Reversible ratchet effects in a narrow superconducting ring

We study the ratchet effect in a narrow pinning-free superconductive ring based on time-dependent GinzburgLandau (TDGL) equations. Voltage responses to external dc and ac currents at various magnetic fields are studied. Due to asymmetric barriers for flux penetration and flux exit in the ring-shaped superconductor, the critical current above which the flux-flow state is reached, as well as the critical current for the transition to the normal state, are different for the two directions of applied current. Furthermore, these effects cooperatively cause ratchet signal reversal at high magnetic fields, which has not been reported to date in a pinning-free system. The ratchet signal found here is larger than those induced by asymmetric pinning potentials. Our results also demonstrate the feasibility of using mesoscopic superconductors to employ a superconducting diode effect in versatile superconducting devices.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Field-induced intermediate ordered phase and anisotropic interlayer interactions in α-RuCl 3

In α-RuCl 3 , an external magnetic field applied within the honeycomb plane can induce a transition from a magnetically ordered state to a disordered state that is potentially related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. In zero field, single crystals with minimal stacking faults display a low-temperature state with in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic order and a three-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. In this work, we present angle-dependent magnetization, ac susceptibility, and thermal transport data that demonstrate the presence of an additional intermediate-field ordered state at fields below the transition to the disordered phase. Neutron-diffraction results show that the magnetic structure in this phase is characterized by a six-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Theoretically, the intermediate ordered phase can be accounted for by including spin-anisotropic couplings between the layers in a three-dimensional spin model. Together, this demonstrates the importance of interlayer exchange interactions in α-RuCl 3 .

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

Campbell penetration depth in low carrier density superconductor YPtBi

Magnetic penetration depth, λ m , was measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field in single crystals of low carrier density superconductor YPtBi by using a tunnel-diode oscillator technique. Measurements in zero DC magnetic field yield London penetration depth, λ L ( T ) , but in the applied field the signal includes the Campbell penetration depth, λ C ( T ) , which is the characteristic length of the attenuation of small excitation field, H AC , into the Abrikosov vortex lattice due to its elasticity. Whereas the magnetic field dependent λ C exhibit λ C ~ B p with p = 1 / 2 in most of the conventional and unconventional superconductors, we found that p ≈ 0.23 << 1 / 2 in YPtBi due to rapid suppression of the pinning strength. From the measured λ C ( T , H ) , the critical current density is j c ≈ 40 A / cm 2 at 75 mK. We find that this is orders of magnitude lower than that of conventional superconductors of comparable T c .

Room-temperature large magnetoelectricity in a transition metal doped ferroelectric perovskite

There is increasing interest in novel magnetoelectric (ME) materials that exhibit robust ME coupling at room-temperature (RT) for advanced memory, energy, spintronics, and other multifunctional device applications, by making use of the ability to control polarization with a magnetic field and/or magnetization via an electric field. Obtaining ME materials with strong ME coupling, understanding the origin, and manipulating its processing along with composition to realize large ME coefficients at RT constitute an important step in multiferroic research. To address this, we have investigated the multiferroic and ME properties of Ni-doped Pb(Zr 0.20 Ti 0.80 )O 3 (PZT). We find that the ferroelectric (T C ~ 700 K) and weak ferromagnetic (~ 602 K) phase transitions of Ni-doped PZT are well above RT, leading to a strong ME coupling coefficient (α E,31 ) of 11.7 mVcm -1 Oe -1 (H ac = 1 Oe and f = 1 kHz). While X-ray diffraction suggests a single-phase material, high resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals regions with and without Ni present; thus magnetoelectric coupling between two phases is possible. First-principle calculations suggest the (Ni Pb ) × defect is likely to be responsible for the experimental observed magnetism and ME coupling in Ni-doped PZT. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Ni-doped PZT exhibits low loss tangent, low leakage current, large saturation polarization and weak ferromagnetism. Ultimately, our work demonstrates that Ni-doped PZT is a cost-effective RT multiferroic with strong ME coupling.

Spatially inhomogeneous superconductivity in UTe 2

The newly discovered superconductor UTe 2 is a strong contender for a topological spin-triplet state wherein a multicomponent order parameter arises from two nearly degenerate superconducting states. A key issue is whether both of these states intrinsically exist at ambient pressure. Through thermal expansion and calorimetry, we show that UTe 2 at ambient conditions exhibits two detectable transitions only in some samples, and the size of the thermal expansion jump at each transition varies when the measurement is performed in different regions of the sample. This result indicates that the two transitions arise from two spatially separated regions that are inhomogeneously mixed throughout the volume of the sample, each with a discrete superconducting transition temperature (T c ). Notably, samples with higher T c only show a single transition at ambient pressure. Above 0.3 GPa, however, two transitions are invariably observed in ac calorimetry. Our results not only point to a nearly vertical line (constant pressure) in the pressure-temperature phase diagram but also provide a consistent scenario for the sample dependence of UTe 2 .

Ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid: The undistorted honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80)

Here, we report the results of our study of a recently synthesized honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80). Single-crystal Na x IrO 3 adopts a honeycomb lattice noticeably without distortions and stacking disorder inherently existent in its sister compound Na 2 IrO 3 . The oxidation state of the Ir ion is a mixed valence state resulting from a majority Ir 5+ (5d 4 ) ion and a minority Ir 6+ (5d 3 ) ion. Na x IrO 3 is a Mott insulator likely with a predominant pseudospin =1 state. It exhibits an effective moment of 1.1 μB/Ir and a Curie-Weiss temperature of –19 K but with no discernible long-range order above 1 K. The physical behavior below 1 K features two prominent anomalies at T h = 0.9 K and T l = 0.12 K in both the heat capacity and AC magnetic susceptibility. Intermediate between T h and T l lies a pronounced temperature linearity of the heat capacity with a large slope of 77 mJ /mole K 2 , a feature expected for highly correlated metals but not at all for insulators. These results along with a comparison drawn with the honeycomb lattices Na 2 IrO 3 and (Na 0.2 Li 0.8 ) 2 IrO 3 point to an exotic ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid.

Analytical WKB theory for high-harmonic generation and its application to massive Dirac electrons

Here we propose an analytical approach to high-harmonic generation (HHG) for nonperturbative low-frequency and high-intensity fields based on the (Jeffreys-)Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation. By properly taking into account Stokes phenomena of WKB solutions, we obtain wave functions that systematically include the repetitive dynamics of production and acceleration of electron-hole pairs and quantum interference due to phase accumulation between different pair production times (Stückelberg phase). Using the obtained wave functions without relying on any phenomenological assumptions, we explicitly compute electric current (including intra- and interband contributions) as the source of HHG for a massive Dirac system in (1+1) dimensions under an ac electric field. We demonstrate that the WKB approximation agrees well with numerical results obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and point out that the quantum interference is important in HHG. We also predict in the deep nonperturbative regime that (1) harmonic intensities oscillate with respect to electric-field amplitude E 0 and frequency Ω with a period determined by the Stückelberg phase, (2) the cutoff order of HHG is determined by 2eE 0 ℏΩ 2 , with e being the electron charge, and that (3) noninteger harmonics, controlled by the Stückelberg phase, appear as a transient effect. Our WKB theory is particularly suited for a parameter regime, where the Keldysh parameter γ = (Δ/2)Ω/eE 0 ,with Δ being the gap size, is small. This parameter regime corresponds to intense lasers in the terahertz regime for realistic massive Dirac materials. Our analysis implies that the so-called HHG plateau can be observed at the terahertz frequency within the current technology.

Thermodynamic insights into the intricate magnetic phase diagram of EuAl 4

The tetragonal intermetallic compound EuAl 4 hosts an exciting variety of low-temperature phases. In addition to a charge density wave below 140 K, four ordered magnetic phases are observed below 15.4 K. Recently, a skyrmion phase was proposed based on Hall effect measurements under a c-axis magnetic field. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the phase transitions in EuAl 4 under c-axis magnetic field. Our dilatometry, heat-capacity, DC magnetometry, AC magnetic susceptibility, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements reveal three magnetic phase transitions not previously reported. The first key result is a detailed H ∥ [001] magnetic phase diagram mapping the seven phases we observe. Second, we identify a high-field phase, phase VII, which directly corresponds to the region were skyrmions have been previously suggested. Our results provide guidance for future studies exploring the complex magnetic interactions and spin structures in EuAl 4 .

Signatures of van Hove singularities in the anisotropic in-plane optical conductivity of the topological semimetal Nb 3 ⁢SiTe 6

In this work, we present a temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy study on the layered topological semimetal Nb 3 ⁢SiTe 6 combined with density-functional theory calculations of the electronic band structure and optical conductivity. Our results reveal an anisotropic behavior of the in-plane (ac-plane) optical conductivity, with three pronounced excitations located at around 0.15, 0.28, and 0.41 eV for the polarization of the incident radiation along the c axis. These excitations are well reproduced in the theoretical spectra. Based on the ab initio results, the excitations around 0.15 and 0.28 eV are interpreted as fingerprints of van Hove singularities in the electronic band structure and compared to the findings for other topological semimetals.

Calorimetric measurement of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in metals

The quasiparticle density of states in correlated and quantum-critical metals directly probes the effect of electronic correlations on the Fermi surface. Measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate provide one such experimental probe of quasiparticle mass through the electronic density of states. By far the most common way of accessing the spin-lattice relaxation rate is via nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance experiments, which require resonant excitation of nuclear spin transitions. Here we report nonresonant access to spin-lattice relaxation dynamics in AC-calorimetric measurements. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is inferred in our measurements from its effect on the frequency dispersion of the thermal response of the calorimeter-sample assembly. Further, we use fast, lithographically defined nanocalorimeters to access the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times in metallic indium from 0.3 to 7 K and in magnetic fields up to 35 T.

Origin of magnetic ordering in half-Heusler RuMnGa

The half-Heusler alloy RuMnGa having valence electron count (VEC) 18 has recently been theoretically proposed to exhibit compensated ferrimagnetic (CFiM) character instead of the expected nonmagnetic ground state. On the other hand, a preliminary experimental study proposed ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. As no half-Heusler system with VEC 18 is known to exhibit magnetic ordering, we have investigated the details of crystal structure and magnetic properties of RuMnGa using a combination of experimental tools, viz., x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, dc and ac susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity and neutron depolarisation measurements. Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron diffraction data suggest single phase nature of the compound with elemental composition RuMn 0.86 Ga 1.14 . We have shown that the system exhibits FM-type ordering owing to the inherent presence of this minor off-stoichiometry, showing very low magnetic moment. Further, the system also exhibits reentrant canonical spin-glass behavior, which is rarely observed in half-Heusler alloys. The temperature coefficient of resistivity changes its sign from negative to positive and further to negative as the temperature decreases.

Optically induced umklapp shift currents in striped cuprates

Motivated by recent experiments that observed low-frequency second-order optical responses in doped striped superconductors, here we investigate the nonlinear electrodynamics of systems exhibiting a charge density wave (CDW) order parameter. Due to the Bragg scattering off the CDW order, an incoming spatially homogeneous electric field in addition to zero momentum current generates umklapp currents that are modulated in space at momenta of the reciprocal CDW lattice. In particular, here we predict and microscopically evaluate the umklapp shift current, a finite momentum analog of the regular shift current which represents the second-order optical process that downconverts homogeneous AC electric field into low-frequency, zero momentum current. Specifically, we evaluate real-time response functions within mean-field theory via the Keldysh technique and use the Peierls substitution to compute observables at finite momenta in lattice models. We find that systems with certain lattice symmetries (such as inversion symmetry), where the regular shift current is disallowed, may give rise to the umklapp one. We apply our framework to investigate lattice symmetries in layered materials with helical-like stripes and show that both types of shift currents provide insight into the nature of intertwined phases of matter. Finally, we discuss the relation of our findings to recent experiments in striped superconductors. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Local distortion driven magnetic phase switching in pyrochlore Yb 2 ( Ti 1 - x Sn x ) 2 O 7

While it is commonly accepted that the disorder induced by magnetic ion doping in quantum magnets usually generates a rugged free-energy landscape resulting in slow or glassy spin dynamics, the disorder/distortion effects associated with nonmagnetic ion sites doping are still illusive. Here, using AC susceptibility measurements, we show that the mixture of Sn/Ti on the nonmagnetic ion sites of pyrochlore Yb 2 ⁢(Ti 1-x⁢ Sn x ) 2⁢ O 7 induces an antiferromagnetic ground state despite both parent compounds, Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Yb 2 ⁢Sn 2⁢ O 7 , order ferromagnetically. Local structure studies through neutron total scattering reveals the local distortion in the nonmagnetic ion sites and its strong correlation with the magnetic phase switching. Further, our study demonstrates the local distortion as induced by the nonmagnetic ion site mixture could be a new path to achieve magnetic phase switching, which has been traditionally obtained by external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure, strain, light, etc.

Vortex phase diagram of the kagome superconductor CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5

The screening response of the kagome superconductor CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 was obtained from high-resolution ac mutual inductance measurements. At zero applied magnetic field and low temperatures, we observe no evidence for gapless quasiparticles, while near T c we find evidence for enhanced fluctuations. A rich vortex state appears above H c⁢1 ≈30 Oe, exhibiting successive emergence of vortex phases. For a fixed magnetic field, lowering the temperature below T c⁡ (H) leads to a wide range of vortex liquid state in a landscape of weak pinning potential, which gives rise to an irreversibility line. Further lowering the temperature, we identify the vortex melting line followed by the peak effect manifested in enhanced vortex pinning strength and critical current. Finally, we suggest that such an unusual behavior, where the peak effect region is fully contained within the vortex lattice state below the irreversibility line, is a consequence of the strong anisotropy and weak bulk pinning in CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 .

Origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity and effect of external pressure on the complex magnetism of the 6⁢ H perovskite Ba 3 ⁢Ho⁢Ru 2⁢ O 9

The compound Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9 magnetically orders at 50 K (T N1 ), followed by another complex magnetic ordering at 10.2 K (T N2 ). The second magnetic phase transition was characterized by the coexistence of two competing magnetic ground states associated with two different magnetic wave vectors (K 1 = 0.5 0 0 and K 2 = 0.25 0.25 0). The multiferroicity and magnetoelectric coupling were predicted below T N2 in these 4d-based materials. Here, in this work, we have discussed the origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity, which is not known yet, and the nature of magnetoelectric domains. We have investigated the compound through time-of-flight neutron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), ac susceptibility, frequency-dependent complex dielectric spectroscopy, and dc magnetization under external pressure. We have demonstrated that the noncollinear structure involving two different magnetic ions, Ru (4d) and Ho (4f), breaks the spatial inversion symmetry via inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction through strong 4d-4f magnetic correlation, which shifts the oxygen atoms and results in nonzero polarization. Such an observation of inverse DM interaction from two different magnetic ions which cause ferroelectricity is rarely observed. The stronger spin-orbit coupling of 4d orbital might play a major role in creating DM interaction of noncollinear spins. We have systematically studied the spin and dipolar dynamics, which exhibit intriguing behavior with shorter coherence lengths of second magnetic phase associated with the k 2 wave vector. The results manifest the development of finite-size magnetoelectric domains instead of true long-range ordering, which justifies the experimentally obtained low value of ferroelectric polarization. The lattice parameters and volume show a sharp anomaly at T N2 obtained by analyzing the temperature-dependence XRD, which is consistent with the ferroelectric transition, predicting a noncentrosymmetric space group, $P\bar{6}2c$, for this compound. Furthermore, we have investigated the effect of external pressure on this complex magnetism. The result reveals an enhancement of ordering temperature by the application of external pressure (~1.6 K/GPa). The external pressure might favor stabilizing the magnetic ground state associated with second magnetic phase. Our study shows an unconventional mechanism of spin-driven ferroelectricity involving inverse DM interaction between Ru (4d) and Ho (4f) magnetic ions due to strong 4d-4f cross coupling.

Magnetic properties of the double trillium lattice antiferromagnet KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3

Trillium lattices formed by corner-shared triangular units are the platform for magnetic frustration in three dimensions. Herein, we report structural and magnetic properties of the Cr-based (S = 3/2) double trillium lattice material KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 studied by x-ray diffraction, dc and ac magnetization, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements complemented by density-functional band-structure calculations. Magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P NMR measurements reveal the magnetic transition at T N⁢1 ≃ 12.5 K in zero field followed by another transition (T N⁢2 ) at low temperatures in weak applied fields. The 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate in the ordered state follows the T 3 behavior indicative of the two-magnon Raman process. Finally, the spin lattice of KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 comprises two crystallographically nonequivalent ferromagnetic sublattices that are coupled antiferromagnetically, thus eliminating frustration in this trillium network and leading to weak ferromagnetism in the vicinity of T N⁢1 .
