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera

In the Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC) project, eight heat pipes (HPs) are used to remove heat from the camera's inner electronic sensors to the spacecraft's outer, cold radiator surface. For proper device functioning and maximization of the signal-to-noise ratios, the Charge Coupled Devices (CCD's) must be maintained at -95 C or lower. Thermoelectric coolers (TEC's) cool the CCD's, and heat pipes deliver each TEC's nominal six to eight watts of heat to the space radiator, which reaches an equilibrium temperature between -15 C to -70 C. An initial problem was related to the difficulty to produce gas-free aluminum/ammonia heat pipes. An investigation was, therefore, conducted to determine the cause of the gas generation and the impact of this gas on CCD cooling. In order to study the effect of gas slugs in the WFPC system, a separate HP was made. Attention is given to fabrication, testing, and heat pipe gas generation chemistry studies.

Non-planar MHD model for solar flare-generated disturbances in the heliospheric equatorial plane

An analysis, with a representative (canonical) example of solar-flare-generated equatorial disturbances, is made for the temporal and spatial changes in the solar wind plasma and magnetic field environment between the sun and 1 AU. The goal is to search for first-order global consequences rather than to make a parametric study. The analysis treats all three plasma velocity and magnetic field components in any convenient heliospheric plane of symmetry. The representative disturbance is examined for the canonical case in which the temporal and spatial changes in a homogeneous solar wind caused by a solar-flare-generated shock wave are described. All plasma and field parameters at three radial locations are examined. These are the central meridian and 33 deg W and 90 deg W of the flare's central meridian. It is found that the incorporation of a small meridional magnetic field in the ambient magnetic spiral field has negligible effect on the results. The magnetic field exhibits strong kinking within the interplanetary shocked flow, even reversed polarity that, coupled with low temperature and low density, suggests a plausible explanation for magnetic clouds' with accompanying double-streaming of electrons observed at directions approximately 90 deg to the heliocentric radius.

A small, battery-operated fluoroscopic system - Lixiscope with X-ray generator

A small, battery-operated X-ray generator has been developed to be used as part of a small-format fluoroscopic system, the Lixiscope (Low Intensity X-ray Imaging Scope). The X-ray generator consists of a grounded rod-anode X-ray tube with a 0.2 mm focal spot and a specially designed, battery-operated, 0 to -80 kV high-voltge supply. Total power consumption is about 10 W. The fine focal spot, in conjunction with the continuously variable X-ray intensity and spectral distribution, helps to extend both the versatility and the performance of the Lixiscope toward a much wider range of terrestrial and spacecraft applications. The complete fluoroscopic system is described, and some examples of possible applications are shown.

Algebraic grid generation

The numerical solution of partial differential equations about irregular geometries and with varying characteristic scales has created the need for coordinate systems and associated transformations which reflect both geometric and physical requirements. The process of finding coordinate transformations in discrete representations is called 'grid generation'. The present investigation is concerned with three algebraic grid generation methods. The methods include transfinite interpolation, the multisurface method, and the two-boundary technique. Interpolation formulas, in terms of homotopic mappings and constraints in terms of point positions and/or derivatives are the essential elements of the techniques. The methods are relatively simple to understand, they are explicit and do not require extensive computational effort, and they have a high degree of generality.

Solution of viscous internal flows on curvilinear grids generated by the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation

The combination of an orthogonal, curvilinear coordinate generation procedure with a stable forward marching viscous flow solution technique is presently employed in the solution of flow fields for arbitrary, axisymmetric ducts. Coordinate generation is accomplished by means of both potential lines and plane potential flow streamlines. Since the coordinate streamlines approximate actual ones, the equations of motion for viscous compressible flow can be parabolized in order to solve for both the boundary layer and the core flow in a single streamwise pass. The method's versatility is demonstrated by two examples of viscous compressible swirling flow through complex radial gas turbine passages.

An experience in mesh generation for three-dimensional calculation of potential flow around a rotating propeller

An attempt is made to develop a three-dimensional, finite volume computational code for highly swept, twisted, small aspect ratio propeller blades with supersonic tip speeds, in a way that accounts for cascade effects, hub-induced flow, and nonlinear transonic effects. Attention is presently given to the generation of a computational mesh for such a complex propeller configuration, with the aim of sharing developmental process experience. The problem treated is unique, in that blade chord, blade length, hub length and blade-to-blade distance represent several characteristic length scales among which there is considerable disparity. An ad hoc mesh-generation scheme is accordingly developed.

Numerical generation of composite three dimensional grids by quasilinear elliptic systems

A three-dimensional grid generation technique designed to numerically construct a boundary-conforming grid within a three-dimensional region bounded by a closed surface is described. The boundary values are generated numerically by a modified elliptic system and are used to compute grid control parameters that are contained in the elliptic systems. The interior grid distribution is governed by the distribution of points on the boundary as well as by the boundary's geometric shape. The composite three-dimensional grid remains both continuous and smooth across the surface of juncture between any two adjoining subregions. The details of the method and its implementation are presented, displaying numerical results for three-dimensional composite grid for a wing-body combination and surface grids.

Recent progress in picosecond pulse generation from semiconductor lasers

This paper reviews the recent progress in producing picosecond optical pulses from semiconductor laser diodes. The discussion concentrates on the mode-locking of a semiconductor laser diode in an external resonator. Transform-limited optical pulses ranging from several picoseconds to subpicosecond durations have been observed with active and passive mode-locking. Even though continuing research on the influence of impurities and defects on the mode-locking process is still needed, this technique has good promise for being utilized in fiber-optic communication systems. Alternative methods of direct electrical and optical excitation to produce ultrashort laser pulses are also described. They can generate pulses of similar widths to those obtained by mode-locking. The pulses generated will find applications in laser ranging and detector response measurement.
