Multi-scale transport in the DIII-D ITER baseline scenario with direct electron heating and projection to ITER

Multi-scale fluctuations measured by turbulence diagnostics spanning long and short wavelength spatial scales impact energy confinement and the scale-lengths of plasma kinetic profiles in the DIII-D ITER baseline scenario with direct electron heating. Contrasting discharge phases with ECH + neutral beam injection (NBI) and NBI only at similar rotation reveal higher energy confinement and lower fluctuations when only NBI heating is used. Modeling of the core transport with TGYRO using the TGLF turbulent transport model and NEO neoclassical transport reproduces the experimental profile changes upon application of direct electron heating and indicates that multi-scale transport mechanisms are responsible for changes in the temperature and density profiles. Intermediate and high-k fluctuations appear responsible for the enhanced electron thermal flux, and intermediate-k electron modes produce an inward particle pinch that increases the inverse density scale length. Projection to ITER is performed with TGLF and indicates a density profile that has a finite scale length due to intermediate-k electron modes at low collisionality and increases the fusion gain. For a range of E×B shear, the dominant mechanism that increases fusion performance is suppression of outward low-k particle flux and increased density peaking.

Liapunov stability analysis of hybrid dynamical systems with multi-elastic domains.

This paper presents a Liapunov stability theory applicable to hybrid systems with multi-elastic domains. The mathematical formulation consists of a simultaneous set of ordinary and partial differential equations. A new stability theorem, particularly suited to such hybrid systems, is introduced. To predict the system stability by means of the theorem, it is necessary to construct a functional k, where k is free of spatial derivatives and bounding the Hamiltonian H from below. The conditions under which the construction of such a functional is possible are shown. As an application of the theory, the attitude stability of an earth-pointing satellite with multi-elastic domains is investigated and closed-form stability criteria derived.

Multi-point release mechanism

A multi-point release mechanism used on the communications technology satellite. The mechanism is designed to jettison one large panel and to release a second panel; both panels have independent multi-point attachments to the spacecraft and require to be released in sequence. The solar array is stowed concertina fashion under 2 psi pressure to ensure that no movement occurs between the stowed folds of the array during the launch. One pair of linear pyrotechnic-actuators releases both the JBSA and the pressure plate via the release mechanism. This release mechanism has successfully passed qualification level vibration launch and thermal environment tests and has accumulated to date close to 30 successful releases.

Analysis of multispectral signatures and investigation of multi-aspect remote sensing techniques

Two major aspects of remote sensing with multispectral scanners (MSS) are investigated. The first, multispectral signature analysis, includes the effects on classification performance of systematic variations found in the average signals received from various ground covers as well as the prediction of these variations with theoretical models of physical processes. The foremost effects studied are those associated with the time of day airborne MSS data are collected. Six data collection runs made over the same flight line in a period of five hours are analyzed, it is found that the time span significantly affects classification performance. Variations associated with scan angle also are studied. The second major topic of discussion is multi-aspect remote sensing, a new concept in remote sensing with scanners. Here, data are collected on multiple passes by a scanner that can be tilted to scan forward of the aircraft at different angles on different passes. The use of such spatially registered data to achieve improved classification of agricultural scenes is investigated and found promising. Also considered are the possibilities of extracting from multi-aspect data, information on the condition of corn canopies and the stand characteristics of forests.

Error analysis of multi-conic techniques

A general error analysis of three recently developed multi-conic methods of three-body trajectory integration has been carried out. Single-step error functions for position and velocity have been derived as Taylor series in powers of the time step and also in integral form. These error functions are used to investigate the relative accuracy of the three methods in various regions of the earth-moon space and to provide a method of variable step size control for the trajectory integration procedure. Numerical results are used to compare the multi-step performance of the methods for both large and small step sizes.

Indirect synthesis of multi-degree of freedom transient systems

An indirect synthesis method is used in the efficient optimal design of multi-degree of freedom, multi-design element, nonlinear, transient systems. A limiting performance analysis which requires linear programming for a kinematically linear system is presented. The system is selected using system identification methods such that the designed system responds as closely as possible to the limiting performance. The efficiency is a result of the method avoiding the repetitive systems analyses accompanying other numerical optimization methods.

Multi-aspect techniques in remote sensing

Multi-aspect techniques, which use multispectral scanner information collected from two or more different view angles for each spatial element, are discussed. Empirical recognition results obtained with various combinations of information channels are presented. Theoretical calculations of multi-aspect reflectances of corn fields also are analyzed and compared with empirical data. Also presented is a brief comparison between recognition processing and scene attribute estimation techniques for extracting information from multispectral scanner data. One method for improving information extraction by employing a post-recognition attribute estimation procedure is suggested.

The potential of multi-port optical memories in digital computing

A high-capacity memory with a relatively high data transfer rate and multi-port simultaneous access capability may serve as the basis for new computer architectures. The implementation of a multi-port optical memory is discussed. Several computer structures are presented that might profitably use such a memory. These structures include (1) a simultaneous record access system, (2) a simultaneously shared memory computer system, and (3) a parallel digital processing structure.

The transonic multi-foil Augmentor-Wing

The paper describes the development of a transonic blown multi-foil Augmentor-Wing airfoil section that has a thickness/chord (t/c) value of 0.18. In comparison with an unblown single-foil supercritical section of the same overall t/c the new multi-foil section is characterized by an increased drag rise Mach number, increased buffet boundaries, and a reduction in 'effective' drag due to blowing. Potential advantages of the Augmentor-Wing are considered and the testing of three high-speed models in a trisonic pressurized wind tunnel (possessing a two-dimensional transonic insert) is discussed. The data indicate that a very thick wing is feasible since separations toward the rear of the main foil can be controlled both by shroud location and augmentor blowing.

Development of an automated multi-stage modal synthesis system for NASTRAN

A mode synthesis development to be scheduled in the NASTRAN multi-level substructuring system for general dynamics applications is described. The method combines the better features of several state of the art mode synthesis techniques, yet is general enough to provide for any arbitrary combination of boundary degrees of freedom and normal mode boundary conditions. Normal modes or complex eigenvectors may be used in the definition of a structure component which may be combined with other components of any type. Combination structures fabricated from component modes may be processed as normal substructures, including further multi-stage mode synthesis reductions. Included are discussions of the user control of the system and advantages in actual application.

Numerical simulation of advection fog formation on multi-disperse aerosols due to combustion-related pollutants

The effects of multi-disperse distribution of the aerosol population are presented. Single component and multi-component aerosol species on the condensation/nucleation processes which affect the reduction in visibility are described. The aerosol population with a high particle concentration provided more favorable conditions for the formation of a denser fog than the aerosol population with a greater particle size distribution when the value of the mass concentration of the aerosols was kept constant. The results were used as numerical predictions of fog formation. Two dimensional observations in horizontal and vertical coordinates, together with time-dependent measurements were needed as initial values for the following physical parameters: (1)wind profiles; (2) temperature profiles; (3) humidity profiles; (4) mass concentration of aerosol particles; (5) particle size distribution of aerosols; and (6) chemical composition of aerosols. Formation and dissipation of advection fog, thus, can be forecasted numerically by introducing initial values obtained from the observations.

Preliminary design trade-offs for a multi-mission stored cryogen cooler

Preliminary design studies were performed for a multi-mission solid cryogen cooler having a wide range of application for both the shuttle sortie and free flyer missions. This multi-mission cooler (MMC) is designed to be utilized with various solid cryogens to meet a wide range of instrument cooling from 10 K (with solid hydrogen) to 90 K. The baseline cooler utilizes two stages of solid cryogen and incorporates an optional, higher temperature third stage which is cooled by either a passive radiator or a thermoelectric cooler. The MMC has an interface which can accommodate a wide variety of instrument configurations. A shrink fit adapter is incorporated which allows a drop-in instrument integration. The baseline design provides cooling of approximately 1 watt over a 60 to 100 K temperature range and about 0.5 watts from 15 to 60 K for a one year lifetime. For low cooling loads and with use of the optional radiator shield, cooling lifetimes as great as 8 years are predicted.

Analysis and design of an adaptive multi-loop controlled two winding buck/boost regulator

Small signal low frequency linear average model is derived for a multi-loop controlled two-winding buck/boost converter employing average techniques and the describing function method. The model reveals that a well-designed multi-loop control can provide a second-order zero adaptive to output filter parameter changes due to component tolerances, temperature changes, aging, and the effect of duty cycle modulation. It also can provide stabilization effect by shifting the positive zero to the left-half S-plane. Design guidelines are formulated to optimize regulator-loop dependent characteristics.

Subjective scaling of mental workload in a multi-task environment

Those factors in a multi-task environment that contribute to the operators' "sense" of mental workload were identified. The subjective judgment as conscious experience of mental effort was decided to be the appropriate method of measurement. Thurstone's law of comparative judgment was employed in order to construct interval scales of subjective mental workload from paired comparisons data. An experimental paradigm (Simulated Multi-Task Decision-Making Environment) was employed to represent the ideal experimentally controlled environment in which human operators were asked to "attend" to different cases of Tulga's decision making tasks. Through various statistical analyses it was found that, in general, a lower number of tasks-to-be-processed per unit time (a condition associated with longer interarrival times), results in a lower mental workload, a higher consistency of judgments within a subject, a higher degree of agreement among the subjects, and larger distances between the cases on the Thurstone scale of subjective mental workload. The effects of various control variables and their interactions, and the different characteristics of the subjects on the variation of subjective mental workload are demonstrated.

Electrical properties of multi p-n junction devices

The electrical properties of multi p-n junction devices are analyzed. It is found that this type of device possesses bistable characteristics similar to that of a Shockley diode and thus provides an alternative realization of devices for switching applications. The inherently greater current gains involved in the operations of such a device yield in principle higher breakover voltages and higher holding currents. Furthermore, the incorporation of heterostructures in this device introduces a new degree of freedom in tailoring their switching characteristics. Multi p-n heterojunction devices operating as SCR lasers were fabricated, and the experimental results are presented.

Finite amplitude Alfven waves in a multi-ion plasma - Propagation, acceleration, and heating

An expression is derived for the wave action flux of finite-amplitude Alfven waves in a multi-ion plasma. The expression is valid in the presence of dissipative forces and permits an arbitrary angle between the average magnetic field and the wave vector. Applying the conservation of wave action and the first law of thermodynamics yields, for a multi-ion plasma, an expression for the spatial evolution of Alfven wave amplitude in the absence of dissipation. It also gives the relationship between the wave amplitude and the dissipative heating, as well as an expression for the acceleration of an ion species by finite-amplitude Alfven waves. It is pointed out that the acceleration comprises a nondissipative wave pressure that is identical to that derived previously under more restrictive conditions and a new term giving the acceleration that must accompany dissipative heating. The results are discussed in the context of the observations of heavy ions in the solar wind.
