The eutectic alloy Ni-20.0%Cb-2.5%Al-6.0%Cr was tested in short-term creep and long-term exposure to service conditions to assess its suitability for high temperature turbine blade applications. Long-time exposure showed the lamellar microstructure of the alloy to be exceptionally stable. Other properties tested were notch sensitivity, isothermal and thermomechanical fatigue strength, shear strength, and transverse ductility. It was shown that this alloy is superior to the best currently available directionally solidified superalloys over the temperature/stress conditions encountered in turbine airfoils.

Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) and root subcomponent tensile, creep, and low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were conducted to determine the capability of a fully lamellar directionally solidified eutectic alloy to sustain the airfoil thermal fatigue and root attachment loads anticipated in advanced, hollow, high work turbine blades. A three dimensional finite element elastic stress analysis was performed on typical advanced hollow eutectic airfoil and root-platform designs to determine appropriate conditions for these tests. Results of TMF tests conducted on longitudinal specimens (stress axis parallel to the solidification direction) containing a simulated leading edge cooling hole pattern indicated the longitudinal TMF properties to be more than adequate for the particular advanced hollow blade analyzed, with the strain range for a 10,000 cycle life being more than 50% above the maximum strain range calculated for the advanced hollow blade.
This paper describes the detailed design of the voice digitization technique which has been selected for the Space Shuttle Program. Measured performance results are discussed and the projected characteristics of Shuttle flight hardware are described.
The beam-foil time-of-flight method has been used to investigate radiative lifetimes and transition rates involving allowed intrashell transitions within the L shell of highly ionized sulfur. The results for these transitions, which can be particularly correlation-sensitive, are compared with current calculations based upon multiconfigurational models.

The Space Data Technology Facility (SDTF) would have the role of supporting a wide range of data technology related demonstrations which might be performed on Spacelab. The SDTF design is incorporated primarily in one single width standardized Spacelab rack. It consists of various display, control and data handling components together with interfaces with the demonstration-specific equipment and Spacelab. To arrive at this design a wide range of data related technologies and potential demonstrations were also investigated. One demonstration concerned with online image rectification and registration was developed in some depth.

Narrow-band differential very long baseline interferometry required phase connections between consecutive scans. An efficient computer aided scheme for this purpose is presented. This scheme is an iteration process alternating between a grand fit on many scans and integer quantization of the phase shift cycles to be assigned to the scans. Only linear simultaneous equations of a few unknowns need to be solved. A simulation analysis indicates that faultless phase connection can be expected when there is no localized systematic noise. When systematic noise of moderate level exists, the possible incorrect phase connection can be detected and connected for by comparing the connected phases from the two alternating observations, after removing the residual diurnal effects.

Two studies are described in which CAD methods are used for preliminary design of advanced earth-to-orbit transport wings. The first structural concept was a multilayer honeycomb wing composed of diffusion-bonded Inconel 718; the second concept (in which structural simplicity was sought) involved a honeycomb sandwich wing, for which only a leading edge and trailing edge spar were used. Some new technologies applicable to advanced wing designs are briefly discussed.
Nuclear pumped laser technology was evaluated as a possible future weapons contender. It was determined that in order to become a primary weapon the following engineering problems must be solved: shielding, heat dissipation, high efficiency fixed focus pumping, good beam quality, and thermal blooming.
