Long term oxidation of NiCoCrAlY coated Ni-based superalloys: A comparison of observed and simulated interdiffusion

Lifetimes of MCrAlY-type coatings can easily surpass 25 kh when the criteria of ß-depletion is used. To reduce experimental effort, it’s necessary to develop models capable of simulating interdiffusion and oxidation. In the present study, NiCoCrAlY coatings were high velocity oxyfuel deposited on PWA 1483, MARM247, and CMSX-4 substrates, and samples were exposed at 900 °C for 5–20 kh in air+10 vol%H 2 O to study interdiffusion rates. Here, Thermo-Calc/DICTRA was used to reproduce the observed differences, and microstructures were compared. Based on the agreement between calculated and observed rates, simulations were projected past the experimental exposures, utilizing ß-depletion as lifetime criteria.

Cooperation or Rivalry? Impact of alternative development pathways on India's long-term electricity generation and associated water demands

The world has witnessed a significant shift in the last decade in the way countries interact with each other. A cooperation based international paradigm is being challenged by countries engaging in rivalry with each other in the name of their national interests. What developmental pathway the world charts in the future is going to be path defining for global energy and emissions use. India, expected to play a critical role in the emissions mitigation debate, would contribute to and would be impacted by these pathways. In India specific literature, however, little attention has been paid to development pathways related uncertainties and their impact on energy futures. We seek to address this gap by modelling India's electricity futures and associated water demands under different development pathways. Our analysis shows that alternative development pathways would have significantly different implications for the energy access, electricity generation mix, associated water withdrawals, and carbon dioxide emissions in India. We conclude by arguing that energy, emissions and water policies should be conceived with an explicit understanding of uncertainties related to potential development pathways that the world and India can chart.

Chemical stability and long-term cell performance of low-cobalt, Ni-Rich cathodes prepared by aqueous processing for high-energy Li-Ion batteries

Cobalt content in Li-ion battery cathodes has become a top concern due to its price volatility and limited source availability. Low-cobalt, Ni-rich active materials are promising candidates for next-generation cathodes due to their high capacities, and water-based processing of these materials can further reduce both cost and environmental impact. We systematically evaluated the water compatibility of four different LiNi x Mn 1-x-y Co y O 2 (NMC) powders with increasing nickel contents. Comprehensive characterization verified there is no major change to their bulk structures, and only slight surface modifications related to the removal of contaminant species. For the first time, we demonstrate that LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC 811) cathodes can be formulated in water and cycled 1000 times in full pouch cells with excellent capacity retention (~70% compared to ~76% for NMP-processed cells). When implemented in future battery production lines, aqueous processing of Ni-rich NMC will simultaneously enable cost reductions and higher cell energy densities.

Evaluating long-term model-based scenarios of the energy system

Energy-economic models are used to provide science-based decision support in a variety of contexts. Analyses using these tools often involve defining a “reference” scenario, which serves as a counterfactual against which alternative scenarios are compared. Evaluating scenarios, including reference scenarios, is critical for establishing the credibility of the analyses these models support. We propose a framework for evaluating energy system scenarios which consists of three parts – a qualitative storyline, quantitative metrics, and evaluation criteria. We apply this framework to the reference scenario for GCAM-USA, a version of the global human-Earth system model GCAM (Global Change Assessment Model) with state-level detail in the United States, focusing on the evolution of the electric power sector. We develop new visual analytic tools to facilitate the evaluation of model outcomes in 51 sub-national regions, and demonstrate how scenario performance can be tracked and compared across four quantifications of the GCAM-USA reference scenario.

Thermal energy storage composites with preformed expanded graphite matrix and paraffin wax for long-term cycling stability and tailored thermal properties

Harvesting solar energy, preventing hot spots in electronics, transport of temperature-sensitive materials, and capture and repurposing of thermal energy require a latent heat thermal energy storage (TES) system to store/discharge heat repeatedly. For the practical application of phase change material (PCM) composites within TES systems, reliable thermal performance throughout its operational lifetime is essential. Nevertheless, the reliability of thermal conductivity in multi-phase composites over relevant numbers (>10 3 ) of melt/freeze cycles has barely been studied, particularly for composites containing fillers for thermal conductivity enhancement. Here, we introduce a preform-type expanded graphite (EG)/paraffin wax composite possessing highly robust heat transfer and storage properties even after 10,000 melt/freeze cycles. To achieve such excellent reliability, comparative studies on the combined influence of fabrication process, particle size, EG vol%, binder amount, and compaction on both magnitude and robustness of thermal conductivity were undertaken. Our parametric study has yielded a trade-off between thermal conductivity and latent heat. Based on our modeling, 20 vol% EG approaches the case where all EG particles are well-connected thermally while 10 vol% EG is close to loosely connected fillers in the matrix. Thermal conductivity of our paraffin composites containing 20 vol% EG (25.1 W·m -1 ·K -1 ) is highest among other EG/paraffin composites without aligned EG in the literature. After 10,000 thermal cycling, negligible conductivity fading was observed for the 10 vol% EG composite, while reduction in latent heat remained within 10% for all 10, 14, 17 and 20 vol% EG samples. Here we anticipate this work provides insight on suitable recipe for desirable magnitude and robustness of thermal conductivity of EG/paraffin composites.
