Temperature profile retrievals with extended Kalman-Bucy filters

The Extended Kalman-Bucy Filter is a powerful technique for estimating non-stationary random parameters in situations where the received signal is a noisy non-linear function of those parameters. A practical causal filter for retrieving atmospheric temperature profiles from radiances observed at a single scan angle by the Scanning Microwave Spectrometer (SCAMS) carried on the Nimbus 6 satellite typically shows approximately a 10-30% reduction in rms error about the mean at almost all levels below 70 mb when compared with a regression inversion.

Performance of fused silica as a filter in a wide field-of-view earth radiation budget radiometer

The thermal response of the fused silica dome filter in an earth radiation budget WFOV shortwave channel conceptual design and the impact of that response on the channel measurement, is described. Attention is given to results from design definition and performance analysis studies. Consideration is given to problems associated with achieving the desired levels of confidence in a high accuracy filtered earth radiation budget WFOV radiometer. Finally, design approaches, ground calibration, and data reduction techniques that minimize measurement uncertainties are covered.

Asymptotic eigenstructures of filters

This paper describes relationships between Kalman-Bucy filter design parameters and the asymptotic eigenstructures of the resulting error dynamics. Simple, explicit formulas are developed which select noise intensity matrices to achieve pre-specified eigenstructures. The results also add basic understanding of the asymptotic properties of filters, particularly with respect to recently proposed robustness recovery processes.

Distributed parameter system coupled ARMA expansion identification and adaptive parallel IIR filtering - A unified problem statement

A novel interconnection of distributed parameter system (DPS) identification and adaptive filtering is presented, which culminates in a common statement of coupled autoregressive, moving-average expansion or parallel infinite impulse response configuration adaptive parameterization. The common restricted complexity filter objectives are seen as similar to the reduced-order requirements of the DPS expansion description. The interconnection presents the possibility of an exchange of problem formulations and solution approaches not yet easily addressed in the common finite dimensional lumped-parameter system context. It is concluded that the shared problems raised are nevertheless many and difficult.

Spatial and temporal filtering technique for processing lidar photocount data

Shot noise places a practical limit on the spatial and temporal resolution of lidar photocount data. A 2-D signal-processing technique that utilizes spatial and temporal filtering to reduce shot noise and increase resolution is described. The technique is applied to sodium lidar data collected during the fall of 1979 over Urbana, Illinois. Temporal filtering is shown to enhance the spatial resolution of the sodium profiles significantly by reducing shot noise by more than 10 dB. The signal-processing technique is applicable to a wide variety of lidar data.

Near millimeter wave bandpass filters

The properties of bandpass filters for broadband photometry are reported in the 3-12/cm frequency range. The filters are based on a combination of capacitive grids deposited on thick Mylar substrates and are designed to have very high out-of-band rejection. Low frequencies are blocked by a thick grill that consists of a hexagonal grid of circular holes in a thick metal plate.

Kalman filtering for spacecraft attitude estimation

Several schemes in current use for sequential estimation of spacecraft attitude using Kalman filters are examined. These differ according to their treatment of the attitude error, namely: using the complete four-component quaternion; using a truncated quaternion in which one of the components has been eliminated; or using a quaternion referred to approximate body-fixed axes. These schemes are examined for the case of a spacecraft carrying line-of-sight attitude sensors and three-axis gyros whose measurements are corrupted by noise on both the drift rate and the drift-rate ramp. The analysis of the covariance is carried out in detail. The historical development of Kalman filtering of attitude is reviewed.

Real time prediction of marine vessel motions using Kalman filtering techniques

The present investigation is concerned with the prediction of the future behavior of a vessel within some confidence bounds at a specific instant of time, taking into account an interval of a few seconds. The ability to predict accurately the motions of a vessel can reduce significantly the probability of failure of operations in rough seas. The investigation was started as part of an effort to ensure safe landing of aircraft on relatively small vessels. However, the basic principles involved in the study are the same for any offshore operation, such as carbo transfer in the open sea, structure installation, and floating crane operation. The Kalman filter is a powerful tool for achieving the goals of the prediction procedure. Attention is given to a linear optimal predictor, the equations of motion of the vessel, the wave spectrum, rational approximation, the use of Kalman filter and predictor in an application for a ship, and the motions of a semisubmersible.

Application of Kalman filters to robot calibration

This report explores new uses of Kalman filter theory in manufacturing systems (robots in particular). The Kalman filter allows the robot to read its sensors plus external sensors and learn from its experience. In effect, the robot is given primitive intelligence. The study, which is applicable to any type of powered kinematic linkage, focuses on the calibration of a manipulator.

Decoupling the structural modes estimated using recursive lattice filters

A method is presented for decoupling modal amplitudes generated by recursive least squares lattice filters. The proposed method, which involves transformation of basis functions obtained from lattice filters, is illustrated using a free-free beam simulation. The decoupled mode shape functions are required for the implementation of an adaptive control scheme for large space systems.

Optimal interpolation and the Kalman filter

The estimation theory of stochastic-dynamic systems is described and used in a numerical study of optimal interpolation. The general form of data assimilation methods is reviewed. The Kalman-Bucy, KB filter, and optimal interpolation (OI) filters are examined for effectiveness in performance as gain matrices using a one-dimensional form of the shallow-water equations. Control runs in the numerical analyses were performed for a ten-day forecast in concert with the OI method. The effects of optimality, initialization, and assimilation were studied. It was found that correct initialization is necessary in order to localize errors, especially near boundary points. Also, the use of small forecast error growth rates over data-sparse areas was determined to offset inaccurate modeling of correlation functions near boundaries.

Real time estimation of ship motions using Kalman filtering techniques

The estimation of the heave, pitch, roll, sway, and yaw motions of a DD-963 destroyer is studied, using Kalman filtering techniques, for application in VTOL aircraft landing. The governing equations are obtained from hydrodynamic considerations in the form of linear differential equations with frequency dependent coefficients. In addition, nonminimum phase characteristics are obtained due to the spatial integration of the water wave forces. The resulting transfer matrix function is irrational and nonminimum phase. The conditions for a finite-dimensional approximation are considered and the impact of the various parameters is assessed. A detailed numerical application for a DD-963 destroyer is presented and simulations of the estimations obtained from Kalman filters are discussed.

Singular perturbation, state aggregation and nonlinear filtering

Consideration is given to a state process evolving in R(n), whose motion is that of a pure jump process in R(n) in the 0(1) time scale, upon which is superimposed a continuous motion along the orbits of a gradient-like vector field g in R(n) in the 0(1/epsilon) time scale. The infinitesimal generator of the state process is, in other words, of the form L + (1/epsilon)g. It follows from the main results presented that the projected filters converge to the finite state Wonham filter corresponding to the problem of estimating the finite state process in the presence of additive white noise.

Experiments using least square lattice filters for the identification of structural dynamics

An approach for identifying the dynamics of large space structures is applied to a free-free beam. In this approach the system's order is determined on-line, along with mode shapes, using recursive lattice filters which provide a least square estimate of the measurement data. The mode shapes determined are orthonormal in the space of the measurements and, hence, are not the natural modes of the structure. To determine the natural modes of the structure, a method based on the fast Fourier transform is used on the outputs of the lattice filter. These natural modes are used to obtain the modal amplitude time series which provides the input data for an output error parameter identification scheme that identifies the ARMA parameters of the difference equation model of the modes. the approach is applied to both simulated and experimental data.

Diagnostic analysis of vibration signals using adaptive digital filtering techniques

Signal enhancement techniques are described using recently developed digital adaptive filtering equipment. Adaptive filtering concepts are not new; however, as a result of recent advances in microprocessor-based electronics, hardware has been developed that has stable characteristics and of a size exceeding 1000th order. Selected data processing examples are presented illustrating spectral line enhancement, adaptive noise cancellation, and transfer function estimation in the presence of corrupting noise.

Adaptive control of a flexible beam using least square lattice filters

This paper presents an indirect adaptive control scheme for the control of flexible structures using recursive least square lattice filters. The identification scheme uses lattice filters which provide an on-line estimate of the number of modes, mode shapes and modal amplitudes. These modes are coupled and a transformation to decouple them in order to obtain the natural modes is presented. The decoupled modal amplitude time series are then used in an equation error identification scheme to identify the model parameters in an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) form. The control is based on modal pole placement scheme with the objective of vibration suppression. The control gains are calculated based on the identified ARMA parameters. Before using the identified parameters for control, detailed testing and validation procedures are carried out on the identified parameters. The full adaptive control scheme is demonstrated using the simulation for the 12 foot free-free beam apparatus at NASA Langley Research Center.

Aquatic Plants Aid Sewage Filter

Method of wastewater treatment combines micro-organisms and aquatic plant roots in filter bed. Treatment occurs as liquid flows up through system. Micro-organisms, attached themselves to rocky base material of filter, act in several steps to decompose organic matter in wastewater. Vascular aquatic plants (typically, reeds, rushes, cattails, or water hyacinths) absorb nitrogen, phosphorus, other nutrients, and heavy metals from water through finely divided roots.
