Long term spectral irradiance measurements of a 1000-watt xenon arc lamp

Spectral irradiance measurements over the range of 200 to 1060 nm were made on a 1000-watt xenon arc lamp over a period of 1500 hours. Four sets of measurements were made after periods of 70, 525, 1000, and 1500 hours of operation. The lamp (Hanovia Compact Xenon Arc Lamp) was mounted in the NASA Solar Irradiation System. When used in the System, the lamp is used as the radiating source for six test stations. Measurements were made of both the longterm stability (or variation of spectral irradiance as a function of time) and the actual spectral irradiance incident on the test specimen.

Long-term observations of Cygnus X-2 from OSO-7

Results of observations of Cygnus X-2 are reported that were made with an X-ray telescope on board the OSO-7 satellite during the three intervals of January 9-16 and 21-26, 1972, and July 8-11, 1972. Random factor-of-two variations were found in the data. No statistically significant periodic variations were found in the range from 10 hours to 2 days.

Long term behavior of VH cosmic rays as observed in lunar rocks

The depth dependence of fossil tracks in particularly favorable lunar rocks has been used to investigate the constancy of galactic VH nuclei. When dynamic lunar surface processes are taken into account, it is concluded that both the spectral shape and the absolute flux has not changed significantly over the past 50 million years.

On the improper neglect of certain terms in random function theory

This paper presents some exact solutions of problems in random function theory for the purpose of testing the validity of an approximate method known variously in the many different fields of its application as first order smoothing theory, first order cumulant discard, quasilinear theory, or the adiabatic approximation. The hydromagnetic dynamo equations are used here, as particularly appropriate for such an investigation. The calculations show that in one case the exact and approximate solutions agree. In the other case the approximate solution is wrong. Hence, in the absence of a general criterion for validity, a result based on first order smoothing theory is a conjecture rather than a fact. This impacts strongly on much of the recent work on hydromagnetic dynamos.

Intermediate term frequency measurements with the HP computing counter in the USNO clock time system

High precision frequency measurements with various integration times can be made with conventional counters by using variable gate times. The Hewlett-Packard (HP) computing counter allows such measurements over a wide range of frequencies and measurement times. This instrument can also convert period measurements into frequency by means of its arithmetic capabilities: The program library contains programs to facilitate frequency stability measurements in the most direct and convenient way. This method was used as the basis for all time scale computations, until requirements for highest resolution justified the development of an automatic data acquisition system. The phase measurements are now being made with the HP computing counter (with time interval plug-in unit) under program control from the HP System Programmer.

A time-dependent diffusion convection model for the long term modulation of cosmic rays

A model is developed which incorporates to first order the direct effects of the time dependent diffusive propagation of interstellar cosmic rays in a slowly changing interplanetary medium. The model provides a physical explanation for observed rigidity-dependent phase lags in modulated spectra (cosmic ray hysteresis). The average distance to the modulating boundary during the last solar cycle is estimated.

A survey of long term interplanetary magnetic field variations

Interplanetary magnetic field data from 10 IMP, AIMP, and HEOS spacecraft were merged into a composite data set spanning 1963 to 1974. A consideration of the mutual consistency of the individual data sets reveals agreement typically to within 0.2 gamma. Composite data set analysis reveals: (1) whereas the yearly averaged magnitudes of all field vectors show virtually no solar cycle variation, the yearly averaged magnitudes of positive- and negative-polarity field vectors show separate solar cycle variations, consistent with variations in the average azimuthal angles of positive- and negative-polarity field vectors, (2) there is no heliolatitude dependence of long time average field magnitudes, (3) field vectors parallel to the earth-sun line are on the average 1 gamma less in magnitude than field vectors perpendicular to this line, and (4) the heliolatitude-dependent dominant polarity effect exhibits a complex sign reversal in the 1968 to 1971 period and a measure of symmetry in 1972 to 1974 not found in earlier data.

The long term energy problem and aeronautics

The projected increase in energy consumption by transportation in general and civil aviation in particular is directly opposed to the dwindling supplies of natural petroleum crude oil currently used to produce aircraft fuels. This fact dictates the need to develop even more energy conservative aircraft and propulsion systems than are currently available and to explore the potential of alternative fuels to replace the current petroleum derived hydrocarbons. Advances in technology are described in the areas of improved component efficiency, aircraft and engine integration, control systems, and advanced lightweight materials that are needed to maximize performance and minimize fuel usage. Also, improved turbofan and unconventional engine cycles which can provide significant fuel usage reductions are described. These advancements must be accomplished within expected environmental constraints such as noise and pollution limits. Alternative fuels derived from oil shale and coal are described, and the possible technological advancements needed to use these fuels in aircraft engines are discussed and evaluated with relation to potential differences in fuel characteristics.

Study plan to identify long term national telecommunications need and priorities applying Delphi techniques (handbook)

A handbook that explains the basic Delphi methodology and discusses modified Delphi techniques is presented. The selection of communications experts to participate in a study, the construction of questionnaires on potential communications developments, and requisite technology is treated. No two modified Delphi studies were the same, which reflects the flexibility and adaptability of the technique. Each study must be specifically tailored to a particular case, and consists of seeking a consensus of opinion among experts about a particular subject and attendant conditions that may prevail in the future.

Dynamic analysis of the long-term zonal earth energy budget experiment (LZEEBE) spacecraft

The motions of the flexible LZEEBE spacecraft after injection into a circular orbit were analyzed. The spacecraft consists of three spherical balloons connected to a central hub by three long flexible booms which lie in a plane such that the angle between any pair of booms is 120 degrees. The major torques acting on the spacecraft are gravity-gradient torques and torques due to solar radiation pressure acting on the balloons which have different reflective properties. A development of the equations of motion is presented. Computer simulations indicate that the spacecraft will have random motion, provided the injection into orbit does not create conditions favorable to gravity-gradient capture.

New results from long-term observations of Cyg X-1

Observations of Cyg X-1 between October 1974 and July 1975 reveal a persistent 5.6 day modulation of the 3 to 6 keV X-ray intensity, having a minimum in phase with superior conjunction of the HDE 226868 binary system. The modulation is found to be most pronounced just prior to the April-May 1975 increase of Cyg X-1, after which both the modulation and intensity are at their lowest values for the entire duration of the observations. These data imply that the X-ray emission from Cyg X-1 arises from the compact member of HDE 226868, and that the increase of April-May 1975 may have represented the depletion of accreting material which was not mixed into a cylindrically symmetric accretion disk about the compact member.

Nuclear weapons tests and short-term effects on atmospheric ozone

Observations made when Nimbus 4 passed over a nuclear cloud about three hours after the bomb exploded are presented. Infrared and BUV measurements indicated that the atmospheric ozone level in the area of cloud was significantly less than in areas directly north and south of the cloud. It is noted, however, that it is not possible to state definitively that the ozone depletion was caused by nitrogen oxides released in the nuclear weapons test, and that further observations must be made to clarify the situation.
