Arctic odyssey - Five years of data buoys in AIDJEX

The Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment of 1975-1976 used data bouys in conjunction with tracking satellites to study the interaction of Arctic Sea ice with the environment, and, more specifically, to define the motion of ice on the perimeter of the area of interest and to measure surface barometeric pressure over the same area. Charts are presented, indicating the position of the buoy array along with a table detailing buoy characteristics. The position fix accuracy of RAMS (Random Access Measurement System) buoys is discussed together with position errors due to the along-track motion of the observing satellites. Polar satellite data collection and tracking efficiency is assessed together with satellite system flexibility concepts.

Solar electric propulsion combined with earth gravity assist - A new potential for planetary exploration

The need to shorten mission time (travel time to target planet) in missions to the outer planets prompts a search for alternatives to one-way minimum-energy transfers while continuing to minimize on-power thrusts. Gravity assists via swing-bys of inner planets are examined, with emphasis on a projected Venus-earth gravity assist (VEGA) and a combined solar electric propulsion and earth gravity assist (SEEGA). Gravity assists are also examined as essential for missions with sample returns back to earth. Possible use of such techniques in the Shuttle Interim Upper Stage (IUS) program is considered. Various SEEGA and VEGA trajectories are discussed and charted, and time lost in the launch orbit to earth re-encounter time is weighed against time gained by faster speed toward the mission destination.

Optical counterparts of AFCRL infrared sources

The paper presents results of a search for optical counterparts of confirmed AFCRL infrared sources using the Palomar Sky Survey and direct photography with the Carnegie image tube camera. Positions and identification charts for possible counterparts to 26 AFCRL sources are presented. A list of AFCRL sources for which no optical counterparts were found is given, and some arguments to explain why the results of this search were negative are presented.

Viking magnetic properties investigation - Preliminary results

Three permanent-magnet arrays are aboard the Viking lander. By sol 35, one array, fixed on a photometric reference test chart on top of the lander, has clearly attracted magnetic particles from airborne dust; two other magnet arrays, one strong and one weak, incorporated in the backhoe of the surface sampler, have both extracted considerable magnetic mineral from the surface as a result of nine insertions associated with sample acquisition. The loose Martian surface material around the landing site is judged to contain 3 to 7 per cent highly magnetic mineral which, pending spectrophotometric study, is thought to be mainly magnetite.

Apparatus for determining surface tension

System for studying capillary action uses pressure transducer and chart recorder instead of manometer. Apparatus enables measurements to be made under controlled atmospheres. It also may be remotely operated. These features are particularly useful when dealing with noxious liquids and for study of surface tension under high-pressure conditions that require use of all-metal apparatus.

On-orbit flight control algorithm description

Algorithms are presented for rotational and translational control of the space shuttle orbiter in the orbital mission phases, which are external tank separation, orbit insertion, on-orbit and de-orbit. The program provides a versatile control system structure while maintaining uniform communications with other programs, sensors, and control effectors by using an executive routine/functional subroutine format. Software functional requirements are described using block diagrams where feasible, and input--output tables, and the software implementation of each function is presented in equations and structured flow charts. Included are a glossary of all symbols used to define the requirements, and an appendix of supportive material.

A 15,000-hour cyclic endurance test of an 8-centimeter-diameter electron bombardment mercury ion thruster

A laboratory model 8 cm thruster with improvements to minimize ion chamber erosion and peeling of sputtered metal was subjected to a cyclic endurance test for 15,040 hours and 460 restarts. A charted history of several thruster operating variables and off-normal events are shown in 600-hour segments at three points in the test. The transient behavior of these variables during a typical start-stop cycle is presented. Finding of the post-test inspection confirmed most of the expected results. Charge exchange ions caused normal accelerator grid erosion. The workability of the various design features was substantiated, and attainable improvements in propellant utilization efficiency should significantly reduce accelerator erosion.

LANDSAT menhaden and thread herring resources investigation, Gulf of Mexico

The author has identified the following significant results. The most significant achievements thus far include the successful charting of high probability fishing areas from LANDSAT MSS data and the successful simulation of an operational satellite system to provide tactical information for the commercial harvest of menhaden.

Centroid and moments of an area using a digitizer

The centroid and moments of an area program provides the centroid, moments of inertia, product of inertia, radii of gyration, and area of any closed planar geometric figure. The figure must be available in graphic form and is digitized once with chart digitizer (graphic tablet). The digitizer origin may be set anywhere on the digitizer table. After digitizing, fifteen quantities are calculated and displayed: (1) area (2) moment of inertia of area with respect to digitizer x-axis, (3) moment of inertia of area with respect to digitizer y-axis, (4) product of inertia of area with respect to digitizer axes, (5) first moment of x for digitizer axes, (6) first moment of y for digitizer axes, (7) x coordinate of centroid, (8) y coordinate of centroid, (9) moment of area inertia of with respect to x axis through centroid, (10) moment of inertia of area with respect to y axis through centroid, (11) product inertia of area with respect to x and y axes through centroid, (12) polar moment of inertia of area around centroid, (13) radius of gyration about digitizer x axis, (14) radius of gyration about digitizer y-axis; and (15) variance in the x-direction.

Synoptic analyses, 5-, 2-, and 0.4-millibar surfaces, July 1973 - June 1974

Satellite radiance measurements and data from meteorological rocketsondes were employed to analyze a series of high-altitude constant pressure charts. The methods of processing the various types of data and the analysis procedure used are described. Broad-scale analyses for the Northern Hemisphere 5-, 2-, and 0.4-mb surfaces are presented for each week of the period from September through April, and on a once-per-month basis for July, August, May, and June. A brief discussion of the variations of the temperature and height fields throughout the year is also given.

Al-26: A galactic source of gamma ray line emission

It is shown that Al26 is a very good candidate for producing a detectable gamma-ray line, and that this line is not only intense but also very narrow. By examining the chart of nuclides for other radioactive isotopes which could produce hiterto unnoticed gamma-ray lines following nucleosynthesis, it is found that for mass numbers less than 60, the isotopes Na22, Al26, K40, Ar42, Ti44, Sc46, Mn54, Co56, Co57, Co58, Co60 and Fe60 are the only ones with sufficiently long half lives (70) days to produce gamma rays in optically thin regions.

YF-16 flight flutter test procedures

The Random Decrement technique (Randomdec) was incorporated in procedures for flight testing of the YF-16 lightweight fighter prototype. Damping values obtained substantiate the adequacy of the flutter margin of safety. To confirm the structural modes which were being excited, a spectral analysis of each channel was performed using the AFFTC time/data 1923/50 time series analyzer. Inflight test procedure included the careful monitoring of strip charts, three axis pulses, rolls, and pullups.
