TEX-HEU Baseline Assemblies: Highly Enriched Uranium Plates with Polyethylene Moderator and Polyethylene Reflector (IER-297 CED-4b Report)

This experiment provides the baseline experimental configurations for TEX-HEU. The purpose of the TEX-HEU design is to provide multiple configurations that span the entire neutron energy spectrum and can be easily modified to incorporate diluent materials. Future experiments utilizing the TEX-HEU design are planned to incorporate hafnium, lithium, and chlorine as diluent materials. Five experimental configurations were judged to be acceptable critical benchmark experiments.

PMT-004 Validation Testing for Thermal Scattering Laws and Some Interesting Temperature-Dependent Implications [Slides]

This presentation finds that PMT-004 has four new benchmark cases highly sensitive to PE TSL (2 cases) and PMMA TSL (2 Cases). Additionally discovered was that the PE cases were well predicted using MCNP6.2 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. PMMA cases overpredicted by approximately 0.6-0.7% in k eff likely due to the lack of integral benchmarks sensitive to PMMA. The NCSU ENDF/B-VIII.1 PMMA TSL is an improvement over VIII.0. This was Accepted at last ICSBEP meeting pending comment resolution, should be published in 2024 version of the Handbook. It was found that temperature had a large impact on reactivity of the critical configuration. This has Implications for validation work for thermal cases- need to adjust TSL data to correct temperature as it can have hundreds of pcm effects for a few °C. Future thermal experiments should try and measure reactivity at multiple temperatures to add in data testing and benchmark adjustment.

Proposed Updates to Pu Evaluation for ENDF/B-VIII.0β 2 [Slides]

This presentation shows current status of in ENDF/B-VIII.0 and ENDF/B-VIII.0β 1 Pu evaluations. With a focus on the Pu thermal solutions (PST) and sanity check on fast metal assemblies (PMF). Pu ENDFβ 1 file in the low-energy region included updates in RRR (up to 2.5 keV), TNC and PFNS. Discussed are improvements over ENDF/B-VIII.0 in the C/E benchmarks (PST 81 cases) with preliminary ν p and cross section covariance generation for the resolved resonance energy range up to 2.25 keV. Highlighted are proposed updates for ENDFβ 2 with an extension of the RRR evaluation up to 5 keV, inclusion of Mosby’s data including proper resolution function (thanks to Marian J.), and a particular focus on η energy dependence from thermal up to 10 eV with the impact of the capture-to-fission ratio at 0.29 eV. This presentation concludes with an updated ν p and cross section covariance generation for the resolved resonance energy range up to 5 keV. And additional validation to test performance at about 2 eV and in the keV region.

On Integral Benchmarks for Resolving TSL Conflicts for ENDF/B-VIII.1 Release [Slides]

This presentation touches on polystyrene ORNL evaluation in TSL review process for ENDF/B-VIII.1. the presentation found excellent agreement with INS and transmission measurements. Additionally, PS and PE evaluations with different phonon spectra, similar total xs., calculate keff similarly. This presentation found for critical benchmarks. While extremely useful for validation of nuclear data at all energies, critical benchmarks are not the best tool to provide a definitive answer on conflicting TSLs. In conclusion this presentation found INS and transmission measurements need to be the basis of validation of TSLs.

ORNL’s Continuing Efforts in Evaluating and Validating TSLs [Slides]

This presentation finds that INS measurements are not as variable based on sample composition, because phonon spectra is a properly of the bulk material. Additionally, INS and transmission measurements are and should be the most significant part of TSL validation, as they are the fundamental quantities used by Monte Carlo neutronics codes. This presentation reasons that relaying solely on theoretical atomistic calculations for TSL evaluation is not enough, they are highly dependent on inter-atomic potentials (which are not the most accurate depending on the quantity trying to be reproduced) and evaluators knowledge and understanding of the material being studied. Finally on Critical benchmarks, while extremely useful for validation of nuclear data at all energies, critical benchmarks are not the best tool to provide a definitive answer on conflicting TSLs. The presentation concludes that INS and transmission measurements need to be the basis of validation of TSLs.

Impact of Thermal Scattering Law on Similarity Assessment in Light-Water or Polyethylene-Moderated Systems [Slides]

This presentation found validation efforts revealed noticeable differences in c k for light-water and polyethylene moderated systems when compared to PST-002-001. Additionally, although 1 H-H 2 O and 1 H-poly use the same cross section and covariance data, the treatment of TSLs in SCALE lead to no contribution to ck between polyethylene application and benchmark experiment. When H 2 O contribution were removed the difference in c k appears to come from 239 Pu chi. Sensitivity profiles and data-induced uncertainty confirmed that the polyethylene application was more closely resembling the benchmark experiment. Specific differences between similar systems can be accounted for and examined to help understand differences in similarity (c k ) between systems was a conclusion reached by this presentation.
