Optimal Power Flow Derived Sparse Linear Solver Benchmarks

Due to the changing nature of the power grid, it is increasingly important to be able to solve a high-fidelity optimal power-flow models on large power networks. This high-fidelity problem, called AC Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF), is a nonlinear, nonconvex optimization problem. One of the few reliable ways of solving such a problem is interior point methods. These methods result in sparse linear systems where the coefficient matrix is symmetric, indefinite and nearly always ill-conditioned. As such, they are particularly challenging for sparse linear solvers and represent a considerable computational bottleneck in solving the ACOPF problem. In this paper, we introduce a repository of linear systems captured from ACOPF problems when solved by the open-source optimizer IPOPT. These matrices are meant to be used as a test suite for sparse linear solver development.

DeepSurveySim: Simulation Software and Benchmark Challenges for Astronomical Observation Scheduling

Modern astronomical surveys have multiple competing scientific goals. Optimizing the observation schedule for these goals presents significant computational and theoretical challenges, and state-of-the-art methods rely on expensive human inspection of simulated telescope schedules. Automated methods, such as Reinforcement Learning (RL), have recently been explored to accelerate scheduling. DeepSurveySim provides methods for tracking and approximating sky conditions for a set of observations from a user-supplied telescope configuration.

Performance Benchmark of Commercial and Developmental Fission Chambers in Elevated Temperatures

This report documents the testing of two in-core fission chamber technologies for high-temperature irradiation environments. This work is in collaboration with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The fission chamber evaluated by Idaho National Laboratory is the micro-pocket fission detector (MPFD). The fission chamber evaluated by the CEA are the 3 mm miniaturized fission chamber and the 7 mm high-temperature fission chamber. Demonstrations of the MPFD were performed at the Neutron Radiography Facility and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Reactor. Demonstrations of the CEA fission chambers were performed at the Ohio State University Research Reactor. All demonstrations were conducted with a heated experiment rig up to 850°C.

Two MCNP Models for Computational Performance Benchmarking

The purpose of this report is to describe two non-trivial MCNP models and execution configurations that are suitable to characterizing computational performance. To that end, this report uses a constructive solid geometry (CSG) representation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Pool Critical Assembly (PCA) [1–3] to perform a k-eigenvalue calculation and an unstructured mesh (UM) representation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) publication 145 (ICRP145) male human phantom [4, 5] to perform a fixed-source calculation assuming that a 1 MeV photon source is distributed throughout the phantom’s liver.

Godiva IV Shielding Benchmark Overview [Slides]

This presentation shows that Integral experiments increase the level of realism from that of data measurements. Further, Godiva IV is capable of intensities to activate foils. IER 498 uses a relative measurement to provide an intermediate level of realism. With reproducibility and room return management are key components. The test matrix put forward in CED-2 enables numerous cross-comparisons. IER 498 facilitates various additional works using a room return shield to isolate the source. IER 557 demonstrated burst reproducibility sufficient for IER 498.

Impact of Light Water Covariance on Integral Benchmarks [Slides]

New light water covariance has been generated. Impact of covariance quantified using two metrics on systems deemed sensitive to thermal scattering of light water. Analysis shows systems might not be sensitive enough to show significant differences. What differences were shown are most notable when comparing against the ENDF/B-VIII.0 covariance.

Benchmark Midplane Field for Medical FFA

This is a lattice cell for a fixed-field medical accelerator, transmitting protons from 10–250 MeV. The goal is to have fixed tunes throughout this energy range. The cell is based on the lattice Feb7 2024 ProtonAccelerator.f90 from Dejan Trbojevic and had the magnet field profiles re-optimised to attain fixed tunes with realistic magnet fringe fields.

Benchmarking MELCOR's NAC Package to ABCOVE Tests AB5 and AB6

This report presents analyses of the AB5 and AB6 ABCOVE sodium spray fire experiments with the MELCOR code. This code simulates the progression of accident events for analysis and auditing purposes of nuclear facilities during accident conditions. Historically, the ABCOVE experiments have contributed to the validation of aerosol physics and related phenomena. Given advancements in sodium-cooled reactor designs, characterization of the sodium spray combustion may further the review and validation of newly incorporated sodium properties and physics packages, namely, the sodium equations of state (EOS) and the sodium combustion (NAC) package within MELCOR. By analyzing the AB5 and AB6 experiments with and without the NAC package, sodium specificity for spray combustion and aerosol formation as well as speciation of the combustion products are reviewed with the new packages. This effort provides code users with a demonstration of the current code capabilities. This report provides the current best practices for the NAC package as well as a discussion of any issues observed while performing the presented analyses.

Advancing our understanding of instabilities in high-energy-density systems through the study of benchmark datasets with advanced modeling tools

Numerous types of pulsed power driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high energy density (HED) systems rely on implosion stability to achieve desired temperatures, pressures, and densities. Sandia National Laboratories Pulsed Power Sciences Center’s main ICF platform, Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF), suffers from implosion instabilities which limit attainable fuel conditions and can compromise fuel confinement. This Truman Fellowship research primarily focused on computationally exploring (a) methods for improving our understanding of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities that form during cylindrical liner implosions, (b) methods for mitigating implosion instabilities, particularly those that degrade performance of MagLIF targets, and (c) novel MagLIF target designs intended to improve target performance primarily via enhanced implosion stability. Several multi-dimensional computational tools were used, including the magnetohydrodynamics code ALEGRA, the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code HYDRA, and the magnetohydrodynamics code KRAKEN. This research succeeded in executing and analyzing simulations of automagnetizing liner implosions, shockless MagLIF implosions, dynamic screw pinch driven cylindrical liner implosions, and cylindrically convergent HED instability studies. The methods and tools explored and developed in this Truman Fellowship research have been published in several peer-reviewed journal articles and will serve as useful contributions to the fields of pulsed power science and engineering, particularly pertaining to pulsed power ICF and HED science.

Verification and Benchmarking of High Fidelity Physics Peat Smoldering Model

Peat fires are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The estimates of these emissions currently contain major uncertainties, due to the difficulty of determining the mass of peat burned in a fire. To address these uncertainties, we develop a computational physics-based peat smoldering model, which will be leveraged for high-fidelity quantitative estimates of peat fire emissions relevant to climate change. We present the verification of the 2-D axisymmetric model, a first step towards developing a full 3-D model. Verification includes the solution verification against a literature model for the 0-D smoldering case and verification of the heat transfer problem in 1-D and 2-D. Also presented is the effect of reaction mechanism on the smoldering model, for which we found a relatively simple three-step reaction mechanism is able to capture key behavior. These verification results provide the foundation for moving forward with validation against experimental data of the 2-D model.
