Thermal evolution of planetary size bodies

The size dependence of planetary thermal evolution is investigated through calculations which take into account the effects of heat source differentiation and convection. The theoretical computations make use of hypothetical bodies for minor planets; Mercury, Venus and Mars are employed to represent the size spectrum of the inner planets. If started at a cold initial condition, an object with a radius less than 1000 km is unlikely to reach melting. Accretional heating, inductive heating and short half-life radioactive heating are among the mechanisms which may produce early melting and differentiation in larger planets. Core formation in Mercury and Venus is also discussed.

A lunar metal core

Recent work generally supports the hypothesis of a centrally condensed lunar core. Data regarding the axial moment on the basis of laser tracking and satellite orbit analyses place an upper limit of about 500 km on an Fe core, or 700 km upon an Fe/FeS core, if differentiation in the lithosphere is ignored. Whether a metallized core exists in the moon has a profound bearing upon the question of the origin of the magnetic fields responsible for the present day magnetization on the lunar surface. Recent efforts to examine in detail signals arising from lunar induction at very low frequency are discussed. The discussion represents an extension of a study reported by Wiskerchen et al. (1976). The present data base consists of all Apollo 12 data which fulfill the requirement that the surface magnetometer be on the sunward side of the moon and at least 10 deg from the lunar optical terminator. It is found that only marginal evidence exists for a metallized core at a radius of 400 km in the moon.

Bioorganic chemistry and the emergence of the first cell

It is suggested that the best way to study the evolution of cells from primordial compounds is to attempt to assemble a protocell, i.e., a primordial cell. Simulation of processes that occurred in archaic times would require inductive reasoning and constructionist techniques rather than the analytic approach in which cell components are separated and studied in isolation. Advantages to primordial life which would result from protocell formation are surveyed, and the proteinoid microsphere, a model of the protocell, is discussed. A photoreactive proteinoid is considered.

System design of the annular suspension and pointing system /ASPS/

This paper presents the control system design for the Annular Suspension and Pointing System. Actuator sizing and configuration of the system are explained, and the control laws developed for linearizing and compensating the magnetic bearings, roll induction motor and gimbal torquers are given. Decoupling, feedforward and error compensation for the vernier and gimbal controllers is developed. The algorithm for computing the strapdown attitude reference is derived, and the allowable sampling rates, time delays and quantization of control signals are specified.

Stress-relieved solder joints

Mechanical stress on solder joints is reduced by procedure for soldering electronic components to circuit boards. Procedure was developed for radio-frequency (RF) strip-line circuits, for which dimensions must be carefully controlled to minimize parasitic capacitance and inductance. Procedure consists of loosening component from its mounting after each lead is soldered relieving induced stresses before next soldering step.

Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of Electroslag Refined Fe-12Ni Alloys

Three Fe-12Ni alloys, individually alloyed with small amounts of V, Ti, and Al, were manufactured through different melting techniques, with special emphasis on electroslag remelting, in order to achieve different levels of metal purity and associated costs. The relative effectiveness of these melting techniques was evaluated from tensile and slow bend fracture toughness behavior at 25 C and -196 C after tempering the test specimens at various temperatures. The best melting procedure was vacuum induction melting (VIM) with or without electroslag remelting (ESR). VIM+ESR is the recommended procedure since ESR provides increased yield of plate product, a reduction of overall manufacturing costs and, depending on the alloy composition, improved tensile and fracture toughness properties.

Miniature implantable ultrasonic echosonometer

A miniature echosonometer adapted for implantation in the interior of an animal for imaging the internal structure of a organ, tissue or vessel is presented. The echosonometer includes a receiver/transmitter circuit which is coupled to an ultrasonic transducer. Power is coupled to the echosonometer by electromagnetic induction through the animal's skin. Imaging signals from the echosonometer are electromagnetically transmitted through the animal's skin to an external readout apparatus.

Power Coupling Alternatives for the NEP Thermionic Power System

Three output power coupling methods which can eliminate the high temperature insulator from the Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) power system are described and estimates of their effects on the NEP system masses and cooling requirements are presented. Nominal 400 kWe power systems using push-pull and flux reset inductive output coupling are shown to have specific masses of 22.2 kg/kWe and 18.8 kg/kWe, respectively. Series connected heat pipe systems, which use the heat pipe-to-heat pipe resistance to isolate converters on adjacent heat pipes, are shown to have specific masses 0.5 to 1.4 kg/kWe lower than the NEP baseline system. Increasing the number and temperature of the heat pipes in the system without changing the electric output reduces the calculated system specific mass only slightly, whereas increasing the output power significantly reduces the specific mass. Estimates of cooling requirements indicate that 11-45 sq m of power conditioning radiator are needed. A possible location for the power conditioning radiator may be in the present location of the kapton sputter shield.

Model for breakdown process in dielectric discharges

A heuristic model to explain the blowoff of charge during an electron-induced dielectric discharge is presented. It is proposed that blowoff of charge is initiated by a punchthrough or a flashover. The discharge time is assumed to be governed by an LC time constant where L is the inductance of the electrons flowing in the branches of the Lichtenberg figures at an electron range below the irradiated surface and C is the capacitance between the trapped electrons and the substrate for the discharged area. Experiments to verify that blowoff is a consequence of punchthrough or flashover and to measure the punchthrough current and the variation of discharge time with the sample area and thickness were conducted.

User's manual for PRESTO: A computer code for the performance of regenerative steam turbine cycles

Standard turbine cycles for baseload power plants and cycles with such additional features as process steam extraction and induction and feedwater heating by external heat sources may be modeled. Peaking and high back pressure cycles are also included. The code's methodology is to use the expansion line efficiencies, exhaust loss, leakages, mechanical losses, and generator losses to calculate the heat rate and generator output. A general description of the code is given as well as the instructions for input data preparation. Appended are two complete example cases.

The communications industry's requirements and interests

Of interest to the communications industry are the amplitude, waveshape, duration and frequency of lightning-originated voltage surges and transients on the communications network, including the distribution system and AC power supply circuits. The cloud-to-ground lightning discharge and its characteristics are thought to be most meaningful. Of specific interest are peak current, waveshape, number of flashes, strokes per flash, and zone of influence. Accurate and meaningful lightning data at the local level (telephone district office) is necessary for a decision on the appropriate protection level. In addition to lightning, the protection engineer must consider other factors such as: AC induction, switching surges, ground potential rise, soil resistivity, bonding and grounding techniques, shielding and isolation, and exposure of the telephone loop.

Kinetics of hydrogen-oxygen and methane-oxygen ignition sensitized by NO or NO2

In a study of methane ignition sensitized by NO2, the induction period chemical kinetics were examined by monitoring reactants and intermediates (CH4, NO2, OH, NO, CO, CO2, and H2O) prior to ignition. Data were obtained at pressure of 2-4 atm, temperatures of 1300-1900 K, equivalence ratios of 0.5-1.0, and NO2 up to 3.4 mole %. A tentative NO2 sensitization mechanism was deduced from the analysis of photometric observations and the comparison of computer modeling with observations.

Infrared detector performance in the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility /SIRTF/

The limitations imposed on infrared detectors for SIRTF are quite different from those imposed on ground-based, balloon-borne, or aircraft-borne systems. The paper examines the limitations and provides performance predictions corresponding to SIRTF conditions. Detector parameters typical of an infrared camera are used. The detector size is taken to be of the order of the diffraction-limited spot, frequency response is taken to correspond to a fraction of a second or less time constant, and spectral definition is provided by multilayer dielectric filters, inductive or capacitive grids, intrinsic absorption, or a combination of these. A nominal 10-micron bandwidth is assumed. The discussion covers atmospheric absorption and emission, zodiacal dust radiance, Shuttle contaminants, telescope self-emission, charged particle radiation, clear environment detector performance, and trapped radiation effects. It is concluded that the SIRTF design and operating conditions will allow current and near-term state-of-the-art detectors to reach their performance limits with SIRTF at a temperature of 10-12 K.

Thermally stable polyimide components for space and commercial applications

The properties and applications of the thermally stable polyimide foams are discussed, together with an investigation of the methods for producing these materials. The qualities of the polyimide foams such as resistance to fire, not emitting smoke below 204 C, not producing incapacitating toxic by-products below 204 C, and resiliency and flexibility from minus 184 C to 315 C are stressed. The thermal, dielectric, induction, and microwave heating methods are discussed, particularly in relation to producing flexible resilient foams, thermal acoustical polyimide foams, and polyimide foam structural materials. It is concluded that the microwave approach shows to be a viable concept for generating flexible, low density cellular materials possessing a homogeneous structure and applicable to the aerospace industry and for commercial uses.

Voltage tunable differential heterodyne spectroscopy in the far-infrared with Josephson junctions

The basic methods of differential heterodyne spectroscopy with Josephson junctions are described. A technique is outlined for bridging the gap between a local oscillator frequency and a signal frequency through the use of a voltage-tunable internal oscillation frequency in a Josephson junction structure. It is shown that an intermediate frequency can be converted to a conveniently low frequency by double frequency conversion carried out directly in a Josephson junction. The expected conversion efficiency is estimated qualitatively. Experiments are discussed in which the differential heterodyne frequency-conversion technique was demonstrated at a wavelength of 0.4 mm and a voltage-tunable oscillation in a double Josephson junction structure was observed, with oscillation line widths as narrow as 0.5 Hz, for a resistance of 3.3 nanohms and an estimated inductance of the order of 1 nH.

The role of O-type neutral lines in magnetic merging during substorms and solar flares

A model has been constructed for the magnetic field configuration of a combination of X- and O-type neutral lines in the middle of the geomagnetic tail. The main feature is a bubble centered on the O-type line, the field lines of which are not connected to the main geomagnetic field. An analytical model of the motion of charged particles in the vicinity of an O-type neutral line, with an electric field aligned parallel to it, has been constructed and analyzed. Finally it is found that two distinct mechanisms of particle acceleration may exist if a substorm is powered by the inductive emf generated when the tail's magnetic field returns to a more dipolelike configuration by flowing through a pair of X- and O-type neutral lines.

Predicting performance of power converters operating with switching frequencies in the vicinity of 100 kHZ

A model describing the turning-on period of a power switching transistor in an energy storage voltage step-up converter is presented. Comparisons between an experimental layout and the circuit model during the turning-on interval demonstrate the ability of the model to closely predict the effects of circuit topology on the performance of the converter. A phenomenon of particular importance that is observed in the experimental circuits and is predicted by the model is the deleterious feedback effect of the parasitic emitter lead inductance on the base current waveform during the turning-on interval.
