A prototype high power portable lamp

Portable lighting system serves the combined work and photographic needs of manned spacecraft efforts. This system enables the lamps to be momentarily brightened while the camera shutter is opened. The brightness is adequate for black and white or color photography and yet the increased heat load is nil.

UK-4 prototype spacecraft magnetic tests

The spacecraft was tested in a magnetic test facility which uses a 42 ft. diameter coil system to produce a controlled magnetic field of high uniformity over a large central volume. The primary objectives of the tests were: (1) to determine the permanent, induced, and stray magnetic moments of the spacecraft and to assess its magnetic stability; (2) to evaluate the magnetorquer coil system; and (3) to deperm, compensate, and make other adjustments necessary to achieve satisfactory magnetic characteristics for the spacecraft. The test facility and procedures are described together with the results obtained. In addition, the problems encountered during the tests and the significance of the test findings are discussed.

Design and fabrication of prototype system for early warning of impending bearing failure

Ball bearing performance tests run on several identical ball bearings under a variety of load, speed, temperature, and lubrication conditions are reported. Bearing temperature, torque, vibration, noise, strain, cage speed, etc., were monitored to establish those measurements most suitable as indicators of ball bearing health. Tape records were made under steady-state conditions of a variety of speeds and loads. Sample sections were selected for narrowband spectral analysis with a real time analyzer. An artificial flow was created across the inner race surface of one bearing using an acid etch technique to produce the scratch. Tape records obtained before and after established a characteristic frequency response that identifies the presence of the flow. The signals found most useful as indicators of performance degradation were ultrasonic outputs.

Prototype data terminal-multiplexer/demultiplexer

The design and operation of a quad redundant data terminal and a multiplexer/demultiplexer (MDU) is described. The most unique feature is the design of the quad redundant data terminal. This is one of the few designs where the unit is fail/op, fail/op, fail/safe. Laboratory tests confirm that the unit will operate satisfactorily with the failure of three out of four channels. Although the design utilizes state-of-the-art technology, the waveform error checks, the voting techniques, and the parity bit checks are believed to be used in unique configurations. Correct word selection routines are also novel. The MDU design, while not redundant, utilizes, the latest state-of-the-art advantages of light coupler and interested amplifiers. Much of the technology employed was an evolution of prior NASA contracts related to the Addressable Time Division Data System. A good example of the earlier technology development was the development of a low level analog multiplexer, a high level analog multiplexer, and a digital multiplexer. A list of all drawings is included for reference and all schematic, block and timing diagrams are incorporated.

Fatigue design procedure for the American SST prototype

For supersonic airline operations, significantly higher environmental temperature is the primary new factor affecting structural service life. Methods for incorporating the influence of temperature in detailed fatigue analyses are shown along with current test indications. Thermal effects investigated include real-time compared with short-time testing, long-time temperature exposure, and stress-temperature cycle phasing. A method is presented which allows designers and stress analyzers to check fatigue resistance of structural design details. A communicative rating system is presented which defines the relative fatigue quality of the detail so that the analyst can define cyclic-load capability of the design detail by entering constant-life charts for varying detail quality. If necessary then, this system allows the designer to determine ways to improve the fatigue quality for better life or to determine the operating stresses which will provide the required service life.

Task 2: Flight prototype system design report, pulsed plasma solid propellant microthruster for the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite

Design details are presented of the solid propellant pulsed plasma microthruster which was analyzed during the Task 1 effort. The design details presented show that the inherent functional simplicity underlying the flight proven LES-6 design can be maintained in the SMS systems design even with minimum weight constraints imposed. A 1293 hour uninterrupted vacuum test with the engineering thermal model, simulating an 18.8 to 33 g environment of the propellant, its feed system and electrode assembly, revealed that program thruster performance requirements could be met. This latter g environment is a more severe environment than will be ever encountered in the SMS spacecraft.

Central Atlantic regional ecological test site: A prototype regional environment information system

The author has identified the following significant results. Prior to the actual testing of data from ERTS-1, the principal scientific results to date are the establishment of a model or design for a regional land use information system based on remote sensor data and a firm establishment of the RB-57 type high altitude aircraft data base as an important tool in land use mapping. Preliminary user evaluations of the resulting land use data have been favorable, and one of the states, Maryland, has adopted the USGS-GAP land use system as a first step towards mapping their entire state. The State is funding an extension (to the west) of the part of Maryland not covered by CARETS (Central Atlantic Regional Ecological Test Site), using the GAP land use classification and mapping procedures.

Space station prototype environmental/thermal control and life system - A current overview.

The Environmental Thermal Control and Life Support System (ETC/LSS) for a space station has progressed through the design phase into the fabrication of hardware. An overview of the current status of this program is presented with emphasis on the impact and implementation of commonality and maintainability concepts as well as the interface with an on-board checkout system. The programmatic techniques and procedural modifications employed and anticipated are treated.
