The Advanced Low-Emissions Catalytic-Combustor Program: Phase I - Description and status

The Advanced Low-Emissions Catalytic-Combustor Program is an ongoing three-phase contract effort with the primary objective of evolving the technology required for incorporating catalytic combustors into advanced aircraft gas-turbine engines. Phase I is currently in progress. At the present time, analytical evaluation is being conducted on advanced catalytic-combustor concepts, including variable geometry, with their known inherent potential advantages of low-level pollutant emissions, widened combustion stability limits, and reduced pattern factor for longer turbine life. Phases II and III will consist of experimental evaluation of the most promising concepts.

Description of A 2.3 kW power transformer for space applications

The paper describes the principal features and special testing of a high-frequency high-power low-specific-weight (0.57 kg/kW) 2.3-kW electronic power transformer developed for space applications. The transformer is operated in a series resonant inverter supplying beam power to a 30-cm mercury ion thruster. High efficiency (above 98.5%) is obtained through careful detailed design. A number of unique heat removal techniques are discussed which control the winding temperature using only the available conductive cooling.

A two phase Mach number description of the equilibrium flow of nitrogen in ducts

Some additional thermodynamic properties of the usual two-phase form which is linear in the moisture fraction are derived which are useful in the analysis of many kinds of duct flow. The method used is based on knowledge of the vapor pressure and Gibbs function as functions of temperature. With these, additional two-phase functions linear in moisture fraction are generated, which ultimately reveal that the squared ratio of mixture specific volume to mixture sound speed depends on liquid mass fraction and temperature in the same manner as do many weighted mean two-phase properties. This leads to a simple method of calculating two-phase Mach numbers for various duct flows. The matching of one- and two-phase flows at a saturated vapor point with discontinuous Mach number is also discussed.

Description and status of NASA-LeRC/DOE photovoltaic applications systems experiments

In its role of supporting the DOE Photovoltaic Program, the NASA-Lewis Research Center has designed, fabricated and installed 16 geographically dispersed photovoltaic systems. These systems are powering a refrigerator, highway warning sign, forest lookout towers, remote weather stations, a water chiller at a visitor center, and insect survey traps. Each of these systems is described in terms of load requirements, solar array and battery size, and instrumentation and controls. Operational experience is described and present status is given for each system. The P/V power systems have proven to be highly reliable with almost no problems with modules and very few problems overall

Description of the ISEE satellite-to-satellite kilometric wavelength interferometer system

The International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE) spacecraft 1 and 2 carry receivers for detecting electromagnetic waves with kilometric wavelengths. For selected receiver frequencies from 30 kHz to 2 MHz, a 10-kHz bandwidth channel is single-sideband mixed down to baseband. These analog data and a reference frequency, which is a submultiple of the local oscillator frequency, are transmitted to ground stations and tape recorded along with the precise time and frequency information. Cross correlation of these tape recorded signals constitutes a satellite-to-satellite interferometer with a fringe spacing of 0.4 to 41 arcmin (at a range of 10,000 to 100 km spacing between spacecraft for 250 kHz in frequency) and with a time-delay resolution of 32 microsec for a 10-kHz bandwidth, which gives an angular resolution of 3 min to 6 deg of arc. For kilometric radiation at earth, sources in the size range of 25 to 2500 km can be identified (from 20 earth radii) and located in relative position ranging from 0.02 to 2 earth radii, depending on spacecraft spacing. Reception and analysis of solar and Jovian bursts may also be possible.

Spacelab interface development tests. Software description

The software requirements for the Spacelab Interface Development Tests are described. The software operates in two modes. The multiplexer-demultiplexer mode transmits operator-controlled information to the Spacelab. The pulse coded modulation (PCM) mode records and displays operator selected PCM data for visual analysis.

NASA broad-specification fuels combustion technology program: Status and description

The program presented is a contracted effort to evolve and demonstrate the technology required to utilize broad-specification fuels in current and next generation commercial Conventional Takeoff and Landing aircraft engines, and to verify this technology in full-scale engine tests in 1983. The program consists of three phases: Combustor Concept Screening, Combustor Optimization Testing, and Engine Verification Testing. The development and screening of the combustion system designs for the CF6-80 engine and the JT9D-7 engine, respectively, in high-pressure sector test rigs are reported.

Orbiter Landing Loads Math Model Description and Correlation with ALT Flight Data

Results of the space shuttle approach and landing test are examined in order to assess landing gear characteristics and performance and verify landing dynamic analyses. The landing gears were instrumented with load-calibrated strain gages, a wheel-speed sensor, and strut stroke measurement devices. The mathematical procedure used in predicting the shuttle touchdown loads and dynamics is presented together with the comparisons between measured flight data and the analytical predictions. Conclusions from these data are also presented.

Digital ultrasonic signal processing: Primary ultrasonics task and transducer characterization use and detailed description

This manual describes the use of the primary ultrasonics task (PUT) and the transducer characterization system (XC) for the collection, processing, and recording of data received from a pulse-echo ultrasonic system. Both PUT and XC include five primary functions common to many real-time data acquisition systems. Some of these functions are implemented using the same code in both systems. The solicitation and acceptance of operator control input is emphasized. Those operations not under user control are explained.
