Quasars and galaxy formation. I - The z greater than 4 objects

The physical properties of the known quasars with z greater than 4 are examined with particular reference to theories of cosmic structure formation. A 'standard' massive accreting black hole model for quasars is used to calculate the masses, radiative efficiencies, and accretion rates of the observed objects. The masses, densities, cosmological overdensities, and sizes of the accretion fuel reservoirs associated with the quasar black holes are considered, and several indirect arguments are used to connect these quantities to the masses and overdensities of the quasar host objects. Finally, constraints on the epoch of formation of the host objects are discussed. The general conclusion is that the observed quasars with z greater than 4 suggest that the cosmic structure formation was already well advanced at z = 5, when the universe was a small fraction of its present age.

The rate and efficiency of high-mass star formation along the Hubble sequence

Data obtained with IRAS are used to compare and contrast the global star formation rates for a galactic sample which represents essentially all known noninteracting spiral and lenticular galaxies within 40 Mpc. The distribution of 60 micron luminosity is similar for spirals of types Sa-Scd inclusively, although the luminosities of the very early and very late types are, on average, one order of magnitude lower. High-mass star formation rates are similar for early, intermediate, and late type spirals, and the average high-mass star formation rate per unit molecular gas mass is independent of type for spiral galaxies. A remarkable homogeneity exists in the high-mass star-forming capabilities of spiral galaxies, particularly among the Sa-Scd types. The Hubble sequence is therefore not a sequence in the present-day rate or production efficiency of high-mass stars.

Investigations of ice formation in the Space Shuttle Main Engine 0209 main injector coolant cavity

Severe main combustion chamber wall and main injector baffle element deterioration occurred during tests of Space Shuttle Main Engine 0209. One of the possible causes considered is ice formation and blockage of coolant to these components, resulting from the mixing of leaking hot turbine exhaust gas (hydrogen rich steam) and hydrogen coolant in the injector coolant cavity. The plausibility of ice blockage is investigated through simple mixing calculations for hot gas and hydrogen, investigation of condensation and water droplet formation, calculation of the freezing times for droplets, and the prediction of ice layer thicknesses. It is concluded that condensation and droplet formation can occur, and small water droplets that form can freeze very quickly when in contact with the cold coolant cavity surfaces. Copnservative analysis predicts, however, that the maximum thickness of the ice layers formed is too small to result in significant blockage of the coolant flow.

The structure and formation of natural categories

Categorization and concept formation are critical activities of intelligence. These processes and the conceptual structures that support them raise important issues at the interface of cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence. The work presumes that advances in these and other areas are best facilitated by research methodologies that reward interdisciplinary interaction. In particular, a computational model is described of concept formation and categorization that exploits a rational analysis of basic level effects by Gluck and Corter. Their work provides a clean prescription of human category preferences that is adapted to the task of concept learning. Also, their analysis was extended to account for typicality and fan effects, and speculate on how the concept formation strategies might be extended to other facets of intelligence, such as problem solving.

Oxygen in the Martian atmosphere: Regulation of PO2 by the deposition of iron formations on Mars

During Earth's early history, and prior to the evolution of its present day oxygenated atmosphere, extensive iron rich siliceous sedimentary rocks were deposited, consisting of alternating layers of silica (chert) and iron oxide minerals (hematite and magnetite). The banding in iron formations recorded changes of atmosphere-hydrosphere interactions near sea level in the ancient ocean, which induced the oxidation of dissolved ferrous iron, precipitation of insoluble ferric oxides and silica, and regulation of oxygen in Earth's early atmosphere. Similarities between the Archean Earth and the composition of the present day atmosphere on Mars, together with the pervasive presence of ferric oxides in the Martian regolith suggest that iron formation might also have been deposited on Mars and influenced the oxygen content of the Martian atmosphere. Such a possibility is discussed here with a view to assessing whether the oxygen content of the Martian atmosphere has been regulated by the chemical precipitation of iron formations on Mars.

Recent star formation in the interacting galaxy system NGC 520

New optical spectroscopy, near-infrared spectroscopy, and mid-infrared imaging of the interacting system NGC 520 are presented. The data show that the heavily obscured primary nucleus has a current star-forming rate about 35 times the typical rate for a late-type galaxy nucleus, which may account for most of the large far-infrared luminosity of NGC 520. The secondary nucleus has little current star formation but has recently undergone a mild starburst. Optical colors and absorption line equivalent widths suggest that the extranuclear regions in both galaxies have experienced enhanced star formation roughly at the same time as the secondary nucleus, though at a lesser intensity. The extent of the extranuclear burst is large; at least half of the projected surface area of the two disks took part to varying degrees in the episode. Determining the exact age and strength of the recent star-formation episode in NGC 520 is uncertain. The best estimate for the initiation time of about few x 10 exp 8 yrs ago is consistent with the system-wide starburst being caused by the galaxy collision.

The formation of primordial binaries in globular clusters by star-disk interactions

The formation of primordial binaries in globular clusters is examined using simple numerical models. Clusters of protostars collapse until their velocity dispersion rises sufficiently to reverse the infall and the cluster reaches equilibrium. During the collapse, interactions between stars and protostellar disks lead to stellar capture. It is found that binary fraction of a few percent typically result. Binary formation is terminated when the velocity dispersion rises to a point at which most encounters result in disk destruction rather than capture. As a result, much gas is returned to the cluster ISM, limiting the star formation efficiency to a value significantly below 100 percent.

An initial study of void formation during solidification of aluminum in normal and reduced-gravity

Void formation due to volumetric shrinkage during aluminum solidification was observed in real time using a radiographic viewing system in normal and reduced gravity. An end chill directional solidification furnace with water quench was developed to solidify aluminum samples during the approximately 16 seconds of reduced gravity (+/- 0.02g) achieved by flying an aircraft through a parabolic trajectory. Void formation was recorded for two cases: first a nonwetting system; and second, a wetting system where wetting occurs between the aluminum and crucible lid. The void formation in the nonwetting case is similar in normal and reduced gravity, with a single vapor cavity forming at the top of the crucible. In the wetting case in reduced gravity, surface tension causes two voids to form in the top corners of the crucible, but in normal gravity only one large voids forms across the top.

The star formation history of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Deep photometric observations of stars in three fields of the LMC are presented, and these data are interpreted using synthetic CMDs and LFs generated from overshoot models. The field CMDs and LFs with a star formation rate that experienced a large increase (4 +/- 0.5) x 10 exp 9 yr ago is successfully modeled. The precise age of this 'burst' depends sensitively on the characteristics of the models. Classical (i.e., nonovershoot) models yield a burst age about 2 x 10 exp 9 yr younger than the value obtained. An initial mass function with slope of 2.35 (the Salpeter value) and a mean field star metallicity of Fe/H of about -0.7 are consistent with the photometric data and LFs. It is suggested that the star formation rate in the LMC was globally quite low during at least the first half of its lifetime, and that a major event triggered a substantial and relatively sudden increase in the star formation rate throughout the entire LMC which persisted for several 10 exp 9 yr and even up to the present epoch in some parts of that galaxy.

Odd oxygen formation in the laser irradiation of O2 at 248 nm - Evidence for reactions of O2 in the Herzberg states with ground state O2

Two O3 formation processes (initiation and autocatalytic) are studied in pure O2 and in O2+N2 and O2+Ar mixtures at pressures between 200 and 1600 torr and at temperatures between 298 and 370 K. Evidence is presented that the initiation process produces O3 through chemical reactions between ground state O2 and excited O2 in the Herzberg states, which are produced by the photoabsorption of O2 at 248 nm. For the autocatalytic process, the results are consistent with the proposal that the O3 formation is accelerated by photodissociating vibrationally excited O2(nu), produced in the photolysis of O3 following its initial formation. It is argued that the O2 Herzberg states and O2(nu) may play important roles in the odd oxygen chemistry in the middle atmosphere. It is estimated that the O2(A3Sigma-u(+))+O2 reaction may yield up to about 6 percent of the total odd oxygen production rate near 50 km.

Three-dimensional laser window formation for industrial application

The NASA Lewis Research Center has developed and implemented a unique process for forming flawless three-dimensional, compound-curvature laser windows to extreme accuracies. These windows represent an integral component of specialized nonintrusive laser data acquisition systems that are used in a variety of compressor and turbine research testing facilities. These windows are molded to the flow surface profile of turbine and compressor casings and are required to withstand extremely high pressures and temperatures. This method of glass formation could also be used to form compound-curvature mirrors that would require little polishing and for a variety of industrial applications, including research view ports for testing devices and view ports for factory machines with compound-curvature casings. Currently, sodium-alumino-silicate glass is recommended for three-dimensional laser windows because of its high strength due to chemical strengthening and its optical clarity. This paper discusses the main aspects of three-dimensional laser window formation. It focuses on the unique methodology and the peculiarities that are associated with the formation of these windows.

Jet induced star formation in centrally dominant galaxies?

Using U-I CCD color maps of two centrally dominant cluster galaxies, we find unusual color structures which may be due to star formation which has been induced by their radio sources. These objects, located in the clusters A1795 and A2597, have blue central colors to radii of 20 kpc, spatially extended emission-line structures, and powerful radio sources. They reside at the centers of cooling flows with mass-accretion rates which are estimated to be approximately greater than 300 solar mass/yr. The regions of bluest local color are superposed on or along their radio-source structures. Our observations suggest that the radio sources associated with these objects may be inducing massive star formation in their central 20 kpc. The star formation may be the result of the radio plasma interacting with the warm emission-line gas and dense, x-ray emitting filaments similar to those recently discovered in two other clusters with the ROSAT Observatory. Since radio jets are likely to be transient, this may help to explain the scatter in the correlations between color and mass-accretion rate, although other factors may also contribute. Alternatively, scattered radiation from a hidden active nucleus or recent mergers may be responsible for the color structure. The color and radio properties of these objects are qualitatively similar but smaller in luminosity and spatial extent to those found in high redshift radio galaxies. Our observations of galaxies at z approximately = 0.06-0.1 show that processes similar to 'the alignment effect' found in high redshift radio galaxies occur at more recent epochs.

Mars brine formation experiment

Evaporites, particularly carbonates, nitrates, and sulfates, may be major sinks of volatiles scavenged from the martian atmosphere. Mars is thought to have once had a denser, warmer atmosphere that permitted the presence of liquid surface water. The conversion of atmospheric CO2 into carbonate is hypothesized to have degraded the martian climate to its present state of a generally subfreezing, desiccated desert. The rate for such a conversion under martian conditions is poorly known, so the time scale of climate degradation by this process cannot be easily evaluated. If some models are correct, carbonate formation may have been fast at geological time scales. The experiments of Booth and Kieffer also imply fast (10(exp 6) - 10(exp 7) yr) removal of the missing CO2 inventory, estimated to be 1 - 5 bar, by means of carbonate formation. The timing of formation of many of the fluvial features observed on Mars is, in large part, dependent on when and how fast the atmosphere changed. A knowledge of the rate at which carbonates and nitrates formed is also essential for assessing the probability that life, or its chemical precursors, could have developed on Mars. No previous experiments have quantitatively evaluated the rate of solution for a suite of mobile anions and cations from unaltered minerals and atmospheric gases into liquid water under Mars-like conditions. Such experiments are the focus of this task.

Mechanisms of voids formation during cooldown and freezing of lithium in SP-100 type systems

The mechanisms of void formation during the cooldown and freezing of lithium coolant within the primary loop of SP-100 type systems are investigated. These mechanisms are: (a) homogeneous nucleation, (b) heterogeneous nucleation, (c) normal segregation of helium gas dissolved in liquid lithium, and (d) shrinkage of lithium during freezing. To evaluate the void formation potential due to segregation, a numerical scheme that couples the freezing and mass diffusion processes in both the solid and liquid regions is developed. The results indicated that the formation of He bubbles is unlikely by either homogeneous or heterogeneous nucleation during the cooldown process. However, homogeneous nucleation of He bubbles following the segregation of dissolved He in liquid Lithium ahead of the solid-liquid interface is likely to occur. Results also show that total volume of He void is insignificant when compared to that of shrinkage voids.

Field of view location and formation flying for polar orbiting missions

The problem of flying an earth observing mission using a group of observatories flying in formation, rather than a single observatory, is addressed. Contraints placed on the design of the observatories and of the mission, if it is required that the instantaneous field of views of the two instruments overlap by a specified amount, are determined. The complexities of formation flying are found to greatly outweigh simpler solutions which combine instruments on a single spacecraft payload. While formation flying may be beneficial when crossing times and simultaneity arguments are not stringent, it is not practical for EOS. Accomplishment of the EOS scientific mission requires the simultaneous measurement of a basic set of earth system science parameters; it also requires that many events be observed by groups of instruments looking through the same atmospheric path.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation in carbon-rich stellar envelopes

A detailed chemical kinetic scheme is applied to stellar envelope profiles of gas density and temperature profiles in order to study the formation of PAH molecules in carbon-rich stellar outflows. Chemical concentration profiles are calculated for several envelope models by integrating the coupled continuity equations that include spherically expanding flows from an inner boundary at the shock formation radius. The influence of the 'inverse greenhouse' effect experienced by small PAHs is investigated and shown to increase the PAH yield by many orders of magnitude. It is shown that the route through propargyl radicals could be an important channel to produce benzene. PAH formation yields are found to be extremely sensitive to gas density and temperature and are much smaller than values inferred from the observed dust content of late-type carbon-rich stellar envelopes. It is therefore unlikely that aromatic molecules are generated in the stellar outflow itself.

Display format and highlight validity effects on search performance using complex visual displays

Display format and highlight validity were shown to affect visual display search performance; however, these studies were conducted on small, artificial displays of alphanumeric stimuli. A study manipulating these variables was conducted using realistic, complex Space Shuttle information displays. A 2x2x3 within-subjects analysis of variance found that search times were faster for items in reformatted displays than for current displays. The significant format by highlight validity interaction showed that there was little difference in response time to both current and reformatted displays when the highlight validity was applied; however, under the non or invalid highlight conditions, search times were faster with reformatted displays. Benefits of highlighting and reformatting displays to enhance search and the necessity to consider highlight validity and format characteristics in tandem for predicting search performance are discussed.

Solar coronal observations and formation of the He II 304 A line

Although a large body of recent work supports the formation of the He II 304 A resonance line by collisional excitation in the quiet sun, the formation mechanism is less clear in strong coronal active regions and flares. The 1989 May 5 flight of the Goddard Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS-3) provided a data set that is well suited to addressing this question. This paper develops a method of assessment of the line formation mechanism that is based on simple non-LTE theory and is applied to these data. The results support the conclusion of other authors that the 304 A line is formed by collisional excitation in the quiet sun, but that photoionization-recombination (p-r) may play a significant role in coronal active regions, and that p-r is important, and may even be predominant, in many flares.
