Failure mode frequency ratios, environmental adjustment factors, and failure rates for mechanical and electromechanical component families are presented. The failure rates and failure rate modifiers resulted from a series of studies whose purpose was to provide design, tests, reliability, and systems engineers with accurate, up-to-date failure rate information. The results of the studies were achieved through an extensive engineering analysis of the Saturn Program test data and Unsatisfactory Condition Reports (UCR's) and the application of mathematical techniques developed for the studies.
Computer systems program specifications are presented for the modular space station information management system. These are the computer program contract end item, data bus system, data bus breadboard, and display interface adapter specifications. The performance, design, tests, and qualification requirements are established for the implementation of the information management system. For Vol. 1, see N72-19972.
The effects of extreme values of surface and low altitude atmospheric parameters on space vehicle design, tests, and operations are discussed. Atmospheric extremes from the surface to 150 meters for geographic locations of interest to NASA are given. Thermal parameters (temperature and solar radiation), humidity, pressure, and atmospheric electricity (lighting and static) are presented. Weather charts and tables are included.
The Apollo 13 anomaly provided considerable impetus for a variety of types of cryogenic and ignition tests. The logic of the various test program designs, the test techniques, and their final impact upon the investigation findings are described. In addition, several test programs initiated to determine the thermal performance and general performance characteristics of the redesigned Apollo 14 cryogenic storage system are presented.
The fabrication techniques of integrated vacuum circuits are described in detail. Data obtained from a specially designed test circuit are presented. The data show that the emission observed in reverse biased devices is due to cross-talk between the devices and can be eliminated by electrostatic shielding. The lifetime of the cathodes has been improved by proper activation techniques. None of the cathodes on life test has shown any sign of failure after more than 3500 hours. Life tests of triodes show a decline of anode current by a factor of two to three after a few days. The current recovers when the large positive anode voltage (100 V) has been removed for a few hours. It is suggested that this is due to trapped charges in the sapphire substrate. Evidence of the presence of such charges is given, and a model of the charge distribution is presented consistent with the measurements. Solution of the problem associated with the decay of triode current may require proper treatment of the sapphire surface and/or changes in the deposition technique of the thin metal films.
Outlined is an information system based on the use of remote sensor data and the design, testing, and implementation of interpretation keys for agriculture. The task of crop identification from radar imagery emphasizes dichotomous keys and the effects of frequency, angular and other microwave dependencies of crops for use in discrimination. A mosaic is formulated from imagery and used to study acres in wheat for spread of circular irrigation, spread of crops, and other phenomena.
The technical requirements and restraints imposed by the ERTS spacecraft upon the Delta launch vehicle, shroud system, associated launch complex, and range are presented for technical coordination among various agencies involved in the launch vehicle and launch operations. The payload and spacecraft systems are described, and the mission, design, test, and launch base data are outlined.
The development of an alumina/silicate based composite material for space shuttle reusable surface insulation is reported. Physical property determinations, environmental testing, design analysis, and projected costs for a thermal protection system are outlined.
The STRAP IV attitude control system was designed, tested, and successfully launched to provide stable high accuracy pointing at nontrackable X-ray sources. On its initial flight (May 19, 1972), the STRAP IV control system updated its high accuracy, rate integrating gyros on two successive stellar targets and then maneuvered the rocket body to point the experimental payload at two separate X-ray sources and an X-ray-free background location. The third axis, which remained under the control of a coarse free gyro, was updated by a technique of successive star-target coordinate transformation to ensure the correct fine-axis azimuth alignment for the high accuracy inertial maneuvers. Pointing accuracies of 4 arc min with limit cycle stability of less than 20 arc sec peak to peak were obtained on all targets.
Instrumentation for actuators and operators includes electrical position-indicating switches, potentiometers, and transducers and pressure-indicating switches and transducers. Monograph is based on critical evaluation of experiences and practices in design, test, and use of these control devices and instruments in operational space vehicles.
A directory is presented to make available to the aerospace safety community a handbook of organizations and experts in specific, well-defined areas of safety technology. It is designed for the safety specialist as an aid for locating both information sources and individual points of contact (experts) in engineering related fields. The file covers sources of data in aerospace design, tests, as well as information in hazard and failure cause identification, accident analysis, materials characteristics, and other related subject areas. These 171 organizations and their staff members, hopefully, should provide technical information in the form of documentation, data and consulting expertise. These will be sources that have assembled and collated their information, so that it will be useful in the solution of engineering problems. One of the goals of the project in the United States that have and are willing to share data of value to the aerospace safety community.
