Evaluation of the Index and Singular Points of Linear Differential-Algebraic Equations of Higher Order

We study linear systems of ordinary differential equations of higher order with an identically singular matrix at the higher derivative of the required vector-valued function in the domain of definition. We give definitions of the index and singular points for these systems, formulate the conditions of solvability, and deduce a formula for the general solution. The algorithms for finding the index and singular points are presented.

Smoothness of Generalized Solutions of the Dirichlet Problem for Strongly Elliptic Functional Differential Equations with Orthotropic Contractions

In the disk, we consider the first boundary-value problem for a functional differential equation containing transformations of orthotropic contractions of independent variables of the unknown function. We study the smoothness of generalized solutions inside special-type subdomains and near their boundaries and pose strong ellipticity conditions.

Modified Steklov Functions and Numerical Differentiation Formulas

We consider an approximation method based on Steklov functions of the first and second order. We obtain estimates for the norms in the space C of continuous periodic functions and clarify how they connect with numerical differentiation formulas.

Solvability of Some Integro-Differential Equations with Anomalous Diffusion in Two Dimensions

We study the existence of solutions of an integro-differential equation in the case of the anomalous diffusion with the negative Laplace operator in a fractional power in two dimensions. The proof of the existence of solutions is based on a fixed point technique. Solvability conditions for non Fredholm elliptic operators in unbounded domains are used.

On the Kernel of a Two-Point Problem for a Partial Differential Equation of the Second Order in Time

We study the problem for a homogeneous partial differential equation of the second order with respect to time with given homogeneous two-point conditions in this variable and, in general, of the infinite order in the other (space) variable. It is proved that the analyzed problem possesses solely the trivial solution if the characteristic determinant is not identically equal to zero. In the case where the set of zeros of the characteristic determinant of this problem is nonempty, we propose a method for the construction of nontrivial solutions of the problem.

Asymptotics of the General Solution of a Linear Singularly Perturbed System of Higher-Order Differential Equations with Degenerations

By using the theory of polynomial matrix pencils, we construct the asymptotics of linearly independent solutions of homogeneous singularly perturbed system of linear differential equations of any order m with matrices at higher derivatives degenerating as a small parameter approaches zero. The general case is analyzed. In this case, the limit matrix pencil has several finite and infinite elementary divisors of both the same and different multiplicities. The corresponding asymptotic estimates are presented.

Formation and Decomposition Process of the Filled Skutterudite Sm{sub y}(Fe{sub x}Ni{sub 1−x}){sub 4}Sb{sub 12} (0.40 ≤ x ≤ 1) as Revealed by Differential Thermal Analysis

Filled skutterudites are among the most promising thermoelectric materials, and the obtainment of monophasic samples is crucial for the study of their transport properties. In this work, a differential thermal analysis study was performed on samples belonging to the Sm{sub y}(Fe{sub x}Ni{sub 1-x}){sub 4}Sb{sub 12} system with the aim to determine the most proper annealing temperature to possibly obtain skutterudite monophasic samples, and to study the effect of Sm addition on the thermodynamics of the Fe-Ni-Sb system. Samples were prepared through the traditional procedure consisting in melting–quenching–annealing the starting elements. DTA analyses were carried out on annealed samples, and results were interpreted using the Fe{sub 25}Sb{sub 75}-Ni{sub 25}Sb{sub 75} pseudobinary phase diagram taken from the literature as a starting point. They reveal that 870 K is the best annealing temperature, being the formation of a liquid phase just above this point; moreover, the Sm introduction results in widening the one-phase skutterudite stability region toward both higher temperatures and higher Fe concentrations compared with the Sm-free system.

A new computational approach for the solutions of generalized pantograph-delay differential equations

In this study, a new computational approach is presented to solve the generalized pantograph-delay differential equations (PDDEs). The solutions obtained by our scheme represent by a linear combination of a special kind of basis functions, and can be deduced in a straightforward manner. Firstly, using the least squares approximation method and the Lagrange-multiplier method, the given PDDE is converted to a linear system of algebraic equations, and those unknown coefficients of the solution of the problem are determined by solving this linear system. Secondly, a PDDE related to the error function of the approximate solution is constructed based on the residual error function technique, and error estimation is presented for the suggested method. The convergence of the approximate solution is proved. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency. Comparisons are made between the proposed method and other existing methods.

On differential singular perturbation problems: a simple variational approach

An alternative approach for the analysis and the numerical approximation of singular perturbation problems, using a variational framework, is presented. It is based on the natural idea of minimizing the residual of the differential equation measured in the L{sup 2} norm. By this strategy, the approximation is based in the solution of a set of linear problems giving the descent step directions of the problem. This is the main advantage of our approach, since we can use stable and convergent methods for linear problems (without assuming the knowledge of good initial guesses used in the approximation of the associated non-linear systems necessary in Newton-type methods). Remember that for this type of problems, we should use implicit methods. We prove that our procedure can never get stuck in local minima, and the error decreases until getting to the original solution independent of the perturbation parameter. Finally, we include some numerical examples.

Fifth-kind orthonormal Chebyshev polynomial solutions for fractional differential equations

The principal aim of the current paper is to present and analyze two new spectral algorithms for solving some types of linear and nonlinear fractional-order differential equations. The proposed algorithms are obtained by utilizing a certain kind of shifted Chebyshev polynomials called the shifted fifth-kind Chebyshev polynomials as basis functions along with the application of a modified spectral tau method. The class of fifth-kind Chebyshev polynomials is a special class of a basic class of symmetric orthogonal polynomials which are constructed with the aid of the extended Sturm–Liouville theorem for symmetric functions. An investigation for the convergence and error analysis of the proposed Chebyshev expansion is performed. For this purpose, a new connection formulae between Chebyshev polynomials of the first and fifth kinds are derived. The obtained numerical results ascertain that our two proposed algorithms are applicable, efficient and accurate.

A computationally efficient method for tempered fractional differential equations with application

This paper investigates the numerical approximation of the tempered fractional integral by using the Sinc-collocation scheme. The algorithm is extended to solve a class of tempered fractional differential equations that converges to the solution with exponential rate. Several numerical examples compare the numerical approximations with the exact solutions. The behavioral responses of the lumped capacitance model with tempered fractional order for transient conduction are investigated. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed scheme are analyzed in the perspective of the L{sub 2}-norm error and convergence order.

Variational multiscale element-free Galerkin method combined with the moving Kriging interpolation for solving some partial differential equations with discontinuous solutions

Solving partial differential equations with discontinuous solutions is an important challenging problem in numerical analysis. To this end, there are some methods such as finite volume method, discontinuous Galerkin approach and particle technique that are able to solve these problems. In the current paper, the moving Kriging element-free Galerkin method has been combined with the variational multiscale algorithm to obtain acceptable and high-resolution solutions. For testing this technique, we select some PDEs with discontinuous solution such as Burgers’, Sod’s shock tube, advection–reaction–diffusion, Kuramoto–Sivashinsky, Boussinesq and shallow water equations. First, we obtain a time-discrete scheme by approximating time derivative via finite difference technique. Then we introduce the moving Kriging interpolation and also obtain their shape functions. We use the element-free Galerkin method for approximating the spatial derivatives. This method uses a weak form of the considered equation that is similar to the finite element method with the difference that in the classical element-free Galerkin method test and trial functions are moving least squares approximation (MLS) shape functions. Since the shape functions of moving least squares (MLS) approximation do not have Kronecker delta property, we cannot implement the essential boundary condition, directly. Thus, we employ the shape functions of moving Kriging interpolation and radial point interpolation technique which have the mentioned property. Also, in the element-free Galekin method, we do not use any triangular, quadrangular or other type of meshes. The element-free Galerkin method is a global method while finite element method is a local one. This technique employs a background mesh for integration which makes it different from the truly mesh procedures. Several test problems are solved and numerical simulations are reported which confirm the efficiency of the proposed schemes.

Numerical solution of systems of fractional delay differential equations using a new kind of wavelet basis

In the present paper, a new orthonormal wavelet basis, called Chelyshkov wavelet, is constructed from a class of orthonormal polynomials. These wavelet basis and their properties are utilized to obtain their operational matrix of fractional integration in the Riemann–Liouville sense and delay operational matrix. Convergence and error bound of the expansion by this kind of wavelet functions are investigated. Then, these operational matrices along with the Galerkin approach have been implemented to solve systems of fractional delay differential equations (SFDDEs). The main superiority of the proposed technique is that it reduces SFDDEs to a system of algebraic equations. Moreover, accuracy and efficiency of the suggested Chelyshkov wavelet approach are verified through some linear and nonlinear SFDDEs. Finally, the obtained numerical results are compared with those previously reported in the literature.

On spectral methods for solving variable-order fractional integro-differential equations

This paper applies the shifted Jacobi–Gauss collocation (SJ–G-C) method for solving variable-order fractional integro-differential equations (VO-FIDE) with initial conditions. The Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative, D{sup ν(x)}, and integral, I{sup ν(x)}, of variable order are combined, and the SJ–G-C applied to produce a system of algebraic equations. Numerical experiments demonstrate the applicability and reliability of the algorithm when compared with current methods.
