Photoelectrochemical fabrication of spectroscopic diffraction gratings

Photoelectrochemical etching was demonstrated as a means of fabricating a variety of periodic structures in semiconductors. The semiconductor is used as an electrode in an electrochemical cell, and is in contact with a liquid electrolyte. When the crystal is held at a positive voltage and illuminated, etching occurs in only the illuminated regions to a depth proportional to the illumination intensity and exposure time. In Phase 1, it was determined that diffraction gratings could be produced in gallium arsenide crystals by this method, using either a scanned focused laser beam or by uniform illumination of a ruling mask defined in metal or photoresist on the crystal surface. The latter approach was determined to produce V-grooves if the mask is oriented along certain crystallographic directions. These V-grooves were produced with an exceedingly smooth crystal morphology due to the highly controllable nature of the process and the mild electrolytes involved. The results form the basis for photoelectrochemical fabrication of deep, low pitch Eschelle gratings for use in high orders in NASA spectrographic instrumentation such as the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph.

No effect of diffraction on Pluto-Charon mutual events

Mulholland and Gustafson (1987) made the interesting suggestion that observations of Pluto-Charon mutual events might show significant dependence on both wavelength and telescope aperture because of diffraction effects. In this letter, observations are presented that show the predicted effects to be absent and demonstrate that the parameters of the system are such that the events can be accurately analyzed with geometrical optics.

On the efficient calculation of the incomplete Airy function with application to edge diffraction

When the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) and its extensions are used to calculate fields across transition regions or in focal areas, various special functions are necessary to create uniform representations. One such transition function is the incomplete Airy function, which is applicable when two reflection points are arbitrarily close to each other and the endpoint of the domain considered. An efficient calculation of the incomplete Airy function is presented and shown to equal known asymptotic expansions when its argument is away from the critical point. By using these expansions, uniform field expressions are found which are consistent with the GTD and maintain its computational efficiency.

Synchrotron radiation calibration of the EUVE variable line-spaced diffraction gratings at the NBS SURF II facility

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) has a spectrometer which utilizes variable line-spaced, plane diffraction gratings in the converging beam of a Wolter-Schwarzschild type II mirror. The gratings, microchannel plate detector, and thin film filters have been calibrated with continuum radiation provided by the NBS SURF II facility. These were calibrated in a continuum beam to find edges or other sharp spectral features in the transmission of the filters, quantum efficiency of the microchannel plate detector, and efficiency of the gratings. The details of the calibration procedure and the results of the calibration are presented.

X-ray diffraction studies of model compounds of thermoplastic polyimides

Several model compounds which represent aspects of the chemical structure of the Langley Research Center thermoplastic (LARC-TPI) have been synthesized for comparison studies using wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) as the discriminatory tool. The model compounds included N-phenylphthalimide, 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic diphthalimide, and N,N'-diphenyl-3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic diphthalimide. X-ray diffraction studies of appropriate model compounds can yield information to aid in the understanding of polymeric crystallographic structure. Crystallinity and physical property changes can thus be induced into materials having complicated structures by chemical and thermal processes.

Laser diffraction particle sizing: Instrument probe volume relocation and elongation

The effective probe volume of laser diffraction particle sizing instruments depends on many instrument parameters. In particular the probe volume axial boundaries and its location along laser beam are essentially defined by the onset of a vignetting effect where light scattered at large angles from small particles misses the transform lens. This vignetting effect results in a probe volume that must be inconveniently close to the lens in order to detect smaller diameter particles (less than 100 micrometers). With the addition of an appropriately designed Keplerian telescope, the probe volume may be relocated and elongated. The theory of operation of this supplemental optical system is described. Design considerations for these supplemental optical systems are described, including recommendations for lens specifications, assembly and use. An image transfer system is described which has been designed for use on a Malvern 2600HSD instrument. Experimental validation of this image transfer system is described.

X-ray diffraction measurements of residual stresses in SiC/Ti composites

Residual stresses are developed in metal matrix composites during consolidation because of the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the fiber and matrix constituents. X-ray diffraction techniques were used to measure tensile residual stresses in the matrix component of two different titanium alloy composites reinforced with continuous silicon carbide fibers. The titanium alloy matrices were a beta-stabilized alloy Ti-15V-3Al-3Cr-3Sn, and an ordered multiphase (alpha + beta) alloy, Ti-14Al-21Nb. Residual tensile stresses as high as 62 percent of the yield of Ti-15V-3Al-3Cr-3Sn and 70 percent of the yield of Ti-14Al-21Nb were measured in the longitudinal direction on unidirectionally reinforced composites. By measuring residual stresses in four different composite lay-ups, the composite lay-up was determined to have a significant effect on the residual stress state near the surface.

Influence of atmospherically induced random wave fronts on diffraction imagery - A computer simulation model for testing image reconstruction algorithms

This paper is devoted to the development of a two-dimensional computer-simulation model that is based on the rigid constraints of optical diffraction theory with careful attention paid to the generation of sample realizations of Gaussian-distributed, spatially random, isotropic wave fronts that have zero-mean and prescribed-covariance functions. Given a sample realization of the wave front, the corresponding centered point-spread function and optical-transfer function are evaluated. A detailed study is made of the statistics of random wave-front tilt, point-spread function, modulus squared of transfer function, and phase of transfer function.

EUV efficiency of a 6000-grooves per mm diffraction grating

In order to explore whether grooves ruled mechanically at a density of 6000 per mm can perform well at EUV wavelengths, a sample grating is measured with this density in an EUV calibration facility. Measurements are presented of the planar uniform line-space diffraction grating's efficiency and large-angle scattering.

An electron diffraction study of Bi2Sr2(Gd/x/Ca/1-x/)0.8Cu2O(8+delta)

The compound Bi2Sr2(Gd/x/Ca/1-x/)0.8Cu2O(8+delta) is examined by electron diffraction for several values of x. The incommensurate modulation which has been reported for x = 0 persists for all values of x with the wave vector increasing as x increases. A secondary modulation with a wave vector equal to one-half that of the primary is observed for x equal to or greater than 0.85. This modulation manifests itself through satellite reflections that are highly streaked normal to the (001) planes and that flank certain select positions in reciprocal space. The appearance of this secondary modulation is accompanied by a change in the average crystal structure from B-centered to F-centered orthorhombic.

Task reports on developing techniques for scattering by 3D composite structures and to generate new solutions in diffraction theory using higher order boundary conditions

There are two tasks described in this report. First, an extension of a two dimensional formulation is presented for a three dimensional body of revolution. With the introduction of a Fourier expansion of the vector electric and magnetic fields, a coupled two dimensional system is generated and solved via the finite element method. An exact boundary condition is employed to terminate the mesh and the fast fourier transformation is used to evaluate the boundary integrals for low O(n) memory demand when an iterative solution algorithm is used. Second, the diffraction by a material discontinuity in a thick dielectric/ferrite layer is considered by modeling the layer as a distributed current sheet obeying generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTC's).

The effect of Sr and Bi on the Si(100) surface oxidation - Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study

The effect of Sr and Bi on the oxidation of the Si(100) surface has been studied by Auger electron spectroscopy, low electron diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A dramatic enhancement, by a factor of 10, of the Si oxidation has been observed for Si(100) with a Sr overlayer. The SR-enhanced Si oxidation has been studied as a function of O2 exposure and Sr coverage. In contrast to the oxidation promotion of Sr on Si, it has been also observed that a Bi overlayer on Si(100) reduced Si oxidation significantly. Sr adsorption on the Si(100) with a Bi overlayer enhances Si oxidation only at Sr coverage of greater than 0.3 ML.

Performance of multilayer coated diffraction gratings in the EUV

The effect of multilayer coating application on the performance of a diffraction grating in the EUV spectral region was evaluated by examining the performance of a 3600-line/mm and a 1200-line/mm replica blazed gratings, designed for operation in the 300-A spectral region in first order. A ten-layer IrSi multilayer optimized for 304 A was deposited using electron-beam evaporation. The grating efficiency was measured on the SURF II calibration beamline in a chamber designed for calibrating the solar EUV rocket telescope and spectrograph multilayer coatings. A significant (by a factor of about 7) enhancement in grating efficiency in the 300-A region was demonstrated.

Diffraction of impulsive sounds by a curved obstruction - A time-domain study

The diffraction of spark-discharge-produced sound waves produced by a half circular cylinder covered with absorbing material is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The test bench setup and the measurement instrumentation and procedure are described; the derivation of an analytical model on the basis of the matched asymptotic expansion theory of Pierce (1981) is outlined; and the results are compared in graphs. Good general agreement is obtained, except in the deep shadow of the obstacle, where the theory underpredicts the magnitude of the received pulse. This discrepancy is tentatively attributed to the creeping-wave mechanism described by Pierce.

Diffraction by a multilayer slab recessed in a ground plane via generalized impedance boundary conditions

The diffraction problem associated with a multilayer material slab recessed in a perfectly conducting ground plane is formulated and solved via the generalized scattering matrix formulation in conjunction with the dual integral equation approach. The multilayer slab is replaced by a surface obeying a generalized impedance boundary condition to facilitate the computation of the pertinent Wiener Hopf split functions and their zeros. Both Ez and Hz polarizations are considered, and a number of scattering patterns are presented, some of which are compared to exact results available for a homogeneous recessed slab.

Inverse problems in diffraction

A two-dimensional problem of diffraction of a plane electromagnetic wave on a smooth 2 pi-periodic surface is considered. A numerical algorithm solving this problem is developed. An inverse problem of determination of the shape of 2 pi-periodic surface using the performance data of reverse scattering is considered. The inverse problem was solved by means of minimization of the residual functional with the help of the gradient descent method. The initial data were calculated with the help of the numerical method. On each step of the iterative method of minimization, the residual functional was calculated approximately with the help of the small slope method. The examples of the shape determination are considered.
