Heat detection and compositions and devices therefor

Temperature change of a substrate such as a microelectronic component is sensed and detected by means of a mixture of a weak molecular complex of an electron donor compound such as an organic amine and an electron acceptor compound such as nitroaromatic compound. The mixture is encapsulated in a clear binder such as a vinyl resin.

Some recent developments in spacecraft environmental control/life support subsystems

The subsystems considered include a flash evaporator for heat rejection, a regenerable carbon dioxide and humidity control subsystem, an iodinating subsystem for potable water, a cabin contaminant control subsystem, and a wet oxidation subsystem for processing spacecraft wastes. The flash evaporator discussed is a simple unit which efficiently controls life support system temperatures over a wide range of heat loads. For certain advanced spacecraft applications the control of cabin carbon dioxide and humidity can be successfully achieved by a regenerable solid amine subsystem.

Oparin and the origin of life - Cosmological considerations

The question of the origin of life is examined on a cosmological scale from early observations made by Oparin. Even by a comparison of the amount of data presently available from telescopic and spacecraft observations Oparin's conclusions have been confirmed. The concept of panspermia is rejected and details of the role of carbon on earth are presented. Formation of C2, CN and CH is explained and various aspects of the atmospheres of planets are considered. Finally, the origin of amides, amines and other nitrogenous derivatives from hydrocarbons is discussed.

Purines and triazines in the Murchison meteorite

Two samples of the Murchinson C2 chondrite were analyzed for organic nitrogen compounds, using mass spectrometry in combination with paper and thin-layer chromatography. Under mild extraction conditions (water or formic acid), only alphatic amines and some alkylpyridines were seen. Drastic extraction conditions (hot 3-6 M HCL) a variety of nitrogen compounds appeared, including adenine (15 ppm), guanine (5ppm), melamine (20 ppm), cyanuric acid (20 to 30 ppm), guanylurea (30 to 45 ppm), and urea (25 ppm). It appears that these compounds are present mainly in macromolecular material. Failure of other investigators to identify these compounds in carboneceous chondrites is attributed to inadequate extraction conditions (water and formic acid rather than HCl).

Isomer effects on polyimide properties

Polyimide polymers which are thermally stable and processable are developed. The addition of alkyl substituents to an aromatic ring in the polymer backbone is examined along with polyimide precursor amines containing functional groups that allow for post-cure crosslinking. The synthesis of key monomers is reported, including 2,4,6-tris (m-aminobenzyl) 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene and 2,4,6-tris (p-aminobenzyl) 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene. The preparation of a key monomer, 2,5,3-triamino benzophenone, is reported.

The development of low temperature curing adhesives

An approach for the development of a practical low temperature (293 K-311 K/68 F-100 F) curing adhesive system based on a family of amide/ester resins was studied and demonstrated. The work was conducted on resin optimization and adhesive compounding studies. An improved preparative method was demonstrated which involved the reaction of an amine-alcohol precursor, in a DMF solution with acid chloride. Experimental studies indicated that an adhesive formulation containing aluminum powder provided the best performance when used in conjunction with a commercial primer.

Effect of ester impurities in PMR-polyimide resin

Spectral and chomatographic studies were conducted which established the presence of tri- and tetraester impurities in aged monomer solutions employed in fabrication of PMR-polyimide resin composites. The equilibrium constant and apparent rate of the esterification were determined. It was demonstrated, using differential scanning calorimetry, that the ortho-ester moiety of these impurities does not completely react at typical cure conditions. It is concluded that voids formed in composites fabricated with aged monomer solution are due to gaseous decomposition products evolved by ester impurities and/or unreacted amine during elevated temperature post-cure treatment.

Geochemistry of biomolecules

A highly sensitive fluorometric technique is developed for the determination of biological and geo-organic compounds in ancient sediments and extraterrestrial samples. This technique is used to establish chemical evidence for fossil pigments in an extraterrestrial sample. Also developed is a highly sensitive and specific fluorometric method for the determination of total primary amine nitrogen in soil samples.

Performance of filament-wound vessels from an organic fiber in several epoxy matrices

A study was carried out to select a state-of-the-art epoxy for wet filament winding. Ten epoxy systems were used to filament wind pressure vessels with a high-modulus, high-strength organic fiber. Data are reported on vessel performance, fiber strand strengths, and shear strengths for the different systems. Using our criteria (processibility, neat resin properties, and vessel performance), we find that an epoxy system based on the rubber-modified bis-phenol-F resin, diluted with vinyl cyclohexane dioxide and cured with mixed aromatic amines, can easily replace bis-phenol-A epoxies diluted with bis-(2, 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether (such as ERL 2256 epoxy of Union Carbide) with comparable overall performance.

Photosynthesis of organic compounds in the atmosphere of Jupiter

An efficient conversion of CH4 to hydrocarbons and HCN takes place when NH3 is photolysed in the presence of CH4, H2, and He using a 184.9 nm light source. The extent of NH3 decomposition after a 1 hr exposure was determined spectrophotometrically; CH4, N2, and C2 and C3 hydrocarbons were detected and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Photolysis of one molar equivalent of NH3 results in the loss of 0.84 molar equivalent of CH4, which apparently reacts with hot hydrogen atoms produced by photolysis. The 8% of the NH3 which is not converted to N2 probably is converted to organic amines and nitrile derivatives. The results indicate that NH3 photolysis is a highly probable mechanism for the conversion of methane to more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, and predict the occurrence of HCN, NH2NH2, and higher hydrocarbons in the Jovian atmosphere above the NH3 clouds.

Unified Mars detection system

A life-detection system is described which is designed to detect and characterize possible Martian biota and to gather information about the chemical environment of Mars, especially the water and amino acid contents of the soil. The system is organized around a central mass spectrometer that can sensitively analyze trace gases from a variety of different experiments. Some biological assays and soil-chemistry tests that have been performed in the laboratory as typical experiment candidates for the system are discussed, including tests for soil-organism metabolism, measurements of soil carbon contents, and determinations of primary aliphatic amines (amino acids and protein) in soils. Two possible test strategies are outlined, and the operational concept of the detection system is illustrated. Detailed descriptions are given for the mass spectrometer, gas inlet, incubation box, test cell modules, seal drive mechanism, soil distribution assembly, and electronic control system.

Advanced helium regulator for a fluorine propellant system

The space storable propulsion module is an advanced high performance (375 seconds Isp minimum) planetary spacecraft propulsion system with a mission life of 5-10 years. The propellants used are liquid fluorine and amine fuel. This application requires high pressure regulator accuracy to optimize propellant depletion characteristics. An advanced regulator concept was prepared which is compatible with both fuel and oxidizer and which features design concepts such as redundant bellows, all-metallic/ceramic construction, friction-free guidance of moving parts and gas damping. Computer simulation of the propulsion module performance over two mission profiles indicated satisfactory minimization of those propellant residual requirements imposed by regulator performance variables.

Low cost silicon solar array project. Task 1: Establishment of the feasibility of a process capable of low cost, high volume production of silane, SiH4

The kinetics of the redistribution of dichlorosilane and trichlorosilane vapor over a tertiary amine ion exchange resin catalyst were investigated. The hydrogenation of SiCl4 to form HSiCl3 and the direct synthesis of H2SiCl2 from HCl gas and metallurgical silicon metal were also studied. The purification of SiH4 using activated carbon adsorbent was studied along with a process for storing SiH4 absorbed on carbon. The latter makes possible a higher volumetric efficiency than compressed gas storage. A mini-plant designed to produce ten pounds per day of SiH4 is described.

Storage Stability and Improvement of Intermediate Moisture Foods

Shelf life tests are used to estimate the rate of nonenzymatic browning; however, controlling the reducing sugar levels below 23:1 molar ratio to amines, slows the rate. In addition, liquid glycols surpress browning. The protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis W can be used to estimate nutrition losses during browning. At high temperatures (80 to 120 C) used in processing intermediate moisture foods (IMF), vitamin C destruction shifts to a zero order mechanism. BHA and BHT are the most effective antioxidants against rancidity. In shelf life testing however, 45 C should be the maximum temperature used. Water binding agents are studied. The five isotherms of thirteen humectants were determined. The results show that neither the method of addition nor sequence of addition affects the a sub u lowering ability of these humectants. Results were used to formulate shelf stable IMF processed cheese foods with at least four months shelf life.
