Synthesis of LaWN 3 nitride perovskite with polar symmetry

Perovskite structured materials have a variety of uses as photovoltaics, capacitors, and micromechanical actuators, along with other applications. Oxides, halides, and chalcogenides all have large numbers of perovskite structured materials. Examples of perovskite nitrides are conspicuously absent, but Talley et al managed to synthesize one (see the Perspective by Hong). Lanthanum tungsten nitride in the perovskite structure turns out to be piezoelectric, which is ideal for a variety of applications. Perovskite structured nitrides are very attractive because they could easily integrate with the large number of nitride-based semiconducting devices already in use.

Pair wave function symmetry in UTe2 from zero-energy surface state visualization

Although nodal spin-triplet topological superconductivity appears probable in uranium ditelluride (UTe 2 ), its superconductive order parameter Δ k remains unestablished. In theory, a distinctive identifier would be the existence of a superconductive topological surface band, which could facilitate zero-energy Andreev tunneling to an s-wave superconductor and also distinguish a chiral from a nonchiral Δ k through enhanced s-wave proximity. In this study, we used s-wave superconductive scan tips and detected intense zero-energy Andreev conductance at the UTe 2 (0-11) termination surface. Imaging revealed subgap quasiparticle scattering interference signatures with a-axis orientation. The observed zero-energy Andreev peak splitting with enhanced s-wave proximity signifies that Δ k of UTe 2 is a nonchiral state: B 1u , B 2u , or B 3u . However, if the quasiparticle scattering along the a axis is internodal, then a nonchiral B 3u state is the most consistent for UTe 2 .

Transverse Stability in an Alternating Symmetry Planar Dielectric Wakefield Structure

Dielectric Wakefield Acceleration (DWA) is a promising technique for realizing the next generation of linear colliders. It provides access to significantly higher accelerating gradients than traditional radio-frequency cavities. One impediment to realizing a DWA-powered accelerator is the issue of the transverse stability of the beams within the dielectric structure due to short-range wakefields. These short-range wakefields have a tendency to induce a phenomenon known as single-bunch beam breakup, which acts as its name implies and destroys the relevant beam. We attempt to solve this issue by leveraging the quadrupole mode excited in a planar dielectric structure and then alternating the orientation of said structure to turn an unstable system into a stable one. We examine this issue computationally to determine the limits of stability and based on those simulations describe a future experimental realization of this strategy.

Exotic $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetries, duality, and fractons in 3+1-dimensional quantum field theory

Following our earlier analyses of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories, we study here gapped systems in 3+1 dimensions, which exhibit fractonic behavior. In particular, we present three dual field theory descriptions of the low-energy physics of the X-cube model. A key aspect of our constructions is the use of discontinuous fields in the continuum field theory. Spacetime is continuous, but the fields are not.

Integrability and Symmetries of Classical Geometries

This research project had two major objectives: advancement in constructing quantum theory of gravity and analytical understanding of strongly--coupled systems. The project contributed to advancing quantum theory of gravity by studying dynamics of black holes. A comprehensive analysis of excitations of rotating black holes in arbitrary dimensions has been performed, all solutions of Maxwell's equations as well as their generalizations to arbitrary p-forms in such backgrounds have been constructed, and a significant progress towards extension of these results to gravitational waves has been made. The project also advanced theoretical understanding of strongly-coupled theories by analyzing properties of exactly-solvable (integrable) models. A new method for solving dynamical equations for various fields in a large class of backgrounds without isometries has been developed, and this technique was used to extract spectra of supergravity modes in several integrable string theories. The analytical structure of large classes of integrable string theories has also been analyzed.

The observation of neutrino oscillation confirms neutrinos have mass. The discovery of neutrino oscillation implies nonzero neutrino mass. Search for neutrinoless double beta decay is a probe of Majorana mass.

Searches for Violations of Fundamental Symmetries [Slides]

The Standard Model of Particle Physics is currently the best theory to describe the most basic building blocks of the Universe. However, it does not explain the complete picture. We need physics beyond the Standard Model.
